Injuries

The Treatment Table – Gameweek 12

Jurgen Klopp admits that Adam Lallana could be sidelined another couple of league matches. Arsene Wenger concedes that Santi Cazorla is still unavailable for Arsenal, while Vincent Kompany’s catalogue of injuries is extended, after mysteriously suffering a knee problem that will see him seek specialist treatment. Here’s our review of the newcomers to the Premier League treatment tables.

Santi Cazorla

Speaking to the press earlier today, Arsene Wenger believes Cazorla – who has missed Arsenal’s last four league matches with an Achilles injury – could be sidelined for a further two to four weeks. When quizzed on the Spaniard’s likely return date, Wenger offered this uncharacteriscally pessimistic response…

“At the moment I’ve given a little bit up on that [predicting a return date for Cazorla], I don’t know how far he is. It looks to me that he’s making progress but as long as a player is not in full-time training with the squad, it’s very difficult to set targets. It’s not a big injury that will harm his future but it’s an inflammation at the back of his Achilles and it’s always very difficult on inflammations to give a set time. My gut feeling is it will be short, two weeks. But when a player comes back to full training it still takes two weeks for a player to be ready to play again.”

Given Wenger’s prognosis, it would appear that Cazorla could now miss another three Gameweeks and fixtures with West Ham, Everton and Manchester City. That will come as a major blow given that the Gunners have drawn three of their last four in the league, with Cazorla’s creativity from central midfield sorely missed.

Elsewhere, Wenger confirmed that his squad had all “recovered” from the weekend clash with United, although both Theo Walcott and Aaron Ramsey, who missed training today, were left on on “recovery” but were expected to be in contention for tomorrow night’s tie.

He also provided a short-sharp update on the progress of striker Lucas Perez who is currently sidelined with a knee injury…

“He’s back in training already, but not with the squad. He’s ahead of schedule.”

Artur Boruc, Jordon Ibe

Boruc missed Saturday’s 1-0 win against Stoke City due to a back injury, while Ibe was ruled out due to illness, although the winger was also involved in an off-the-field incident during the international break.

Boruc only just failed a late fitness test, though, and looks to have a good chance of being fit to return at the expense of Adam Federici against Arsenal on Sunday.

Even if Ibe is available for the trip to the Emirates, he may face a tougher time reclaiming his starting berth given the form of both Junior Stanislas and Josh King in the wide positions for the Cherries in recent matches.

Islam Slimani

The Leicester City forward remains a doubt for Saturday’s home encounter against Middlesbrough after being ruled out of tonight’s Champions League clash against Club Brugge due to an ongoing groin injury that saw him miss the weekend loss at Watford.

Foxes boss Claudio Ranieri said the Algerian was “not ready yet,” placing doubt as to whether he’ll be fit to face ‘Boro.

Ranieri’s side have only won one of their last seven in the Premier League, seeing them slide down to 14th in the table, so the Italian will be desperate to have the club-record signing available for the weekend, bearing in mind that he has produced three goals and an assist in four home outings.

Jamie Vardy and Shinji Okazaki look likely to lead the line should Slimani miss out.

Adam Lallana

Speaking after Saturday’s goalless draw against Southampton, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp revealed that Adam Lallana could be ruled out for another week or two with the groin injury he picked up during England’s 2-2 draw against Spain:

“It was serious enough to be not involved today and possibly the next two or three games. We don’t know exactly in the moment but that was the only problem we had.”

The Reds midfielder looks very unlikely to feature against Sunderland on Saturday, then, while he may face a race against time to be fit for the Gameweek 14 trip to Bournemouth if the injury is worse than first feared.

Lallana has already been transferred out by over 25,000 FPL bosses this week, with that number set to increase significantly as we head towards the Gameweek 13 deadline should he be confirmed as being out by Klopp in his pre-match press conference.

Georginio Wijnaldum is likely to retain his place against the Black Cats, allowing Klopp to field Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane as his front three at Anfield.

George Friend

Following Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to Chelsea, Middlesbrough head coach Aitor Karanka revealed George Friend’s knee injury is worse than initially feared:

“I thought it was nothing serious but I think it is going to be two or three weeks.”

The ‘Boro left-back suffered the injury during training, with the problem thought to be nothing more than a minor niggle.

But the defender now looks likely to miss Saturday’s trip to Leicester City, and most likely the Gameweek 14 home clash against Hull City, too.

Fabio deputised at left-back against Chelsea, and looks set to retain his starting role at the King Power Stadium. Karanka also utilised Stewart Downing in defence late on in Sunday’s loss and could opt for the former West Ham man if he chooses to go on the offensive.

