Moving Target

Moving Target – Loic Remy

Having already acquired Christian Benteke in this transfer window, Crystal Palace further bolstered their striking options with the signing of Chelsea forward Loic Remy on a season-long loan.

The 29-year-old will once again link up with his former manager at Newcastle Alan Pardew, and speaking to the club’s official website, the Palace boss expressed his delight at being able to secure the Frenchman’s services:

“Loic has been a target of mine throughout this transfer window and I’m delighted the deal has been done. I brought him to Newcastle so I know what he is capable of and I am convinced he will be a quality addition to our squad as we evolve. Loic has international and Champions League experience as well as being a Premier League title winner and is the latest example of the high calibre of players we have brought into the club during this transfer window.”

The History

Remy joined Lyon’s youth academy at the age of 12, and progressed all the way to the first-team, making his professional debut against Saint Etienne in October 2006.

With Remy struggling for first-team action at Lyon, he joined Lens on loan in January 2008, producing four goals and two assists in 12 appearances before moving to Nice in the summer of 2008.

Over the next two seasons, Remy thrived as a regular starter, scoring 30 goals and bagging eight assists in 75 appearances in all competitions. He was linked with a move to Stoke, but ended up joining Marseille in August 2010 for a fee of around €15 million.

His two-and-a-half-year spell with the French giants continued to see Remy flourish as one of the leading strikers in Ligue 1, racking up 42 goals and 13 assists in 111 outings for the club.

He was on the move again in January 2013, signing for QPR for around £8 million. He was unable to prevent the club being relegated to the Championship, but did score six goals in 14 Premier League matches.

Remy moved to Newcastle on loan in 2013/14, and continued to impress in the Premier League, scoring 14 goals and grabbing three assists in just 26 matches.

Those performances convinced Chelsea to sign the striker in August 2014, but Remy has struggled for first-team action over the last two seasons, only managing 47 appearances in all competitions, totalling 12 goals and three assists.

Having scored five goals in 15 matches at Under 20 and Under 21 levels, Remy was afforded a senior debut for France in a 1-0 defeat to Nigeria in June 2009. He has made 31 appearances for his country, scoring seven goals.

The Prospects

While club-record Benteke looks set to be the centrepiece of the Palace attack this season, it was clear Pardew needed to add further goals to his side.

The Eagles scored just 39 times last season, ranking them as the joint-third lowest scorers, and have netted only once in the first three Gameweeks.

Pardew interestingly switched from his usual 4-2-3-1 formation to a 4-4-2 on Benteke’s league debut against Bournemouth on Saturday, with the Belgian playing alongside Connor Wickham in attack. Should Pardew look to favour the latter system, Remy could compliment Benteke perfectly, with the France international’s pace and dynamism in contrast to Benteke’s strength, aerial ability and hold up play.

Remy is a versatile attacker, though, capable of also playing wide on the right, whereas the former Liverpool striker is an out-and-out target man. Should Pardew use the Frenchman on the right wing, Andros Townsend could have some competition for his place, or he may shift over to the left wing, leaving Wilfried Zaha’s spot in doubt.

Certainly, if Pardew keep faith in the 4-4-2, we could see the Eagles putting a lot more crosses into the box, as they did last Saturday, which could boost the assist potential of Townsend and Jason Puncheon.

Priced at 6.4 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Remy could provide excellent value should he be able to secure a regular starting berth, although having had little football over the past few months, it could take him some time to regain full match sharpness.

Coming in at just 1.0 more, Benteke is currently our favoured attacking asset at Selhurst Park, particularly after he revealed he’s determined to take penalty duties off Yohan Cabaye, after the midfielder missed his second successive spot-kick in the 1-1 draw with Bournemouth. The former Newcastle player could also be set for a spell on the sidelines after picking up a groin injury whilst on international duty.

Palace’s fixtures in the short-term (mid, STO, sun) are pretty favourable, but with Pardew’s side struggling for form, and both Benteke and Remy short of match fitness, there are no guarantees either player will hit the ground running at their new club. Pardew’s decision to hand Benteke 90 minutes last weekend, though, was an indication that he’s desperate for the new boys to make an impact.

Certainly, Remy’s history under Pardew offers encouragement that the Palace boss can once again get the best out of him. Whether he can better Benteke as a Fantasy prospect remains to be seen.

Chances of Valdes and Friend back for Middlesbrough next weekend?

Unsure of which 4.5 defensive and goalkeeping options to go with in my WCT. Currently have:

    Valdes Pickford
    Valencia Stones Evans Friend Amat

    Any suggestions? Ta.

