Blank and Double Gameweek Planning

With the possibility of a Double Gameweek in Gameweek 25 out of the question, we can now turn our attention to the upcoming blanks in Gameweek 27 and, more importantly, Gameweek 30. I’m sure you can figure out how to prepare for the Gameweek 27 blanks, as just four teams, Everton, Liverpool, Newcastle and Manchester City miss out.

But preparing for the Gameweek 30 blanks will be a lot more complicated.

In this article I will outline the permutations, probabilities and strategy associated with the Gameweek 30 blanks. It may seem like a long way off but trust me, one misspent transfer between now and then could directly lead to you having to take an extra four-point hit in order to have a full XI in Gameweek 30.

THE PERMUTATIONS AND PROBABILITIES

Fa Cup 5th Round Draw
(Premier League teams in bold)

Shrewsbury vs Man United

Chelsea vs Man City

Reading vs West Brom or Peterborough

Watford vs Leeds

Blackburn vs Liverpool or West Ham

Spurs vs Crystal Palace

Arsenal vs Hull

Bournemouth vs Everton

Gameweek 30 Fixtures and Blank Permutations

Arsenal vs West Brom – Blank if ARS beat HUL or if WBA beat PET and REA.

Man Utd vs Crystal Palace – Blank if MUN beat SHR or if CRY beat TOT.

West Ham vs Watford – Blank if WHU beat LIV and BLA or if WAT beat LEE.

Aston Villa vs Spurs – Blank if TOT beat CRY.

Liverpool vs Chelsea – Blank if LIV beat WHU and BLA or if CHE beat MCI.

Sunderland vs Everton – Blank if EVE beat BOU.

Norwich vs Man City – Blank if MCI beat CHE.

Bournemouth vs Swansea – Blank if BOU beat EVE.

Leicester vs Newcastle – Can’t be a blank.

Stoke vs Southampton – Can’t be a blank.

Blank Probabilities

Bet Victor are offering odds for teams to reach the FA Cup Quarter Finals, using those odds I have worked out the percentage chance of each Gameweek 30 fixture being a blank. I won’t bore you with the maths in this article, if you’d like to see the odds, click on the link to my spreadsheet at the bottom of the page.

Arsenal vs West Brom – 91.78%

Man Utd vs Crystal Palace – 91.69%

West Ham vs Watford – 83.93%

Aston Villa vs Spurs – 70.91%

Liverpool vs Chelsea – 68.75%

Sunderland vs Everton – 58.88%

Norwich vs Man City – 50%

Bournemouth vs Swansea – 41.12%

Leicester vs Newcastle – Can’t be a blank.

Stoke vs Southampton – Can’t be a blank.

ANALYSIS

Four teams definitely won’t have a blank in Gameweek 30:
Leicester, Newcastle, Southampton and Stoke.

Either Swansea & Bournemouth or Everton & Sunderland will have blanks in Gameweek 30.

Four teams have at least a 90% chance of a blank in Gameweek 30 (according to Bet Victor):
West Brom, Arsenal, Crystal Palace and Man United.

If West Ham beat Liverpool in their FA Cup replay on Tuesday 9th February:
Either Liverpool & Chelsea or Man City & Norwich will have blanks in Gameweek 30.

STRATEGY

To maximise your free transfers between now and Gameweek 30 so you can get as close to a full XI in Gameweek 30 as possible, without taking hits you should follow these rules (split into two sections: before and after the final game of FA Cup 5th Round weekend on February 21st)

Before February 21st:

  • Spend the fewest possible FTs (either 0,1 or 2 depending on how many FTs you have right now).
  • Only buy LeicesterNewcastleSouthampton and Stoke players.
  • Only sell West BromArsenalCrystal Palace and Man United players (if West Ham beat Liverpool in their FA Cup replay, you could sell a West Ham or Watford player too).

After February 21st:

  • Only buy players who won’t have a blank in Gameweek 30.
  • Only sell players who will have a blank in Gameweek 30 (or players who will miss Gameweek 30 due to injury).

