The Digest – Gameweek 21

We glance back at Gameweek 21’s events this Thursday lunchtime, as West Ham’s fit-again playmaker returns to Fantasy managers’ radars. Elsewhere, Man United’s upturn in attacking output and the upcoming armband alternatives to Sergio Aguero are also on our menu.

The Player

A goal and assist in West Ham’s comeback win at Bournemouth signalled Dimitri Payet’s return to Fantasy form on Tuesday evening.

Afforded a couple of sub appearances in league and cup over the Hammers’ previous fixtures, the Frenchman was re-installed to the starting XI for the first time since sustaining an ankle injury back in Gameweek 12.

With Payet pulling the strings, Bilic’s men extended their unbeaten run to eight league outings after a run of gritty displays without their talismanic playmaker. Fantasy managers have been quick to act – drafted in by over 140,000 last week, he’s been snapped up by a massive 105,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers as a result of his midweek endeavours.

Whilst the 11-point haul underlined his explosive potential, Payet’s consistency is key here – he’s picked up points in nine of 13 league appearances since arriving over the summer.

Impressively, the Frenchman’s Dean Court haul took his average to 6.1 points per game in 2015/16 – only Riyad Mahrez and Mesut Ozil have managed more. Whilst both Mahrez and Ozil are owned by 66% and 55% respectively, Payet currently sits in just 12% of FPL teams ahead of the weekend trip to Newcastle.

One look at the schedule suggests that the bandwagon won’t be slowing anytime soon. Given that the Magpies match is one of five fixtures against the bottom nine (new, MCI, AVL, sou, nor, SUN) in the next six, Bilic, and Fantasy managers alike, will have every reason for optimism as the Hammers look to strengthen their top-six ambitions.

The Team

Whilst a 3-3 draw at Newcastle may have dented their title ambitions, it did, at least, continue Man United’s recent return to attacking form.

Louis van Gaal’s side have now scored five times in the last two Gameweeks – although that’s not overly prolific, put into perspective, they had found the net just seven times in the 10 league matches beforehand. Furthermore, the Red Devils sit top for shots inside the box (24) and second only to Arsenal for big chances (five to six) in the last two matches, with Wayne Rooney the chief beneficiary in their turnaround, having produced three goals and an assist over that period. It’s been a long time coming but Van Gaal’s captain is finally starting to suggest he could, once again, be a viable contender for our three-man frontlines.

Jesse Lingard’s strike at St James’ also strengthened his chances of further pitch time. A peripheral figure mainly due to injuries this year, he’s now notched in two of his last five starts and, at just 4.2, could be another to monitor in the budget midfield bracket.

The upturn in the final third has come at a time where United were in danger of falling off our radars altogether. After a resilient start to the season, they’ve managed just two shut-outs in the last nine Gameweeks, with the appeal of backline regulars David de Gea and Chris Smalling very much on the wane.

Sitting two points off fourth spot, the Red Devils’ problems at the back may well continue to see them go on the offensive. Upcoming clashes against Liverpool, Southampton, Stoke and Chelsea aren’t the easiest but if the under-fire Dutchman is to keep his side in the Champions League race, attack may well be his best form of defence from this point onwards.

The Talking Point

After following up his Gameweek 20 winner at Watford with a goal and two assists in cup clashes against Everton and Norwich, the race was on for Sergio Aguero’s signature as City welcomed the Toffees to the Etihad last night.

The Argentine had looked back to his best after yet another stint on the sidelines and over 120,000 FPL managers snapped him up in expectation against an Everton defence with two clean sheets in 14 prior to last night’s goalless draw.

Although Aguero’s blank proved frustrating, the impact was felt less due to the failure of a number of contenders, with the likes of Harry Kane, Mesut Ozil, Riyad Mahrez and Kevin De Bruyne all unable to take advantage.

Nonetheless, for all his explosive potential (as clearly evidenced by a five-goal haul at home to Newcastle), there’s no doubt that Aguero has been far less consistent this season. He’s scored in just four of his 13 league appearances and produced only one assist, whilst, on the road, that strike at Vicarage Road was his first attacking returns in seven away appearances in 2015/16.

Up next, Aguero now hosts Palace before travelling to West Ham and Sunderland – fixtures in which his owners will surely back him with the armband.

With Kane at home to Sunderland this weekend, though, and Lukaku then hosting Swansea and Newcastle over Gameweeks 23-24, those who are prepared to go without the Argentine in order to strengthen elsewhere certainly have very viable captaincy alternatives who may well be set to capitalise should he blank once again.

After Tot vs Sun is it good move to do :

Kane + Alli--> Ighalo + Payet for free?

Only other option for Payet is Mahrez out but I dunno if I shud take out such a value player....

Payet is like a cheaper KDB with more scoring potential and he turns up for away games.

I think that's two good players out for two good players. However, things change every gameweek so my advice would be to look at the options again after the weekend.

