FA Cup Scout Notes – Fifth Round – Sunday

Dimitri Payet and Emmanuel Emenike both score twice as West Ham ease past Blackburn. Eden Hazard provides a goal and two assists as Chelsea crush an under-strength Man City, whilst Martin Kelly fires Palace into the last eight at Tottenham’s expense.

Payet at the double

Dimitri Payet scored two spectacular goals and grabbed an assist as West Ham United dished out a 5-1 thrashing to Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park. Allied with his 13-point haul last Gameweek, the 8.2-priced midfielder is in fine form ahead of a favourable home clash against Sunderland. That being said, Watford’s triumph over Leeds on Saturday already ensured that the Hornets’ visit to the Boleyn Ground in Gameweek 30 will be postponed, diminishing Payet’s appeal on the Fantasy market – nonetheless, more than 69,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have snapped up the Frenchman ahead of the Black Cats showdown.

Emmanuel Emenike also bagged a brace in his maiden start for the Hammers – given that Enner Valencia (ankle) and Andy Carroll (hip) are nursing knocks, the Nigerian marksman, who is priced at 5.0 in FPL, is likely to lead the line against the Black Cats.

In the wake of an impactful cameo against Norwich City last time out, Victor Moses opened the scoring with a drilled strike. If the fit-again Manuel Lanzini – who was deployed in the 67th minute and went on to card an assist – is handed a starting role next time out, Moses and Michail Antonio look set to compete for a wide berth in Slaven Bilic’s preferred 4-2-3-1 set-up. Antonio filled in at right-back against Blackburn as Joey O’Brien and James Tomkins are injured and Sam Byram is cup-tied, having previously played for Leeds in an earlier round.

Cheikhou Kouyate received his marching orders for denying a goal scoring opportunity, ruling him out of the Sunderland encounter. However, Bilic confirmed post-match that he intends to appeal the decision and believes the Irons can present a strong case.

Spurs slip to defeat

Tottenham Hotspur succumbed to a 1-0 home loss at the hands of Crystal Palace. Mauricio Pochettino shuffled the starting XI following their draw at Fiorentina earlier in the week, dropping Toby Alderweireld and Christian Eriksen to the bench.

On the injury front, Hugo Lloris remained sidelined with the shoulder complaint he sustained against Manchester City, while Mousa Dembele was withdrawn at the break with a minor groin problem. Spurs’ last two defeats arrived when the ex-Fulham recruit was hamstrung by injury, so investors in their offense will be hopeful of a swift recovery.

As a consequence of Spurs’ exit from the FA Cup, their road tie against Aston Villa in Gameweek 30 will go ahead as planned. Given that Harry Kane (41% ownership), Alderweireld (42%) and Dele Alli (31%) are among the most popular Fantasy recruits, many managers will find it far easier to cobble together a full team in three weeks’ time.

Kelly wins it for Palace

Martin Kelly steered the Eagles into the quarter finals with a thunderous effort. Wilfried Zaha – who notched two assists in his previous four league starts and netted the winner against Stoke in the Fourth Round – underlined his good form with the assist. Valued at 5.3, the fleet-footed winger could well factor into our thinking for future double Gameweeks.

Yannick Bolasie made a second-half cameo, priming him for a return to league action at West Bromwich Albion next weekend. Nonetheless, his differential potential is curtailed by the fact that Palace’s trip to Manchester United in Gameweek 30 is set to be rescheduled in response to their win over Spurs. On that note, the ownerships of Scott Dann (23%), Chris Smalling (25%) and David De Gea (11%) face the prospect of benching considerable funds during the blank.

Hazard steers Blues to victory

Chelsea put Manchester City to the sword in a 5-1 win at Stamford Bridge. Eden Hazard showed shoots of recovery with a goal and pair of assists, while Diego Costa complemented his assist against Paris Saint-Germain with a goal on Sunday afternoon. Willian, Gary Cahill and Bertrand Traore also graced the scoresheet, with Oscar claiming an assist.

Speaking of Oscar, the Brazil international came up short from the penalty spot for the second time this term, perhaps giving Guus Hiddink food for thought with regards to the Chelsea spot-kick pecking order.

