The Pre-Match Preamble – Gameweek 4

Spiderman (or was it Spiderm4tt?) once said – “with great power comes great responsibility”.

That definitely chimes for any Fantasy Premier League manager with a Wildcard active.

The seemingly endless possibilities in front of us is dazzling and confusing but the burden is almost too much.

The gut wrenching feeling when a Wildcard is played and is perceived as “wasted” is an emotion that lingers in memory.

When it hits, we look for anything, any crumb of comfort that will help us justify decisions in order to ensure we leap a pit of despair.

Initially, the excitement and the sheer relief granted by the opportunity to refresh our squad mask these doubts.

It’s only now, hours before committing our decisions, that the doubts creep towards us. That we remember, with dread, how it feels when a Wildcard backfires.

In previous seasons I have likened it to a supermarket dash. That analogy still rings true.

You speed through, giggling at the choice and freedom you have been granted. Only to look back when the opportunity is gone and immediately begin to wonder what has been missed, what opening has been passed up.

For me, the pressure has been intensified. I’ll be sharing the fallout from my Wildcard with a bigger audience than ever. Revealing my errors and forcing myself to justify decisions and back-peddling.

Already that’s having an impact. I’m perhaps putting too much stock in bandwagons like Raheem Sterling – afraid that I’m missing the obvious, I’m backing these players for fear I’ll be exposed.

I’ve seen posts this morning questioning those still debating Wildcard decisions.

But I’m firmly in that camp.

Such is the power of the Wildcard, no decision can ever be finalised, even at this late stage.

We give ourselves the chance to deliberate every position right to the end. It stands to reason that we will keep doing that – we will keep replaying and rebalancing player vs player scenarios until the bell tolls.

It’s a tortuous process that absorbs us but one of the key pleasures of playing this game, particularly when we can share the agony on these pages.

I’ve enjoyed reading through the deliberation over the international break. I’m still reading now, adding your opinions to my own in order to finish this process once and for all.

There’s an expectation from myself and others that I’ll overcome my mediocre start to the season and a successful Wildcard is likely key to that.

My spider senses are tingling – I’m not sure I’m up to bearing all this responsibility.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Hm, looks very good. Would be comfortable getting Sanchez and I tend to spend as little as possible on GKs. Heaton or Foster will get enough saves/bonus points if you play them every week and swap one of them for a 4.0.

Sure you want to double up on WBA and not save the 0.5/0.6/0.7 on swapping Foster for a 4.0?

    Foster - Heaton

    Baines - Shaw - Souare - Friend - Amat

    Hazard - Firmino - Lamela - Redmond - Capoue

    Kun - Ibra - Gray

What are the priorities in trading out? Have 2FT. Will be retaining Kun ...

Hi AC - hm... Why would you retain Kun with 2FTs? You are not losing anything on price and 13m is a lot to be sitting on the bench. You could go for Kun -> Lukaku. If I had 2FTs I'd also do Redmond -> Ozil / Sanchez too but that's less urgent. The you can take a single hit or use WC to bring back Kun.

      1. ACmonster
        • 9 Years

Good point mate. Assuming Kun out, would prioritise getting in a gun midfielder (e.g. Redmond -> Ozil) over something like Souare -> Evans?

Yeah I reckon so. I already used my single FT and am still contemplating doing redmond -> Ozil for -4. Rumors here seem to be that Alexis starts on the bench. But gut feeling says don't take a hit so probably won't. Who are you captaining?

    CAPTAINCY DISCUSSION:

OK so I thought I would setup a captain discussion.

COSTA - He is a beast and has a great record against Swansea. Captaining someone away from home is always a risk.

HAZARD - Has great stats. The key chelsea player, but only at home. Away scoring in terms of a fantasy perspective is limited.

SANCHEZ - Has a home fixture and has just come off a great gameweek 3. Didn't return from Chile until Thursday and with Champions League midweek is a risk of limited minutes.

IBRAHIMOVIC - Scored a brace in his sole home game for Man United, clearly he takes his opportunities and didn't have an international game so will be fresh. Obviously playing Man City might be more testing and the game could be cagey.

I am leaning towards Ibrahimovic and Costa as guaranteed game time, with Ibrahimovic on fire and Costa having some form plus a great past history against Swansea.

Please get involved and add your thoughts.

    Thanks

Not sure if it is that simple.

Agree with Raz on the away issue - both in general and for Hazard. Costa has a stronger track record vs Swansea.

I don't have costa so am going with Ibra. Penalties, motivation, no international duties. And looked at some stats yesterday, Haz only scored more than one PL goal once over the last 2 years ( BOU last season) while Ibra has scored more than one league in 12 matches just last season. To avoid further headaches, I am assuming the french league is as good as the english defensively 😉
