Team of the Season – Riyad Mahrez

Having only shown occasional flashes of his ability during the previous campaign under Nigel Pearson, no-one could have predicted Riyad Mahrez’ impact on the Premier League this time around. The arrival of Claudio Ranieri transformed the Algerian into Fantasy royalty, however, as he went on to produce 17 goals and 11 assists to spearhead the King Power club’s charge to the title and earn the PFA Player of the Year accolade.

THE STATISTICS

With a mere four goals and five assists during his maiden Premier League campaign, the Algerian was priced at a modest 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) at the start of this season.

Mahrez soon became the hottest property in FPL after producing five double-figure hauls during the opening six Gameweeks, courtesy of five goals and three assists. By Gameweek 8 his price had risen to 6.5, and the midfielder continued to deliver for his ever-increasing ownership, blanking just twice between Gameweek 9 and 17.

Mahrez then blanked in five matches over Christmas and New Year but that drought was short-lived, with the former Le Havre player then managing a further three goals and four assists over Leicester’s next seven matches. His production did tail off slightly towards the end of the season, only scoring two goals in his final nine outings, while his price peaked at 7.4 in FPL in Gameweek 30.

Mahrez ended the season as the highest scoring player in FPL this season with 240 points – put into perspective, that was 40 points ahead of Mesut Ozil, who took second in the centre of the park, and superior to last season’s 233-point haul earned by Eden Hazard as the number one midfielder.

The Foxes flier also led all players in FPL for bonus points (with 38) and appearances in the Dream Team – indeed, his total of 11 times was at least twice the number of any player aside from Swansea’s Andre Ayew (six).

Mahrez’ average of 6.6 points per game also took first spot. That was well ahead of fellow midfielders Mesut Ozil and Dimitri Payet, who averaged 5.7 points per game (ppg), while forwards Sergio Aguero and Vardy managed 6.1 and 5.9 ppg respectively.

The statistics are also all the more impressive when you consider Mahrez lost penalty taking duties, having scored four times from the spot prior to missing against Bournemouth and Aston Villa, seeing Vardy reclaim penalty duties during the second half of the season.

THE PROSPECTS

After enjoying such a sensational campaign for the Foxes, we’re clearly going to see Mahrez’ price in FPL rise considerably from the 5.5 he opened up at last summer. The Algerian looks set to be elevated to the premium price bracket, which could place him in illustrious company alongside the likes of Hazard, Ozil and Payet around 9.0 – 10.0, with Alexis Sanchez and Kevin de Bruyne perhaps a tad more expensive as the highest priced midfielders in the game.

Whilst we anticipate more rotation on the Foxes left flank, with Marc Albrighton and Jeffrey Schlupp jostling for pitch time along with Demarai Gray, Mahrez is likely to be immune to any potential tinkering, though – in a similar situation to this season – we can expect Ranieri to manage his minutes towards the end of matches.

When it comes to analysing Leicester attacking assets, it could come down to a straight choice between Mahrez and Vardy next season, with few Fantasy managers likely to find a place for both given they should be subject to significant price hikes this time around. As already mentioned, Vardy ended the season with penalty duties – although he did miss from the spot against Everton – which may well factor into many managers’ decision.

Whilst Mahrez obviously won’t give us the same sort of value next time around, the stats certainly suggest he may still flourish as a premium-priced option in 2016/17. Second in the centre of the park for shots on target (39) and fourth for efforts in the box (48), he sat third for goal conversion (19.8%) amongst all midfielders with more than five strikes to their name.

Granted, no one could have anticipated Hazard’s fall from Fantasy favour this time around, which goes to show that no two seasons are the same. Nonetheless, the signs are still favourable that the Algerian could have a productive year next time around as Ranieri’s side prepare to defend their title.

I'm looking at something like this currently. I like the punt on Hamsik because he has the easier 2 teams first up. Otherwise I was thinking about Konopyanka because his second game is against NI and he's a classy player and always a threat.

    Sommer, Rui Patricio
    Boateng. Prodl, Vertonghen, Schar, Matel
Alaba, Alli, Hamsik, Perisic, Xhaka (alb)
    Ronaldo, Giroud, Muller

So just to clear up the captain change rules for myself...

You can change your captain 5 times in theory over the 1st week, one in each game...going through groups A, B, C etc each day until you get a decent score off one of them. (obviously you'll lose the double points when you remove it)

    Griezmann - Friday
    Kane - Saturday
    Reus - Sunday
    De Bruyne - Monday
    Ronaldo - Tuesday

No captain changes or manager's subs I think, unfortunately! Pick your 11 and captain (no VC) and autosubs does the rest.

On my phone and on my break and haven't figured out the menu to find hot topics.

They should update their rules if that's the case cos as I read it the captain's points are doubled at the end of the matchday but there's no mention you can change captain every day like in UCL game.

          Managing Your Team

          Choosing Your Starting XI
From your 15-player squad, select 11 players before the Matchday deadline.
All your points for the Matchday will be scored by these 11 players; if one or more doesn't play then they may be automatically substituted with the players on the bench.

Your team can play in any formation providing that one goalkeeper, at least two midfielders, at least three defenders and at least one forward are selected at all times.

          Selecting a Captain
From your starting XI you can select a player as a captain whose score will be doubled at the end of each matchday. If your captain does not play a minute then no player's score will be doubled.

Prioritising Your Bench for Automatic Substitutions
Your substitutes provide cover for unforeseen events like injuries and postponements by automatically replacing starting players who don't play in a Matchday.

