The Numbers Game – 2015/16 Review – Watford

Up next in our series of members articles, which assess the statistics behind the 2015/16 season, is Watford.

We start off by looking at the Hornets’ team data in Quique Sanchez Flores’ solitary campaign at the helm and compare them to the rest of Premier League. After that, we analyse their first-team squad, main goal threats and creative sources in an attempt to gain insight on their prospects for the season ahead.

Tipped for the drop by many last time out, the Hornets were quick out the traps and racked up eight wins and five draws in the first 18 Gameweeks. Although Flores’ side failed to maintain momentum over the rest of the season and managed just four victories and as many draws in the final 20 matches, they were never in danger of relegation and ended in thirteenth spot, eight points clear of the bottom three.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Looks good but why do you need to double up on Everton attack? Maybe drop Barkley for Ayew initially and reassess after game week 3.

If Varane can't seem to nail down a starting spot at Real, although he just said he's staying, he could actually want a transfer. But he's injured as well, isn't he, and very expensive.

Young and injured sounds like a traditional Wenger signing, though.

He just missed out on Benatia too. That would have been a great immediate solution.

Three good names there, though Ginter won't move anywhere, but Murillo would be a huge punt, there's little certainty he would actually have the level, and I'm quite convinced Manolas wouldn't.

A worldclass DEF would have been great.. but knowing Arsene, they'll go for a midclass and low-price one.
I think Mustafi will be a good signing at just 24yrs of age and below 15M.

Else, if they don't want to spend, we can happily give them Sakho for 15M! 😀

I'm still not sold on Aguero, he wrecks the balance of my team every year and usually hits his stride come the end of the season. With kdb in the team, it makes me feel much better not including him!

This is really helpful. Southampton with a new manager though so they are a watch and see at the moment but it looks like Liverpool may start like a house on fire, I hope my Firminio pick will rack up the points.

I get what you are trying to do, but with someone like Eriksen should you not also look how he started off last season? Maybe he's a traditional slow starter to a season? I mean after all he hasn't played competitive football for 3 months with Denmark not going to Euro's and all...?

With fixtures etc do you even expect to find a correlation?

Yep i'm just trying to find hidden gems in there with respect to teams that have good fixtures this season. Southampton and Palace stand out.

Also makes me want to invest in a Firmino/Alli more since people are forgetting how good they are attacking wise irrespective of opposition.

                No problem.

Eriksen actually had an amazing start last season...

2 gls, 3 assist in first 8(actually first 5 as he missed 3 games due to injury)

So i've got a player who is nailed in my team and i've barely seen anyone even mention him on here. Bojan! When he is mentioned some random "he is not nailed" excuses are thrown towards the poster and his name is quickly forgotten. There is literally no stoke fan i know or have heard of who does not consider him nailed on. Will play in the hole and After 2 long seasons he has finally been classified as a midfielder. has got 11 goals and 3 assists in 2900 minutes of EPL football and scored 153 points(classified as a striker.. now he is a midfielder!). Is finally fit and is getting a proper preseason. And to top it all of he is priced at a bargain 6 million 😎

    1. Goodricke
      • 8 Years
      7 years, 9 months ago

I had him in my team for about 30 hours (one of the longest so far) but Arnie seemed a more solid option. But, as he is cheaper, i may revert to him later.

I swapped KDB and Mikel for arnie and Willian. I just hope it pays off.

      1. Valar(Keith)
        • 14 Years

I cant seem to take Bojan out. 6 million just screams value. watched the preston game and he was pure class(went of the post too). Tonight is the Orlando game. i've an inkling his bandwagon will kickoff tonight. Rumors are that Arnie signed a 4 year deal today too. so Stoke are looking VERY good atm. Arnie is just a bit too expensive when you have Bojan in the same team at a benchable price. If he was any cheaper i'd get him

Are you a Stokie then? I've been pondering him but need more info on the state of play at Stoke. Currently he looks a starter but Stoke are still bringing in fresh blood like Allen and maybe soon Berahino. Are you confident he's nailed on over the first few GWs?

      1. Valar(Keith)

the front 4 is pretty much settled. the only doubt is upfront with rumors of berahino joining.
        Shaq---Bojan---Arnie
        -----Diouf/Berahino/Walters------

Allen will play deeper in the pivot. Sobhi has been brought in as backup(was rumored to be loaned out straight away but they've decided to keep him)

It took him 2 seasons to rack up those 153 points and 2900 minutes because he keeps being rotated. This kills him as an option for me.

        • 14 Years

not rotated.. injured. he started off his career at stoke being rotated because he needed time to adjust to the epl. Since the time he did settle in towards the end of the 2014/15 season he has not been benched once by hughes unless it was out of sheer necessity ie injury

I've had Ibra in my team since first draft, but with now i'm consider to just drop him so I can have this team:

    Heaton, Foster
    Azp, Shaw, gabriel, Francis, Pieters/Friend
    Mahrez, Fabs, Ayew, Towsend, Redmond
    Aguero, Luk, Austin/Long

Looks so good, right? Is ibra a must have? Could be hard to get him in later on w/o WC though.

After such a nasty leg break, i am waiting to see how Shaw's confidence is. Many players don't come back mentally from such horrific injuries.

