The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 21

Fact or fiction, Friday night’s media circus surrounding Diego Costa was always going to impact on our Gameweek.

Over 374,000 Fantasy Premier League managers moved to show the Spaniard the door in the last 24-hours as reports stated that Costa had been “dropped” for Chelsea’s trip to Leicester City.

Of those transfers, more than 124,000 shifted to Olivier Giroud but, more significantly, just over 76,000 were to look to Spurs’ Harry Kane as their replacement.

Despite Giroud finding the net for the fourth successive Gameweek, Kane’s hat-trick and return of 17 points stole the headlines and provided an instant reward for those who had reacted to the Costa kerfuffle.

Another 32,000 have already pulled the plug on Costa since the passing of today’s deadline, seemingly consigning the striker to a term of absence and dismissing the prospect of Chelsea’s next fixture with Hull City at the Bridge.

It’s not clear if Costa will be a factor in that match.

Antonio Conte was quick to dispel the talk of a dispute or “bust-up”, citing a back problem as the cause of Costa’s omission. The striker will now apparently be assessed ahead of Gameweek 22, as the Blues work to diffuse talk of their player being unsettled.

That will be no easy task.

Ironically, even without their leading scorer, Chelsea were to breeze past the Foxes in third gear, with Marcos Alonso, another Fantasy asset subject to recent media reports, providing an unexpected brace and 21 points to outperform even Kane’s haul.

With Nathan Ake’s recall, there was talk and even reports that Alonso’s status in the Chelsea line-up was at risk.

The Standard reported “growing injury concerns” and, while Alonso’s start at the King Power was never seriously questioned, there were new doubts surrounding the Spaniard’s long-term prospects following Ake’s return.

Confidence was knocked. More than 78,000 FPL managers moved Alonso out of their squads over the past two Gameweeks, reacting to the four goals conceded but also perhaps the reports of Alonso’s “problem”.

Post-match, Alonso himself confirmed that there was some truth in the chatter but, with his emphatic performance, he had underlined both his present condition and importance to Chelsea and Fantasy managers.

The noise and bluster surrounding these two prize assets has been difficult to shut-out – in Costa’s case, it will inevitably continue.

The striker’s remaining owners will now be forced to strap themselves in for a prolonged period of uncertainty, with the tempting Gameweek 22 fixture providing an alluring reason to sit it out.

Meanwhile, those holding Alonso will be strengthening their grip.

Whatever the “pain” recently felt by the wing-back, it likely pales in significance next to the agony now being felt by those who sold him over the last two Gameweeks.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Not sure what I want from Ibrahimovic as a non captainer today. I guess a good score, it due to ownership it could be one of those days where a quiet performance is better.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Spurs trio

Having a Spurs asset looks vital given their current form in both defence and attack. But which one?

Or is doubling, or even trebling up best.

Which Spurs players do you favour?

The goal threat of Rose in defence?

    Walker's assist potential?

Eriksen's all round dominance of Fantasy point metrics?

    Ali's eye for the net?

Kane's explosiveness as a captaincy option?

I'm already on the triple up of Rose, Eriksen and Alli.

If I were picking today, I'd go Rose, Eriksen, Kane given the paucity of strikers up front who aren't injured and/or eyeing up a Chinese takeaway.

Kane and one of the full backs presently.

Lamela back imminently and we don't know if that'll effect the team shape, certainly it'll mean Eriksen will be sharing dead balls.

Currently have Alli/Eriksen. Contemplating bringing in Rose (or Walker) this week for their run.

I won't be able to bring in Kane and unfortunately was 0.1 short for a swap for Costa which burnt. Kane could explode more with their run of fixtures and will definitely be another captain choice.

Brought in Ali last week primarily for the greater goal return although I do concede Eriksen is probably the better bet for returns.

I'm not so sure on a Spuds defender. Rose is close to a two game ban so it pointless getting him and tbh, Alonso covers all the bases.

Just wishes the ubers would show some returns from the likes of Jones et al although McAwful has been good with the goals.

I have Rose, Alli and Kane and won't be changing.

Kane a must. He's got 20 goals in him every season, he's on penalties and a great captain option.

Alli/Eriksen really is a toss up. Eriksen much better at home and loves to assist, but Alli is always popping up with a goal. Very little in it, but I think Alli will outscore Eriksen over the rest of the season.