MINIMUM ACTIVE GAMEWEEK 30 PLAYERS

If you’d like to know the minimum number of active players you can get in Gameweek 30 without hits, follow these steps (it might seem obscure, but it works):

  1. 5 + the number of FTs you have right now.
  2. Add your total number of LeicesterNewcastle, Southampton and Stoke players.
  3. Add whichever number is smaller:
    a) Your total number of Everton & Sunderland players.
    or
    b) Your total number of Swansea & Bournemouth players.
  4. If Liverpool lose to West Ham in their FA Cup replay next Wednesday, add whichever number is smaller:
    a) Your total number of Liverpool & Chelsea players.
    or
    b) Your total number of Man City & Norwich players.
  5. Subtract 1 if you’re reading this after the Gameweek 25 deadline.
  6. Subtract 2 if you’re reading this after the Gameweek 26 deadline, etc.

Schedule

Q & As

Q. When will the Double Gameweeks be?
A. Most, if not all of the blanks from Gamweek 30 will be rescheduled to Gameweek 34, which will be the biggest Double Gameweek of the season. There will be another set of blanks due to clashes with the FA Cup Semi Finals in Gameweek 35 and the subsequent Double Gameweek will be in Gameweek 37. There will probably be at least one more mini-Double Gameweek after Gameweek 30 but it’s harder to predict when that might be. Check the Schedule section of my spreadsheet for more detail.

Q. How many Double Gameweek players can you get in Gameweek 34 if you have a full XI in Gameweek 30?
A. At least eight without hits. Between Gameweek 30 and Gameweek 34 you should transfer in some players who have a Double Gameweek in Gameweek 34 and don’t have a blank in Gameweek 35.

Q. When should I use my Wildcard, Triple Captain and Bench Boost chips?
A. I think the best time to use the second Wildcard is in Gameweek 36, then Bench Boost with 15 Double Gameweek players in Gameweek 37. I’ll use my Triple Captain chip in one of the other Double Gameweeks.

    Fantastic research!

    Current team:
    Butland, Hennesy
    Sagna, Beller, Simpson, Dawson, Alderw
    Oz, Ali, Mahrz, Payet, Firmi
    Kun, Kane, Iggy

    Thinking of:
    Dawson -> Fonte/VVD (this week)
    Firmino -> Arnie (next week)

    Any thoughts lads?

Dawson -> Fonte/VVD is a great move this week. There's no point making any solid plans for next week because the FA Cup 5th round will be before the GW 27 deadline.

Problem with that is Toby loves corner goals and Huth just scored 2. City defence is pants.

This is really good stuff. I could add, that we know we have at least 3 games, but if West Ham win tomorrow, we can add a 4th guaranteed game (one of the Che and MCI games)

My personal view is that there'll be points to gain in GW30 but this will fill the team with second string players. As a consequence, GW31 WC may be the way to go.

I 100% agree. That's my plan at least.
This blank could be as valuable as a DGW

"If West Ham beat Liverpool in their FA Cup replay on Tuesday 9th February:

On your 2nd point, if Chelsea knock City out of the cup, my GW 30 team will be pretty strong.

I think you meant either teams will play rather than have blanks. The Chelsea-win scenario will help most teams. Liverpool-Chelsea playing is more awkward and will help the dead teams - which will infuriate most on this site.

either team will have a blank means the other will have a game. If Liverpool win tomorrow night, Chelsea vs Liverpool will probably be a blank regardless of what happens in the Man City vs Chelsea FA Cup tie

How are the rules on Premier League matches on days with European football? I see that other European leagues (La Liga, etc.) have matches next week for instance. Can postponed matches be played in GW 32 for instance?

Barcelona have a league Match Wednesday next week, but it kicks off at 5:30pm UK time, so doesn't clash with the CL. Theoretically, PL matches could be played on a CL Tuesday/Wednesday, but would have to kick-off at 5:30pm - has never happened before. Imagine there would be policing issues, and the fans would probably not like it either.

Good point. But Scottish Prem next week at 19:45. It could be more of a squeeze this year than before if some of the teams with blank GW 27 go far in the FA cup.