Foster and Heaton seem to be the most popular of goalkeepers around the 4.5 mark. Defenders at 4.5 is a more tricky one though. In my team I have Adam Smith because of potential attacking returns, but there is also Souare (who has good fixtures), Gibson (collected 3 bonus points in Borough's only clean sheet so far), Lowton (who collected a bonus point in Burnley's win against Liverpool and is also a full back so has potential attacking returns), and Pieters (stoke have good fixtures coming up). Lots of decent options

i really like Snodgrass, he's my favorite on the list (providing his injury is cleared), but i won't be getting
him until gw 8 when his fixtures turn awesome.

also monitoring Januzaj, hoping he shows something.

Redmond (6.1) seems to offer great oop value as a striker. but his returns have not been as hoped and
      fixtures are tough.

Capoue offers far better value than Pereyra, i think. Pereyra could also be interesting, i'm watching him.

I have A, but I'd like to get Sterling, so not sure to be honest.

I'd say A just for Sanchez being way more explosive in terms of goals/assists than Özil. Not totally sold on Lamela but for the price I'd say he's a decent player that probably will have the points ticking. The best option would however be Sanchez/Sterling, IMHO.

    How's this plan?

    Foster (Pickford)
    Valencia Williams Evans (Amat 4m)
    Haz Ozil Sterling Firmino (Capoue)
    Ibra Lukaku Tekkers

Kaku + Sterling -> Kun + 4.5m (and play Capoue as 4th mid. Can't see anyone else below 6m that appeals enough for me to weaken rest of mid)

If you're picking Amat as your 4th defender, are you sure he's nailed? Chance Mawson could take his place. Can't see Sunderland spending up to £5m on a benchwarmer?

From what I understand from a few Swansea fans and people that have watched them is that Amat has been the better of the two CBs so far, so Fernandez could potentially get dropped instead. But as you say, no guarantee that either are nailed at the moment

sup ffs...been so confused whether to play WC or not? so appreciate some help..on a 4 point hit already

    Foster • Jaku
    Valencia • Stones • Pieters • Friend • Souare
    Hazard • Firmino • Redmond • Ozil • Capoue
    Ibra • Kaku • Gray

    Reasons to WC:
    - taken a -4 already to do kun/townsend 》 kaku/ozil
    - potentially another hit for gray if he is banned? alternatively bench for 1 week but will suffer price drop
    - Will potentially suffer drops for stones / pieters and maybe friend. Even if they dont drop by next gw, they will def drop the following gw if they dont perform in gw4

    Reasons not to WC:
    - even if i take another hit...i think a 8 point hit is only borderline WC. my general rule of thumb is WC if 12 point hit required
    - i can easily bench gray and play 4 defenders this gw
    - one of my reasons to WC is so i dont endure price drops in gray/stones/pieters/friend but a WC in a normal gw has better chance of increasing TV and i have already misssed out on a few price rises this gw
    - can WC to bring kun back but can easily WC now and take a hit to bring him back when fit

    Thoughts?

Very similar position for me. Think I'm going to bench Gray if he's banned then maybe Iheanacho punt next week if he plays v Man U before wildcarding

I have Stones, Pieters and Friend - and I'm not sure they're all nailed on to drop. And even if they do, they become very cheap enablers so I would say there's a fair chance they'll eventually rise in price again. If I was WCing I'd probably get rid but I don't think that having them right now is reason enough to WC.

suffered last reason with similar thinking by holding on to players (attackers tho) who dropped in price thinking that it will only take one increase (opposed to 2) for them to increase in price

I can understand that. But I had the same last year with Williams who slowly but surely dropped 0.2 - but never let it affect me as he was normally rotated by me, and I didn't really want to waste a transfer on someone who was very often a sub. As soon as the Swansea CS came back (and, to be fair, he scored) he was soon back up to 5.0 again. I think it's different with defenders as there prices aren't so volatile.

With such a busy transfer window and so many questions over lineups and form the best strategy IMO is wildcard GW 6-8 when Aguero is back and those questions have been answered. Max 4pt hit in the mean time if possible

I have the same issue. I'm not WCing, that can be used for Kun's return. But I'm as much confused as you are about benching Gray or taking a -8 hit to replace him (If he gets banned). In my case I have 0.6 itb, which makes me think about Gray->Defoe. How much do you have itb?

Hey, yeah looks like something I can live with. An extra 0.5m in next 2-3 weeks would be great.

might have to beef Abel up to a 6.5m and drop Val to a 5m def.

        Foster - Heaton
        Shaw - Williams - Friend - Pieters - Amat

Why should any WC team have one? It's Everton, and they cost 5 and 5.5.
If you expect Baines to get offensive points, however, I understand getting him, but Williams?

0.5 is worth so much at the moment with so many big hitters in midfield and upfront. Personally I prefer Williams, seems to be good at getting bonus, Baines has sort of lost his way a little over the past year as well

Williams seems better but Baines is so much more fun to watch
