The ScoutCast – Episode 211 – Beleaguered

It’s quite ironic that, in an episode that focuses on our experience and strategies of mini-league management, my long-term rival on that score goes awol.

Granville is waylaid by “homework” and misses out, but Luke crashes in mid-cast to join Jonty, Andy and myself as we deliver an 80-minute episode, which includes our dubious insights on navigating a team to mini-league glory – mind games and all.

Once again guided by your community questions, we take on the Diego Costa fall-out, the rising stock of Spurs on form and Everton on fixtures, while finding time to wade in on the demise of former darling Sergio Aguero under the stewardship of Pep Guardiola.

This episode of the ScoutCast was first beamed live via our YouTube channel on Tuesday night. Be sure to subscribe to get notice of future live episodes.

What to do with this? 1 FT 2.2m ITB. Thinking of saving this week.

    Hennessey
    Baines - Luiz - Jones
    Phillips - Hazard - Sanchez(c) - Pogba
    Giroud - Ibra - Rondon

Grant - McAuley - De Roon - Holgate

Would definitely try and play McAuley, perhaps even before Pogba, although not ideal.

      Maybe over Jones?

Otherwise you can certainly save FT, unless Pogba > Coutinho?, Nah, just save and use 2 x FTs to invest that 2.2 ITB....

So I want to bring in an Everton player (At least 1) Lukaku and Baines are who I'm looking at..

    Foster (Jaku)

Bellerin Holebas Alonso (Amat, Der Hoooorn)

    Hazard Sanchez Dele Lallana Phillips

    Aguero Benteke (Anichebe)

With the team above to bring in Lukaku I have to do the following:

    Hazard - Stainislas
    Anichebe - Lukaku

For Baines it could be as simple as Bellerin to Baines (Maybe using the spare cash to upgrade lallana to coutinho, by when coutinho should be up to speed)

      Wouldn't do those transfers honestly
If you take out Anichebe for Lukaku you are effectively moving to a 3-4-3 . Are you ok with that?

Since you have two benched defenders who have zero points potential , I'm guessing that applies to your midfield as well, with a 3-4-3 you will have to rotate phillips and Stanislas.
And Benteke isn't in great form and you won't know what to do with him if he blanks.
All sorts of issues are gonna heat up if you pull this I think.
Not too sure but this is my hypothesis.

Can't have them all, I would avoid Stanislas if your playing 3-4-3 as his next two games were the main attraction.
Instead I would do hazard to bench fodder and get a strong front three without Benteke and Aguero?

Cheers for the Beast reply Yaya!

The problem I'm having is my gut is saying Lukaku is going to go a bit nuts over the next few fixtures! I thought about the 343 and whether I'd be comfortable, truth be told I don't mind what formation I play as long as I can manage to get a team with good players. Hoping Benteke can spark some form up after his double in the Cup, he has the fixtures to do so.

As I don't want to take Hazard out this week I think save is a good option and see where we are after the weekend. Baines also looks attractive and it allows me to either upgrade Lallana to Coutinho or get a 4th defender in who plays.

What I meant was hazard to bench fodder next week.
Cheers if you like having a bit of rotation then I reckon your plan sounds fine, Stanislas and Phillips should rotate really well.
Since your fourth and fifth defenders were that bad I thought you were a strict dictator for avoiding rotation. Wrong to assume that?

I don't mind a bit of rotation, usually have an 8 up top I can rotate and a 4th cheap defender too but haven't had a chance to change Van Der hoorn as yet.

            How's your team looking?

Ignore the love and make your decision based on how city/kun look. Assess this week vs Spurs and possibly ditch if there's no improvement. Nevertheless good fixtures coming for Aguero after Spurs.

      2. PvA
        • 7 Years
        7 years, 3 months ago

If I was to take Aguero out it would be for a -4. And I don't see the point in getting Aguero in as part of a -4 just to take him out 1 week later while he is still fit.
After Spurs, City have 2 really good fixtures where Aguero is a captain choice - no City haven't been great - but Aguero is still one of the top scorers in the league despite missing many games.
Worth keeping Aguero if you have him. We'll see how he does on the weekend though.