I believe it is only the top European Leagues not allowed to play on CL matches due to worldwide TV coverage (written into the media rights), so guessing the SPL is not one of these.

The fixture list being tight is the FA's fault for poor planning this season - sh*t is going to hit the fan if there are lots of 5th/6th round replays

Yeah, I spotted that, that's why I added the teams playing in Europe each midweek to my spreadsheet. Spurs or Liverpool could maybe play an FA Cup replay on Monday March 7th if the first round of their Europa League L16 tie is at home. Not sure when Chelsea would play a replay though.

Move them to later in the season?! That would mean 2, 4 or 6 blanks in GW 28 and more DGWs later in the season, increasing the chance of a random DGW or even a Triple Gameweek.

GWs 27-37 could be the hardest to navigate run of fixtures in the history of FPL...

Bookmarked!! Excellent stuff Perchinho and lots of food for thought.... Timing of use of the 2nd WC will be key here, surely to maximise the potential of GW34 you need to use the WC in GW31/32/33?

It all depends on the outcome of the Chelsea vs Man City FA Cup tie, if Man City lose (without a replay) it could be possible to get 11 players without blanks in GW 30 and 10 players with a DGW in GW 34 without hits, if that happens I'll save my WC for GW 36.

Great Stuff Perchinho, I've been thinking about ur tactics and I've got 2FTs
and im unsure how to play it this week, can you help?

    Cech, Hennesey,
    Kolarov, Dann, Koscienly, Dawson, Alder,
    Mahrez, Ozil, Ali, Drinkwater, Willian,
    Kane, Aguero, Vardy,
    £0.5 bank

I was thinking maybe Dawson out for VDD
And stay on 2FTs for next week and Gw30 planning??

Dawson -> VVD is a great move this week.

If Cech and Henn both have a blank in GW 30, I'd sell Henn, his DGW in GW 34 would be Man U away and Arsenal away!

I'm trying to work out what GW 30 team I could get without taking a hit, assuming all the favourites win in the FA Cup 5th round, and Chelsea beat Man City (which is 50/50 according to the bookies), my team would look something like this:

    Forster* (sto)
VVD* (sto), Kompany (nor), Otamendi (nor), Fuchs* (NEW), Wollscheid* (SOT)
Mahrez* (NEW), Ayew (bou), Sigurdsson (bou)
    Vardy (NEW), Aguero* (nor)

    Hennessey*; Ozil*, Alli*, Kane*

with about £3.2 in the bank.

Players with a * next to them are players I've already got.

Swansea have great fixtures, they play Norwich and Villa at home either side of GW 30.

Man City have decent fixtures and should should be defensively solid when Kompany comes back, he's played the full 90 minutes 8 times this season and conceded just 1 goal (and scored 2!).

Leicester have the best fixtures in the league by a mile between GW 27 and GW 35, Southampton have the 2nd easiest during that period according to the ticker.

If Man City get their DGW in GW 34 I could get 10 DGWers in GW 34 without hits.

So I've come to the conclusion that it'd definitely be better to save the 2nd WC for GW 36 if Man City lose to Chelsea in the FA Cup.

i think liverpool could also spoil the chelsea fixture imo. tough game tomorrow but would not be surprised if they went through.

best bet for you (and many others im sure) on keeping a respectable team would be hoping for a spurs or arsenal defeat i think. arsenal looks highly unlikely though.

i wouldnt load on too many city defence either as i think their attack is where the points lie. KDB shgould be back before GW34 assuming he makes a timely recovery, he's seldom injured so i think its possible.

I don't have any Chelsea/Liverpool players in that team.

My best bet for a respectable team is Man City losing to Chelsea, I think the team above is very respectable.

I'd be more confident about doubling up on Man City's defence in GW 30 than their attack if Kompany's back.

sorry i was assuming you were going to buy otamendi and kompany still in the next few games. i think the best case is teams who you own the most number of players right now, should be the ones you want through. so if you have 3 city then 100% think you're sorted, even with 2 in DEF. if you only have 1 city player now it would still mean having to buy another 2 out of the few FTs left. the advantage comes in having fewer transfers to make imo.