Chelsea’s passage through to the last eight of the FA Cup results in the postponement of their road clash against Liverpool in Gameweek 30. From the Blues’ perspective, Willian is the second-most popular midfielder with regards to transfers in (57,000) this week, while Costa (46,000) is the third-most popular forward, which throws up a dilemma for those new owners. Moreover, Cesar Azpilicueta’s 14% ownership might need to do some tinkering ahead of that date.

The postponement of Chelsea’s clash with Liverpool means that the latter – like Everton – play just twice over the next four Gameweeks. Considering that one of those match-ups is a visit from Manchester City, Roberto Firmino’s 17% ownership will likely be exploring other avenues. On the flip side, both Merseyside clubs will now enjoy two double Gameweeks at some point down the line, which encourages us to keep tabs on the likes of Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho following their return from the treatment room.

Pellegrini rings the changes as City tumble out

Manuel Pellegrini made nine alterations for the Sky Blues’ trip to the capital, ensuring that his first team are well rested for the first leg of their Champions League match-up against Dinamo Kiev on Wednesday.

The likes of Sergio Aguero, David Silva, Yaya Toure and Vincent Kompany all played no part as the Chilean handed five debutants a chance to impress at the Bridge.

Ultimately, City’s defeat to Chelsea means that their trip to Norwich City in Gameweek 30 remains intact. This will be music to the ears of Aguero’s 30% ownership and may persuade many to hold now – a win for City yesterday would have handed Aguero two blanks in the next four, bearing in mind he already misses out this upcoming weekend due to City’s Capital One Cup final clash with Liverpool.

Villa and Newcastle at home is about as good a two fixtures as you can get. Not sure whether arnie will do the business or disappoint, but might be worth a punt.

    This week: Sanchez to Payet
Next week: Alli to Ozil (I have Eriksen and Kane)

I'm not feeling too great - full of cold - is this plan a consequence of a fever, or does it make sense?

Not sure I'd get rid of Alli seen as he plays this week and in GW30.. Why get rid?

I'm in a similar situation with Payet though, I want him in my team but can't bring myself to get rid of Sanchez or Ozil.. + it's bringing in a player that blanks in GW30..

            It's either
            A: Bellerin + Ighalo > Huth + Vardy or
            B: Moreno + Kun > Huth + Vardy.

Right guys... Let's get your thoughts on this... This is an initial draft of where I could get (injuries/suspensions permitting) in GW 34, using only FTs:

    De Gea (AVL CPL)
Kompany (che new) - Bellerin (CPL WBA) - Fuchs (WHM)
Sanchez (CPL WBA) - Ozil (CPL WBA) - Willian (MCI liv) - Payet (lei whm) - Khazri (SOT sun)
Aguero (che new) - Sturridge (bou CHE)

Forster (eve) - Vardy (WHM) - Targett (eve) - Daniels (LIV)

I could potentially take a hit or two to get another couple of DGWers in, but I don't particularly fancy any of the defensive options that I could afford (I'd be shopping in the budget category)... Maybe Foster in nets.

Would you Bench Boost this line-up, or just take it as it is, hoping to use the BB in GW36??

    Really appreciate your thoughts guys...

Concentrate on the next four GW's, with the aim of playing a strong 11 in GW30, with four player on the bench who are likely to have a DGW in GW34.

I can put out a strong GW30 right now, but fair enough on the overreaching with my plan mate.

I kind of wanted to sense-check if my "luxury" transfer, in reply to Jonty's Hot Topic earlier was folly (as I'd run out of FTs). but I think I'm gonna go with it.

WC 36, BB37 if you're doing that. Though I'd perhaps not get Willian and play Vardy in 34 and use the FT to do Fuchs -> Smalling/whoever

Do you feel GW37 is gonna be the biggest DGW? GW34 is shaping up to be chunkier than I ever remember.

I want to try to use the Bench Boost when I can buy the most DGWers

its looking likely that you can get 15 out in either gameweek so if you can get this out in 34 then you're looking well for a week 37 BB

I think GW34 will be the bigger of the two, as clubs who are still in the cup, and the teams they are schedules to play in GW35, need to keep GW37 free for games that need rearranging due to the cup semi's.

