The Stock Check – Gameweek 14 – Sunday

Roberto Firmino draws a blank as Sadio Mane and Emre Can plunder the points prior to Liverpool’s late collapse at the Vitality. Later in the day, Zlatan Ibrahimovic continues his improved form as Romelu Lukaku’s stock plummets further…

On The Rise

Sadio Mane
Liverpool’s top scorer took his tally to seven goals for the season after slotting home the opener at the Vitality Stadium.

The second most transferred in player for Gameweek 14 due to team-mate Philippe Coutinho’s injury, Mane netted away from Anfield for the first time since the season opener at Arsenal and also chipped in with an assist against the Cherries.

Although he’s set to depart for the Africa Cup of Nations next month, the packed hectic schedule could still see Mane rack up the points.

Between Gameweek 15-20, which takes us all the way up to January 2, he faces West Ham, Middlesbrough, Everton, Stoke and Sunderland, in addition to hosting Man City’s porous defence on Boxing Day.

However, having limped off this afternoon, though, his fitness will need to be monitored ahead of a busy December.

Emre Can
Handed a place in our Spot the Differentials article, the German continued his impressive form with a goal and assist this afternoon.

Can has now served up three strikes and an assist in the last five Gameweeks, yet, despite coming in at a mere 4.9 in FPL, sat in less than 2% of squads prior to the weekend.

Although Adam Lallana returned to action off the bench, Can’s contribution suggests that he’s likely to retain his starting berth ahead of Georginio Wijnaldum – the German has now started each of the last seven Gameweeks.

Divock Origi
It’s three goals in as many matches for the Liverpool frontman after a superbly taken strike in the Reds’ surprise loss at Bournemouth.

After emerging from the bench to notch against Sunderland last week, Origi has been rewarded with back-to-back starts in all competitions and also netted in the midweek cup win over Leeds United.

With Coutinho sidelined for a number of weeks, the Belgian’s form may well have cemented him a place in Jurgen Klopp’s XI for the time being.

Given that Mane is set to depart for the Africa Cup of Nations next month, Origi – at just 6.5 in FPL – will be pushing to retain that starting place over the next couple of months, although Daniel Sturridge, once fit, will clearly be a factor.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic
Capitalising on an error by Maarten Stekelenburg, the United frontman took his tally to six goals in as many matches across all competitions.

Having netted four times in the first 10 Gameweeks, Ibrahimovic has finally started to translate the underlying numbers into Fantasy returns, firing four goals in his subsequent three league outings.

With the need for a Sergio Aguero replacement a priority, United’s schedule from Gameweek 16 hands them seven very favourable fixtures (cpl, wba, SUN, MID, whu, sto, HUL) in the following eight to promote the Swede’s appeal.

Considering that Juan Mata dropped to the bench despite the absence of the suspended Wayne Rooney, Ibra looks the safest bet for those backing Jose Mourinho’s men to flourish.

Nathan Ake
A late winner against Liverpool made it two goals in three appearances since being handed a first start in Gameweek 12.

Ake’s recent displays hand Eddie Howe a real headache once he has a full quota of defenders to choose from – with Charlie Daniels ruled out again today, Adam Smith and Simon Francis were fielded as the full-backs.

Should Ake continue in the first XI, a price of 4.2 in FPL would certainly boost his appeal as one of the cheapest active defenders available.

Ryan Fraser
A 15-point return from a 36 minute appearance from the bench, Fraser turned today’s game for Bournemouth. Priced at 4.9 in the FPL, it remains to be seen if the young scot can now cement a starting role for Eddie Howe’s men to become a factor in our season.

Fraser replaced former Fantasy target Junior Stanislas who hobbled off with a knee injury, labelled as “serious” by the Cherries boss according to early reports.

In Decline

Roberto Firmino
Having recovered from a calf complaint, the Brazilian was shifted onto the left flank to accommodate Origi through the middle.

Firmino’s failure to play a part in any of Liverpool’s three goals proved hugely frustrating for his 18% FPL owners – a run of three successive blanks is his longest of the season.

With cash freed up by the Sergio Aguero suspension, many are looking for a way to own both Alexis Sanchez and Eden Hazard in the centre of the park and Firmino could well be earmarked as a potential fall guy.

Nonetheless, Liverpool’s upcoming schedule suggests that getting rid at this point still has the potential to backfire.

Liverpool’s Defence
Back-to-back clean sheets against Southampton and Sunderland had suggested that Liverpool’s rearguard may finally be worth considering.

The loss of Joel Matip proved costly, though, as Klopp’s side fell apart in the final half-hour against the Cherries.

