Euro 2016

Euro 2016 Team Analysis – Slovakia

Group B’s underdogs are UEFA European Championship new boys Slovakia, who open their campaign against Wales at 5pm on Saturday, June 11, before facing Russia at 2pm four days later and then England at 8pm on Monday, June 20.

The side bears comparison with Russia, with age and a lack of defensive pace, alongside a heavy reliance on counter-attacking football, likely to be a hindrance.

Underestimating Slovakia would be foolish, though – in their international tournament debut, the 2010 World Cup, they knocked out defending champions Italy on their way to the last 16, whilst a 2-1 defeat of Spain in qualifying confirmed a taste for big-name scalps.

THE ROAD TO QUALIFICATION

That home victory over Spain ended an eight-year undefeated period in qualification matches for La Roja, part of a superb early run when Slovakia won their first six group matches on the spin.

Things got a little jittery after that, with a draw, two defeats and no goals in their next three fixtures, before a 4-2 win in Luxembourg secured second spot in the group, five points adrift of Spain.

Coach Jan Kozak consistently sets up his side in a 4-2-3-1 formation designed to sit deep and hit opponents on the counter, and it worked well enough for his defence to keep four clean sheets and concede eight goals in ten qualifiers.

The big question mark remains Slovakia’s ability to adapt their tactics should they fall behind and it will be a surprise if they can muster enough resilience and offensive firepower to find their way out of Group B.

Over the last 12 months, Slovakia have played five friendlies, winning against Switzerland, Iceland and Georgia, and drawing with Latvia and Republic of Ireland. Kozak’s troops have netted at least twice in four of those fixtures, though managed just a single clean sheet.

Most Appearances Matus Kozacik, Marek Hamsik (10), Tomas Hubocan, Robert Mak, Juraj Kucka, Viktor Pecovsky (9), Martin Skrtel, Peter Pekarik, Vladimir Weiss (8), Miroslav Stoch, Adam Nemec (7)

Most Goals Marek Hamsik (5), Adam Nemec (3); Robert Mak, Juraj Kucka (2).

Most Assists Vladimir Weiss (6); Adam Nemec, Miroslav Stoch (2); Marek Hamsik, Robert Mak, Juraj Kucka, Stanislav Sestak, Peter Pekarik (1).

THE KEY TARGETS

Slovakia’s chief attacking threat comes from playmaker Marek Hamsik. The Napoli man is now 28 and close to his peak – he fired more attempts than any team-mate in qualifying, with five qualifying goals making him the squad’s top scorer. Priced at 7.5 in the official Uefa game, Hamsik recorded six strikes and 11 assists in Serie A last season and is almost certain to be the Slovaks’ most popular pick.

Former Manchester City wide man Vladimir Weiss (6.5) also caught the eye in qualifying, with six assists the joint-best return across the competition. Stationed on the left, Weiss created more chances than any team-mate in qualifying and is afforded a fair share of corner kicks. His ability to take on and beat opponents should also draw fouls and earn points in the Draft Kings game.

Lone striker Adam Nemec (6.5) featured in seven of the team’s ten group fixtures, scoring three times and providing one assist. Having also bagged a brace against Georgia on Friday evening, he looks to have strengthened his position as first-choice lone striker under Kozak.

In central midfield, Juraj Kucka (6.0 in Uefa) offers good all-round potential in the mid-price bracket. The AC Milan man was second only to Hamsik for attempts over the qualifiers and found the net twice, whilst he also made more successful tackles than any team-mate, heightening his Draft Kings potential.

THE LONG SHOTS

With Martin Skrtel setting you back 5.5, full-backs Tomas Hubocan and Peter Pekarik (both 5.0) are the cheapest of the nailed-on options in a somewhat unconvincing defence. As the team’s most productive full-back for successful tackles and key passes, the former looks likely to offer some value in the Draft Kings game. Keeper Matus Kozacik comes in are just 4.5 in Uefa, though, and played a part in all ten matches in the qualifiers.

Right winger Robert Mak (6.0) will struggle for our attentions, though he did manage a goal and two assists on the road to France. Mak’s attacking stats – double-figures for both shots and key passes – afford a degree of optimism, whilst the former Man City youth player also shares corner duties with Weiss and is top by some distance for crosses.

Upcoming Friendlies

Germany vs Slovakia (May 29), Slovakia vs Northern Ireland (June 4)

Today's Hot Topic - with Hull confirming their promotion back to the top flight and Burnley having already sealed the Championship title, how different do you feel it will be for the pair this time around? Are we expecting them to be better prepared and equipped and, if so, are they likely to be a more profitable source of Fantasy talent as a result?

