Scout Scribbles – Gunners Slip to Emirates Loss

Arsenal edge close to the Champions League exit door after suffering a 2-0 home loss to Barcelona. Harry Kane is set to play with a protective mask this weekend after breaking his nose against Palace. Cheick Kouyate’s one-match ban is rescinded by the FA, whilst Eliaquim Mangala is available for City’s trip to Kiev.

Gunners fall to Emirates defeat

Arsenal lacked the clinical touch as they succumbed to a 2-0 loss in the home leg of their Champions League match-up against Barcelona. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain started on the right flank but suffered a knock and was replaced at the 50-minute mark by Theo Walcott. Danny Welbeck came on for Olivier Giroud on 72 minutes, whilst both Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez played from start to finish for the hosts.

The Scout Says: The Gunners’ inability to breach Barcelona’s backline reflects their downturn on the attacking front of late. Since Gameweek 22, only three teams have mustered fewer goals (four) than the north Londoners, who posted the second-worst shot-conversion rate (5.5%) behind West Bromwich Albion (4.7%). This deficiency could be brought to the fore over the next trio of Gameweeks, with Spurs and Man United – two teams that chart in the top three for goals conceded – on their agenda. With a possible blank Gameweek 30 also on their agenda (should they overcome the Baggies in an FA Cup replay) those holding the likes of Sanchez (one assist in nine) and Giroud, who has netted in one of the last nine Gameweeks, may well be looking elsewhere.

Kane set to play with protective mask

Harry Kane sustained a broken nose during Tottenham Hotspur’s defeat to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup last weekend. Although the striker will be fitted with a mask so he can play against Swansea City this weekend, there’s a chance that Mauricio Pochettino will manage his minutes against Fiorentina in midweek to avoid further complications.

The Scout Says: Approaching a Gameweek in which the likes of Sergio Aguero and Romelu Lukaku face blanks, Kane’s 41% ownership can breathe a sigh of relief in the knowledge that the league’s joint-second-top scorer won’t miss any domestic action. Although there are question marks regarding his capacity to start in the second leg of Spurs’ Europa League tie, the extra rest would be welcome from a Fantasy perspective. Having notched five goals in as many starts, Kane offers stern competition to Jamie Vardy (four in four, home clash against Norwich City) in the captaincy stakes ahead of the Swans’ visit. The 10.1-priced marksman ranked joint-top among forwards for shots on target (eight) across the past four Gameweeks and is pitted against a side that surrendered the third-most big chances (nine) during that stretch. Spurs embark on a challenging pair of fixtures (whu, ARS) beyond the Swansea encounter, but they enjoy a favourable trip to Aston Villa in a Gameweek 30 pockmarked with blanks, ensuring that Kane remains a premier pick.

Kouyate ban overturned

The red card that Cheikhou Kouyate received during West Ham’s 5-1 win over Blackburn Rovers last weekend has been rescinded by the FA. As such, the Senegalese midfielder will be available for Sunderland’s visit in Gameweek 27.

The Scout Says: Despite already equaling last year’s four-goal haul, Kouyate has been a peripheral figure on the Fantasy scene due to the form of his West Ham team-mates., In light of Manuel Lanzini’s return to action and Victor Moses’ recent form (one goal and assist in two outings), Michail Antonio becomes a serious rotation risk for the Black Cats clash, with Slaven Bilic expected to revert to a 4-2-3-1 system. Couple this with Hammers’ injury-prone stable of forwards, and Dimitri Payet sticks out as their only enticing source of attacking coverage. The France international has discovered his groove over the past week, bagging three goals and two assists in a pair of starts. It’s hardly surprising, then, that he places third among all players for “transfers in” (77,000) before a home clash against a Sunderland outfit that ranks top for away goals conceded (36). Looking past that match-up, two testing head-to-heads (TOT, eve) and a blank in Gameweek 30 discourage further investment, though.

United confirm fixture postponement

Manchester United have confirmed that their Gameweek 35 trip to West Ham has been postponed and will require a new date. This is due to the fact that both clubs go head-to-head in the quarter-finals in Gameweek 30, so therefore one of them will make the last four of the cup and with the semi-finals taking place on the weekend of Gameweek 35, their league match needs to be rescheduled

The Scout Says: Given that both sides are also without a Gameweek 30 fixture due to their FA Cup head-to-head, this means that they now will have two blanks and two doubles apiece to follow. Looking at the possibilities, Gameweeks 31, 34, 36 and 37 (i.e. weeks where there are no European matches scheduled to take place) are the likeliest scenarios, though with so many ifs and buts right now, those holding the likes of Dimitri Payet or Chris Smalling are unable to plan with too much certainty until the new dates are finally revealed.

Mangala returns for City

Manuel Pellegrini revealed that Eliaquim Mangala is back in the frame after recovering from a hamstring complaint:

“We have similar squad that we played in the last Premier League game. The only player that has recovered is Mangala.”

The Scout Says: Following Vincent Kompany’s comeback last Gameweek, Mangala will likely be consigned to bench duty for the remainder of the campaign, with Nicolas Otamendi partnering the Sky Blues’ captain in central defence. Manuel Pellegrini’s propensity for rotation at the full-back berths means that Kompany represents our favoured route into a Man City rearguard that’s struggled for consistency this term. Our immediate interest in their backline is limited by an imminent blank and subsequent trip to Liverpool, but a favourable run from Gameweek 29 (AVL, nor, MUN, bou, WBA) and the promise of a double Gameweek somewhere down the line should renew Kompany’s allure.