Based on the priorities you assign automatic substitutions are processed at the end of the Matchday as follows:

If your goalkeeper plays 0 minutes, he will be substituted by your replacement goalkeeper provided he played in the matchday.
If any of your outfield players play 0 minutes, they will be substituted by the highest priority outfield substitute who did play and doesn't break the formation rules (e.g. If your starting team has three defenders, a defender can only be replaced by another defender).

No but people from FFS, like Roscola, do email UEFA for clarification and receive clear rules which they then post here. They are then made into a hot topic. But hey, why bother following people's advice?

The reality is that people expect A LOT from us these days. That's how high we've raised the bar.

If Liverpool or United would have won the COC, reached the CL semis and finished fourth in the league, everyone would be lauding them.

I take that as a compliment though. Should make us come back stronger next season.

We won the title twice, league cup twice and the FA cup and have reached the CL semis and have Pep to mange now in such a short span of time after 'spending that money'.

            Very impressive in my books.

And, the league position is not the only criterion to judge how the season has fared. You have got to take into account the cups as well.

Who stopped United from getting those players?

They have got a lot of money and it's not our fault that they spent it on dross like Anderson,Falcao etc. They have failed to nail a single world class signing off late. Not acceptable from a club of United's stature.

And I repeat AGAIN that we won something else and acheived a lot in the CL which United didn't. So, the league comparisons stand null and void.

Just a couple of important strategy points for this Euros.

Firstly, you get two wildcards, one before the knockouts start and another to use at any time. As you get a generous amount of free transfers during the knockout stages to replace eliminated players, it makes sense to use your wildcard during the group stages. This leaves you realistically with two options: load up your initial team for gameweek 1 and then wildcard for gameweeks 2 and 3, or plan your team for the first two gameweeks then wildcard ahead of gameweek 3.

    Secondly, from the rules:

    "Player Prices
Player prices will change after the group stage depending on performance during the tournament."

This means your team value for the knockouts will depend on your player price changes at the end of the group stage. This suggests it should be profitable to your team value to load up on players who have had a good first or second gameweek, even if you think they aren't necessarily the best players for gameweek 3. For this reason I'm going to plan to wildcard after gameweek 2 and play "casual" for the final gameweek of the group stages.

4 points for a hit is a good incentive to be prudent.

I think I'll try for QF WC. Just 4 FT that stage. Good thing about group stages is you know the players involved and most will still be in it for final group games. WC for QF allows you to revamp after 8 teams are eliminated. Means also that you can go for broke in last 16 round, a few form players that could be eliminated after great games.

Interesting idea. I think I'm just banking on a few of the big nations having a couple of walkable last 16 match ups.

Your first point is very, very important IMO.

I think I'll build my team for the first 2 GWKs and wildcard before the last games, when we know which teams are fighting for something and which one are just chilling already

I wondered why Grosicki was getting so much attention on here so I took a look and saw he has 8 goals in 36 games for Poland, not too shabby. But then I looked further and saw his 4 competitive goals came against Gibraltar with the others in friendlies against Iceland, Finland (2) & Czechia

First draft on the Euro's, quite a few players I don't know much about so would appreciate any feedback:

    Sommer / Almer

    Evra / Dier / Gunter / Wawrzyniak / Sapunaru

    Hazard / Siggy / Alaba / Alli / Mario

    Griezmann / Muller / Milik

    My concerns are:
    * No Spanish players
    * 3 midfielders playing on final matchday (4 in md2)
    * No Ibra, Ronnie or Lewandowski

Completely off topic. I would hope some of people here play video games to stress relief, etc etc name your reason.

My GPU decided to take a permanent vacation and told me i should replace it.
Currently i am looking at GTX 960 2gb or r9 380 4gb. I am not great at this and i have viewed multiple answers online, but still no closer to a decision. They both cost around 260e here and buying them online will make them cost the same amount due to atrocious taxing rules at customs.

Need to say i will be playing Overwatch and maybe a Moba here and there. Maybe Final Fantasy if it comes out on the PC.

    Octa-core processor
    Crosshair IV Formula Motherboard
    12gb Ram
    620 W PSU
    SSD

Looking for a budget friendly option, even other cards are ok just meh. Want to play in HD obviously. And the card that took a vacation is GTX 560 TI.

I always find this to be the best reference when trying to find a card for a certain budget - http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/best-gpus,review-33382.html

I'm planning on building myself for the first time in a long time soon for Gaming (Think I'll be jumping on the VR bandwagon).

For what you're looking for, you should fine the 9xx cards drop in price significantly in the coming weeks with the 1070/1080 coming out. I'd maybe hold off and see if you can pick up a cheap 970 once they are!

I've very recently build a new pc, so I have a few tips.

Processor: I recommend i5 6600k - Very powerful for the price, and can be overclocked. If you don't want to overclock, remove the K, and save money. Wouldn't worry about number of cores, as the multi-core processing will generally be done by the GPU. Just get the most intelligent and fast performing. Reviews are great at this.
RAM - 12GB is good number. Not just about size though, try to get the fastest (ddr4 will show the fastest speeds)
PSU - Get a good one, from a trusted brand. Because if this faults, the rest of the PC could blow up.
SSD - Hard drive is the slowest component of a PC system, except the human. So an SSD is almost essential in this day and age to expand the bottleneck. Loading screens and waiting for the PC to start will be a thing of the past.
Grpahics card - The only way to gauge which one is better than the other is to read/watch reviews. I recommend the r9 390 (Been playing Fallout 4 on Ultra at 60fps). Directx12 is the future, and AMD cards work far better with DirectX12 so are more future proof.

Don't know how much you know, so sorry if this patronising 😀