Rose/Walker again is tight, but having watched Spurs play, Rose is far more dangerous. Having said that, though, Walker always finds a way and loves the BAPS.
I think a defender is a must as it's basically insurance against a blank. They also offer outstanding value.

I have Rose, Alli and Kane and won't be changing.

I seem to have hit the sweet spot owning both Erik and Kane for a while now.

I am very tempted by Rose, but with owning Alonso and wanting Baines, Rose May be a luxury too far. Will need some thought.

I may just stick with 2 Spurs as this gives more flexibility to jump on form from other players from other teams, and as Hurrikane said, there are other attacking defenders doing the business.

Having finally gone 3-5-2, I could accommodate both Alli and Erik, but having both and Kane feels like limiting my potential, especially when Spurs go quiet in a given week. So it's gonna be Erik, Kane and maybe Rose.

Walker: more assist potential than Rose. Less yellow cards.

Eriksen: in his best form for a long time. Set pieces. Assists.

Kane: pretty much fixture proof. In great form. When he scores he normally goes on a run.

I've had Walker & Eriksen some time & like many, dumped Kane after blanking the 2 easier home fixtures in Dec. I've shuffled squad over a few weeks to get Costa in post suspension, only to draft Giroud post China/back-gate.
I'm reluctant to mess about with with my main front 2 anymore (have Ibra) until we know more on Costa-gate, Giroud's ankle (...and Kane apologies for GWs 16 and 17)

I sold Williams for Toby back in GW6 and have no plans to change. Secure starter and can get his share from set plays. Also have Kane paired up with Ibra.

I did consider selling Kane and Hazard for Costa and Eriksen/Alli as this works out 2.0m cheaper but I'm not so sure now! If Costa is off then Kane makes sense. I also drafted in Pedro for a hit yesterday for Walcott and at 6.9m he appears a snip for the double up which leaves me tight for a Spurs mid. I may yet treble on Spurs by swapping our Firmino. Not this week though as I'll be rolling my transfer over after doing three last week.

I've got Alderweireld, and obviously Rose and Walker are proving better picks, but it never seems worth a transfer or even a hit to move sideways. Maybe i'll rue that.

Probably more pressing for me to get Eriksen or Alli.
Personally think Kane is an excellent asset but not necessarily any better than others in his price range. Eriksen/Alli offering the kind of vale that Liverpool midfielders did earlier in the season.

So if Lukaku has a promising game against City I think I'll bring him in for their run of fixtures to replace Costa. If not, it could be Defoe, but I think Trollkaku has a better chance with their string of favourable fixtures.

Also, looking at Brunt > Rose. He is so far up the pitch when Spurs are attacking, it's crazy not to have him.

What do you lads think of my proposed team (non-WC) heading into GW22 for a -4.

    Alonso Rose Baines

    Foster (pickford)
Baines Alonso Brunt (Amat & Cedric)
Alexis Lallana Hazard Allen (de roon)
    Ibra Kane Rondon

What do i do with 1 FT? and 1.0m itb

my main concerns are the 3 WB players, and no Alli -- help please 🙂

Made some fantastic moves last GW that I doubt anyone can beat.

    Costa > Giroud,
(Due to uncertainty Costa and form)
    Antonio > Stan
(Looked good fixtures for a 3-week punt, Ant not doing much in recent weeks, and the Payet circus)
    Lovren > Daniels
    Fixtures more favorable

    All three epic fails!

3 assist and 3 baps from Antonio yesterday. The payer circus will help him go forward even more I would have thought

Ake -> Nyom or Chamber ?

Should i take risk on Nyom given the kind fixtures for WBA?

Insane good fixtures next 5 at least. Baines/Coleman + Williams I can get Holebas + Ake + 1.4m

Had a killer week with Kane (C) and Alonso in my team!

Anybody know why Ake wasn't even on the bench against Leicester?

    Grant
    Valencia, Friend, Alonso
    Hazard, Phillips, Lallana, Snodgrass, Sanchez
    Aguero, Kane

    Pickford, Barnes, Ake, Amat

I know it's a bit early and want make any changes until GW has finished, but worth a hit to get Coutinho in for Lallana?

Also, bench is very week so any tips on other changes are welcome!

    Thanks!