Ericsson at 8.5 seems a tad high. for 7.5 you can have Willian, Ayew or Arnie, then use the 1 mill for either a stronger mid, or change Shaw to Toby A.

And here's the full team for now.

    Foster Mannone
    Morgan/Gabriel Naylor Friend McAuley Evans
    Hazard Martial Bojan Townsend Deulofeu/Mirallas
    Aguero Vardy Wilson

Just the right amount of Flair and Balance to keep me happy 🙂

More template, I'm not even tinkering too much as the Euros are playing havoc with lineups.
          Fost/Heat
          Shaw/Azpi/Soare/Friend/Naughton
          Micki/Mahrez/Ayew/T'end/Capoue
          Aguero/Lukaku/Wilson
          Reasonably happy.

That looks really good. Soare may be a problem and so could Naughton(was i imagining it or did Rangel get his spot end of last season) but luckily we've got 2 more weeks of tinkering 🙂

Yea, if I've any doubt I'll dump them, those 4.5s gotta be nailed-more important to me than 3 way rotations, Vardy over Lukaku (with doubts) is tempting me. One of the Chelsea forwards could pay off too.
Def/Lukaku are my areas of concern right now.

GK - Beautiful. I'm comfortable putting a Foster next to a 4.0 because a game against an Arsenal is as fruitfull as a game against a Hull for me for GKs. More shots to save. Last year cheap GKs got a lot of good points against big teams.

Def - Too many eggs in one basket. Wbrom didn't end the season all that great. Spread it out a bit.

Mid - No issues whatsoever. All good punts.

For - Wilsons fixtures not a worry for you? I'm probably going Vardy too.

      Great draft in all.

I'm pretty sure that one of Foster/Mannone or Both will prove to be THE bargain keepers of the season. so i'm holding onto both at the start just incase the one i dont have does well and goes out of reach price wise.
I have full faith in Pulis. Also, having Mannone removes some of the pressure of playing too many WBA defenders in any given game.
And i love Wilson and Bournemouth. I'd rather Deeney but his fixtures are even worse. Dont trust the likes of Gray/Negredo yet and i'm pretty sure one of the Soton boys will prove to be a bargain but i'm not sure which one yet. So i'm playing it safe with Wilson.
Thanks for the comments btw LR

It's great apart from putting all your eggs in a Baggy basket. Presumably you've got to either play both McAuley and Evans or neither.

I'd probably play both of them for the easier fixtures post GW 3. for the average ones(there are no really tough ones in the first 7) i'd start just McAuley since Friend and Morgan provide adequate cover for those. Best part is Naylor can be played GW 1 and 2 and from GW 3 WBA's fixtures are spectacular.

Basically at 4.5 i consider the West Brom guys to be the best option hands down on their own. so would rather own them(be it on the bench as cover/as a double up when required) rather than going for inferior options(in my opinion ofcourse) like Ben Mee, Pieters etc

Very, Very good option. I'd swap Martial for him/Silva in a heartbeat if i dint have Aguero. and before people scream "Coverage does not exist" i know that. However, i prefer having attackers from different sides(atleast until the bandwagons settle) purely cause it gives me more matches to watch and increases the entertainment factor.

Was classified as a striker for the Euros. Also, Silva and him played very well together for spain and i can see Guardiola playing both of them in most games. you dont just break into the Spanish squad unless you are really, really good

Pep seems to have faith in him, so I wouldn't judge him as a Navas, but I'm worried that with KdB, Silva and Nolito (oh and, ere, Sterling) the points won't be spread too thin in the City attacking midfield.

Here are some of the stats to get you thinking…

    • 46% of the top managers had used their first wildcard before Gameweek 3.

    • 40% of the all time the Top 50 managers used 2 or 3 players who were on their bench in the previous Gameweek.

    • As much as 80% of the all time Top 50's Captain Pick was amongst the top 3 most popular in that Gameweek.

Why the lack of love for Sturridge here?

Can't see him on any RMT's and zero comments suggesting him.

Tho he is expensive, I would argue he is nailed on a team with a solid midfield (hard to know the right Fantasy-assets in there).

To me he seems to be the focal point of a potential very good offence. Probably also a good differential.

Is it the fixtures to start the season, or am I just plain wrong about him being a great 2nd striker next to Kun?

I think it's a combo of fixtures + other options just as good + the hivemind template of FFS.

I'm struggling to pick Studge over Ibra. But i'd really want Studge in my team too.

        Two 4.5 keepers (Foster/Heaton)
        Full rotation of 4.5 defenders
        Ayew - Bojan - Willian - Eriksen
        Studge - Kun - Ibra

Bojan to Gradel and Eriksen to Lamela would also give you the ability to get a 9.5 midfielder (Martial/Miki) in for Willian. You could also downgrade a 4.5 defender to a 4.0 in same scenario and get Hazard for Willian; having arguably the top 4 options from Liverpool, United, City and Chelsea while also having Lamela as your Spurs cover.

Agree the strength of mids should benefit him and possible spread the points thinly amongst them. Negatives are obvious the fixtures and injury record. On goal scoring record worth the bucks I think.

he is a great option and I think there is love:)) he is in the middle between Zlatan and Kaku. Those thinking Zlatan will explode grab him, those thinking he won't grab Lukaku. Also a lot of people are destracted by Pool's poor fixtures, which shoudn't affect their scoring potential, but there you go
