The Stock Check – Gameweek 1 – Sunday

A stunning performance from Philippe Coutinho at the Emirates overshadows even Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s Premier League debut as Liverpool hit four in Arsenal’s backyard. Here’s the Stock Check following Sunday’s matches.

On the Rise

Philippe Coutinho
We thought the debate on Jurgen Klopp’s midfield was settled. However, Coutinho’s display at the Emirates already threatens to change matters and have us reconsider Roberto Firmino as our top target.

Coutinho simply sparkled, fetching a pair of breathtaking goals and is likely to end the Gameweek as the leading points scorer. He is already officially first transfer bandwagon having soared to the top of the “transfers in” ranks.

Worryingly, he limped off in the second-half having dealt the damage, although Jurgen Klopp has since confirmed that his withdrawal was caused by cramp rather than a hamstring injury.

We’ve always had concerns on Coutinho’s consistency as an FPL asset but should he profit from the trip to Burnlye in Gameweek 2, he will already become difficult to ignore.

Sadio Mane
Mane also came out of the Arsenal victory with plaudits. A superb solo effort capped an effervescent performance and offered a reminder of his explosive qualities. Mane looked at home in Klopp’s line-up on the right of a front three and, like Coutinho, if he delivers again at Burnley, his stock will close further on Firmino.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic
It was almost inevitable that Ibrahimovic would score on his Premier League debut. Again, the Swede often dropped deep at Bournemouth and both his attempts on goal were from outside the box. That won’t bother his 42% ownership or the 21% who handed him the Gameweek captaincy.

Wayne Rooney
While Ibrahimovic will get more attention, the United skipper emerged from the Vitality Stadium with a goal in a busy display of some promise. We’re not convinced just yet but, based on these early signs, it’s possible that Rooney could outperform his 9.0 price tag.

Anthony Martial
Another stand-out performer in Jose Mourinho’s ranks – Martial looked sharp and positive on the left-flank and came out with two assists and a share of the maximum bonus. With Henrikh Mkhitaryan used from the bench once again, if Paul Pogba’s raids are curtailed by a role in the double pivot, Martial could yet be the most attractive of the United midfield.

Antonio Valencia
Once again the Ecuadorian offered far more going forward than Luke Shaw on the opposite flank, confirming that he is our favoured route into the United backline. Eric Bailly was impressive but Valencia’s quality going forward is enough to keep him firmly in place at the top of of Watchlist, despite United’s failure to earn a shut-out.

In Decline

Roberto Firmino
Let’s not panic. However, there’s no doubt that the performances of Coutinho and Mane took a nibble out of our confidence in Firmino. It’s possible that we have to live with every Liverpool midfield asset taking turns to come to the fore. However, if Klopp’s side win at Burnley in Gameweek 2, Firmino really needs to get amongst the points to restore our faith.

The Arsenal Defence
The injury troubles were well publicised and we expected today’s encounter to test Arsenal’s resolve. However, the nature of the Liverpool performance indicated that it could take several weeks for Arsene Wenger to restore stability. Hector Bellerin at 6.5 and with 30% ownership already looks a liability.

Alberto Moreno
If it wasn’t clear that James Milner was Klopp’s first choice at left-back heading into today’s game, Moreno’s performance at Arsenal fixed that. The Spaniard’s desperate lunge on Theo Walcott went unpunished when the penalty was saved but, just a minute later, Moreno was exposed for Arsenal’s opener. He is surely destined for cameo roles this season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Could do with some advice for GW2 (Not a RMT). First 11 picked, I think - just not sure on who to Capt. Thinking of sticking with big Serg...

    Foster (Jaku)

Stones / Valencia / Amat (Friend, Pieters)
Hazard / Firmino / Eriksen / Redmond (Capoue)
    Aguero / Gray / Vardy

Also, saved my FT from GW1. Ibra is very tempting (ownership) but I am going to wait and see for now.

Same problem making me want Ibra a lot.

Between Aguero and Hazard. Gray/Firmino/Vardy/Eriksen all viable punts also.

      I'm on Hazard atm

That's the team I'd go with too. It will be interesting to see how Vardy and Gray shape up. Obviously, Ibra is a risk to you with such a high ownnership.

Ibra: I appreciate he scored, but how many touches did he have in the box? IIRC you could count them on one finger

Lol. Touches in the box don't really matter when the person scores, lol.

Would it have been better if he had 6 touches in the box and didn't score?

Some of the comments here are awesome! Lol.

He was in my first drafts this summer, but after seeing Swansea sell Ayew and Williams I didnt have any faith in them. For a 5m player I think he will do ok, but after their Hull game their fixtures are absolutely awful, so I will defo stay away. Watchlist him and take a look when their fixtures look brighter

He didn't have a great season last season and never looked settled.