Sounds like Bruce wants some answers from the board before he commits long-term.

Unless there is decent investment from either side I very much think it will just be more of the same from those two though...

Hull has a lot of good players - two young fullbacks in Odubajo and Robertson, a midfield three of Huddlestone, Livermore and Diame, and Snodgrass is a good player as well. That's a good base to begin with.

They need to replace one of Dawson/Davies with a younger and faster guy, a new keeper maybe, and a new striker to aid/replace Abel.

Pretty sure they'll beat the drop this time around.

Hull make little appeal at present. Middlesborough defence may be worth some investment but little else.

Burnley will be tough to beat but will hardly will be flush with goals I suspect. Again, defence might be the best bet.

Burnley are in very similar shape to how they were when they went down. Ings has been well replaced by Gray. Lowton has replaced Trippier. But this time they have experience on their side, most of them know what they are facing now and Michael Keane is turning into a high-class CB. They are a resilient team anyway and I think they will make a real go of staying up this time.

As for Hull, well the team coming up via the playoffs doesn't have a great record. Watford (2006), Derby (2007), Burnley (2009), Blackpool (2010), QPR (2014) and Norwich (2015) were relegated after 1 PL season. Crystal Palace (2013) were only rescued from that fate by the mid-season appointment of Pulis. Hull (2008) and QPR (2014) both came very close to immediate relegation and lasted 2 seasons. In fact only Swansea and West Ham can be said to have fully established themselves as PL teams after arriving through the playoffs.

Hull have also lost a number of important players since their PL season - Brady, Chester, N'Doye. Although they do have a fit Snodgrass now and Hernández has started to show what Hull paid £10m for. Steve Bruce saying "I have to be given certain assurances that we’re all moving in the right direction" after the playoff win suggests he knows the squad needs improving and isn't sure he'll get what is needed. I think Hull could well struggle as it stands although a possible takeover of the club might change the picture.

He looks quite a good pick , which the rest of text seems to allude to ?

Yeah, Mak's a decent option at 6.0 it's just Hamsik and Weiss are clearly stronger in terms of proven output over the Qualifiers and are the "go to" options in thier midfield.

How about this for a starting line up?

    Sommer, Almer

Hector, Jordi Alba, Dragovic, Denayer, Vrsalijko

    Perisic, Alli, Payet, Alaba, Glushakov

    Muller, Lewandowski, Shaqiri

Anything I could do to improve? Would prefer a better defence so may downgrade another mid if I can find a decent cheap option...

      First off, who's Glushakov?

Other than that, you have me tempted to make minor changes to my team to end up with something similar. Would quite like Alba, actually a credible GD4 captaincy option.

I'm actually tempted by Shaqiri myself with all his set pieces. Remember him scoring a hatty for me when I had him two years ago. I just can't get over the forward classification.

I have only just put Alaba in, thought he was actually a bit punty but read an article from back in March this morning which singles him out as the man for Austria. That swung me, plus will be high ownership.

Glushakov is a Russian centre mid, who should start I believe. I just can't see the logic on punting on Rafa Silva GD5 and potentially losing 2 points so need an alternative.

Yep, Shaqiri love, was brilliant to own in the World Cup. Relatively affordable and decent fixtures/group.

This is my most boring line up so far but it's solid and doesn't rely on punts. Early on there just aren't going to be decent cheap (and) solid options.

Saying that, I'll be putting Alaba in for the same reasons I put in Shaqiri and James Rodriguez in the World Cup. Alaba is staying.

I may still do that... Am still tempted to Captain Lewandowski v N.Ireland, those two are my longest standing choices.

Am just not sure it will be worth investing too heavily in midfield.

My memory is that most midfielders were a bit of a waste in the World Cup game and the points were in defence, it's a much shorter game than an FPL season and the odds are better of 1 of 4 defenders getting a clean sheet than 1 of 4 mids getting a goal/assist.

Also my thinking is that international matches are usually lower scoring, less explosions.

Would just prefer Lewandowski to Griezmann / Ronaldo / Kane.

I'm assuming this is a reply fail to your own post, but I would just like to say that I agree completely. And at the same time, you just made an argument to drop Lewandowski right there. 😛

Is it really worth putting 11.5 into him when, as you say, explosions during international tournament matches (a lot at stake in every game) are few and far between? Especially when you also take into consideration that you can switch captaincy between up to five different players - meaning that a missed Lewa captaincy brace possibly won't hurt as much as in a FPL type of game.

