Spot the Differential

Spot the Differential – Gameweek 38

We head into Gameweek 38 with many mini-leagues still on the line, as Fantasy managers seek some last-minute inspiration. This time around, Liverpool’s midweek goal hero is joined by City’s up-and-coming young striker and Southampton’s Senegal marksman in our quest for differential success.

Christian Benteke

Understandably, Jurgen Klopp is primed to name a second-string side for Liverpool’s trip to West Bromwich Albion, given that Liverpool are schedule to clash with Sevilla in the Europa League final on Wednesday. Daniel Sturridge appears unlikely to play any part at The Hawthorns, which paves the way for Christian Benteke (8.0) to spearhead the Reds’ attack. Despite notching just 180 minutes across his previous five appearances, the Belgian frontman mustered three goals and one assist, with a last-gasp midweek leveler at home to Chelsea sure to boost his confidence.

Although Benteke was only granted a 16-minute cameo against the Blues, he charts joint-third for attempts (nine) and joint-second for shots inside the box (seven) among forwards in his last two outings. Taking the season in its entirety, Benteke’s goal frequency (one every 173 minutes) is only bettered by five counterparts who’ve amassed at least 1000 minutes of pitch time. The same can be said of his shot frequency (26.4), which places sixth under the same parameters.

Liverpool’s concluding match-up pits them against a Baggies outfit that’s recorded just five clean sheets at home all term. In addition, only six teams have conceded more big chances on their own turf (30). Liverpool’s attack on the road also measures up favourably – Tottenham Hotspur are the only team that’s chalked up more attempts (272 vs 252) than Liverpool, underlining their swashbuckling style away from home under Klopp.

Kelechi Iheanacho

In the wake of back-to-back braces against Stoke City and Southampton – which boosted his tally to seven goals (695 minutes) for the season – Kelechi Iheanacho (4.8) shot onto our radar as a tantalising budget forward. Having started each of the last three, the Nigerian marksman will be savouring the prospect of taking on a Swansea outfit that’s missing key first-team regulars such as Ashley Williams, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Lukasz Fabianski.

Razor-sharp finishing has been Iheanacho’s most striking attribute, illustrated by the fact that he ranks top among all forwards for shot-conversion rate (31.3%). Moreover, only Sergio Aguero (98 minutes) lays claim to a superior goal frequency (110.7). Illustrating how central he’s become to the Sky Blues’ attack in recent fixtures, Iheanacho ranks joint-second for touches (181) and second for touches in the final third (95) among forwards since Gameweek 35.

Swansea managed convincing victories over Liverpool and West Ham United in their last pair of outings, yet Man City will be heartened that only three teams shipped more goals (nine) in their previous quartet of league ties. The Swans also surrendered the joint-fourth-most shots inside the box (38) and the second-most big chances (13), obliging defensive form that could play into the hands of the league’s top-scoring attack.

Sadio Mane

Given that Sadio Mane (7.4) has recovered from the virus that forced him off early against Spurs, it would be remiss for us not to shine a spotlight on the 5%-owned winger.

Mane – who netted a three-minute hat-trick in the final home clash of last season – boasts five goals in four starts and next faces a Crystal Palace team that will surely be shuffled ahead of their FA Cup final date with Manchester United next weekend.

Scrutinising the underlying stats, Mane ranked joint-top among midfielders for shots on target (seven) across his previous four appearances. It’s also worth noting that, despite registering just 281 minutes, he accrued three more penalty-box touches (31) than any of his midfield rivals. In home matches, the Senegalese wide man ranks second among midfielders for shots inside the box (35) and joint-second for shots on target (18).

Mane has five double-figure hauls to his name this term, which highlights his potential for explosive returns against an Eagles rearguard that places joint-bottom for shut-outs (two) and fourth for goals conceded (31) since Gameweek 20. Alan Pardew’s men will certainly be tested by a Saints attack that bagged 10 goals in their previous trio of home encounters and placed top for goals (11) across their last four outings.

I'm not being funny, but Doos isn't like Berbs. He's accessing info anyone could online.

If you'd listened in mid-week, then you would've sold Carroll:

    But he started.

ExWHU is clearly a reliable (if not nailed on) source. Posting something like this without some decent information would be dumb on his part... He'd be proved wrong immediately and lose credibility - the one thing that he thrives on.

Plenty of ex-employees still know current employees from their time in a job. Doesn't seem unreasonable that he'd have some info available. Does he have a decent track record is what I want to know.

That's not what I'm saying. And I'm not bringing Doos' or Berbs' reputations into it either. But there are big fan accounts who get big followings because people tend to remember the few times they are right over the times they are wrong. People can be very adept and shrugging it off as given 'bad information'.

Yes/ No challenge has reached 95 entrants so far. I'm extending the deadline to tomorrow at noon rather than the originally proposed 12.00 deadline today. Mistake on my part as I forgot the games weren't on until Sunday.

