The Stock Check – Gameweek 1 – Monday

Chelsea’s stars of 2014/15 rise to the occasion at Stamford Bridge as both Diego Costa and Eden Hazard deliver goals to earn Antonio Conte a victory in his first Premier League outing. Here’s the final Stock Check of Gameweek 1.

On the Rise

Eden Hazard
The Belgian’s spot-kick was hugely significant, not least because it saw Hazard deliver in Gameweek 1, but also because it appears to confirm him as Chelsea’s designated penalty taker. That’s something of a puzzle given that Oscar took one in pre-season with Hazard on the pitch. Now with penalties secured, Hazard’s stock, like that of Riyad Mahrez, has enjoyed a major boost.

Diego Costa
Owned by just 7% of FPL managers, Costa’s fine winning strike rolled us back to the 2014/15 campaign and offered a reminder of his clinical finishing ability. His future at Chelsea is far from assured but if he can hint at returning to his debut season strike rate, he may yet enter our thinking. However, an early booking and a reckless challenge on Adrian also demonstrated just why we have to show extreme caution.

Cesar Azpilicueta
The Spanish full-back has significantly improved his attacking game and is now offering just as much from the left as Branislav Ivanovic on the right. Unlike the Serb, Azpilicueta’s starting role has rarely come under question and with no rival for his position, he continues to stand out as the key option in Antonio Conte’s defence. Tonight’s assist and bonus only underlined that further.

James Collins
Slaven Bilic opted for the Welsh warhorse over Angelo Ogbonna, potentially unlocking a 4.5 option in West Ham’s backline. That already brought Collins to our attention, even before his dramatic blast from a West Ham corner. A start against AFC Bournemouth should be guaranteed but it remains if he can hold off Ogbonna in the long-term.

In Decline

Andre Ayew
The Ghanaian’s West Ham bow lasted just 34 minutes before he gave way with a thigh problem. That was a blow to his 9.5% ownership who must now wait anxiously to see if he can recover for Sunday’s potentially profitable meeting with the Bournemouth defence. With Payet a likely starter, Bilic won’t need to take a risk with his new signing.

Michail Antonio
Charged with containing Hazard, he was always in for a testing evening. Seemingly consigned to a right-back role with Bilic collecting options on the flanks, Antonio was hooked shortly after conceding the early second-half penalty. His start against AFC Bournemouth could be in doubt – his fragility against top class opponents certainly isn’t, nor is his reluctance to continue as a full-back.

Sofiane Feghouli
The 5.5 midfield option is another in the West Ham treatment room. He missed tonight’s encounter with a hamstring problem which materialised in training according to Bilic.

Oscar
We thought he was on spot-kicks, clearly he is not. That’s a major dent to his appeal and with Cesc Fabregas breathing down his neck, the Brazilian’s owners will rarely be able to rest easy.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Any of these sound good?

    a) Gray to Negredo/Rondon
    b) Siggy to Lamela
    c) Morgan to Amat

In case you missed the discussion a couple of pages back, FPL have removed the data view tab from the transfer page. They now have list view, but crucially this just shows the sell price, not the price you paid. This makes it more difficult to calculate if you will gain or lose 0.1 from a price change.

***My tip: When you buy a player, take a screenshot showing the price paid and file it away for reference.***

I'm not sure what happens if you login to FFF with your password as I have always logged in with my FPL ID, but I sometimes have to correct the price I paid for some players (particularly if they were bought close to the price change time) so that might not be a foolproof solution.

I'm not sure what that page will show yet as I haven't made a transfer! From memory I don't think it showed the price, just the date and you then had to cross reference with the records of the price change prediction sites to work out if you bought before or after a price change.

FPL have a history of bringing out under-developed/incomplete and frankly awful "updated" versions of the game.

Eventually oversights like this get ironed out and phased back in. They will also bring back "detailed stats" again when they realise how useful it is.

One day they'll employ someone that has actually played the game to design an update.

Thinking of getting Williams. I picked him because he had a great fixture every 2nd match. But without Kante they don't look the same defensively.

Was also considering this, picked Morgan as a Williams filler initially, but considering on doubling a WBA defender with Foster now.

      asking myself the same question...
Most popular pick is Morgan > Williams I believe
Holding for next home games looks key and saving an FT...
What other alternatives at 5.0M can we look at except williams ?

Assuming you already have Stones, not many. Think the best option if youre not looking at Williams is is downgrade and spend elsewhere.

Im going to play Redmond/Valencia just in case some of those GREAT Valencia passes find it's way to the net. Yes, i can have 2x2pointers but
      a. Valencia played almost OOP, with Pogba on the field I recall even more right flank runs.
      b. Redmond can score something as he can use that space that Valencia leaves with cheeky counter attack.

      Give the lad a chance!

First game against a tough WH side, what did you expect? A brace? Lol.