Agree in the sense that you're better off with a cheap early playing 5th mid and investing the difference in defence.
Completely stuck between Lewa & CR7 myself, very good argument for each imo.

The alternative is to use the transfers you get between the first 3 matchdays and have Lewa for MD1 and then transfer to Muller for MD2.

Appears that Sakho won't return, except if another CB gets injured, since Umtiti was called up. Deschamps like most managers wants to keep his defence line stable, not change it much, but the problem is that with all these injuries he has no choice, he will have to recompose it. The only nailed on defenders are Koscielny and Evra. The other places are up for grabs. Mandala was called up before Umtiti, so he's got an advantage, but you should watch the friendlies, I'm sure both will be tried. A bit same with Sagna and Jallet, We'd assume Sagna will start, but it's not clear, Jallet has been preferred before and performed well, so I would not be too surprised if he started. After the friendlies and possibly the first group match are over, the defence will be quite nailed if it has worked well (should, seen the level of opponents).

The fact that there are fair less subs that can be made reduces the appeal of small nation players as well. For the world cup we had squads of 22 or 23 so had room for a few punts especially with players of teams playing early each round. That isn't the case with a squad of 15.

Uh, is that Germany defence line going to be a rotation nightmare? I'm almost 100% sure that Hummels and Boateng will start, but when was the last time that both of them started the same time - and the laterals are a mystery.

Maybe it's no use thinking of that. I think they're going to concede anyway in early stages once they've scored their third or fourth goal of the match.

    Rul Patricio 4m

    Evra Lichtensteiner Ramos O'Shea Denayer

Alaba Hazard Perisic Weiss Rafa Silva

    Muller Long Lewandowski

how does this look lads, maybe downgrade Lichtensteiner to upgrade Hazard/Weiss to KDB/Hamsik?

Gignac, obviously. Or Martial/Griezmann if Deschamps chose to play one of them in their familiar CF roles, but so far he hasn't done that in the 4-3-3, so it's unlikely.

I doubt he changes formation now and as you say has been playing Martial/Griez on wings

Martial was played on the wing a lot under LVG too

              1. would not be a change of formation, just a change of the player playing CF, which might occur if both Giroud and Gignac fail to impress. 2. Martial is a CF by formation and has a great goalscoring record in that position, so he could be tempted to try that out in that case; Griezmann has impressed as a CF for Atletico too, so why not to try that. Many hope that one of them would start upfront for a more mobile front three.

He missed another one earlier this season, but fair enough. The main concern would be that he has never taken a penalty for France, so it would not be exactly taking him off the penalties. The question is, why would he all of the sudden be given the penalties.

Nobody knows that, because the top three would be Ribéry-Valbuena-Benzema, and all miss the Euro.

Gignac is the last one of the current squad who has taken a penalty for France, but he's not probably even starting (seen how much Giroud has scored in the recent friendlies). By the penalty record, I'd personally give the duty to Giroud.

I can see the midfield being:

Vardy is awful in that position and it's a complete waste to have him in the team, either play him up front in a central role or use him as an impact sub.

I think there's actually a fair chance Guerreiro will start. He's been given starts recently, and has impressed. In particular, he's started the friendlies they've won, and been on bench in the ones they lost. The coach might have a change of heart about that spot before the Euro. I'm not sure I'd get Guerreiro, but I would not trust Eliseu to be nailed on, because I'm quite convinced that Guerreiro will play some role in the Euro at least.

7.5 in the bank for one midfielder. Right now my priorities are listed as:
    A) Kroos (even though I have Ozil)
    B) Perisic

he is one of the main players for his country and Austria look a decent team with good fixtures.

England are big game bottlers and Alli is only breaking into the international scene.

So based on that last question, it comes down to this:

    A) Alaba+Vrsaljko
    B) Alli+Dier

Yeah but England can't defend at all. Alaba has all the set pieces for a very promising looking Austria side. I fancy Croatia to get more CS' than England I'm pretty sure Vrsaljko will start.

In that case, no, there's no starters at 4.0. You could do a Patricio-Lopes partnership though.

On second thought, there apparently are. Doos, I haven't even heard of these guys. What positions do they play?

First three defenders of various stripes, last one a goalie.

Lindelöf is a CB, I THINK the others are FBs.

Not bad for FBs! Hopefully decent attacking threat...

You might not like Sweden, and I am pretty sure that I don't - but CaptainCrunch is pretty keen on Lindelöf ...

Aside from Mak/Weiss and Alli I'm struggling to find mids around 6.5m. Any suggestions?
