Digest

The Digest – Gameweek 7

We take our final look back at Gameweek 7, recognising the hap-hazard achievements of Arsenal’s goalscoring defender, acknowledging the tempting resilience of the Spurs backline while pondering if it’s time to re-align our squad spending.

The Player

Some would say that Laurent Koscielny was fortunate to have been credited with Arsenal’s winner on Sunday.

A clumsy cack-handed finish saw the Frenchman bundle Theo Walcott’s flick into the Burnley net, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain appearing to wade in by kicking Koscielny’s calf.
A farcical but vital goal.

Arsenal claimed the points with Koscielny awarded the maximum Fantasy Premier League bonus points. It was enough to ensure that the Gunners’ man is the first defender to figure as a Gameweek leading scorer with 15-points.

As a result, he’s also one of the first defenders to sustain a transfer bandwagon of any real significance.

Ranking sixth in the “transfers in” column heading into Gameweek 8, Koscielny has risen to 6.2 in value as FPL managers begin to switch their sights to consider big-ticket defenders.

Arsene Wenger’s rearguard has demonstrated extra steel, with the introduction of Shkodran Mustafi cited as a key factor.

While the German has gained plaudits, it’s Koscielny that’s attracting the FPL attention courtesy of his two goals – already putting him halfway to his best Premier League goalscoring tally achieved last season.

The top scoring FPL defender, Koscielny’s 11% ownership is closing the gap on team-mate Hector Bellerin – the Spaniard still retained by 25.6% of FPL managers.

The fixture list suggests there is more to come from both.

With Swansea City, Middlesbrough and Sunderland looming, Koscielny and the Arsenal defence will be expected to boast further returns before bracing for stiffening fixtures with Manchester United and Spurs.

The Team

Across North London, Spurs have made a statement.

Their victory over a previously perfect Manchester City has suddenly thrown things open. It’s paved the way for Mauricio Pochettino’s men to promote their title challenging credentials while leaving the door ajar for Arsenal and Liverpool to close the gap.

Spurs proved City’s vulnerabilities – exposing their questionable defending and the fact that Kevin De Bruyne is an almost irreparable component of their midfield.

But this is not about City – Spurs clearly have plenty to offer us.

Heung-min Son’s form has already been highlighted on these pages – his newfound spark has attracted thousands of new investors, hungry to pounce on the latest mid-price talent.

We’ve also acknowledged the performances of Dele Alli – seemingly re-energised by Son’s recent displays. He’ll continue to play second fiddle to the South Korean for now, but could be a factor on Harry Kane’s return, with Pochettino perhaps shuffling his attacking setup.

But it’s the Spurs defence providing the new temptation.

Just as Koscielny’s haul ensured his popped his head above the parapet, the Spurs defence clocked up his fourth clean sheet in seven on Sunday to earn further investment.

Kyle Walker continues to be the headline act. Now found in 35% of FPL squads, his price rise and ownership is beginning to bring new options into the equation.

Danny Rose tops the Spurs ranks with 6.5 points per game following Sunday’s assist and yet has been claimed by just 5.3% of FPL managers.

Jan Vertonghen is earning attention by virtue of his 5.6 price tag, with the 6.5 Toby Alderweireld gradually shedding owners, presumably to Walker amongst others, in every Gameweek thus far.

But the Belgian is arguably the class act on show – he has an eye for goal that can justify his price tag and should he drop to 6.4, he could yet provide good value.

However, with four away trips in the next six, this is arguably not the time to seize on the potential offered by Pochettino’s rearguard.

Like Arsenal’s defence, the most opportune window may arrive at Christmas, when, despite the busy schedule, both north London clubs are treated to softening fixtures.

The Talking Point

So will December offer the perfect window to re-align our squad spending, or should we take the lead offered by Koscienly and the Spurs defence now?

Certainly, the Frenchman’s 15-point tally reminded us of the value that can be gleaned from big-hitting defenders. If you can absorb some frustrating two-point returns, the big scores can follow and, in the mid-term, justify the spend.

While midfielders arguably remain the main target for our funds, Koscielny now averages 7.0 points per appearance – only Sergio Aguero amongst the forwards can better that.

Crucially, the Arsenal man has offered 6.9 points per million; his nearest rival within the ranks of forwards – Jermain Defoe (5.3) – would not even place in the top ten defenders for value.

Aguero as a consistent captaincy option perhaps remains a mainstay. Alongside him, the form of Romelu Lukaku and Diego Costa is difficult to ignore.

But the third striker spot is under pressure. The option of deploying 3-5-2 or even 4-4-2 and investing that extra million in defence looks all the more compelling after the events of Gameweek 7.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Reckon he'd walk in to the team on one leg right now.

At this rate they'll be playing Bilic as CF, and inviting BigSam to play LB.

Which one is the better option?

