Team of the Season – Sergio Aguero

After racking up 26 goals and ten assists in 2014/15, Sergio Aguero entered last season as the most expensive player in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) at a price of 13.0. Despite a disappointing campaign for Manuel Pellegrini’s side, the Manchester City frontman still managed to find the net on 24 occasions and clinches the final slot in our Team of the Season, with over 25% of the votes cast.

The Statistics

Aguero endured a slow start to the season, registering just one goal and a single assist in his first seven matches. Those that kept faith in the Argentine were spectacularly rewarded in Gameweek 8, though, with a five-goal salvo in the 6-1 demolition of Newcastle bringing home 25 points. Frustratingly for Fantasy managers, the Argentina striker suffered a hamstring injury just days later while on international duty, and would subsequently miss City’s next four league fixtures.

In fact, Aguero’s season only started to gain momentum from Gameweek 20 onwards, when he scored seven goals in six appearances, including double-figure hauls against Crystal Palace and West Ham. As a result, his price soon climbed to a season-high of 13.6 in FPL by Gameweek 25.

The City front man also ended the campaign in strong form, scoring ten goals in as many matches, including a hat-trick against Chelsea in Gameweek 34.

Ending up with 184 points in FPL, Aguero finished up as the sixth-highest scoring player in the game, and only the fourth-highest scoring forward, behind Jamie Vardy (211), Harry Kane (211) and Romelu Lukaku (185).

Tellingly, though, Aguero did lead all forward for points per game (ppg) with 6.1, ahead of Vardy (5.9) and Kane (5.6), illustrating his penchant for picking up points if he can steer clear of the Etihad treatment room.

Aguero was comfortably the highest scoring City player for the season, though, with Joe Hart (134) and Kevin de Bruyne (131) some way behind the former Atletico Madrid man.

THE PROSPECTS

Although Aguero fell well sort of the 216 points he registered in 2014/15, we can expect him to remain the most expensive player in FPL next season. Having now scored 17 or more goals in four of his five Premier League seasons, the Argentine – despite his on-going injury concerns – remains one of the most potent Fantasy forces around.

Furthermore, the arrival of Pep Guardiola is likely to reignite our faith in City’s attack after a recent decline in output. Having scored 102 times on their way to the 2013/14 title, the Etihad outfit went on to net 83 and 71 goals in the subsequent two seasons as they toiled for a cutting edge under Pellegrini.

The incoming manager’s first-team plans could also shape our thinking elsewhere. If Guardiola hands Kevin de Bruyne his preferred central support role, the Belgian could well kick on from a debut campaign that saw him serve up 5.2 points per game – an average bettered only by four other midfielders. Should De Bruyne stay around the 10.0-mark and Aguero remain at 13.0, some may be tempted to save budget at the start of the season.

There’s also the pitch time of Kelechi Iheanacho to consider. The young Nigerian netted an impressive eight times in just 847 minutes in 2015/16 – indeed, his average of 105.9 minutes per goal was second only to Aguero for the season. Iheanacho is likely to be moved into the mid-price category but if he nails down a regular role under Guardiola, could prove exceptional value in the campaign to come.

Although there’s plenty of competition for our three-man frontlines from the likes of Kane, Vardy, Diego Costa, Anthony Martial, Daniel Sturridge, and Romelu Lukaku, Aguero’s capacity for explosive scores and reliable armband hauls will make the Argentine a must-have for many.

If he can remain injury-free, a fully-fit Aguero under the guidance of Guardiola could be a match made in heaven for Fantasy managers. Bearing in mind that the Argentine was still quickest amongst all forwards for minutes per attempt (20.5) and goal (101.8) in spite of his side’s decline in the final third last term, there’s arguably room for improvement as Pep prepares to take the Etihad hotseat.

Also is KDB well worth the 0.5 over either Reus or Hazard?

Hm I'm not totally convinced by Grosicki since he mostly just scored against weak opposition. Also Ozil isn't much of a goal threat

fair point re: grosicki, i'm not convinced either. i expect germany to rack up plenty of goals and ozil to be reliably ticking over even if he's not particularly explosive. i'm not convinced by martial either, he's gonna have a lot of competition for gametime and his end product still needs work. i'm also not fond of hazard because the form+fixtures combo isn't great and i'm still uncertain that belgium are able to put in coherent team performances on the big stage.

Would say Giroud + Grosicki + Haz(KdB) since I guess you have Müller.

he's going to spend more money than we already have so, even with the influx of quality managers, I feel like getting 4th won't be good as far as making a statement about our "return"

I just don't want to get carried away.. he will be tasked with getting us back into the CL just as LVG was when he took over that will be the first step.. sure it doesn't seem like a big jump as we only missed out on goal difference this season but it will be vital for us.. Fancy us to go all the way in the EL

I think they might. But it depends how they handle the Champions league and how they start the season.

Last year they did well while alo managing the Europa league until the end stages so they can handle the matches in principal.

They will also be one of the few sides going into the season with a settled squad. Man U, City, Chelsea etc will be facing overhauls and there is no guarantees any of these teams will start the season firing. Spurs you would think might

Players we need to make this tounament to do ok (hopefully)
            Smalling and Cahill
            Alli

If those attackers can take their league form into the tournament in a system that utilises them properly and the back four holds up England can win it but the back four worries me.. big time

Yup. The back 4 is pretty poor, the full backs are pretty interchangable but I hope we don't end up having to depend on Stones in a knockout match

I think the start of the season will be important and how they go about integrating new players into the side.
When you are all about team spirit then you chuck a few other people in it could mess it up.

If they start the season well before the champions league kicks in who knows what will happen?

