Moving Target

Moving Target – Joe Allen

In a busy day of transfer activity at the Britannia, Stoke completed the signing of Wales international Joe Allen on Monday for an undisclosed fee, reportedly of around £13 million, just hours after making Egyptian winger Ramadan Sobhi their first new addition of the summer.

The former Liverpool midfielder put pen to paper on a five-year contract with the Potters, and speaking to the club’s official website, expressed his happiness at completing the move:

“It’s been a whirlwind 48 hours for me but I am delighted to have finally been able to put pen to paper. I was really excited as soon as I heard of the Club’s interest and it wasn’t a difficult decision for me to make. I am incredibly excited about my future here at Stoke City.”

The History

Born in Carmarthen, Wales, Allen joined Swansea City’s youth set-up at the age of nine, and progressed all the way through to the first-team, making his league debut as a second half substitute in a 6-3 defeat to Blackpool in May 2007.

Over the following few seasons, the midfielder continued to gain first-team experience at the Liberty Stadium, while he also spent a brief loan spell at Wrexham in 2008, where he scored one goal in two appearances.

It was during the 2010/11 campaign where Allen really established himself as a key player for the Welsh side, making 40 appearances, scoring twice and providing five assists as Swansea secured promotion to the Premier League. In 2011/12, the midfielder continued to make giant strides, bagging four goals and as many assists as the Swans secured an 11th place finish in the top flight.

When the-then Swansea manager Brendan Rodgers took over at Liverpool in the summer of 2012, he moved swiftly to capture the services of Allen, signing the Welshman for £15 million.

Allen’s four seasons at Anfield were ultimately disappointing, though, with the Wales international never really establishing himself as a regular starter, while niggling injuries also hampered his progress. In 132 appearances for the Reds in all competitions, Allen scored seven goals and notched five assists.

After representing his country at Under 17, Under 19 and Under 21 levels, scoring three goals in 28 matches, Allen made his senior debut against Estonia in May 2009. He was a key player for Chris Coleman’s side during their run to the semi-finals of Euro 2016 this summer, starting all six matches, and was named in UEFA’s Team of the Tournament. He currently has 31 caps, but has yet to score for his country, although he has registered three assists. Allen also represented the Great Britain team in the London 2012 Olympic tournament.

The Prospects

Although Stoke boss Mark Hughes heavily favoured the 4-2-3-1 formation last season, the Welsh boss has interestingly been experimenting with a 3-5-2 system, among others, during pre-season.

In either formation, Allen looks set to start alongside Giannelli Imbula in central midfield, with the Frenchman’s physicality and athleticism appearing well suited in contrast to the Wales international’s strong passing game and tenacity in the middle of the park. The pair could certainly start together in the double-pivot in the 4-2-3-1 then, with Glenn Whelan perhaps an option in more of a typical defensive midfield role in either the 3-5-2 or 4-3-3 systems, allowing Allen and Imbula to push slightly further forward.

It’s worth noting Allen made a tackle every 18.9 minutes last term, quicker than any of Stoke’s midfielders, while the Welshman made more interceptions than any other midfielder in Euro 2016.

His addition could help provide improved protection in front of a backline that only kept 10 clean sheets last season, and nine in 2014/15, although the fitness of Ryan Shawcross, who continues to be plagued by back issues, is likely to be critical for the prospects of the Potters defence.

From a Fantasy perspective, it could be that Erik Pieters (4.5) emerges as the stand-out Stoke option should Hughes utilise the 3-5-2 formation, operating at left wing-back, while the 4-2-3-1 would likely see Marko Arnautovic, should the Austrian not be on his way to Everton, and Xherdan Shaqiri, take up the wide roles, and provide intriguing midfield choices.

Allen’s best season in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) came in 2011/12 with the Swans, where he racked up 117 points, but the majority of his four goals and four assists came when he played in a central attacking midfield role. He has since chalked up just four goals and three assists over the past four seasons, so despite being favourably priced at 5.0 in FPL this season, the Wales international offers very little Fantasy appeal due to his minimal attacking threat.

Stoke’s fixtures over the opening four Gameweeks (mid, MCI, eve, TOT) also mean their Fantasy assets are unlikely to be in high demand as we draw up our initial 15-man squads, with a favourable run from Gameweek 6 onwards (WBA, mun, SUN, hul, SWA, whm, BOU, wat, BOU) likely to be when FPL bosses look to bring in Potters players.

The signing of Allen should certainly see Stoke’s evolution under Hughes continue, with the former Liverpool man ideally suited to a more possession-based philosophy, given his ability to dictate the pace of matches.

From a Fantasy perspective, Allen’s energy and positional awareness alongside Imbula may provide improved protection for the back four, boosting the prospects of Stoke defenders, but with finishing not a strength of the Wales international, he’s not expected to be a genuine option for the cheap fifth midfield spot in FPL. Nonetheless, his tackles and interceptions suggest he could be one to consider in games that reward defensive actions such as DraftKings.

    ok, so..any changes needed?

    Foster Jak
    Azpi Bellerin, Fernandez, Friend, Evans
    Mahre KDB Ayew Alli Feghoulli
    Aguero Gray Diomande

your mids are very good bc of your front line obviously and I like the cheaper front line version, but that is too cheap for me. If a 7 or 8m player steps up, it will take you at least two transfers to afford him.

Think the Diomande gamble is too big, especially with Gray. The only was is up with him which will mean transfers and possible hits

    Thoughts?

