The Digest – Gameweek 2

We draw the curtain on Gameweek 2 in suitable fashion, by collecting our thoughts on the player, the team and the key talking point.

The Player

There really is no contest.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has already taken the Premier League by storm, muscling his way past shell-shocked centre backs and into our Fantasy line-ups.

Hands up, I was initially fooled by his languid style and ageing legs. I doubted he could immediately click in a Manchester United side that almost had to learn how to attack with purpose again after Louis van Gaal’s laboured tenancy.

But Zlatan has let the goals do the talking, which is just fine when you have Paul Pogba doing the rest.

As I’ve already mentioned on these pages, it is Pogba’s performance and the way in which he transformed the United machine that convinced me to shed my doubts on the Swede.

It’s difficult to see United failing to control and dominate the majority of teams with Pogba stationed in the double pivot. His energy will surely be the spark to drive United forward and, in doing so, ensure that Ibrahimovic is readily supplied with opportunities in the box.

He’s already proven just how deadly he can be with service and with spot-kicks now thought to be assured, Ibrahimovic is just too intoxicating to ignore.

The Team

Having given Hull City their moment in the sun in Gameweek 1, Mike Phelan’s side soaked it up, offering up another nomination a week later after an impressive win at Swansea City.

But instead we will turn to another promoted side.

Burnley battled against improbable odds to conjure a victory against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, offering us another reminder that, early in the season, there is often reliable value amongst the new arrivals from the Championship.

Sean Dyche’s side have been here before; they could, and perhaps should have survived in 2014/15.

The Clarets boss now knows exactly how to approach games like the Liverpool encounter: shelve ambition, strangle the centre of the pitch and break with speed and purpose.

It was a policy employed even in the Championship at times, as Dyche exploited Sam Vokes’ physicality alongside the pace and clinical finishing of Andre Gray.

Both opened their accounts on Saturday. Both will look to reach double figures and provide strong FPL value.

Then, in goal, there is Tom Heaton.

Already ranked as the top keeper, the Burnley skipper looks to be a gift. A goalkeeper who will churn out regular save points, behind ten players who, at times, will be drilled to contain opponents in order to earn a result at all costs.

The Talking Point

We have to return to Ibrahimovic.

There’s no doubt we have to acknowledge the excitement he has already brought to our season but, at the same time, we should also take time to consider how, together with Sergio Aguero, he’s already forced our hand.

It seems we have little choice but to plump for the Manchester pairing in our attacks.

In doing so, we’re taking debilitating chunks out of our budget and restricting, if not killing, our ability to react when midfield heavy-hitters start delivering.

Should Alexis Sanchez, Kevin de Bruyne and Dimitri Payet hit the heights again, many of us will be hamstrung and unable to exploit their form.

That is, unless we dare to rid ourselves of Ibrahimovic or Aguero. That seems unlikely.

Those chasing gaps, or even those who refuse to bend to the template attack, at least have a hope on the horizon. The heavy-hitting midfielders will eventually become effective differentials.

Two Gameweeks down and it’s difficult to see any asset competing with the output of Aguero and Ibrahimovic. Right now our only worry is deciding which of the two strikers earns the armband.

It’s up to the likes of Sanchez, De Bruyne and Payet to see if they can burden us with any further concerns.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

It's a loan with an option to buy.
Remy is 6.4, might be a better look than Benteke if true.

Morning folks. Any help greatly appreciated

Another Ibracadabra price rise is not making me happy currently team looks like this:

    Cech (Jaku)

    Baines. Pva. Dawson (Amat. Smith)

    Redmond. Oscar. Friminho. Shaq. Mahrez

    Aguero. Rooney. (Wilson)

I know there's a few flaws already take as read that I'm going to persist with shaq and frim.

I have 2 free transfers and 0.5 itb.

Thinking of mahrez and Rooney to Ibra and bolasie ( after Ibra I'm now left with 7.3 for my mid and it has to be mahrez as he's the only place I have the cash)

Any thoughts either alternatives to bolasie. Or even keep Rooney over Ibra?

    Much appreciated!

If you are getting out mahrez is do mahrez to lamela and Rooney to ibra. Teams got a few other issues like Oscar. Might be tempted to hold mahrez and downgrade Oscar/shaq to capoue to go roon to ib

    Talking to myself out loud.
Ibra and Kun sensible but we all know what it does to the rest of the squad. As one can only captain one and say one does away with Ibra, what are the likely results.
Kun Captain all the time> No problem.
Losing 3 points per week on average not having Ibra> ouch
Getting upgrades all over the team like Payet Mahrez Ozil Sanchez, Heavy hitting Wing Backs etc will result in more than 3 points per week> Good.
Is it really that bad only having one of Kun Ibra that bad in the long run?

I personally feel that it's about getting as many good players as you can in your team, Kun, Ibra, Hazard, etc. I had to downgrade my defense to accommodate both of them, but at least there are a few good 4.5 options and even those priced at 4.0 that actually start.

      1. Eze Really?

Agreed, just find it difficult to splash out on a 6.0 defender who could easily lose CS points at any time of the game. My strategy for now is to focus on my front 8 and as the season goes on, find the right balance. Thinking of bringing in Williams for one of my 4.5 defenders as I already have Stones and Valencia, will monitor his progress.

Really we are only talking about the extra 2 mill for Ibra over Lukaku/Kane/Vardy/Costa/Giroud to get Ibra

You can only play 11 players and 1 cheap mid, 2 cheap defenders and a budget (but scoring) striker/mid allows for Ibra and much of the above.

