Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 8

With the international break nearing its conclusion, we’ve launched our latest captain poll to canvas your opinion on the likely favourites and differential options for the armband in Gameweek 8.

Alexis Sanchez (11.3) topped the Captain Poll in the previous round of fixtures, yet disappointed by blanking away to Burnley.

Nonetheless, we fully expect the 22.1% Fantasy Premier League owned Arsenal midfielder to be among the leading captaincy candidates this time out. A favourable home tie against Swansea City is a key factor, as is his strong recent form, with three goals and an assist in the last three league outings.

Sanchez was rested in the Premier League after the last international break, but that was partly due to the Gunners playing Paris Saint Germain away in the Champions League the following Tuesday. With Bulgarian minnows Ludogorets at home next Wednesday in the European competition, another rest in the league seems unlikely.

For those without the Chilean, Arsenal’s 7.7 priced Theo Walcott looks an enticing differential prospect for the captaincy.

Owned by just 8.1% of FPL managers, the winger has racked up three goals and as many assists this season and seems to be enjoying a security of starts that has been lacking in recent years.

Patience is wearing thin with Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.5), who has only one goal in his last five league outings, despite registering more shots than any other player over that period.

With a 50.2% ownership, he remains FPL’s most popular pick and is once again likely to attract interest for the captaincy. A trip to Anfield up suggests it would be surprising to see him among Gameweek 8’s frontrunners, given that lack of output.

Liverpool’s midfield stars are arguably more likely to attract interest, with Philippe Coutinho (8.3), Roberto Firmino (8.4) and Sadio Mane (9.0) scoring nine goals between them this season.

As we’ve seen time and again already, though, picking the correct Reds option in any given Gameweek is proving tricky and many owners may be deterred from handing Reds attackers the armband.

Sergio Aguero (13.1) loves Gameweek 8, putting four past Tottenham at home in 2014 and five against visitors Newcastle last season.

The 43.4% owned Manchester City striker’s has netted five times in as many matches ahead of a favourable home encounter with Everton on Saturday. As we discussed in this morning’s Scout Notes, though, Aguero is currently nursing a minor calf injury picked up in training while on international duty, with his owners now anxiously awaiting updates.

His team-mate Raheem Sterling (8.6) is another with a slight calf injury. If he can shake it off before this weekend, the 26.4% owned midfielder presents another strong captaincy option, with three assists and four goals already this term.

Others expected to figure strongly in this week’s poll include Diego Costa (10.1).

The 29.2% owned Chelsea striker may be one booking away from a ban but, having netted for Spain last night, has maintained the form that has harvested points in six of the first seven Gameweeks. No side has conceded more away from home than the reigning champions this season.

West Ham’s visit to Crystal Palace presents two strong differential candidates in Hammers midfielder Dimitri Payet and Eagles striker Christian Benteke (7.6).

Payet (9.4) has created more chances than any other player over the last four league matches and has also assisted three times. Crystal Palace’s failure to register a clean sheet this season further boosts the prospects of the 13.2% owned midfielder, who continued his rise to form by netting for France in the recent internationals.

Meanwhile, 6.9% owned Benteke will be hoping to add to a record of three goals in his last four starts, as he squares up to a West Ham side that has conceded a league-worst 17 goals this season, nine of which were shipped on the road.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later this week, as we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering our view of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

City need a big reaction from the team after getting bossed by Spurs. He needs his best team out. If City get a bad result vs Swansea and Aguero was on the bench it just looks bad on Pep and morale is further depleted from the team going in against Barca.

I can see Aguero subbed at like 70 mins if City are winning 2 or 3-0

Needs players at 100% too.. Iheanacho has proven he can step in..
Just don't see a home game against Everton as a game to take an unnecessary risk if he is carrying a niggle of any kind.. if he's fine he plays no question

They actually looked better with Iheanacho for those couple of games....or at least as good as makes no odds.

I doubt the manager would be fazed one little bit by being carful with Aguero.

Never said they were.. they are however a team City would expect to beat at home with or without Aguero given the talent at their disposal.. this could all be irrelevant if he is fit and he will play but you may take a risk on a star player for a huge game or a potential title decider.. not Everton at home at this early stage

City have just lost and really can't risk another bad result. KdB is out, they will play Aguero if he is fit.

What to do with this lot?

        Pickford
        Valencia, Collins, Williams
        Sanchez (C), Antonio, Coutinho, Sterling
        Lukaku, Aguero, Rashford

        Heaton, Capoue, Evans, Amat

        1 FT - 0.7m ITB

Sterling, Kun and Lukaku are all carrying knocks - assuming they all pull through I'm thinking of moving out a defender as don't like any of Valencia, Williams or Evans currently.
Perhaps a Bournemouth, Arsenal, Liverpool or Hull defender?
        Thanks

There solidity at the back is largely down to Toby and his partnership with Vertonghen.. adding Wanyama in the summer just strengthened them even further from a defensive point of view i would be very surprised if any team ships fewer goals than Spuds

                Yep, agreed.

Feel daft that I didn't start with a Spurs defender from GW1 tbh, but Valencia's preseason form + Mourinho was too tempting to ignore!

Rose is exactly the same as Bellerin in potential, he's cheaper so may as well ignore Bellerin this year, pick up Rose to cover Spurs and get on a 6m Arsenal defender and aim for a similar style of returns that Toby A would return but also a cheaper version.

Rose and Koscienly/Mustafi won't be far apart from the more expensive Bellerin/Toby A combo.

            A) Reported minor injury
            B) Player himself said he is fine
            C) Most likely fell out with manager (my opinion not a report)
            D) He said he is ready for selection for Argentina's Tuesday game
            E) He travelled with the Belgian squad for their 2nd game. Implies he is fine

I hope for Southampton's sake that the probability of Redmond scoring vs. Burnley is higher than you scoring with Rachel Riley, but I take your point!

          G2G ??

          Pickford

          Shaw? Walker Bertrand?

          Sanchez Son Snoddy Coutinho

          Austin Aguero Sturridge

          Jaku-Capoue-Smith-McAuley

Shaw should be back and Bertrand still a doubt would swap for Cedric and if I had too Shaw for Arsenal defender.

So , with all the new info on picking your Capt, what do you do ?
You go with Gut . Always has been always will be the way to go.
Running out a realm of stats to find a Cpt choice is just laughable .
In a 1 off game such stats mean absolutely zilch

Fixture mainly. A little bit of stats. No guts though, there has to be a reasoning in my Capt choice. If I can't explain why so-and-so is my Capt, then he can't be my Capt

            Stats mean nothing.
If Aguero has or hasn't scored in a while and City are at home to a lower team where you going?
            Aguero.
Never have been one for stats in ff tend to go with what I see for myself

Killultagh Vic ante post for the Cheltenham Gold Cup at 28/1. Has a victory over hurdles over the current GC favourite Thistlecrack. Been off the track since last Christmas with an injury but is a chaser to follow.
Also if you are feeling punty Bubbly Bluebird for next year's greyhound derby ( won his last 10 graded races on the bounce).
Finished betting on our flat now - changing ground , horses been on the go for ages leads to strange results. Will post on here if I have something but will probably need another month for the jumps season to get cracking properly.