    A)Vertonghen, Sterling, Austin

    B) Mustafi, Walcott, Wilson

I already own Sanchez & Aguero so it's a double up. ML leader owns Walcott but not Sterling. (A) leaves me with 0.0 ITB hence I could not get Wilson(6.4) and have to get Austin(6.3). This is purely for ML not OR as I'm playing GW19 cash out so things start to get a bit serious now 12 weeks left.

Would really appreciate your thoughts and some help to win me £! Thanks.

Rooney's name should be nowhere near Success nor King. Move him next to Capoo.

2,4,3 in Mids. 4,6,1 in Forwards.

@Ayew Serious....Amazing timing, I just logged on to do a controversial discussion.

Off topic as it's mainly regulars...and if the mods will allow....

I've just watched the programme on BBC1 about termination of pregnancies for children with Down Syndrome (I am a full time carer to my son with DS for those who don't know)
Earlier today I was writing in "The Guardian" newspaper on the subject under a piece that was previewing the programme and was shocked at some of the opinions people had on what it was like to be a parent of a child with DS...opinions by those who don't actually have one I might add.

Every single opinion seemed to say how awful and how hard it was for us (trying to justify why they agree with terminations)....but it just isn't true. I don't recognise the scenarios of woe and angst that they describe...quite the opposite.

I don't want any replies or opinions about terminations but what I would like to do is ask one simple question...and get an honest answer. Just so I know how folk perceive it.

"What do posters think it's like to be a parent of a child with DS...?"

Not stressful at all Ayew....quite the opposite. I worry far more about my other two sons than Joseph....much more to think about for "regular" kids...

I am sure it is a mixture of pain and pleasure. Dependent on the seriousness of their DS will depend on how much pleasure there is. However, there is pain and pleasure even from "normal kids". I have a 4 month old I really didnt want but he has made my life now, especially when he smiles back at me. Im not sure how i would have reacted if he had DS but i know i would have adored him regardless.

Interested to read your post Wakey. The direct answer to your question from my experience is that I haven't got a clue. Maybe this is due to a lack of public information regarding the subject or my own ignorance. I have 2 kids , one of 20 at uni and a lad of 17 in final year 6th form . Before they were born there was the option to all parents to be to have an amniocentesis which the majority took up. I may be completely wrong but I do think that it is impossible to answer your question without being in that particular situation..

Agreed Slouch...you have to have been in that position. My other two lads are 17 and 15 and the stress they present, and worries at times, is much harder than Joseph.

We don't worry about exams, girls, drugs, drinks, fights, college, Uni, blah, blah blah with Joseph...all we worry about is which coloured odd socks he's wearing today.

Probably because you never been pregnant
Never mind in the wrong circumstances.

& by the way a large number of pregnancies terminate, they are called periods early on. So if they aren't ever justified somebody messed up big time when they designed womens wombs.

You seem not to understand basic womens biology.
            Fertilised eggs frequently abort
They abort even easier after a jalopeno pizza, half bottle of gin and a hot bath.
Even perfectly formed 12 week old fetus can abort for no apparent reason.

                  No, you're way off.

A child born into poverty has as much a right to exist as any other child. A poor diet and crime might damage a child but at least it is alive. And just no, again. You asked loads of questions most of the answers are no

So helping an abort along is murder yes or no?
& if yes at what point exactly do you draw the line.
Because it requires a delicate chemical balance to catch & in some women is easily tipped.

How deep do you dig you in your pockets to help out kids fallen into poverty & crime or do you just watch the pics of starving babies , dead drive bys and think "tough f**k their fault for being born."

Well no reply fail twice over,
1/ Declaring abortion as murder is nonsense unless you define a precise point at which natural abortion becomes unnatural, and also how you reasonably intend to enforce that on women.

2/ You are also incapable of pregnancy yourself and have no proper concept of what it can mean to a woman and your opinion is therefore invalid anyway.

Played footy with some was big smiles all round, but understand some with DS are pretty immobile. Had a divorce in the extended family over the strains of that, the dad stayed with the kid.
Depends I think on what kind of a person you are on a scale of 100% empathy to 100% go getting hard nose.

Hi Wakey, serial long term lurker here. I would emagine being a parent to a child with D.S. is remarkably similar to being a parent of any child. Having worked with severe L.D.'s early in my career i would say though it would depend largely on the severity of the 'dissability' your child has as to how difficult or not it is compared to other more able children.

        Hi Maillot...

My son has a dual diagnosis of Autism and DS and definitely presents himself at the more challenging end as far as those looking inwards might think.

The severity of the disability and the circumstances of the parents, and their ability to cope, is an interesting situation. Really tough for those who have to have both parents out at work and have to cope with SLD.....really tough.

We are very lucky in that respect as we have the financial room for one of us to be full time carer...it makes a big difference.