You assumed correctly, I only have Aguero from City. I can get XI players in GW 30 if Man City don't have a blank. I have 3 Spurs so it'd help if they lost, but Man City losing to Chelsea is more likely.

One of the best posts, nice one mate.

I am really hoping Palace beat Spurs in the cup, it would mean i can likely field 11 without ripping my team apart. (have kane, alli, 3x leicester, butland wollscheid currently). 4 more transfers and i could field a team without overloading on dross. big IF with the spurs game though.

Arsenal would help many managers too but i cant see them losing to hull.

Arsenal could lose to Hull and still have a blank if WBA beat Peterboro and Reading.

I honestly don't think you'll need to overload on dross, look at my team above, Man City vs Chelsea is the key game IMO. 3 x Man City will be almost obligatory if they get knocked out.

newcastle and stoke have decent fixtures for gw31 and 32 so i wouldnt mind playing them in those until the 33 wildcard, but wouldnt go as far as to load too many (maybe just wijnaldum, janmaat, and double stoke defence or something).

yeah city's fixtures are great around that period, i would definitely get 3 of them either way, if they got knocked out the cup. i would personally prefer spurs not having a blank as i can accomodate it more easily, i only have aguero atm from city.

    Great Article!

I guess one other thing to bear in mind, is if there is a big DGW in 34 and another in 37 (and another mini DGW somewhere else). Which of the 2 big DGWs have better overall fixtures for the players we would want. I agree with GW36 possibly being the key, but if for example the top teams (+team we will most likely have) in DGW34 have 2 easy home games, but in DGW37 the top teams (+teams we will have) play each other or have more difficult away fixtures...it could alter the appeal of maximising fielded players over either of the GWs.

Depends on how the fixtures turn out, but will almost certainly be 31 or 36, if it's a reasonably close call, I think 31 is the way I'll go - 36 may be mathematically better for maximising player numbers, but my gut feel is 31 will just be more fun.

Either way though, I think there will be a massive advantage over those not having a strategy for the DGWs (which will be in the millions), and this article is brilliant for the preparation - a great job 🙂

Yeah, I'll WC in either 31 or 36 too, it'll be a heck of a lot easier to make that decision after the FA Cup QFs in GW 30.

So then I can build a full team specifically for up to GW30 and not worry about the mess I'm left with for GW31 and GW32. Will have 3 FTs before GW34 to sort out any problems with my DGW team from my WC team. As I say though, who is playing in GW30 and who is playing in DGW35 will be the deciding factor - if there are good teams in GW30, I might as well just hold off until GW36.

Good point! Liverpool, Man U and Chelsea would have pretty tasty DGWs in GW 37:

      Liverpool: WAT & NEW
      Chelsea: bou & sun
      Man U: nor & whm

But they might not be playing for anything important in the league by then and could rotate players.

Arsenal, Spurs and Man City wouldn't have terrible DGWs, one easy fixture and one tough fixture.

Thanks, its good to see theyre are some good fixtures in gw37, i guess once we know more after the cups we will know for sure the likely double gw fixtures. Also the rotation at end of season or for cups will indeed affect the bedt week to pick a wildcard in. Last thing you want is to have a maxed team and half not play! :-0

Do you have a list/ticker of the likely fixture in gw 34 and gw 37?

With all these transfers needed for GW30 isn't anybody worried about how much value you will be loosing, approaching important DGWs?? Arsenal players and Mahrez etc hold a lot of value for my team in particular.

No way I'm selling Mahrez, I'll keep 3 Leicester players in my team until at least GW 35. I have a lot of value locked up in Ozil so I'd keep him if he gets a blank, I'd probably have to sell Bellerin and Sanchez tho.

Looking towards GW27, only regretting selling Mahrez from the value POV, if I bring him back.

Speaking strictly about points, Alli has outscored Mahrez (by 1) since I swapped the two.