The most important thing to take from that match is that he looks first choice in Conte's system and he was involved in attack without getting the returns.

CHE now have great fixtures so dumping him now would be crazy.

Stick with him as he's still a bargain in a top side and is capable of explosive points.

I am more than willing to let any player have a chance, however the reason for gambling on Oscar was primarily due to pens. Obviously I'm aware he is significantly cheaper than hazard so you get what you pay for. But I worry that if I don't get hazard in over Oscar asap then I'm getting to fall behind.

I get what your saying and I'm too a little worried about not having Hazard, but I think you only can really full behind if he becomes the consistent captain option every gw and you have no other players to counter that risk.

I currently have 4 good captain options so at this stage I'm not panicking about Hazard, however I will start turning the wheels to get him in over the next 3-4 gws if he really explodes. At this stage one game and a pen is not a big enough sample to make any conclusions from, very similar to Mahrez who I currently own.

Just so you know, Hazard said in the post match interview that he took the pen because it was "his turn". Hard to know what that means and if it alludes to the fact that he and Oscar might be taking turns.

If so I think it increases Oscars appeal and slightly decreases Hazard's, as he was very relient on pens during his best seasons previously. In saying that Hazard is coming into his peak so could perhaps start scoring more goals from open play.

I think at this stage it's still a wait and see, and not make any definitive conclusions from one match. 😉

    Hazard Mahrez Deulofeu Redmond

Morgan to Williams could work well as you can then play him over Shaw if you fancy Redmond attacking points at OT. Williams also has excellent fixtures ahead.

Otherwise you can bank it and check first to see how Williams performs and bring him in the following gw as your team is solid the way it is.

Concern that their teams will lose too much ground in their mini leagues coupled with Team Value. Best bet is to not panic. It has only been 1 game week. Think of the reasons why you picked the players you have in the first place

        3. devils advocate
          • 9 Years
          7 years, 8 months ago

It's a tactic to build team value.

As there's no real other use for the first WC, some players will use the international break to activate it as by then we can see who the bandwagons are, and if they are rising in price quickly you can bring them in and out of your team over the break and build or bank the team value or left over funds.

The tactic can work well if there's obvious bandwagons however last season it didn't really work too well because the price rises were quite slow, hence there weren't many multiple price rises over the international break.

It's a bit hit or miss.

Another reason for wc'ing would be if you started with a lot of punts that didn't play and you need multiple transfers to fix your team. Less common if you did your research before the season.

I don't think I've ever been happier with a 56 point week. Think it's just the relief that perhaps this season won't be as bad as the last where I started on 25~ points.

If you picked your team for GW1 only, then go ahead.

But most don't. GW2 is a new week. Hold your nerve.

          • devils advocate
            • 9 Years
            7 years, 8 months ago

Last season I started playing in gw2 and finished a respectable 64k in the OR, and I took a heap of transfer hits and killed my TC chip by using it on Carroll for the final double gw.

Just goes to show gw1 means very little as there will currently be thousands of players sitting on the same total points right now.

It's not uncommon for 1 good gw to rocket you up the rankings by hundreds of thousands.

Stay calm, and if you think you made the right team choices but your players just had a bad gw, then back your decisions for gw2.;)

My team for the next round (no transfers so far):

          Foster
          Valencia - Friend - Stones
          Tadic - Firmino - Alli - Mahrez
          Negredo - Ibrahimovic - Gray

Bench: Heaton, Townsend, Dann, van Dijk

Thinking about going a doubble transfer "Tadic -> Redmond" and "Firmino/Alli -> Hazard" if Chelsea/Hazard continues to impress next round, and of course depending a bit on the whole Tadic/Redmond situation and if either Alli or Firmino seems to be the way to go for their teams midfield. Any other viable options that anyone can spot?

Yes, the earlier stats looks of course good, and he looked fresh during pre-season. I even had him as a captain above both Mahrez and Ibra in the first round... (unfortunatly for me...)

Was uncertain about Hazard, but really would like to fit him in after he looked great in the first game though, and Redmond seems to be a very decent and cheaper option to Tadic (going to keep my team for one more round of course). This combined with me being a bit uncertain about Firmino and Alli (next round would hopefully give me a bit more information).

I got hit by the Ayew injury last night. I bought him for the home game vs Bournemouth. That's FPL bringing you back to earth when you think you are ready to score big.

Let's be positive. I will take it as an opportunity to buy form players from GW1.

            Option 1/
            Ayew -> Barkley
            + Straight swap
            + Form player
            + Great fixtures
+ On FKs and maybe on pens

            Option 2/ Ayew + Puncheon -> Lamela + Redmond (-4)
+ Get two form players who could offer incredible value
            - I already have Tadic
            - Lamela could get rotated if Janssen gets in the team

            Option 3/ Ayew + Puncheon -> Coutinho + Fer (-4)
+ get Coutinho before he is at 8.5m
            - liverpool's fixtures