Ighalo's fixtures are indeed bad, but the guy is a beast so not too worried about that (I own him myself).

Fair amount of goals scored, just not template or lauded FFS players. A decent captain score would make a lot of difference as well, although Rooney would be a punt too far for me.

Said it for a while now. KDB struggles to perform in big games. City purchased him to perform in the big matches, not against the likes of Sunderland.

Is KDB good for City? they certainly have dropped in level since he joined.

Ah, I thought you meant he was overpriced for his returns, my bad 🙂

Sanchez has a ton of shots, but he's inconsistent in his finishing.
KdB gets involved in his team's attack just as much overall, both great players but KdB is more predictable imo.

I don't agree with you...Sanchez is a world class player....his finishing is top notch....10-15 games is a very small sample size for finishing skill...refer to last season and his Barca days....KDB on the other hand has really had only one good season in his entire career

KdB has had 2 good seasons in his career and is a lot younger than Sanchez.

I don't think it's a fair reflection to compare KdB being the centralised creative focal point of a Wolfsburg team and Sanchez being a poacher for one of the most creative and talented Barca sides of all time.

Sanchez IS a top notch player, and he's a great finisher on his day, but his days are few and far between for Arsenal, at least in front of goal.

I do actually, but in a completely different way.
If you gave me the choice between Payet or Alexis Sanchez, judging by the last 12 months, I'd lean towards Payet.

Sanchez has a much better work rate, better pace, better power, and is one of the most technically gifted players in the league, but Payet is better in terms of technical ability. That doesn't mean Payet will score more goals, I don't think that at all, but he's more important to his team.

I'm not sure what you mean by "Payet was better at Marseille" as that was in the French league, which is worse than the German and English leagues.

With regards to the youth comment, I simply meant that it's unfair to say that KdB has "only" had 2 good seasons when he's only after turning 24 and was frozen out of Chelsea by Mourinho.

All I'm saying Eden is that the points you make about KdB can also be made about Sanchez.

That's exactly what I meant to say.

Sanchez is one of the most technically gifted players.
Payet is also one of the most technically gifted players.
I think Payet just about edges it over Sanchez (and KdB) in terms of technical ability, and he has arguably been in the best form out of all 3 players for the last 12 months.

There was a guy playing his wc this week and I recommended he ditch kdb and upgrade bojan to costa or rooney. I also recommended he ditch Ozil for Oscar/Payet as the guy was in 2.2m overall or something. I just checked his wc team and he held on to KDB even though he brought in Kun.

Some people just don't get the idea of looking for future points instead of looking back at past points and expecting the same. KDB has been incredibly fortunate with a lot of his returns so far but some people can't see this. It was the same with ADM last season (maybe it something to do with the 3 letter abbreviation?)

Don't do Sterling. I fell into that trap and there is nothing more frustrating than your player coming off before 60mins. I suffered too many on returns hoping for a big haul.

If you want a city mid I'd go Silva. He may not be ready for 2 games in 4 days yet but he will be soon imo.

        Need more opinions.

Who to bench out of Mahrez, Payet, Ozil, Alli, KDB?

        Looking towards Ozil or Alli.

Ozil is risky, against an OK Stoke which has recently been more offensive-minded, yet they're still Stoke & they're home.

Alli is safer, less explosive, at home, against a struggling Sunderland side albeit a whooping against Swansea.

At the start, but really isn't doing much now

Who could you get for 6.4 to give the potential?

Still good fixtures and still great for value if you got him at the start

True but he's not even shooting at the moment

        Butland
        Dann Wolls Moreno Toby Cresswell
        Payet Ozil Mahrez KDB Stanislas
        Giroud Lukaku Aguero

I know I shouldn't be thinking about WC given my rank and team but I can't help but feel I want to mix it up a bit. I'm not going to use it mind but it's tempting.

1FT and £0.9m ITB, shift Dann for?

West Ham seem to be in good form
          Leicester have a better fixture

How many of you are looking at your strong front 8 all with plum fixtures for next GW and wishing you hadn’t burned your AOA chip in the early GWs of the season?

I still have my AOA chip....saving it for GW 38 for the fun 😛

(I am benching Walcott this week)

What is the most basic way of playing fpl but doing half decent I get carried away only 1 that use FFS in my MLS the others know nothing about football and still do well.

Pick popular players then do auto fills.

So this is my 8th year playing FPL, I have never finished lower than 100k, this year I am languishing in 1m.

I haven't done anything differently, pick players based on form and fixtures. Just not working for me this season. Can't seem to get my captain right either.

Anyone else experiencing this? Is this an abnormal FPL season?

Experiencing the same, although only my second, finished top 5k by luck with my first year of FPL & only second year of getting into Football.

My team seems ridiculous but I'm racking up low ass points. The perfect template seems to be drastically different with each game week