Incredibly, Liverpool have conceded nine times in the three matches that the Cameroon international has missed – they’ve shipped the same number of goals in the 11 league matches with Matip on board.

If our faith in the likes of Nathaniel Clyne and Dejan Lovren is to be rewarded, the Reds’ summer signing needs to shrug off his ankle injury as soon as possible.

Romelu Lukaku
The Belgian’s alarming slump in form shows little sign of abating – he failed to produce a single attempt against United earlier today.

Adding injury to insult, he now looks to have falling down the penalty pecking order after Leighton Baines stepped up to slot home a spot-kick and seal a 1-1 stalemate.

Second only to Philippe Coutinho for transfers out last week, Lukaku, with one goal in six now, has continued to shed owners since the weekend deadline – he faces clashes with Arsenal and Liverpool in the next three.

Phil Jagielka and Ross Barkley
The pair dropped to the bench as Ronald Koeman attempted to address a dire run of form that had harvested one win in Everton’s previous eight matches.

After starting each of the first nine, Jagielka has omitted from the starting XI in two of the last five, with his role as a regular now looking in question under the Dutchman.

Barkley had started all but one of the first 13 Gameweeks but failed to earn pitch time off the bench as the Toffees looked to chase the match, with Koeman instead turning to Gerard Deulofeu and Enner Valencia as substitutes.

With the upcoming Christmas period all about ensuring our benches are well-stocked, the Toffees exodus looks set to expand beyond just Lukaku.

Owners of Seamus Coleman and Yannick Bolasie will also be mulling over their options after both picked up knocks and were forced off.

How long people hold on to Firmino for is going to be as decisive as how long people held on to Ibra for around the Stoke game.

Nah, Ibra's price tag meant that keeping him had a massive effect on the rest of your team. Firmino is just one of many mid price options.

It is clearly not going to be. Hazard went 3 without scoring points earlier in the season.

It would be madness to shift Firmino before a home game against West Ham, unless it is to get Sanchez or Hazard in. Do you really expect players to perform well every game and go without scoring lapses?

There is not one player who will manage that.

He definitely won't drop 3 times but with the Liverpool mf being such a lotter, Can being a solid budget option in the last r weeks, Lallana having a quality real life season, Coutinho being out, you could see why some would move on or move to the cheaper option.

Their first two goals were poor GK errors. The fluent attack we have come to enjoy was nowhere to be seen. Firm looked disinterested wide on the left and only rarely went forward or inside.
Even when Lallana came on he was inconsequential.

Bournemouth had let 6 goals in 6 home games before today. West Ham let in 9 in the league and cup in the last 5 days. Liverpool have scored the second most home goals in the league (From one less game than leaders Chelski), and only three teams have conceded more away from home than West Ham.

Yeah, drop Firmino, the six highest midfield scorer in the game, because he had a poor performance and has blanked in three. Hazard blanked in 3 earlier in the season and underwhelmed too.

You guys just don't get it.
          He's playing in a different position/role.
          Their best player is injured.
Their best creative player is coming back from injury.
Their defense is in disarray meaning their wingers have to play deeper.

Once again, did you watch tonight?

            I don't think you get it -

West Ham are in disarray - their confidence is gone, and they have an injury crisis. Liverpool play West Ham next week.
Liverpool, with all those apparent issues, scored three goals away to one of the toughest home defences in the division.
Firmino has scored well for Liverpool from deeper positions, and was superb in Germany too in a midfield role. He naturally peels off deeper even when in a central striking position.
The defence in disarray comment is just absurd - They are missing one central defender and there is no evidence the wingers are playing deep.

            Bizzare.

Are you capable of replying to any of my points? I'm guessing no.

And yes I did watch the game. I've also watched better players play badly, and better teams play badly too.

Is that simple enough for you to understand?

West Ham get their three best defenders back from injury/suspension next week.
Already said the first two goals last night were Boruc's fault as did the commentators and 11000 home fans.
What Firm has done in the past is great - I have owned him since GW1. That is now irrelavent though as circumstances have changed dramatically.
The Pool defense has been poor all season, evidence tonight is that Firm was required back repeatedly on the left and eventually made a tackle in the defensive box that most pundits believed should have been a penalty.

Have you seen his heat map or do I need to post that as well?

Is that enough because I don't want you to get more embarrassed on this forum.

Are you capable of looking at a goals for column and a goals against?
Are you aware that Matip is likely back for this weekend (As likely as the West Ham defenders). You are aware, I'm sure, of the difference in Liverpool's defence with Matip?
Liverpool's wide midfielders habitually tackle back - today wasn't any different. Have you watched any other games this season?
                    How is the past irrelevant?

