The Numbers Game – 2015/16 Review – West Ham

Our series of articles, which review the numbers behind the 2015/16 season, comes to its conclusion with a look at West Ham.

First up, we cast an eye over the Hammers’ team statistics in Slaven Bilic’s first campaign in charge and compare them to the rest of the Premier League and the previous season. After that, we then take a close look at their first-team squad, main goal threats and creative sources ahead of the season kick-off in just over two weeks’ time.

After finishing in twelfth place in 2014/15, the club parted company with Sam Allardyce and installed Bilic at the helm as they looked to cultivate a more attack-minded style of play in their final season at Upton Park.

It’s fair to say that the Croatian made an instant impact – away wins over Arsenal, Liverpool and Man City in the opening six Gameweeks set the trend for what was to follow, as the Hammers finished in seventh spot on 62 points, just four points behind fourth-placed Man City and 15 more than they managed in Big Sam’s final year.

Any of you guys going with KDB? I'm really undecided. 10.5 is a lot for someone who you wouldn't captain. But, then again, he is capable of being one of the highest scoring players.

Didn't see much of him at Celta de Vigo, but at the EC's he was one of Spains most dangerous players. He could have a good linkup with Silva.

I'm in the same dilemma today:

KDB plus a 4.5 is the same price as Tadic plus Ayew.

      Yikes. T&A seems much better.

      alternative was:

      Forster / Heaton
Gabriel Evans Pieters / Friend Robertson
Ayew Townsend Miki Hazard (or KDB)
      Aguero Kane Long (or Gray)

      but I was worried it's a bit template'y;)

I just re-read it, I remember is from last season. Great perspective when thinking about value and team make-up.

          Yes.

BUT that assumes that player value is relevant. If the 9.5m+ players perform well then it will be and my calculations are valid.

But if we get a season like the last one where Vardy, Mahrez, Alli & co. were tearing it up whilst Hazard, Sturridge, Rooney, Costa and many other premiums were dismal, then 0.1 will be worth very little at all. 😕

Add up the Final Scores of all 3.5million teams last year
(Any season before is pretty much invalid bc, Chips)

Add up the Team Values for all 3.5millions teams last year

Scores / Team Value = Points Per Million

Maybe better to only look at teams active past say, Xmas?
Or, perhaps only those that made the Top 100k / 500k?

      How actually to do that?
      Meh, if I could I would, but I can't so I won't. 🙂

Please help me guys.... Team with Ibra:

    Schmeichel (Jaku)
    5.0m - Evans - N Taylor (4.0m - 4.0m)
Hazard - Mkhi - Siggy - Townsend (Capoue)
    Agu - Ibra - Gray

    Team without Ibra:

    Schmeichel (Jaku)
    Shaw - Evans - N Taylor (4.0m - 4.0m)
Hazard - Mkhi - Siggy - Eriksen (Capoue)
    Agu - Ibra - Gray

So is it a bet on fixtures or faith in the team?

Yeah, this. Was great at 4.5 with a knack of scoring when auto subbed in. 5.5 though.....

Diego Costa.... what's going on? If nailed for GW1 he's straight in!

Batshuayi could become a star, but I thought Conte played with 2 strikers. It depends how he'll be lining up his team, but I think Costa will be his nr. 1 striker for GW1 at least.

Please help me choose from the below:-

    A - De Gea
    Azpi Morgan Soaure
    Silva Ayew Mkhitarya Townsend
    Costa Aguero Wilson
    Subs Jaku Fernández Evans Fletcher

    Or

    B - Hart
    Friend Morgan Shaw
    Hazard Ayew Mkhitarya Townsend
    Lukaku Aguero Wilson
    Subs Jaku Pieters McAuley Capoue

B is better mainly due to the defence. I alse think hazard will do better than silva and you already have city coverage in aguero. As for costa vs lukaku a lot can be said, but everton have easy fixtures and that is where lukaku excelled last season

That'd settle Ayew - Sigurdsson debate for me, but they're bringing a striker in anyway.

Ayew was still scoring the goals when Gomis played in front of him.

Stones (City) owners, what are your thoughts on him once he moves?
I know that he's a cheap way into City's defence, but do you expect Kompany to be out for long or just assume he's gonna walk into their team with that 50m price tag?

I think he walks right in, Pep has been quite specific in why he wants him, and it's because he offers different qualities to those of Kampany's.

He walks in over who? I think both Kompany and Otamendi are better defenders for now.

Perhaps you do, and perhaps they are, but why would City pay 50m for a player they don't want to play him?

Well, Guardiola knows Stones is very desirable all around England and is going to be a top class defender, so he's definitely a longterm buy as well. City has a shortage of English players and we all know they need them. Top managers know that a price tag can't be the sole reason to start someone and tend to play their best players. Otamendi and Kompany are better (for now) and if they stay better (and fit), they'll be ahead of Stones.

I don't think it's down to the quality of the existing players, it's down to whether they fit the style & formation of the team he wants to play. That's how I see it anyways

Good point, but from what I've seen Guardiola wants him mostly because he's a ball player, but unfortunately for Stones, Otamendi and Kompany are good ball players as well.

I think he'll be a regular because he matches the style of football Pep wants.

Prefer him at Everton to start the season with the fixtures though

I see he wants a ball player, but Otamendi and Kompany are both pretty good at that imo

Pep loves a rotation however, he also loves his defenders to be able to dribble/pass the ball good etc so yes