Yep i'm sure it does buddy....i can honstly say i learned more off a gent with severe L.D.'s than most people i've ever met for a 5 year period in my early 20's. Challenging behaviour aside building skills and helping this guy to live a life taught me so much and truly changed my perspective on many things but i have to say merely working and sharing his life with him cannot measure upto the reality of living every minute of every day in such a situation. I saw the programme advertised but as usual i decided not to watch as i find it hard to watch any thing that looks at my own work life.....i need that time to wind down away from the stresses of work life. Something as a parent you cannot do of course but as a new parent of a 9 mth old daughter i would emagine you have some remarkably rewarding experiences exactly because your his parent. (appologies for my grammer and length of time for a response as i aint great with technology).

Glad you replied....and it's a footy site, not an English exam, so it doesn't matter.

It doesn't matter whether you have worked closely with them or if you are a parent...the point remains the same. The perception of the effect of caring for somebody with SLD or DS is not the same as the reality. You simply don't end up as a nervous wreck and worrying about them being a "burden. You just get on with it and learn a lot.

You would know a lot more about that than me wakey i reckon. I worked with L.D.'s for over 7 years but ended up moving on to something else precisely because i started to struggle with the day to day difficulties of supporting these guys (well that and the lack of support from management). i can certainly see both sides of that particular coin but as ever the media and commonly held misconceptions of any minority by the wider public will lead to some very odd attitudes. I do however always agree with your posts in this area and good for you bud for taking a stand when you see stuff going on that paints you and your family in a light you disagree with.

I would have thought that being a parent of a child would DS was much more difficult, particularly financially?

I guess there might also be a certain amount of frustration with government resources that are available to help?

How well can your kid take care of themselves? As in, when you get a lot older, will they able to take care of themselves?

      1. Dr Dream
        • 11 Years

        He won't be able to.

But then again most "regular" folks when they get older can't take care of themselves either...it just happens in a different time scale for DS..

It's a worry for sure but then (as above) if we worried about our off spring needing care at some point in their lives then nobody would have any kids at all because it happens to most of us at some point...DS or not...

I didn't watch the show but found your post interesting.

My perception is that it must be a whole mixture of things... I think that day to day I imagine there is all kinds of extra fun and insights into yourself and life, but also different challenges, stresses and tough bits.

We're expecting our 2nd in a couple of weeks and didn't do the DS screening for a number of reasons i won't go into here. We've considered how we'd feel if we had a child with DS. I imagine that it happened for us I would be perfectly happy, as still think it would be possible for them to have a whole and full life (maybe more so?...) but think I would probably also struggle with some elements of it - like re-imagining my expectations for what their life might be like. We have all kinds of pre-conceived hopes and expectations for our kids, and what their lives might be like as well as what sort of parents we hope to be. I imagine some of this changes and must take some fairly full on reflection and self-awareness? Or perhaps I'm wrong...

Anyway, glad to see you're doing well with it, having your voice heard and speaking about something important. Nice one 🙂

        • 11 Years

That "expectations" is a massive hurdle. Something happens, usually between 8-10 yrs old, when the parents realise that "expectatons" need to go and accept whatever will be will be. That's when it becomes easier.

Charlie's Austin's fixtures are far better than most people are suggesting. 4 home games in 6. Burnley and Hull coming up. The other 4 teams can't keep clean sheets. Saying Austin has terrible fixtures looks like a lazy FPL stereotype to me. People should understand that a team defensively might have poor fixtures but attacking wise they can be fine.

Real talk - they have middle of the road fixtures in the next 6, FFS ranks them 8th in their attacking tickers ranks. There.

Not sure that's true. Burnley are a tough team to score against, City, Chelsea, Hull away, Liverpool and Everton follow. Southampton are hardly looking like big scorers at home. They've managed 3 in 3 so far against poorer teams. I'd prefer Wilson from a similar price point, or Deeney at 7.0. Or a 4.5 striker and one of the several good 7-8 options in midfield. Austin is also a rotation risk.

Lovren too expensive to sit on bench? If you are playing 4.5 def such as Holebas over him, maybe you could downgrade him and use cash to upgrade one of your mids/fwds?

Thoughts on Stoke back line. Getting stronger? Worth a punt on Grant due to fixtures and assuming he'll be keeping Given on the bench.

Could really use some budget options on defense

Grant is a decent punt if you need funds elsewhere. I've got Pieters and will keep him in case they tighten up and get some CS, but they still don't inspire much confidence

      B.

After watching the City game I can't think for one minute that every player in that Spurs team isn't up for rotation. They were fantastic, but if anybody thinks they can play at that intensity every three or four days and not get rested then they are kidding themselves.

So yes...Liverpool mid over Spurs mid.

I could see the ideal being Sanchez, Coutinho, Firm and Sterling for the next few fixtures. I'm on Antonio, Coutinho, Mane and Sterling atm, and trying to work Sanchez in.

Pool will split points more evenly. Sanchez will get the lion's share of Arsenal's points.

Better to go double Pool mids and Sanchez than Sanchez/Wally plus one of the big 3 Pool mids.

In the previous three seasons Walker managed 2 goals and 8 assists. Rose on the other hand managed 5 goals and 16 assists

But your point on nailedness is spot on, Rose has never played more than 2400 minutes the aforementioned seasons, but he's usually very effective per game
