Digest

The Digest – Gameweek 31

Southampton’s in-form frontman spearheads a dramatic win over Liverpool. Norwich’s bid for survival takes a step in the right direction, whilst Riyad Mahrez and Harry Kane stake yet another claim to remain in our wildcards plans for the run-in, despite the lack of a double.

The Player

A goal and two assists in Southampton’s stunning comeback win over Liverpool continued Graziano Pelle’s recent return to form.

Having bagged a brace in a 2-1 win at Stoke in the previous Gameweek, the Italian served up a 15-point haul on Saturday – his highest of the season – to take his tally to nine goals and seven assists in 20 league starts.

Pelle’s weekend haul means he’s racked up 28 points in the last two Gameweeks – put into perspective, Sergio Aguero has produced 30 points in his previous seven.

Granted, the Saints’ lack of a double Gameweek is a major deterrent for any would-be investors with wildcards in hand right now. Nonetheless, Pelle’s penchant for going on scoring streaks – he racked up four goals and five assists in five outings between Gameweeks 4-8 – suggests he could still thrive as a Fantasy option over the run-in.

Sitting just four points off fourth spot, the Saints’ testing trip to Leicester is then followed by a trio of encounters with Newcastle, Everton and Villa’s dodgy defences. With a Champions League spot still in the balance, the Italian’s renewed confidence may well prove decisive as Ronald Koeman’s side look to build momentum on the back of their weekend win against the Merseysiders.

The Team

Whilst Newcastle and Sunderland had to settle for a point apiece in the Tyne-Wear derby, relegation rivals Norwich distanced themselves from the bottom three with a vital away win at West Brom.

Having ground out a goalless draw with City the previous weekend, Alex Neil’s men managed to nullify a Baggies side that had picked up ten points in four, thanks to a trio of wins over Everton, Palace and United and a draw at the King Power.

With their confidence on the up, Norwich are showing they have the stomach for a fight and the stats show they have tightened up considerably at the back, conceding just one big chance over their last four matches. For those who have already played their wildcards, the likes of Timm Klose – with five bonus points collected over the last two – is emerging as a late-season budget enabler at 4.2. Wes Hoolahan, with two goals and a pair of assists in his last four home fixtures, and weekend goal hero Robbie Brady (two goals in his last four starts) may prove influential in the absence of the injured Nathan Redmond.

Up next for the Carrow Road club is a trio of fixtures that may ultimately determined their top-flight status. The Canaries entertain both Newcastle and Sunderland in a pair of proverbial six-pointers, with a trip to Selhurst Park – where Palace have lost six on the bounce – sandwiched in between.

With a double Gameweek 37 offering back-to-back home encounters against United and Watford, Norwich may yet harbour some Fantasy appeal as Neil attempts to prevent a slide back into the Championship.

The Talking Point

Last week’s double Gameweek announcements give us plenty to plan and prepare for over the current international break.

As we look to assemble our squads to take advantage of the remaining schedule, there’s a concern that going “all in” on the double Gameweek sides, and using a bench boost chip to field 15 players with a pair of fixtures, may be a little overzealous.

This is compounded by the recent showings of Riyad Mahrez and Harry Kane, who are becoming increasingly crucial to their side’s title bids.

Whereas Jamie Vardy has scored just once in the last seven Gameweeks, Mahrez has averaged 6.7 points over the same period and netted Leicester’s winner in two of the last three. Kane 16-point return at home to Bournemouth, meanwhile, means he has delivered successive double-figure hauls for the first time this term. At a time when Sergio Aguero is struggling for form, the Spurs man has proven a very capable armband alternative.

The Gameweek 35 schedule, where six teams – including five of the sides with doubles in the previous round of fixtures – also has to be factored into our planning. Whilst the likes of West Ham, Everton and United face the weekend off, Leicester and Spurs are both handed home comforts, with Mahrez hosting Swansea and Kane welcoming West Brom to the Lane.

Given that the duo are two of the three most popular players in Fantasy Premier League, with 68% and 46% ownerships respectively, parting company won’t come without risk – Mahrez has 11 double-figure hauls to his name this season, whilst Kane is now up to seven, highlighting their explosive potential.

Whilst the allure of the double Gameweeks is irresistible, maintaining a balance to our 15-man squads – in terms of both form players and fixtures – will be key. Obviously, opting for a double Gameweek player could pay off but given their current levels of form and reliability, is parting company with one, or both, an unnecessary risk too far?

Probably being asked a million times on here already but haven't being on in a while. I have Bench Boost, AOA, Triple captain and WC left. I'm sure someone has come up with some brilliant article about when to use them. Would anyone have the link?

