The Pre-Match Preamble – Gameweek 9

This week’s game-changing transfer has seen me trade the “Ginge” liability that is James Collins for Watford’s veteran left-back, currently masquerading as a worthwhile Fantasy asset.

To be fair, Jose Holebas has answered a few prayers.

Mild panic sets in each time I dare to glance at my fragile defence. Antonio Valencia remains my “big ticket” item, and he’s only likely to deliver when Jose Mourinho elects to reverse park the double decker.

But then Holebas steps up, throws in a few set-pieces and scores a second 25-yard screamer. It’s a no-brainer, belatedly, I got me to the Greek.

It’s another tedious trade that is very much in line with my current transfer policy.

This time last week I made the unlikely and unwanted move for Southampton’s Cuco Martina (look him up, he does exist, and he once did this).

That went well.

A couple of points pocketed and now, despite Claude Puel promising there was a chance I may get a few games out of my modest investment, it seems Cedric is to return early and consign Martina back to even greater obscurity.

But my Gameweek 8 experience confirmed one thing: our efforts to attempt to seek out assured clean sheets look doomed.

Southampton were the bookies favourites for a shut-out against Burnley. They’d earned three successive clean sheets in the Premier League, six in all competitions.

Meanwhile, the Clarets turned up with the fewest goals, the fewest shots and relying on the creativity of a Belgian architect with an hour-long battery, feeding the huff and puff of Sam Vokes.

It doesn’t get much better than that and yet, typically, Mike Dean intervened to dish out another spot-kick and spoil my Martina “masterstroke”.

The men in black are scrutinising every set-piece, watching for any point of contact – good news for the likes of Pardew and Pulis, pretty much disastrous for Fantasy managers seeking to bank points from sure-bet shut-out scenarios.

With penalties scattered around like confetti, it seems that even the most resilient defence can be breached.

So while my transfers are now limited to uninspiring shuffles from one budget defender to another, perhaps that’s no bad thing.

Dean’s decision caused frustration, but at least I resisted the urge to cut an asset from my midfield to shell out for the hefty Virgil van Dijk.

I covet the Arsenal and Liverpool defences today but suspect that another set-piece goal or powder puff penalty could rear its head.

Our attempts to predict clean sheets, assess form and fixtures will still continue regardless – but the refs are threatening to ride roughshod over best-laid plans, frustrating Fantasy managers with their penalty box finicking.

Mike Dean almost certainly has a budget defence, and for once, I can’t blame him.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

There is not a single other player in the premier league who has a chance of scoring 4 or 5 goals in a game. Get Kun captained on that game and he is worth all the money and more. Drop him at your peril.

Is Aguero about to make Pep look a bit silly and get a hat trick? Or leave armband on in form Wally?

Also Antonio vs Allen still to be decided!

It is written in the stars for a Kun haul.

saying that, I am playing it safe with Alexis (so i'd say keep armband on Theo)

ps. I also switched Capoue to Allen last night and playing 3-5-2 (Rashford on bench)

      Good luck Andy

Captain Alexis, armband in it's place!
    Praying on another Sanchez brace...

Wanted Walcott, couldn't find the space,
    Hoping for another Sanchez brace.

Coulda been Costa, cannea stand his face,
Waiting on a dreamy Sanchez brace.

Wanna top my mini-league, way behind the race,
Screaming for a scorching Sanchez brace.

Shoulda got Firmino, Coutinho just in case,
Better see a Sanchez blinding brace.

If he makes my dreams true, forget good winners grace,
I'll be braaagggggiiiing abbbooout my Sannn-cchceezz Brace!

As much as I love this site I think sometimes the logic followed is a bit odd. I see people dropping kun and more or less counting him out. He's scored 5 this season in 8 gw. He's missed a pen .. he got rested then dropped for a euro game and the reason has been explained. He STILL the best player in the game

I'm really confused between Sanchez and Walcott for captain. Sanchez seems the better pick but...

I have this feeling that Sanchez seems to perform better away than at home so I had a look at some stats. This season his away form kills his home form. Even last season there isn't much in it. Obviously he had more of the ball at home but his mins per goal and shot accuracy were both worse at home than away. Walcott seems to be very much a home player - all stats seem better at home than away.

So is it obvious to go Walcott over Sanchez?

      1. Oven Glover
        • 8 Years

Why pay 11.something and still think about captaining a cheaper player from the same team. There is a difference in price for a reason. Sanchez OOP as well.

Price doesn't mean points! Dont agree with that argument at all. Sanchez is OOP alright but Walcott playing pretty high up the pitch too.

just cause there more expensive it doesnt mean they should always have the captaincy. wont get very far with that method

Well I own both because they both seem strong right now but I try and forget about price. I don't think who to captain should be judged on FPLs value.

      Need help please! Can't decide!

I have 1 FT and thought I should get rid of Capoue.. I had some money from before so I have 8.8 to play with.
I looking for a long term solution.. My mid now is, Sanchez, Walcott, Firmino, Capoue and De Roon where I bench De Roon everytime.
      So who should I choose?
      1. Siggy
      2. Allen
      3. Arnautovic
      4. Son
      5. Save and have 2 FT next round.. and play Capoue/Stones or Amat.

Argh, paralysed by indecision! 2FT, £0.1m in the bank:

      Grant
      Walker Williams Holebas
      Sanchez Sterling Firmino Antonio
      Aguero Lukaku Rashford

      (Pickford Capoue McAuley Amat)

      Have vague ideas to:
      Upgrade a keeper
      Upgrade a defender (McAuley)
Give Antonio one last change before getting rid
Rashford to Wilson or Austin (or maybe keep for the Burnley game?)
Find a way to get Walcott in?

A lot of the ideas are difficult with the low amount in the bank. What do you think should be my priority? Want to make use of at least on FT. Or anyone from my bench I should play this week?

We have basically the exact same team, cash in the bank and number of transfers! I really want Theo, but don't want to drop Sterling for him.

As such, considering Rashford, Antonio and Williams out for Theo, Austin and a cheap defender for -4?

Haha, snap! Interesting suggestion, but I think if I take a hit, I'd want to upgrade my defence as part of it - I went too cheapskate when I used my WC in GW6! Might just do the Rashford transfer and get a bit more in the bank for next week's transfers. Still can't decide!

I just bit the bullet and did the minus 4. Changed Austin to Wilson on a hunch though.

            Now got:
            Jaku, Pickford
            Walker, Holebas, Francis, Lowton, Kingsley
            Sanchez, Walcott, Firmino, Sterling, Capoue
            Aguero, Lukaku, Wilson

Stacked front 8 but awfully cheap defence and keeper...good job there aren't many clean sheets around currently!

Worth doing one of the following options for a -4 hit?

      A) Antonio > Lallana
