The Stock Check – Gameweek 8 – Monday

A dour Anfield affair offered scant reward for Fantasy Football managers as defences came out on top.

That added up to another ineffective evening for Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who played his part in a guarded United performance, resulting in another blank with inevitable Fantasy Premier League sales to follow.

Here’s the final Stock Check of Gameweek 8…

On the Rise

Nathaniel Clyne
Owned by less than 9% of Fantasy Premier League managers, the Liverpool right-back shook off a knee problem to start and play his part in a first clean sheet of the season for the Reds. Clyne claimed the maximum bonus points on offer after winning all four of his attempted tackles.

Priced at 5.5, his stock is somewhat limited by his price point which, in the current landscape, presents a significant obstacle. Dejan Lovren, at 4.9, remains our preferred route into Jurgen Klopp’s rearguard.

With West Brom, Crystal Palace and Watford up next, further defensive returns for Clyne and Lovren could be on the horizon.

David de Gea
A world class save from Philippe Coutinho’s long-range effort kept the scoreline at 0-0 and helped De Gea to only his third save point of the season.

The Spaniard also edged a bonus point as United won their third clean sheet of the campaign – their first since Gameweek 3 as the Spaniard’s 40% ownership fetched belated returns.

Jose Mourinho’s rearguard takes on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in Gameweek 9, followed by an Old Trafford meeting with Burnley and a trip to Swansea City.

In Decline

Zlatan Ibrahimovic
Almost inevitably, Ibrahimovic suffers a further blow as he blanked for the third Gamweek in four and picked up a second successive yellow card.

That’s now just four points in four Gameweeks, during which time his price has dropped from 11.9 to 11.4, with more than 620,000 showing him the exit.

The Swede will dominate the transfers out column again heading into Gameweek 9, with Diego Costa and Romelu Lukaku the major benefactors of the continued fall-out.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Mane, Sterling, Walcott, Snodgrass, Capoue

    A. Ibra + Snodgrass to Austin/Wilson + KDB (leaves me with triple City attack)
    B. Ibra + Sterling to Austin/Wilson + Sanchez/KDB (leaves 2.1/2.8m in the bank)
    C. Ibra + Evans to Austin/Wilson + Bellerin (leaves 3m in the bank)

I am looking at this also. the big scoring teams like Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool do not rely on one player for points and it really is quite spread out this year. So I really don't see Sanchez or Aguero as essential when you have players like Walcott/Ozil, KDB/Sterling and Coutinho/Firmino/Lallana/Mane scoring well.

While Sanchez and Aguero obviously have that explosive big haul potential, they are very pricey and I have a hunch that KDB will match them for points in the coming weeks.

I can do Sanchez Sterling to Walcott KDB but it seems quite sideways especially with the next two Arsenal have, think it may have to be a reluctant hold off on KDB until after those games

Am I mad to bring in Austin (mci) for The Rash (che) this week for -4? Really annoyed with myself for dithering over this one last week when Charlie was 6.2, and am loathed to miss another increase. I do need to build funds to facilitate a Cap-upgrade 2-3 weeks down the line.

    Gw9 lineup:
    Cech (MID)
Walker (bou) Collins (SUN) Pieters (hul)

Not mad no. But the time really was last week.

For a hit I just can't see how it's worth it though. Away at City? You're essentially just accepting a minus 2 plus 10 players this week just to plan for the future with an extra 0.1 in the bank.

He couldn't pass water last night. He's a number 9 and is bit wasted in another role. But Zlatan is never, ever getting dropped so it's all a bit moot. We missed Mata last night. Pogba was dire second half and played too far forward.

I have 7 green arrows.. I can scarce believe it. And when I checked my history I realized that 6 out of the 8 gameweeks that have been so far, I have managed to pick my highest scoring player as captain!

And this really has made all the difference. Some gameweeks my captain was the only player to do something of note. But with 7 green arrows and a sub 15K ranking already I am pretty happy with the season start.

For me, this highlights the fact that it is imperative to focus on the squad I have and make the right decisions when it comes to benching and who to captain(5 different captains so far). Transfers and points hits should come only as a last resort, when injuries and such start to creep in.

So far I have made one points hit and the WC has been played. Yes, I have utilized transfers, but have stayed away from the usual bandwagons and knee-jerks and focused on looking ahead and having faith in the players I have picked.

    I think this is key.

(I am not trying to boast, just trying to highlight what I think has gone right for me so far! I might be wrong, but at least I am getting some decent results after some disappointing previous seasons! :))

Interestingly, the two gameweeks my captain failed, both times a penalty was missed!! So just bad luck in those cases I guess. You would be surprised how many times I have made stupid captain decisions in previous campaigns though...

That's kind of beside the point. I am trying to highlight what I think is important to focus on.

Interesting that you mention this about luck... It has nothing to do with me making the right decisions and all about being lucky is it??

Of course it is. What does focus on even mean. You just look at your team and figure out who likely to get most points, not rocket science

The captaincy pick is one thing. But I also mentioned other things in my post. Like having faith in the selections you make and taking the time to set up the squad you have. It's often all too easy to get too carried away with what has happened in the previous gameweek and focusing on that, rather than looking ahead at what is to come.

Your obviously angry so I'll just leave it at that.

I'm not angry. Glad for you. My point was purely regarding captain picks. When you get them right it's a great feeling but don't kid yourself it's because you're playing better than someone who's captains are blanking

As I said you have done well but there is a good slice of luck it for everyone not just you or I. In 12 game weeks time lets see if you are still making the same spot on picks evwry week. I font think it will be the case.

I'm the complete opposite. Haven't had a goal or an assist from my captain since week 2.

I'm rank 340k and worked out I would be top 5k with just captaining my best attacker each week. Makes such a difference.

Last year my mate captained the best player in his team a staggering 12 weeks in a row. We started betting on his captain scoring each week he was so lucky. He was ranked 96 in January, but fell away badly last two months to just outside top 10k.

I think I was about 1.5 million this time last year. And I remember how frustrating it was to have players scoring well, but never scoring well with my captain.

But crucially though, I think it is equally important to focus on what's to come rather than bringing in players just because they have had a good gameweek or two...

True. I'm happy with my team. Looking at it next week even if I had unlimited free transfers I would only swap one player from it.

Just need to captain the right person. Six of my front seven have what look like home bankers. Watch me pick the one that screws that up!

Yeah, next weekis difficult in my opinion. All the top teams have fixtures that may look straight forward, but they are quite tricky... I'll most likely pick the wrong one also, now that mentioned how well I have been doing in that department so far!

I realise this has been done to death, but who would you pick as your 4th (or even 5th, they'd be playing most weeks though) mid:

    A) Allen - Amazing form, great stats, playing in the hole (hul, SWA, whu, BOU, wat, BUR, ars etc.)
    B) Stanislas - Great form, exciting player, on pens and set pieces (TOT, mid, SUN, sto, ars, LIV, bur etc.)
    C) Snoddy - Okay form, somewhat proven, on pens and set pieces (STO, wat, SOU, sun, WBA, mid, CRY)
    D) Other

Any of these players seems worth a hit with their value, form and fixtures.

“I’d won the penalty and as a striker, naturally, not having scored, I wanted it,” he said.

“The ball was thrown over my head and one of their players gave it to Junior before I got a chance to get over there. So I wasn't going to put him off, I let him take it. He assisted me last time (against Watford), so he can have it this week!

"We always like the players to take responsibility; we had a designated penalty taker," said Howe. "For whatever reason he didn't want to take it, so it changed in motion, so that's something we'll look at. I'm very pleased with the fact we were clinical in front of goal.