If not what is the general consensus on the best time to use them?

BB and TC should be used in 34 and 37. Your call as to which to use when; most seem to be paring up BB with their WC.

AOA is a dart throw really. Use it when your defenders have terrible fixtures. Could be good to use GW38 with triple Arsenal attack

Pretty much split between WC 33, BB 34, TC 37 and TC34, WC 36, BB 37.. Just whatever suits your own circumstances.

AOA is pretty useless.. I used it last week and I was 2 points better off and I considered that a success. I wouldn't worry if you end up not using it at all.

    Hmm.

With Lukaku on the agenda for later in the season, it looks as if I am buying Kane back for WBA at home and Chelsea away, at best.

Perhaps the right thing to do is just to risk it without him then.

I'm keeping Kun and swapping for Costa GW37.

But going with Martial and then switching to Sturridge might actually be a better long term plan than Kane.

And Sturridge vs Newc is potentially just as good as Kane.

You know, I keep looking at this and kind of think that it might be a good idea to WC in 33, TC in 34, then plan for the BB in 37.

    Which looks better?

    TC TEAM:

    DDG
    Bellerin Rojo Sakho
    Ozil (TC) Mahrez Coutinho Payet
    Lukaku Kane Aguero
Butland / Lingard Daniels Simpson (

*(SGWers on the bench except Mahrez/Kane so I'm not completely destroyed for GW35)

      DDG Migs
      Monreal Olsson Delaney 5.3City Janmaat
Ozil (c) Mahrez Coutinho Payet Lingard
      Lukaku Kane Kun

I kind of like the first option, feels like it might well give me more bang for my buck.

      What do you reckon?

I really hope that the CPL - EVE game is rescheduled before the GW33 deadline. If it is rescheduled for GW35, the WC33 strategy seems a no brainer, whereas if it is reascheduled for, say GW36, most WC33 teams will likely only have Lukaku from EVE and CPL.

Ok, so there aren't many CPL players that I would want in my team, but a DGW36 would put Everton against BOU and cpl, and I know that I would want three Everton for that and the DGW37 that will follow.

Hmmm, nearly the opposite to my plans.

Looking to use TC gw34, as I won't have the required bench without using wildcard to make using BB worthwhile. I'm unwilling to wildcard for the first dgw as I feel I can get half set for that with only a hit or two and if I was to wildcard I might end up in a mess for the latter GWs. Therefore I'll wildcard GW 35/ GW 36 and use BB GW 37.

Sunday's Manchester derby averaged 1.17 million viewers in US on NBCSN. 8th-most watched Premier Lge game ever in US

They should have kept the advertising as the Manchester derby, and just shown the spurs game instead.

We are really spoiled here in the states now. I remember growing up 20 years ago, and best PL coverage you got was a tape delayed Villa-Blackburn match on a Tuesday afternoon. No analysis, no pundits, nothing.

Just realised I only have 4 weeks of the season left to use AoA. Maybe I'll do it this week, although I'm not expecting much from Silva away to Bournemouth

I wouldn't worry too much about it . It hasn't worked out for most people .

Who would he play instead of?

I'd probably use it to play Silva tbh, he is capable of a couple of assists on any given day still.

I was going to bench Mahrez or Ighalo and both of them got double figure hauls . Does that count ?

Would you use AoA this week?

    Alli - Sigurdsson - Mahrez - Silva - Sissoko

    Aguero - Kane - Vardy

    Defenders are:

    Azpilicueta v Villa (a)
    Rose v Liverpool (a)
    Williams v Stoke (a)
    Daniels v Man City (h)
    Bertrand v Leicester (a)

I have 1 FT so Sissoko or someone else could become one of the 3 main West Ham mids

Not a fan of Alli @ Liverpool and I think you could do better on a one week defensive punt, or even an attacking punt, (Arnie?).

    Butland, Forster
    Ivanovic, Bellerin, Alderweireld, VVD, Huth
    Ozil, Siggy, Arnautovic, Mahrez, Alli
    Aguero, Kane, Vardy

2FT, 1.2 in bank, WC intact

Any suggestions on how to use my transfer(s)?

Hi guys, here's my first take. 😉 Would appreciate your thoughts.

    WC in GW33

    De Gea - Elliot
    Bellerin - Rojo - Fuchs - Sakho - Janmaat
    Firmino - Payet - Mahrez - Ozil - Sanchez
    Lukaku - Rashford - Aguero.

    Thanks guys.