Anyone who has entered, if you notice any mistakes with your guesses on the table below please let me know and I can change it.

Guys - just wondering. If Liverpool win the UEL final does that set up a DGW for them first game of next season?

Just thinking that Chelsea had a couple when they won the UCL and UEL a couple of years ago. Must be the same again, right?

Could start the season how a lot of people ended this if so... being trolled by Klopp;s rotation ^^

Sevilla winning and Liverpool missing Europa League from the PL table would be so good for FPL next season

I believe we would see another Liverpool performance from when they nearly won the league a couple of seasons back. Most weeks they'd be fresh to play a high-pressing, intense game against teams that might have played midweek.

Identifying the key players early on is important though. Perhaps Moreno, Milner, or whoever they sign up front. No more rotation hopefully....

And then we can add triple Chelsea into the mix, which I believe is also essential next year with no Europe. *drools*

        Eh? You're confused.

Djilobodji plays for Werder Bremen, and his late winner for Bremen against Eintracht Frankfurt sends Stuttgart down with Hannover, and has kept Bremen safe from the relegation play-off spot.

Frankfurt are the ones who now must play the dreaded play off game, against Nürnberg....

          • 10 Years

No, you're confused. Stuttgart lost to Wolfsburg (and was already 2-1 down when Djilo scored) the match they needed to win in order to have any chances for the playoff spot. Even if they had turned that match around and Djilo had not scored, Stuttgart would still have been directly relegated. So all that goal did was that it sent Frankfurt to the playoffs.

          1. Polaris - The Mortal Coil
            • 10 Years

Yeah of course Stuttgart played Wolfsburg, that was a brainfart. Stuttgart still had a chance of survival before todays games and didn't get the results they needed, so were sent packing.

            1. Camp No No
              • 10 Years
              7 years, 11 months ago

The simple point is that that Djilo goal just had 0 effect to Stuttgart going down. Even if he had not scored and Stuttgart would have scored 8 goals in dying minutes, Stuttgart would still have gone down due to their worse goal difference. They needed Frankfurt to win at Bremen to have a chance and Frankfurt was not winning.

Cheers. I'm safe having been in the relegation zone pretty much all season. Phew!

I already did Carroll > Long

have Haz and Cesc would come on if Payet is really out (or PvA/Reid if I reorder). If he's really out would it be worth a hit to Tadic, for example, even though I also have Mane? I'm thinking no

messed up TC and 38 points behind ML leader...too far surely...get eztra punty? rival will captain sanchez and has same forward line as mine 🙁

    darlow
    smalling bellerin gabriel pva
sanchez payet willian -- milner coutinho
    carroll martial kun

A: milner + coutinho >> mane + tadic (-4)..and captain one of them
B: coutinho >> mane and captain...
    C: anything else?? long? arnautovic?

sanchez is such an obvious captaincy choice...no point captaining him and mkaing up 38 points somewhere else?

Got Mignolet, Robles. Should I take a hit to get someone in for Robles or hope Migs plays?

    Cheers!

Djilobodji last minute goal vs Frankfurt, saves Bremen from relegation and sends the opponent instead.

No, it puts Eintracht Frankfurt into the relegation play off place, who now have to play a two-legged match against Nürnberg of Bundesliga 2.

Sure, Frankfurt goes to playoffs, but that goal didn't send Stuttgart to absolutely anywhere.

Well it did, because before todays games Stuttgart had a chance of survival, but they needed to win. They lost to Bremen, so Stuttgart were relegated.

You have zero clue what you're talking about it seems.

They needed to win, and Bremen to lose. Neither would had happened without Djilo's goal You have no clue of what you're talking about, it seems.

So Stuttgart were in fact sent down after todays games then? Right.

I believe that's all I said above. Stuttgart have gone bye-byes, not Frankfurt like you said. 🙂 Frankfurt are still very much a Bundesliga side if they beat Nürnberg.

The only team who went down anywhere due to that goal were Frankfurt relegating to the playoff spot earlier occupied by Bremen.

Check out Camp and his usual massively pedantic self. 🙂 Not the first time, won't be the last. Anything for a internet argument...

It's rather simple. Only one team was already relegated before todays round of games, Hannover 96. Another was always going to occupy the other relegation spot after today, we just didn't know who. Now, as a result of todays results Stuttgart are the others who've been relegated. Correct? So they were infact sent down, because they had a chance of survival before 3pm. 😆

Hey. Alright done some two transfers at a -4 but after the news Payet might be out another transfer might need. Be honest. I've already won my money league but playing for pride in another which I am third (29 points behind).

    Gomes
    Bellerin, Cresswell, Moreno, (Kirchhoff, Targett)
    Payet, Sánchez, Fábregas, Tadic, Townsend
    Agüreo, Giroud (Defoe).

Was thinking of getting Mane in but he's a player that can burn me. What should I do?