I know some hate non football posts but it is the dead zone. I went into m and s to do some food shopping for the first time zone moving back to Europe 26 months ago, my good it was heaven, expensive mind. What I couldn't believe was that they'd tagged a joint of beef I bought like they used to tag things at hmv. Do people really steal enough of that type of food for that to be needed? And from shops like that? Surprised me a bit.

it's probably worth to keep in mind that the likelihood of all the games in question becoming a blank is just about 4% (going with those odds), in the most likely scenario we'll get 5-6 blanks

Yep, 7 is the max - we'd only get 7 if Liverpool beat West Ham and Blackburn, Man City beat Chelsea, and Man U, Spurs, Man City, Liverpool, Watford and Arsenal or WBA all get to the FA Cup QFs (Spurs, Chelsea and Liverpool would probably get a blank if their FA Cup 5th round tie goes to a replay)

Cheers, it's more complicated than I thought, and I missed the part that blanks in the Swansea - Bournemouth and Everton - Sunderland games are mutually exclusive. I guess 4-5 blanks are most likely to happen then.

These are just estimates but I reckon:

          7: 11%
          6: 30%
          5: 42%
          4: 16%
          3: 1%

Hey Perchinho, great stuff and thanks for putting the effort into this matter.

Would you change anything in this team? I have 1 FT and 0,8 in bank.

    Butland Henny
    Bellerin Sagna Dier Wolls Targett
    Sanchez Mahrez Alli Payet Firmino
    Lukaku Kane Aguero

Should i wait for next week with 2 transfers and get Sagna/Firmino out? And to whom?

Yeah, save your FT. Next week you should get rid of your weakest MCI/LIV/EVE player who'll definitely have a GW 30 blank and transfer in the best player you can afford who won't have a GW 30 blank.

Firstly, hats off to Perchinho for a really detailed but digestible piece of analysis.

My only question is, how can you be so sure game week 34 will have double game weeks...has the FA released something, are you going on past seasons scheduling or your opinion on the most logical slot?

I only ask as I was recently burned by packing out on Liverpool and Man City in hope of a double game week predicted for 25 which never happened.

Regardless of the answer, I am chasing in my mini-league, 51 pts. from 1st, and this double game week plan is my rabbit in the hat as 1st place has used their 2nd wildcard and does no research.

34 and 37 are the only weeks with space as UEFA won't allow the PL to clash with any European games and FA Cup replays are already earmarked for the remaining weeks.
Also, historically 34 and 37 have been used as DGW's. It's just an educated guess though.

I'll write something after the draw for the FA Cup Quarter Finals, after that we'll know most of the teams that'll definitely have a blank in GW 30 and I'll be able to work out the permutations and percentage chance for each GW 35 fixture being a blank.

    Hi Perch,

Thanks for the detailed analysis ! That was indeed very insightful.

I need your advice as to how I should prepare my team for GW30 blanks and DGWs. I am 75 points behind my league leader and we have a $200 bet as to whoever wins the league gets the pot.

I do have bench boost, triple capt and WC available.

Could you please advice as to how I should go about prepping my team for GW30 and onwards.

    This is my current team:

    Cech, Henn
    Bellerin, Kolarov, Ward, Targett, Alderweireld
    Mahrez, Ozil, Payet, Ayew, Alli
    Ighalo, Kane, Aguero

I have to cover 75 points and I think these gameweeks will be the most crucial time for me.

Also, I also wanted to know as to why you think so highly of VVD when Southhampton have pretty much drawn/lost most of their away matches. Stoke vs Southampton on GW30 is obviously going to be a match where Stoke would be the preferred winner or a draw.

    Thanks in advance !

Southampton have the best defense in the league, they have decent fixtures coming up and they won't have any blanks this season.

You should save your FT this week, then just use your all FTs before GW 30 on selling players with a blank and buying players without a blank. I'll probably post another article before GW 31.

But I still don't buy the Southampton defenders theory, Stoke have been extraordinary at their home and considering the fact that they have 2 home games (GW 27 - Aston Villa and GW 28 = Newcastle) against struggling sides, I would totally go for Stoke defenders over Southamptons. Just wanted to know as to why you would go all out Southampton defenders in the first place, when stoke has clearly the fixture advantage

The Stoke defense is terrible without Shawcross, and even with him they haven't been great recently. Southampton's defense has been AMAZING since Forster returned from injury.