Vincent Kompany

The Manchester City defender was forced off during the first-half of Saturday’s 2-1 win over Crystal Palace with a head injury after being involved in a collision with Claudio Bravo. However, it has since transpired that the Belgian has suffered a knee problem which, according to Pep Guardiola, will mean that he will be sidelined for a number of weeks.

It’s unknown how Kompany suffered this latest setback, with no apparent signs of such an injury in Saturday’s contest. However, Guardiola has confirmed that there is ligament damage and that he will be treated in Barcelona at Dr Ramon Cugat’s clinic – a renowned expert on sports knee injuries.

“He could be out for weeks. He’s sad and I’m sad. It’s a long time he doesn’t play. He is in the best hands so he can recover as soon as possible. He [Cugat] will make the best treatment possible. The doctor told me a few weeks [that Kompany will be out]. We’ll see. It is ligaments.”

Guardiola also went on to indicate that he remained concerned about Kompany’s ongoing injuries…

“We have to try to help him week after week to see if he can play more often. Deciding now is not the right thing.”

Owners of John Stones will be hoping that he now makes a return to the XI after Guardiola opted to bench him in Gameweek 12 with one eye on the midweek Champions League encounter with Monchengladbach. Over 16,000 FPL managers have already sold the summer signing this week, with Stones mustering just a single clean sheet in 11 appearances.

Phil Bardsley

The Stoke City defender was forced off with a knock during Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Bournemouth following a collision with Jack Wilshere, and was reportedly seen leaving the bet365 Stadium on crutches.

Bardsley was replaced by the returning Glen Johnson at right-back, and the latter could now be set to start for Saturday’s trip to Vicarage Road should Bardsley be ruled out.

Johnson has dropped to 4.7 in FPL ahead of clashes with Watford and Burnley but with the fixtures turning against Mark Hughes’ side from Gameweek 15, few will be willing to punt on the Potters’ defence.

Paddy McNair, Jan Kirchhoff, Jason Denayer

McNair played on after picking up a knock during the first-half of Saturday’s 3-0 win over Hull City, before eventually being replaced in the 87th minute.

The extent of the problem has yet to be confirmed, but while the injury may not be anything serious given he played on, he is an early doubt for Saturday’s trip to Anfield.

Sunderland boss David Moyes also revealed that he is currently concerned about the availability of Jason Denayer ahead of Saturday’s encounter, with the Belgian suffering a tight hamstring late on in the victory over Hull.

“He just felt his hamstring at the end so I’ve just got to hope he’s OK.”

Meanwhile, German midfielder Jan Kirchhoff stepped up his recovery from a hamstring injury with a run-out for the club’s U23 side last night.

Kirchhoff got 90 minutes under his belt in the 2-0 win over Manchester United U23s, and also got on the scoresheet: he may now be in line to play some part in Saturday’s match against Liverpool.

Moyes also has an injury concern over Jack Rodwell (hamstring), while Sebastian Larsson, who also played 90 minutes for the reserves, is only just returning from injury himself.

Steven Pienaar will return at Anfield after serving a one-match ban, but Kirchhoff’s defensive qualities may be needed in the Black Cats’ midfield up against the most potent attack in the Premier League.

Saido Berahino

The West Bromwich Albion forward has been sent back to the conditioning camp that he’s recently attended in the south of France to continue to work on his fitness.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Berahino said:

“I have had a good, constructive talk with Tony Pulis and the Club’s senior management and we all agree this is the best way forward for me.”

Berahino remains out of the first-team picture for the foreseeable future, then, with Salomon Rondon underlining just why he’s Pulis’ preferred pick to lead the line by bagging a goal and assist at home to Burnley last night.

Who goes to help me raise the 1.1 I need to do Lukaku to Kane:

    A. Benteke (spend up to 6.4)
    B. Redmond (up to 4.9)
    C. Sanchez (up to 10.2)
    D. Other?

Obviously Benteke or Redmond out but I am struggling to find a good replacement at those price points.

Benteke -> Austin, Redmond -> Chadli (if fit)? Wouldn't that give you the cash you need?

I know it is an extra transfer, but maybe Lukaku -> Kane can wait a week.

I would love to do those two moves but I could only spend 6.4 by losing Benteke and Austin is 6.8, so I would need to spend 5.6 max by losing Redmond. And I may add that the 4.5 mid is O. Romeu so I'm maxed at three soton to bring in Austin

Ah yeah sorry now I get it.

It is really tough price brackets you are in with A and B when it concerning your 7th attacker and I really wouldn't want to lose Sanchez with his upcoming fixtures.

You are even priced out of Capoue, who I don't even fancy.

Are you set on doing it this week? Kane doesn't have a much bigger chance to score than Lukakku this week imo. Maybe the extra week would help you finding a solution.