Man U should have signed Ranieri. Leicester play far more attacking football than Mourinho does. Much more in keepin with the side and unlike most of teh otehr new managers being parachuted into the top clubs he does know how to win the league

Well this is it.. if they can recruit well and retain that spirit and those top players then i see them right up there again..

I love the tinkerman mate and his team played some blinding stuff last season but even he realised he had to tighten things up in the second half and grind out the 1-0 score lines.. exactly like Jose and Chelsea the season before

Because it would be mental. Its so so unlikely. Look at the squad. These players aren't world class, they completely over performed for ONE season and even if ONE player performed as well as they did last season I'd be astonished .

Also. Leicester have lost their momentum and surprise factor. No one will be underestimating them like last season up until the last 10 weeks.

No one will be attacking Leicester and instead they will show them respect and not play into their hands.

Leicester should aim for top half next season, and don't be surprised at all if they fail.

Fair points mate i'm not suddenly labelling them world beaters there is a lot to be said for like i said the spirit in the camp and the sheer effort they throw in to every game.. mix in Mahrez magic and Vardy's goals and that's a pretty strong side.. i mean we are talking about the champions here however unlikely that would have been last year.. they won that on merit tbf.. with champions league football they will attract some very big names too and if they can get those in and in the right places without destabilising things they could be a fair bit stronger.. certainly shouldn't be dismissed

I am strugling to choose between Muller and Lewandowski. On One hand Muller is part of the better teams and will undoubtedly score goals through the tournament and is a touch cheaper.

On the other hand Lewandowski is a great has a great 1st fixture and would be a probable captain GW1.

All of these sides have qualified to get there so they are all capable of turning it on.

I hope you guys do well but I think you will struggle when it comes down to it. The switching of captains of course makes any choice less of a risk as long as you have a few options to choose from.

Lewandowski is top for international goals and shots so he should be a danger against anyone.

Yeah of course he is arguably the best centre forward in the business just wouldn't surprise me to see him blank against us and the Germans.. by the same token could score against both..

A fair argument but Lewandowski's stats suggest he gets more goals and shots for Poland than Muller does for Germany.

    Patricio, Kozacik
    Alba, Dragovic, Dier, Chirches, Vrsaljko

Well I understand we can swap players about mid gameweek. Fair enough, I am sure it will be obvious once the tournament starts. I just really wanted to look at the rules. I was having a look through the old articles and couldn't se the one where it is explained. Any idea which article has it laid out?

it was a hot topic and i'm not sure if those are archived unfortunately. someone else could probably pull a link though. i suspect there'll be an article on it in due course anyways.

most important thing to keep in mind at the start is that you should always begin a gameweek with your first XI as the first 11 who play chronologically, and captain someone who plays on the first day.

The community round-up article archives all hot-topics. This is the one you want.

And to Cheeseoid, no you cannot act retroactively. Once someone has played you cannot lift them off your bench nor captain them.

It makes the most sense to save the WC for GW3. Prices will change after the 3rd matchday, so it is a good idea to get a lot of players who are likely to rise in price before the knockout stages.

      1. mccormibar
        • 11 Years
        7 years, 11 months ago

Thanks. I suppose it also helps get a good team out as teams likely to rotate will be clear by then also.

      2. Kun Tozser
        • 8 Years
        7 years, 11 months ago

Rotation expected for GW3 though so potentially the players you want may not be playing.

Still think it's the best time to WC but not primarily for price rises.

          • 8 Years
          7 years, 11 months ago

Why not for price rises? I think that it's absolutely crucial to have a large budget for the knockout stages. As you said, a lot of rotation may happen in GW3, but that shouldn't affect your wildcard plans - players will be rotated in both your pre-WC and post-WC teams!

          1. Ruth_NZ
            • 9 Years

How do you know that? We have no precedent for how the price changes will work. Will they be 0.1 tweaks or 0.5 jumps? Unknown. Will players go down as well as up? Unknown. How many will there be? Unknown. All we know is that it will be based on performance in the group stage and as you have unlimited transfers available after the group stage you'll quite likely be able to catch any changes that way.

I know that before matchday 3 is generally considered the best route but I'm not sure. I could see a wildcard being useful before the quarter finals too.

              I agree Ruth NZ.

We have 3 transfers throughout the group stages, and l would hope to have a reasonable team by the end of them.

We then lose 8 teams but have unlimited changes and can go to 4 players from any one country. Next round, quarter finals, we lose another 8 teams and can have five players from each country but only 4 transfers. Surely that must be the best time to play it. IMO anyway.

Why GW3? You have unlimited changes in GW4 so surely it is better to hold your WC for the quarter or semi finals when you are down to just a few teams?

      • 12 Years

I think it depends on how you start the game. If you started off well and have the right players from the beginning, it makes more sense to WC in the knockout stages. Otherwise, a revamp of the team in the group stages look more suitable.

I can swap a player who played monday and were in my starting 11 with someone on my bench who play tuesday, but can I also swap a player who who play tuesday and is in my starting 11, with a player who played monday that are on my bench?

    Morning peeps,

With the McDonalds euro fantasy game are the rules similar to the premierleague one?

1 transfer per week? Change captain each week?

More like UFPL/previous McDonalds games - before the matches each day you can sub in any player who hasn't yet played for a player who has scored poorly. You can also switch captaincy before the start of the matches each day to any player who hasn't yet played.

      1 free transfer per week.
      1 tournament wildcard.
Unlimited transfers between the group stages and the knockout phase.

          Wildcard
The wildcard can be used to potentially make transfers free of charge.
It can be used only once throughout the tournament. The wildcard is played when confirming transfers that deduct points and can't be cancelled once played.

wow this changes my gameplan. I thought it's the same as the unlimited transfers between groups and knockout. they are too generous with the free transfers tho