I like the idea of you speaking for 11,000 home fans - it is wonderful. It is great watching someone foolishly thrust their subjectivity about - a bit like the Borat scene in the china shop. Except he was self-conscious. Boruc was not to blame for both goals - stop being absurd. And maybe Adrian/Randolph will make mistakes?

Seriously, learn how to make an argument.

Yes, I have watched most games this season.
The past is irrelevant for Bobby as he's now playing in a different role.
My assessment on the fault of the first two goals was based on expert analysis and home crowd response - I'm not sure if you went to school or not but you better check the definition of subjective!

                        hahahaa. Unbelievable.
Firstly - subjectivity is used correctly. Check out the definition using the OED - it has various meaning, relating to bias (consciousness and unconscious), and it has certain philosophical conceptions. Thanks for your concern about my schooling - Fortunately my PHD in postcolonial literature allows me to post on these forums and understand words (generally). Although it is a struggle getting to grips with some of your absurdly simplistic opinions. And again - congratulations - these experts cannot be wrong can they? or share different opinions? Are you really this short sighted, or is this a parody of a talksport listener?

Again - go back a few steps... you understand that Firmino hasn't only played up front don't you? There is this league called the Bundesliga that Firmino once played in and a Brazilian national team to boot. Unbelievably, Firmino has also played elsewhere for Liverpool. Want to hear a really incredible thing? Firmino has played in various attacking midfield positions for longer than he has played up front. Strange eh?

Incidentally, top 100 in dream team in the summer. Multiple top 50 finishes in Sky, and in the telegraph season long and summer games. Big prize wins in Mondogoal, Draftkings, Fanduel, Playon, Fanager, Sun, Dream Team, the Mirror etc etc (finished fifth in the final season of their official game) and lesser prizes too.

I'm making a fool of myself...you are remarkable.

Again - 'no one on here'...
Do you understand how stupid you sound? No one on here is interested in the Sky game? It's strange because there are an awful lot of people in the Fantasy football scout mini league..and the last two winners have been from FFS. I also know, for sure, that other players on here play other games. Do you understand what homogenisation means? Do you understand why it is wrong?

It might come as a massive surprise to you...but I dont like the official FPL game. I think there are better games out there that I prefer spending my time on. I don't like the bonus points system, nor the flawed price change structure. I dont like the chips. I can be a good fantasy football player, and talk on these forums, without caring for FPL. Believe it or not, I'm not alone. My interest is in other games in which I've been consistently successfully in. As you may have to. And guess what - maybe a new poster will playing FPL for the first season in his or her career, and his or her opinion will carry weight too. The worth of it will be based on logic.

You started by throwing insults - making a simplistic argument predicated on assumed facts based on a flawed notion of your own superiority. Various posters on here (the majority) during the last couple of hours have argued in favour of keeping Firmino ahead of a home game against a West Ham side in disarray (At least Hazard or Sanchez come in for him anyhow). You've not offered anything sensible in opposition. You've tried insulting me for playing different games, ignoring that this site specifically targets various games and individuals. You've asked several times whether me and others have watched games. Maybe there is one more thing you should ask yourself -

                    Maybe you are wrong?

    1 FT 0.0 ITB

    Cech Pickford
    Morgan Koscielny Holebas Cedric Amat
    Hazard Siggy Firmino Sanchez Philips
    Costa Defoe Anibeche

My defence really needs a makeover and I don't know what to do with Firmino. What should my plan be for GW14? Willing to do -4 for sure.

He has a decent fixture this week and Leicester are poor at the back this year. Also, didn't see that you also had Cech and I agree with those above that Kosc could go and free up funds. Nevertheless, they also have a plum fixture so I'd wait a week and save the FT.

    Going:

    Ibra to Kane
    Austin to Costa
    Firminho to Walters
    McAulay to Cedric

For -12 to take advantage of others having to hit and spending some of this week's ton now I'm in the top 10K.

    Thoughts?

Just to weigh in on Sanchez's essential status debate.

I scored 97, no hits or chips this week and don't own him. This is significantly more than my chum who owned and captained him. Ergo, he's not essential.

Absolutely, just pointing out even when Sanchez is at his explosive best, and captained, it still doesn't mean you necessarily suffer by not owning.

His consistency is key agreed, but food for thought. Many many very decent options to mitigate for not having him in my view.

A lot of players scored big this week. It's Sanchez's combination of consistency and explosivity that pushes him towards that essential status.

Er, I scored 81, no hits without Costa, your point?

Players are not essential because of what you may have scored, they are essential because of what they can and will score.

      1. WDT
        • 12 Years

I disagree. The fact that you've scored highly, and a lot higher than many, without Costa this week, goes some way to demonstrating Costa isn't essential. This was my argument for Sanchez.