It nags at me, but I will probably do this move next week. Since I will probably take a hit to make this transfer, I try to plan and figure out if this hit would be more justified this week or next.

You are right that I should wait and see if an alternative develops

That is just my opinion at least. Wouldn't downgrade anyone this week to do Lukaku -> Kane. Maybe an injury or something gives you a better idea on who to lose for for GW 14.

How much is the midweek match (in Germany as well) a factor against Aguero this week? Is there much of a difference, physically speaking, between what Aguero will be doing throughout the week than Coutinho or Firmino? Or is the travel the main factor?

2FT and trying to be patient; just make a defense housekeeping transfer this week and go a big move next week. But I just realized I have exact money to do Kun+Walcott->Costa+Hazard. Would still have Sanchez, Firmino and Couts as well. Kun's form tomorrow may be the deciding factor.

Yeah maybe you are right. And I don't even rate Walcott that highly - just not a big fan of shipping Kun for Costa with Spurs upcoming in a derby, which could see him get his 5th yellow. But that yellow thing has been going on for while, so I guess we need to forget that argument.

I think I'd go for it, you'll be priced out with any more movement and like you say you'll want them next week. I'm a sucker for an exact money transfer 🙂

On paper the City & Arsenal fixtures are plum, but Chelsea could quite easily do over Spurs this week who aren't as hot defensively as they have been, esp. with Toby missing. If they roll them over then Haz/Costa are extremely likely to be involved.

Factor in Aguero and Walcott being possible rotation risks, I'd jump on it.

Yeah tough call. I just don't rate Liverpool's CS chances that highly, but he has a better chance of attacking returns than some of the others.

I just can't bench Clyne coz I can't justify his purchase if I do.
(he has 2 more weeks to dazzle me or he's out for Alonso)

Look at the odds I posted above.

The logical call would be playing Clyne after watching the odds and factoring in his chance of attacking returns. I just don't see a Pool cs 😉

      CS chances according to bet365:

      a) Clyne @1.72
      b) Darmian @2.10
      c) Holebas @3.25
      d) Evans - @2.75

No no I agree and they aren't only about the chance of something happening. Usually they tend to give an indication nonetheless. As I said above, I would bench Clyne even though it wouldn't make sense compared to the odds.

The odds are probably the best indicator, but the bookies are very conservative with their odds until the exchange markets are fully formed (i.e there is enough money being bet on them). An example of this is YMA's captaincy article where he lists Aguero's odds at 8/15 (1.53), whereas later in the week (when the exchange markets were formed) he was trading around 4/5 (1.8)

Ah yeah you are completely right that they probably give a better indication later in the week. But during the discussion at this point, I still think they have some value.

I always use clean sheet, anytime goalscorer odds for split decisions.

    What would u do next?
Either save the ft or replace Sterling or Stones.

    Heaton.
    Stones, Holebas, Lovren.
    Sanchez, Coutinho, Pedro, Sterling.
    Lukaku, Austin, Aguero.
    Pickford, Walker, Amat G Whelan,

Does anyone have an idea which of FFScout's or Fix's projected points/RMTs is more accurate? I know you shouldn't give be influenced too much by these.

FFS' RMT says I should bench Nyom, but FFfix's says that I should bench Snoddy and play McAuley, Evans, Nyom and Holebas.

Looks like all in with FFfix. If Snoddy is involved in a goal, you lose 3 CS and scored 6 from 3. A CS makes 18 via FFfix and 14 via FFS. All about if you want all in vs hedging.

Haha yeah that is the thing. Went well this gw, but afraid I am pushing my luck doing it again.

If you look at my post below, my CS % this season is terrible 10 out of 37 possible), so maybe best/funniest strategy is just to triple up 🙂

Do you think Hull/Snoddy will score this GW?

Think FFS right even though I didn't use its RMT. My friend has an account on FFfix and last gameweek he said that KDB was going to be benched according to FFfix and it had 28% on KDB starting and 72% for Silva starting. I had to change my cap to lukaku. FFfix is poor just like its price rise fall algorithm

What is your percentage of CS from your defenders this season?

Mine is horrible and I even had an expensive defence up until last week's WC.

Yeah 10 out of 48ish possible isn't great. Less than once per week. But I guess you have been getting some save points from Heaton and maybe even caught some attacking return from Alonso.

Haven't gotten a single attacking return from defenders GW 1-11 owning PVA, Baines, Stones, Shaw, Smith and others. Finally Nyom came through this weekend 😉

Only gotten keeper clean sheets from DDG.

Now I just decided to go uber cheap in defence when wildcarding and taking a risk with WBA.