I think Ibra will average 4 - 5 points a game and not sure you will get more than that with an extra heaving hitter midfield over and above Gylfi, Cout, Barkley, Lamela, Carzola, Sterling, Ramsey, Oscar, Arnaut, Tadic, Townsend, Bolaise as your third and even fourth mids.

It all comes down how you use the extra £2 mill in tandem with Ibra imv

Btw Ibra and Kun are averaging 10 a game in very strong teams - can you risk the downside 😉

Yea I haven't found the right chance to get Ibra in and feels too early to WC but it feels like praying for Kun to outscore / Ibra so contract a foot disease every week is a bad strategy.
Like you say I have afforded Azpul, Hazard, Rodwell and Lamela to try claw back the points but I think my biggest problem so far was not choosing the right budget options.

What's the statute of limitations on a tweet?

4 years seems like a long time when the legal limit for libel is 1 year and for physical injury is 3 years...

It sets a hell of a precedent to get rival fans trawling through the Twitter accounts of players who've only just entered the public eye. Maybe clubs will start taking a more proactive approach to this themselves.

I guess it's seen as an historic offensive series of homophobic & sexist tweets and he is and was then part of the FA "family" so he must answer the charges. Modest punishment as long as he expresses deep regret and changed behaviour - grown up etc.

Careful guys. You're coming awfully close to suggesting that what he said wasn't that bad. Which it was, it was horrific. If you need convincing of that read the tweets again. It definitely warrants some form of punishment. While they are four year old tweets, that's four years he has had to take them down, but chosen not to. That might consistute poor judgment rather than actual overt homophobia on his part, but the reality is if you're going to write things like that in the first place you have to face the punishment when the time comes. There's no place for it in the game or in society as a whole.

      1. DanwiseTheBrave
        • 12 Years
        7 years, 8 months ago

I agree entirely, the point is a legal one though. There exists a statute of limitations on most offences, as I said in the UK it's 1 year for libel, and 3 years for actual injury. I agree that the tweets are unacceptable as is the entire thought process but these legal limits exist for a reason and while i know this is an internal FA matter it sets a dangerous precedent.

        1. Malachy

Sorry to pull this card - but I'm actually a litigation solicitor. As it's an internal disciplinary process it will 100% depend on what is in the code of conduct or regulations he's been punished under. Civil limitation periods are irrelevant. If someone was suing him for damages it might be a different story. He is running very close to a few criminal sanctions that have longer limitation periods, although neither the police not twitter have anything close to the resources they need to deal with that type of offending.

And I disagree that it sets a dangerous precedent. Quite the opposite - I think it sets an excellent precedent. Zero tolerance for hate speech (which this very, very clearly is). Football appeals to a very young, impressionable audience. It's important that the stance taken on issues like this is clear and totally uncompromising.

I know I know, I don't have Ibrahimovic. But here's my squad taking a punt on Lukaku and a big punt on Tekkers and hoping for a turnaround from Alli. FYI Spurs, Palace and Everton have a pretty tasty run coming up. Pogba just seems like good value so in he goes. This will probably fail miserably but I'm going to try to persevere without the 2 x heavy hitters up front. Even if Ibra & Aguero keep averaging 1.5 goals a game I reckon you can get that back in the midfield... right? Hahaha who knows. Hit me!

    Foster - Jakupovic
    Valencia - Stones - Walker - Friend - Amat
    Hazard - Alli - Pogba - Redmond - Fletcher
    Aguero - Lukaku - Benteke

Go for it as a differential and it may turn out to be a genius move .... but downgrading (the low Baps) Stones for a 4.5 def and downgrading (the rotation risked) Alli for a 6.5 mill mid would give you Ibra 🙂 without arguably weakening your team - but you may have missed the boat with price rises ?

Will Townsend drop in price before the deadline? Fplstatistics says about -70 % now.

Already did my FT, and not too keen on taking a hit. Also, I already "suffered" the drop in Tadic, and want to keep as much value as possible.

Got the temptation to wildcard now. Used my 2FTs to get Ibra in on Friday.

Now urging to push Firmino and Gray out - really not sure what to do.

Well that's the same team as me apart from shaw over Val and Ramirez over capoue. Solid and firminho should come good. Nothing worse than transferring out and then him scoring at the weekend which is a real possibility. My only concern is that he got ice packed after the game last night so hope he's not nursing an injury

    Thoughts on this team?
All 11 starters have favourable fixtures GW3 and GW4 imo

    Foster / (Jaku)
    Ivanovich / Valencia / Williams / (Collins / Amat)
    Hazard / Barkley / Lamela / Redmond / (Capoue)
    Aguero / Ibra / Rondon

Plan is to get Ozil as soon as he shows his form. Ivan to 4.5 or Rondon to Diomande to fund that move.

Morning all, how's this looking for this week? Poor start as I just drafted in Ibra this week (sold Sanchez to Redmond to fund)

Need to WC or OK for this week?

    Foster
    Stones Targett Friend
    Hazard Firmino Redmond Capoue
    Ibra Aguero Kane

    Jaku Amat Hojberg Kone

Already 50 points behind in my mini league so I'm tempted to WC in some differentials. Early days though...

After a horrible start I'm probably going to wildcard after the International break to sort things out. I have two free transfers this week but zero in the bank. Thinking of having a punt based upon the fixtures. Thoughts on:

    Fabregas for Firmino
    &
    Benteke for Gray

    (A) Firmino --> Tadic (Avoid price drop of Firmino - better underlying stats than Redmond)
    (B) Firmino --> Redmond (Avoid price drop of Firmino - free up funds for other players)
    (C) Gray --> Long (Southamptom coverage - risk of being dropped because of tweets)