    Foster
    Shaw Walker Morgan
    Mkhi Eriksen KDB Karkley
    Kun Defoe Wilson

    Jaku Kightly Wolly Lenihan

Not a fan of the price of my front line, but I like Defoe and Wilson, both are good players. It does help make me have a very strong midfield which I like. Thanks in advance.

Yeah that's the only thing putting me off. Defoe has good fixtures so I might not upgrade him in the first few weeks but if I need I could downgrade a mid as there is usually a cheaper option who starts well and then upgrad wilson

yeah, i agree with you, I think il upgrade diomande to an Austin, as i like having a strong mid.. but then i need to get rid of Bellerin or Azpi to free up funds... what you think?

Its amazing the amount of managers that WC in GW2/3/4 and instantly get the rewards.

Yet you could argue that those who score well in GW1 could be flukes.

But it always seems to work.

If you WC nearer Xmas you tend to ruin your team.

    Coincidence?

Use your WC when your team dictates it

There's no "correct" time when to use it.

People that want to increase TV will likely use it in GW4 when the long international break is on and they want to increase the chances of 0.2m risers.

Some will want to watch how teams unfold over the first 5-10 GWs before basing a team around it. Some teams might start off good and fade away, others will start off slow and get into good momentum.

Some will have gotten really unlucky with injuries, suspensions and will need a WC to restructure at any given point.

Then there's those that won't need to WC by having a sustainable team, only needing a transfer here and there to make minor adjustments.

I don't think this is necessarily true. It's just that you don't tend to hear from the ones who wreck their team in GW2,3,4 - only the ones who do well.

I always try to use my instincts with the wildcard, not a fan of planning when to use it

Last couple of seasons there has been a week that's just made me think now is the time and it worked reasonably well

I held out WAY too long before WC'd last season; saw it as a badge of failure despite my defence being a farce for ages. Still got my best ever finish by May, but it could have been so much better. I'm not planning to WC early this season, but I'm more open to the idea if I muck up my squad.

Good in theory, but in practice I've found that perfectly calibrated home cheapie rotations never work out as planned and I always regret not having started with a premium or two after being seduced by too many expensive attackers: Ibra, Hazard and Kun in your case.

Souare's start is looking in doubt and Kone/VVD are under new management so hard to predict. I do think VVD will be in the top 5 defenders by the end of the season though, so I like him as a pick.

Midfield is looking good, I would just downgrade Ibra to Costa/Lukaku and bring in Azpi and another premium defender if it was me.

Each to their own though, so good luck. If that plan comes together you'll be off to a great start

isn't there a risk that by holding out for £50m for Stones, Everton might end up being stuck with him, which didn't work out too well for them last season.

They should just be delighted that someone is willing to pay £42m, and get it done as soon as possible before City realise they were sold a dud! 😉

He's certainly no dud. As a Toffee I'd be delighted to keep him and have him learn his trade further under one of the best ever ball playing centre backs.

He can only improve wherever he plays, and in fairness Nesta and Maldini would have looked all at sea under Martinez' lack of defensive shape and organisation.

My only concern if he moves to City is whether he'd play regularly enough to warrant selection.

Starting lineup is exactly the same as my W1 lineup, except I have Gray instead of Wilson. Also considering Long or maybe even Carroll instead.

Would also consider Evans instead of Kone and possibly trading de Roon for a more proven 5. Looks decent though.

Like it. As I've said to a few I don't get the Ayew love but otherwise solid.

If Arsenal don't buy then Gabriel will be great value

Good team, but I prefer going down the cheap 5th mid route to avoid a benching headache. Downgrade Gradel and use the extra £1m elsewhere.

Midfield is too cheap for my liking. If one of the heavy hitters in midfield start firing you'll have a headache getting them in

      Your thoughts lads?

      Heaton/Jakupovic
      Azpilicueta/Shaw/Ward/Friend/Evans
      Phillips/De Bruyne/Townsend/Ayew/Mahrez

Should I downgrade Townsend to Bolasie or Cabaye and upgrade Evans to Dawson?

I don't think that not having Aguero in the early stages of the season is in fact to much of a gamble. He's way out of his fitness so I think it could be more of a repeat of the previous season when Aguero was pretty much shambolic be his standards right at the start of the 15/16 campaign. Too much money in that fella to gamble going with him and restrain yourself from other better "at that specific moment in the season" options.

It's looking fairly rosy for all three of them after the first couple of friendlies.
Will be interesting to see how the dynamic works with Lukaku in the side though.

Deulofeu has played as a forward thus far and benefited from this. Would imagine Lukaku takes that slot when back though.

However, looking at Koeman's lineups for Southampton there could be a direct correlation between the Soton players he put out and the way the current batch of Everton players may line up (based on the current squad - am expecting 3 or 4 incoming faces)

        Lukaku > Pelle
        Deulofeu > Mane
        Mirallas > Tadic
        Barkley > Davis

Which player is causing you the biggest issue at present?

      For me it's Harry Kane.

Positives - good opening fixtures for a good attacking team, explosive potential and the best captain option in GW2.

Negatives - expensive, poor recent form and no Dembele for GW 1-3.

Aguero and Vardy haven't budged from my team for a while now, and it's between Kane, Ibra, Lukaku, Costa and Gray/Negredo for the other spot. Edging towards Kane I must say. Proven, good fixtures, captaincy material, stable attacking team.

That would make for a very expensive front 3. I'd forget Kane as there are plenty of options at £6.5m to choose from which allow upgrades elsewhere.