    Any opinions?
    1. Lukaku to vardy or
    2. Aguero to vardy
I would get to keep lukaku vs villa and have no barkley, whilst hoping aguero strugles against liverpool, then gw 29 do lukaku to aguero.

Going with 1 only cos Lukaku has 2 blanks(compared to Kun's1) and getting Vardy in is 1 less player you have to worry about during the blanks.

Regarding hoping Aguero struggles, that is an additional level if stress I'm not too keen to add to my already trying season. He could very well be that GWs highest points scorer.

City will be keen to keep up with ARS and LEI to make that game in hand count. Bedsides, Kun will have a go at home to Villa no less in the next game.

I've seen some mention CL might cause him to be rested but Pellegrini always plays Kun when fit so am not too worried there.

              Ahhh ----I follow now.
Multi-planned transfers hardly work out as something always crops up (injury, suspension, etc) that'd be my only caution.

That said, if your team's in good shape, that move does look very good on paper. You get to play all the easier fixtures.

Ok. I don't want to doubt your honesty, but I need evidence to believe that. I'd bet that most people on here had never even heard of _any_ of them before the season, let alone seen them play (possibly some had seen Coman in CL, but probably paid no attention seen that most of the forum completely missed Martial against Arsenal). Not saying you hadn't, but still, to put them on the top of your list of future awesome players when they've hardly featured on adult level at all and were certainly not the most hyped young prospects of their respective nations last season.

...hmmm... on the other hand, seen the way I put my question, just _how_ near your list they were could be quite decisive information.

lol you'll just have to trust me, i take time to follow emerging stars in all sports, as a gambler, this is where i can gain some advantage. For example, 2 and a bit years ago, i had 200/1 on Spieth to win the Masters in the next 5 years. This is my betting edge

I just won't buy it. You would nowhere find a list of football prospects from last season that put any of these in the top 20 even. They all emerge big time this season, and all of the sudden you had had them at the top already before it? It smells too much of a captain hindsight to just name the three most hyped youngsters of _this_ season.

Let's put it this way: name me your current top-3 players who have not yet broken through but you're sure will become big hits, and I'll bookmark it.

I think it's very fair to have had them on your list of promising players already before this season. All were promising youngsters. But to top or near top that list before they actually have had anything resembling success on adult level... yeah, right.

Siggy. Better Form, more benchable for your better midfielders in GW28, on free kicks and possibly pens. All round just a better player

But vs Spurs and Ars in next two, where Arnie has Villa then Newcastle

Arnie has been shocking. Don't rate him. Siggy can easily score a free kick against either of those.

Form v Fixture, the age old struggle all fantasy managers must battle with in their quest for points. Stats cannot help you here, you must do the only thing possible in this situation and go with one's gut.

        This. Completely agree.

I have Arnie due to my gut, but all of the stats / form point towards Siggy and my gut is notoriously similar to Moreno/Lukaku in terms of trolling.

Stats are unnecessary in this situation because the one without form obviously won't have good stats. The fixture suggests even Mr Bogdan could keep a cleanie and Monsieur Boselli would bag a hattie.

penalty = big chance, shot on target, shot inside the box. they both look good and from a non fpl point of view it's great to see siggy with his confidence back (come on iceland!), if it boils down to 2 good options then the option with the better fixtures wins imo.

have to admit i've only seen swansea play properly twice recently though, v everton and watford. siggy looked the same as always, a classy player who can pick a pass and is a threat from range. for me he needs either bony or penalties to be a pick, he used to have the former, had a spell with neither when gomis was a starter, now he has the latter.

      like arnie tbh.
a niggle and an illness will obviously slow anyone down. a 2 week break will hopefully do him wonders, and maybe more importantly his teammates too, bojan especially was in serious need of a break after hughes killed him over xmas. if they can get that trio together again the goals should come flooding back with arnie heavily involved.

p.s arnie is also on free kicks and pens

yep 2nd choice behind bojan, should be same with siggy and gomis though with whispers gomis is starting to work his way back into the mix.
i prefer siggy's set-piece expertise, but he's 'just' a cabaye who looks like a must have after a couple of pens. feel the ship has sailed

I have owned Ayew since day 1, and for the nice upcoming fixtures/lack of blanks for Swansea I really want Siggy.

Non Vardy owner here. Happy Igalho owner for 27. Not got funds to swap anyway. Reviewed a lot of much appreciated replies on this previously but still undecided.

    A) Roll free, Play VVD/Bellerin in 27, bring in Vardy 28?

    B) Aguero > Vardy, Play 343. Bring Aguero back in 29. Still able to field 11 in 30. Firmino plays in the Aguero void in gw 28

      Forster
      Toby Daniels Wolly
      Sanchez Ozil Payet Alli Mahrez
      Kane Vardy

      Mccarthy Bellerin Aguero Moreno

      1ft nothing in the bank

Team is in pretty good shape for the blanks. Siggy in for Sanchez for week 30 so I can field 11. I will also need to transfer Fuchs in for Moreno this week because of price rises, who would you bench?

Toby and Fuchs are certain to play. Daniels has a dodge defence and missed his last penalty. Wolly is a part of an awful defence that is overrated around here and Bellerin has a low scoring injury hit United.

      Thinking Wolly, thoughts?
