The Digest – Gameweek 7

We take our final look back at Gameweek 7, recognising the hap-hazard achievements of Arsenal’s goalscoring defender, acknowledging the tempting resilience of the Spurs backline while pondering if it’s time to re-align our squad spending.

The Player

Some would say that Laurent Koscielny was fortunate to have been credited with Arsenal’s winner on Sunday.

A clumsy cack-handed finish saw the Frenchman bundle Theo Walcott’s flick into the Burnley net, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain appearing to wade in by kicking Koscielny’s calf.
A farcical but vital goal.

Arsenal claimed the points with Koscielny awarded the maximum Fantasy Premier League bonus points. It was enough to ensure that the Gunners’ man is the first defender to figure as a Gameweek leading scorer with 15-points.

As a result, he’s also one of the first defenders to sustain a transfer bandwagon of any real significance.

Ranking sixth in the “transfers in” column heading into Gameweek 8, Koscielny has risen to 6.2 in value as FPL managers begin to switch their sights to consider big-ticket defenders.

Arsene Wenger’s rearguard has demonstrated extra steel, with the introduction of Shkodran Mustafi cited as a key factor.

While the German has gained plaudits, it’s Koscielny that’s attracting the FPL attention courtesy of his two goals – already putting him halfway to his best Premier League goalscoring tally achieved last season.

The top scoring FPL defender, Koscielny’s 11% ownership is closing the gap on team-mate Hector Bellerin – the Spaniard still retained by 25.6% of FPL managers.

The fixture list suggests there is more to come from both.

With Swansea City, Middlesbrough and Sunderland looming, Koscielny and the Arsenal defence will be expected to boast further returns before bracing for stiffening fixtures with Manchester United and Spurs.

The Team

Across North London, Spurs have made a statement.

Their victory over a previously perfect Manchester City has suddenly thrown things open. It’s paved the way for Mauricio Pochettino’s men to promote their title challenging credentials while leaving the door ajar for Arsenal and Liverpool to close the gap.

Spurs proved City’s vulnerabilities – exposing their questionable defending and the fact that Kevin De Bruyne is an almost irreparable component of their midfield.

But this is not about City – Spurs clearly have plenty to offer us.

Heung-min Son’s form has already been highlighted on these pages – his newfound spark has attracted thousands of new investors, hungry to pounce on the latest mid-price talent.

We’ve also acknowledged the performances of Dele Alli – seemingly re-energised by Son’s recent displays. He’ll continue to play second fiddle to the South Korean for now, but could be a factor on Harry Kane’s return, with Pochettino perhaps shuffling his attacking setup.

But it’s the Spurs defence providing the new temptation.

Just as Koscielny’s haul ensured his popped his head above the parapet, the Spurs defence clocked up his fourth clean sheet in seven on Sunday to earn further investment.

Kyle Walker continues to be the headline act. Now found in 35% of FPL squads, his price rise and ownership is beginning to bring new options into the equation.

Danny Rose tops the Spurs ranks with 6.5 points per game following Sunday’s assist and yet has been claimed by just 5.3% of FPL managers.

Jan Vertonghen is earning attention by virtue of his 5.6 price tag, with the 6.5 Toby Alderweireld gradually shedding owners, presumably to Walker amongst others, in every Gameweek thus far.

But the Belgian is arguably the class act on show – he has an eye for goal that can justify his price tag and should he drop to 6.4, he could yet provide good value.

However, with four away trips in the next six, this is arguably not the time to seize on the potential offered by Pochettino’s rearguard.

Like Arsenal’s defence, the most opportune window may arrive at Christmas, when, despite the busy schedule, both north London clubs are treated to softening fixtures.

The Talking Point

So will December offer the perfect window to re-align our squad spending, or should we take the lead offered by Koscienly and the Spurs defence now?

Certainly, the Frenchman’s 15-point tally reminded us of the value that can be gleaned from big-hitting defenders. If you can absorb some frustrating two-point returns, the big scores can follow and, in the mid-term, justify the spend.

While midfielders arguably remain the main target for our funds, Koscielny now averages 7.0 points per appearance – only Sergio Aguero amongst the forwards can better that.

Crucially, the Arsenal man has offered 6.9 points per million; his nearest rival within the ranks of forwards – Jermain Defoe (5.3) – would not even place in the top ten defenders for value.

Aguero as a consistent captaincy option perhaps remains a mainstay. Alongside him, the form of Romelu Lukaku and Diego Costa is difficult to ignore.

But the third striker spot is under pressure. The option of deploying 3-5-2 or even 4-4-2 and investing that extra million in defence looks all the more compelling after the events of Gameweek 7.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Current team:

    Heaton Pickford
    Valencia Baines PVA Evans Amat
    Sanchez Firmino Antonio Snodgrass Capoue
    Aguero Lukaku Benteke

Assuming all goes well by next GW I have 2 free transfers and £1.4m saved, will most likely sort out the defence but toying with switching formation and playing 3-5-2:

    Bellerin/Mustafi Baines PVA
    Sanchez Firmino Antonio Walcott/Son Snodgrass
    Aguero Lukaku Diomonde

This formation change would most likely require a -8 to pull off but I'm liking the flexibility it has to offer. Would be looking to ship Benteke and Antonio after their upcoming meet so could potentially use both FTs to swap Valencia and Evans out and only take a -4 next GW? thoughts?