Yes I just got one attacking return from Alonsos goal but thats just it. Heaton saved me yes. Still in a somewhat decent 100k rank after such a torrid defense so its alright.

I've been a little lucky in that sense:

4 assists to go along with that

        • 11 Years
        7 years, 6 months ago

Wow that is actually a good stat for your defenders..

The thing that really bugs me is that I spent a lot of money on my defenders up until this week and it really didn't pay off + all the points lost by what I could have spent that money on. 7/34 with an expensive defender setup has been a big part of my poor season so far.

Pulis all the way now 😉

          Thanks 🙂

Well that's true... It's one thing to not get defensive returns with a majority sub-4.5 defence and another to blank with premium defenders. I normally set my defensive budget around 25m. Plus another around 9m for keepers.

          1. Licious Lizard
            • 11 Years

I usually do the same. This season have just led me to some terrible decisions.

Baines, Shaw, PVA who all got injured/didn't play + playing Stones week in, week out constantly expecting City to tighten up.

After last season being smashed by Spurs defensive rotation, I wanted to stay clear and Arsenal was just too expensive.

Now I am currently happy with my Holebas, 3xWBA def and Kingsley. Will bring in Cedric in soon.

Haha yep a bit, but I was stubborn as well- not a very good combination.

Cedric is seemingly very good value @4.9 with their upcoming fixtures. Y

eah I think it will be doable, although WBA's fixtures are a bit patchy. 2 will have to suffice from GW 15/17...

Yeah of course you will have to take his price into account. I just still think that with other decent cheap options, he will be worth his price by the end of the season. Unfortunately Costa has almost caught up with Kun's Minutes pr. goal stat, so obviously it hasn't been the case so far.

At this point I think a lot of people will be shipping him if he doesn't deliver this week. I think I'll keep him, but a lot can change fast 😉

This is going to be exciting. Kun vs Costa

Yep. Before transfers at least, I think you guys had a few more Costas and we had a few more Augeros. Basically that is also what determined our first defeat. Hopefully it will be the other way around this week.

Costa will give Spurs a good spanking over the weekend...without Toby, spur's defence is no longer the same

We'll see. I will be putting my faith in Aguero against a Burnley team that just let in 4 goals against Pulis' WBA! They can claim that they have a solid defence at home all they want, but that horrible defence is finally catching up with them and Heaton's heroics couldn't save them anymore

Keeping for now. One blank and people have lost their mind.

one blank? 4 out of 10 to be more accurate...

If you're looking over a longer period, yes he's had some blanks, but it wasn't long ago that people were talking of getting rid and he smashed West Brom and immediately everyone wanted him back. He's explosive, captain material and proven.

see your point...those who got him back probably missed out on the Haz and Costa haul on GW11....Would you captin him every week seeing that there may be other viable options around?

Kun 8 goals in 10 matches.

Costa 10 goals in 12 matches.

Nobody is saying that Aguero has been the better pick so far this season. That just doesn't necessarily mean he won't be going forward.

Kun will always be Kun..he'll score goals...the point being would the extra cash be spread elsewhere more worthwhile?

Of course that is the relevant question everybody need to ask themselves.

In my view he will be worth his price long term - still a lot of good mid priced options out there who can compliment him well. . As I said above, I will be holding for now at least. Why people are ditching him this week for either Costa/Kane is simply beyond me... And of course Costa is in an amazing run of form at the moment, but I don't think he will continue being THIS prolific (and scoring 30+ goals over the season).

      Pieters.
Lowest chance of CS and lowest chance of attacking returns imo.

Play 4-3-3 with Alonso (other defs Clyne, Holebas & McAuley) or play Capoue?

Probably Capoue. If you are not going to play him for nice home fixtures not much point having him at all. Chelsea CS run has to end sometime.

He's 5th mid bench fodder anyway. Allen's my 4th mid who's suspended this week. But yeah, I'm leaning towards Capoue as well.

I'd play Alonso, but would consider playing Capoue over Clyne.

What ye think of this lot from GW 14 onwards. Will take 2 by -4 to get it. Walcott the one slot I am really unsure of could be Siggy or even Mata but don't want to go without any Arsenal.Other suggestions for this position or anything else please. Only.1 left ITB after getting this team.
Finally Kane could be Costa opinions on this as an option from Gw15 onwards.

    Heaton Jaku
    Alonso Rose Cedric Amat Lenihan
    KDB Hazard Couthino Firmino Walcott
    Kane Austin Diomande

No that is after losing Bellerin Sanchez Coleman and Wilson who I currently have. Don't like losing Sanchez but I think the changes make a better team overall.

It is planned for Gw14 I would only get Costa from 15 onwards and only if he had taken that yellow and suspension already .