However, I watched him often in his past seasons and he is a player that gets involved and can score goals.

I actually considered him in my team at one point but went with the cheaper Capoue.

If Fer is finally settled now, I can assure you he will get attacking returns and be a bargain at 5mil but I'd put him on the watchlist until we know if he's nailed on.

A lot of panicking on here. I don't think using your wildcard is necessary, it's far too early to judge players who've had one good game but have been notorious in the past for persistent trolling, e.g. Coutinho

Knees do be jerking all over the shop at the moment.
Trick is to pick the players who'll keep up their form.
Coutinho may well keep it up, he's a fantastic player and very explosive, but he's also very inconsistent in terms of fantasy returns, so I'm sticking with Mane for now.

Hull played well on Saturday but Villa won the first game too, may consider them if they continue this form and strengthen the squad, but there's no way they'll compete putting 3 on the bench each week.

Gradel came on late and was very impressive. Might be getting eased back in after his serious injury last season, but don't think he'll be coming off the bench soon. He could definitely be this season's Mahrez.

Wilson in a similar position in that he also is coming back from injury, but he did fairly well in the first half than looked to tire in the second. He was up against the best defense in the league so hard to expect much from him this 1 match.

    2) Is both Tadic and Redmond overkill

Seems okay to me, but Deulofeu has pretty banging fixtures. Then again, so does Ramirez.

I gave my cousin a LOT of advice on his team. Before I looked at it, he had Kante in there, to name but one player.
After GW1 he's ranked in the top 1k.
I am bitter as hell right now.

I didn't do too terribly. About 315k. Still have Courtois left to play as well so a Chelsea clean sheet would make me a lot happier.

He does have Capoue on his bench, as I'm sure lot of people on here do, so that helps.

I have Firmino and he has Coutinho... he also had Firmino before, but downgraded to fit in Ibra ahead of Kane - WHAT. A. MOVE.

Adding insult to injury is I'm an Arsenal fan (as well as Forest), and he supports Liverpool... so whilst his real life team is getting one over on mine, his player is also scoring the goals whilst mine does nothing. How the hell Liverpool managed to score 4 goals without their centre forward getting a single return is absolutely baffling and infuriating.

He didn't tinked after your initial suggestions of Martial, Lamela, Ibra, Aguero and advising him to have Capoue(and he probably played him) and have WBA defense(and he probably tripled it).

I had the worst weekend ever and need advice.
All of my team is fine. The just didn't score (Firmino; Tadic; Double United def etc....)
I really want to hold off on transfers until after week 2 when I can make 2.
The big elephant in the room is Nolito.
    Should I stick or twist?

Nolito looked threatening cutting inside and taking shots. Actually the best Man City asset after Sergio IMO.

Reckon I could get away with not transferring Redmond in this week? Want him at 6.0m for the home game at Sunderland but if he rises to 6.1m things could become complicated.

    Evaluation of my team:
    Valdez Rubbish
Jaku Ok but in a poor team playing against an awful one.
Stones Bought due to team and price and still rubbish
Amat Not convinced about Swans at all and he is probably temporary.
Bailly A good pick but Valecia a better one,
    Azpi Don't Know yet
McCauley good so far and a safe 4.5.
Mahrez I think his head is turned and lucky he got a pen for points.
Del Boy I should know better as an Everton fan.
Lecko Gamble as a 4.5 cover and went wrong.
    Tadic Jury still out.
    Oscar Don't know yet
Ibra rooney the same at 2.5 mil less.
Kun Not impressed at the price.
    Gray early days.

The above shows I am not too impressed with my opening gambit but I would not really know how to use a WC either at this point.
    Anyone else feel the same?

A little bit of a pessimistic view of your team. It's 1 week! Looks like your talking yourself into Wild carding.

I looked into wild carding but changing 4 players isn't worth it for me.

Only way to use a wildcard is to keen jerk the scorers from the weekend. But do people really think Negredo, Cout and Lamela are going to score every week? Pure madness!

Man City will keep clean sheets, but obviously when Kompany is back Stones is out.
Valencia seems a real bargain at 5.5m but the transfer would be sideways.
I'm not so sure about West Brom.
Hard to know with Leiscester, didn't look the same team. Team will sit back to counter their fast break.
      Deulofeu looked really sharp.
Tadic should have got an assist only for Long's missed header.
      Rooney won't outscore Ibra.
Kun will pay dividends as he usually does.
Gray/Long/Negredo/Wilson/Carroll is the toughest decision so far.