Don't play 3-5-2. So many decent mid bracket mids available means you can go with 3 good forwards.

But weighing up a £7m striker vs £7m midfielder seems to favour the latter, not a huge amount of mid priced strikers performing in comparison

3-5-2 always looks good, the team you have looks good too. I have never had it work yet though, always regretted it. Maybe this year is different, maybe not.

I'm just finding it difficult to be able to include Walcott/Sterling/Son without getting rid of Antonio, maybe I'm being too rash but it seems that this price range in midfield could well be worth switching formation for, you're always 2 transfers away from switching back anyway

I went with 3-5-2. Its just more reliable. Mids get 5 points when they score. Better value for money as well. Although i will say is that not having costa is worrying me.

          I have aguero and lukaku.

Does anyone know the latest on when Jack Butland will be back?

The Foster-Pickford combo has some terrible fixtures over the next few weeks and with Grant at 4.0, it could be an opportunity to save some cash.

Stoke tightening up and will continue to improve now fixtures are kinder.

According to Physioroom.com 5th November, which would give Grant 3 more GW's to play, possibly more if Butland's return takes any kind of setback.

      Go for it I reckon.

By the time Butland is back you'll have made use of the 0.7 and even then you can just play Pickford to avoid a hit.

If im going to get a arsenal defender, its either going yo be monreal or bellerin. Preferably bellerin. The amount of assists and baps these two get is really good. More consistent than relying on a goal from kos who has scored 2 this year.

I didnt think id say this but bellerin is worth the money. If u can afford it of course.

Mustafi looks like a great pick for obvious reasons; blocks, tackles, interceptions etc. But, he has an attraction to getting yellow cards.

At his time at Valencia this was his discipline record in La Liga:

    64 games
    21 yellow cards
    0 red cards

Early signs point towards him being a bap magnet.. + he was always a big goal threat at valencia and he's had more shots than Koscielny this season(both epl and ucl included) in fewer games. think he is gonna be the one to get in the arsenal defense

I have 2FT and no idea what to do :

    Heaton l Pickford
    PVA l Baines l Holebas l Evans l Amat
    Sterling l Firmino l Sanchez l Antonio l Capoue
    Aguero l Lukaku l Deeney

    What would you do?

Change Evans to a def with kinder fixtures and roll the other FT over?

There's plenty of possiblities there and he's certainly one of them.

If he's fit and keeps his elbows under control it's hard to look past Aguero.

Just reading The Digest ... Is anyone else thinking about realigning their team and spending money on premium Arsenal and Spurs defenders?

Imagine having Bellerin & Toby at the back... You'd be going into every game with a good chance of them scoring double figures... they're just so damn expensive...

    Hello,

Please may you RMT and provide advice on my WC team. Got some great advice earlier about benching issues but this is someing I think I can get over, but looking for more.
    GK: Lloris / Pickford
Def: Kos / Baines / Shawcross / Holebas / Amat
Mid: Sanchez / Walcott / Son / Chadli / Snodgrass
For: Aguero / Benteke / Deeney

Lloris & Holebas I'm not 100% so counter suggestions welcome.

My picks are what I see as long term apart from Son & Snodgrass who will probably morph to 9m / 4m when form/fixtures dictate.

    Thanks in advance.

Its a long time since Pulis & Huth ruled the Brittania and industrial defending was permitted. Stoke are not a clean sheet team in advance of their league position since then. I aslo dont get the Baines bandwagon either, that too looks like dog eared history.

For 5.5,5.0 range I think TOT,MUN,SOU offer better long term value.

Will you be benching Chadli for his tough fixtures?

I would downgrade him and do Benteke > Lukaku from GW9

Trying to decide whether to get rid of Shaw or Cazorla this week.

Benefit of dumping Cazorla is the extra cash I'd gain from Snodgrass whom I'd swap in. Benefit of Shaw out is he seems less likely to start. Have other defenders to make up 11 but they face Arsenal and Spurs this week.

    Thoughts?

Sell Caz. Taking up a valuable midspot where the points are this season.

Think Snodgrass is worth it? Can also do a straight swap for Son...

Both in the top 7 on the watchlist. Depends on how you use the money leftover if getting Snoddy. Plenty on here will have Son/Walcott and 3 more expensive mids so Snoddy is more a value choice for upgrades elsewhere.

Another player I've been mulling over is Jack Wilshere, anybody know if he's done much apart from hitting the post twice last game?

He's an injury risk and never completes 90mins. I'd avoid him tbh.

Who will score the most points next gw:
    A) Antonio (cry)
    B) Chadli (TOT)

Will Chadli have extra energy against the x-club?

I'd probably back Antonio...possibly playing up front again plus West Brom could be dominated by Spurs

Antonio to Walcott or son for free
Already have Alexis if that matters.
    Or just keep Antonio.

    B) Sterling + Wilson

Thinking it's time to let lukaku since i'm on WC and can shuffle my team around with the spare cash.