With 1 free transfer and this defence i might struggle to field 11 players:

    Schmeichel (Elliot)
    Johnson*** Dawson* Borthwick* Nyom (Moreno)

I have 3 Leicester players already so im wondering if Johnson -> Wollscheid is worth it? Seems very sideways but Stoke dont have blanks and great fixtures. Johnson out is a big blow for my team. Unless Wolly is a rotation risk regarding players coming back from injury?

As Soton have an in form Chelsea next i plan to do Nyom/Moreno -> VVD in GW28

Im seriously contemplating doing johnson to Bertrand this week. Cheaper than VVD, plays GW30 and occaisionally plays left wing back

I would say go for it but just not this week. Bertrand wont keep a clean sheet and doubt he would get attacking returns against Chelsea.

Im torn between Bertrand and VVD myself, this season just seems to favour centre-backs over full-backs

Mostly yeah, when they play 3-5-2 he plays CB and up for set pieces but he played wing back a couple of times. Also if they switch back to 4 at the back he-ll play LB

Agreed, obviously had a big injury lay-off and he-'s started playing CB a bit as well. Im hoping he'll come good at some point though and I kind of need the differential-ness tbh

He's not doing very well for bonus either which sways me more towards either Fonte or VVD, though his price is a great factor

Exactly, main reason people will be put off. He's a real bargain for a Saints defender that's nailed on though. I had Cedric from week 1 which I thought was a steal but I got serious rotation rage

Yeh up until last GW i was looking at Cedric, a couple people in my ML did that transfer and im so glad i held off.

May even double up with Targett and VVD, the former is great bench fodder

    Butland
    Toby, Bellerin, Collins, Fonte
    Sanchez, Firmino, Mahrez, Payet (c),
    Kane, Vardy (vc)

    Schmeichel, Stanislas, Francis, Aguero,

    Wollsch, Rose, Daniels, Bellerin
    Payet, Mahrez (C), Arnie, Eriksen
    Vardy, Kane,

    Henessy, Williams, Yaya, Kun

The new chip and WC structure has sent FFS planning into overdrive. Interested to see how it works out but honestly, I think it might end in tear-ridden cries of 'damn casuals!'

I was always planning on holding onto triple captain and bench boost for double gameweeks. I'm preparing for bitter disappointment. Imagine an Aguero double GW and you triple captain him, but then he gets a nasty tackle in the opening 5 mins of the first game?

I think this season is unfortunate that you can get away without really planning, as in the "casuals" lucked out that City and Spurs will be playing in GW30.

If next season is back to the premium priced player hauls, squad stretching, bargains having 3 weeks form as opposed to season long, then these chips will be infinitely more interesting.

GW27 - Bench Aguero, Silva, Firmino
GW30 - Bench Payet, Sanchez, Bellerin (if Arsenal go through)

I have 2 FTs and no real need to plan much in terms of the blanks.

    A) Ighalo + Firmino > Kane + Shaqiri/Arnautovic
    B) Firmino > 6.5m, use other FT to change Dawson/Francis to Soton/Lei
    C) Firmino > any priced mid, Kane be damned, and keep the other FT rolling for any DGW news

Would the new plan for GW30 be to have the absolute maximum 11 players, risking an unexpected injury or non-selection, leaving 4 players benched without a game and a free transfer to carry over to GW 31?

Only positive side of selling Mahrez 3 gws ago and bringing him back for this gw is that I got no value tied in him.

Easy to sell for dgw player if I want to.

Not much of a positive! Anyone that has Mahrez can sell for a DGW player now the season is nearing an end. Leicester end on a trio of tough(ish) fixtures too so if you sell Mahrez you won't need to bring him back in.

Scared I have no Chelsea cover, i know there are blanks this GW and GW30 but Norwich and Stoke look like decent games inbetween their blanks.

    Sanchez > Willian next GW?

    Cech
    Targett, Toby, Wolly
    Sanchez, Alli, Payet, Mahrez, Ozil
    Kane, Vardy

    Darlow, Simpson, Jags, Kun

Of course, got himself a red card for that move. To his defence, the ref had thus far sent off three of his team mates and given the opponent a penalty, which might feel a bit harsh.