Whether you scored well or not is irrelevant I think - It is Sanchez's score that matters, and the clear benefit for owners over non-owners. If you had him and captained, then you would have likely scored even higher.

He is comfortably the highest points scorer in the game, is playing up front, and is less of a drop risk than City options. With Aguero's injury, I see little reason to avoid a transfer for non-owners.

Players can score a lot and still not be essential. Other factors come into play too like value, ownership and whether you'd captain them.

Appears I've enraged the masses. I do see that it is easier to, I'm merely explaining as I thought it might be food for thought, that you can score highly without him, even when he's at his most fearsome.

Yep but you're not trying to score high points in one week. You're trying to score high points over a series of weeks.

Sanchez + cheap option could be outscored by mid priced options X and Y over a five week period, even if Sanchez scores more than either X or Y and kills them in a single week where he gets a hat trick. As such, being a really good option on his own doesn't make him essential.

The debate the should not be about whether Sanchez is essential, but about
        1) whether anyone is essential
        2) whether FFS members take a relative meaning of essential.

But these points are pointless of course - The real question is whether you need Sanchez in your team or not.

        And you do.
Look at his total score, and compare it to the others. Remember that the captaincy option doubles the benefit. Factor in the rotation risk and the out of position bonus. He is the most important player in the game at the moment.

But with staying he did get a massive increase in wages, champions league football, and a guaranteed starting spot, not bad reasons to stay. Competition at arsenal at his age (30 in January) may have relegated him to a bit part / squad player for the last 3-4 years of his career. This way he goes out as a Leicester legend, even if he only gets 10-12 league goals per year till 33/34 rather than the 20+ he delivered last season. Can understand the reason for staying.

Don't personally agree with that move - Austin still scores the majority of Southampton's goals, and Holebas plays out of position and has some decent fixtures. Alonso may also be rotated over the christmas period, whereas I doubt Austin will. I'd focus on other areas of your team.

I've got him. And yeah, I'd take a hit if I were you to get him. Just out of those 3 I like A.

You want to get Firmino moving to Sanchez at some point, that's for sure. I think the best time to do this though would be for GW18, as Firmino still has some decent fixtures coming up in the next 3 and Arsenal play everton and city away GW16 and 17 - neither of which I think Sanchez will haul in.

Thanks for reply, very helpful! Another argument for holding is that I'll not captain him for the next 3 weeks. On the other side many will captain him though

what do you guys think of Son with Utd(A) Hull(H) Bur(H)? Rotation Risk? Can get in for -4 hit or Free for GW16.

Depends on Lamelas fitness. I'd rather have Eriksen or Alli

wait for next week. Good shout then imo. Just check when Lamela is back, can't remember how long he's out for. I wouldn't get him if Lamela is back in the game

Could be rotated with Lamela in the midweek game week coming up but will definitely play at least one of the two hugely favorable fixtures of Hull and Burnley and home. I think he's worth a punt.

    Which to prioritise?

    A) getting in Costa (requires upgrading Austin at home to Boro)
    B) upgrading Allen up to £9m
    C) save transfer and re-asses after next GW

    Heaton (Pickford)
    Alonso Clyne PVA (Evans Amat)
    Sanchez Hazard Firmino Siggy (Allen)
    Kane Austin Anichebe

      A. Surprised you aint got Costa. Suppose his 4 cards been putting many off for weeks now.

Cheers all, not seen how well Boro do away from home but Soton have been solid at home. Think it's time to bite the bullet on Costa, just been waiting on that illusion 5th yellow too long

I'd save your transfer - Costa is still one booking away from a suspension after all, and Austin has some nice fixtures so I wouldn't be too quick to get rid of him. If you were to make a transfer I'd do Allen -> Eriksen, but as spurs play man u away next gameweek that could definitely wait until the gameweek after.

Lol.costa has been on one booking away from suspension for almost 2 months now and has racked up more than 60 pts.

Any NFL fans/betting enthusiasts on? I'm waiting for Antonio Brown first TD for over 800 quid in a 3 pound treble. A safety doesn't count towards a TD does it? Pretty sure it doesn't but worried still.

No, your bet should still be alive. If it was 'first score', you would have lost the bet.

Sanchez/Defoe/Cedric in for Gundogan/Kun/Fuchs for -8 felt damned good.

Which combo to fill the blanks?
        A) Foster, Ward, Phillips, Anichebe
        B) Grant, Ake, DeRoon, Austin

        Pickford X
        Alonso Cedric Amat Nyom X
        Haz Sanch Erik Siggy X
        Costa Kane X
        £0 bank

Looks to be a question of Austin vs Anichebe (with the latter freeing funds for more security against rotation)