A big haul next week and you will hear a lot drafting him in.
      And rightly so.
Very frustrating to own him so better to have a bit of caution. This new formation is the only reason he is playing much better IMO, he is almost a second striker in this. Koeman s decision Vs palace now will tell a lot of things.

    Foster
    Cedric / Jones / Lovren
    Sanchez / Firminho / Lallana / Phillips
    Giroud / Defoe / Ibra

Bench is: Given / Capoue / Amat / Prodl

But it is McCauley's upside that I am looking at. Nobody has the same attacking potential under 5m that I can find plus his fixtures are great.

I agree he has great attacking potential, as does Brunt. Having 50% of my defence from a team that very rarely gets a cs isn't great though. Baines not an option, or Daniels?

Daniels is too expensive. I get that doubling up is risky but I take players in isloation. I.e. which defender (has to have attacking potential) is most likely to gain the highest number of clean sheets and potantially get some attacking points for £4.9m or less?

WBA 3 CSs in 21 games. It's one of the enigmas of the season.

Question is whether that's a statistical aberration or a true reflection of their potential over the last 17 games.

        1. justmatt
          • 8 Years
          7 years, 3 months ago

I think they're playing more attacking and as a result conceed more, saw an interview with some of their players before Spurs matching saying the same thing.

          1. Ruth_NZ
            • 9 Years

That is a possible explanation. Pulis has new, foreign owners to satisfy. They probably don't much like "1-0 to the Albion".

I heard a recent interview with Darren Fletcher. He said that the manager still concentrates as much on clean sheets as ever. And Pulis does have a great track record on clean sheets.

3 in 21 is incredibly low, either way. That's on track for 5.42 (5 or 6) clean sheets over the season 😕 Only 2 teams have managed less than 6 clean sheets in the last 3 years: Fulham in 2013/14 and Norwich 2015/16.

That is the question! They have only conceded 1 goal on so many matches. They got hammered twice 4-0 by Spurs and Man City.

They have only conceded twice (United, Everton, Liverpool, West Ham they beat 4-2). 15 times they have conceded once.

To me it looks like they are pretty damned close to more clean sheets. When they play a non-top 7 team the most they have conceded is 1 goal (apart from thr West Ham game).

          1. Ruth_NZ
            • 9 Years

I have had Foster and Evans all season. The number of times I have had a double clean sheet after 75 minutes only to see it go down to a late goal... Well, maybe it's just that those occasions have stuck in my mind.

Either way, WBA have been frustrating. Because you have to think that they should have had more CSs than they have actually managed. 🙁

Defoe out maybe, but on the other hand WBA has been leaking so hold on.

    Foster
    Alonso, Jones, A Smith
    Sanchez, Lallana, Antonio, Alli
    Rondon, Ibra, Giroud

    Jaku, Evans, DeRoon, Amat

    a) save ft
    b) Antonio -> Stanislas
    c) A Smith -> Baines/Rose/Walker
    d) b + c for a hit

I am planning to get rid of Antonio and Smith, but both have a decent fixture this gw I think.

Can you downgrade Smith or Evans and upgrade Antonio to Eriksen or Coutinho?

I could, but I'm actually looking up for strengthening up the defense towards the end of the season. Thus I think I need Spurs/Everton coverage to have at least 2 premium defenders each week. Jones will be a subject to rotation once Bailly is back.

Probably going to hold still this week. But I'm 99 % sure Antonio won't deliver.

        I want a defender for max. 4.9

current defense Holebas Alonso McAuley Kone** Amat*

        think united's fixtures are ok.

I think Bailly is more of a threat to Rojo than Jones
Mou prefers to play with one left footer and one right footer

See above, I have Evans and Smith. Probably going to field Smith as last time Evans started with a minor injury he was subbed off after 20 mins or so. Plus I'm afraid Defoe will get that one penalty.

Pickford to Jaku is just good sense. Gain 0.2 and they'll be similar value soon.

Not sure about Costa though, truth is no one knows.

    Grant (Heaton)
    Alonso Daniels Brunt (Gibson, Amat)
    Alli Özil Sán©hez Phillips (Carrick)
    Kane Giroud Lukaku

1FT, 1.7m in the bank. I think I'm safe to save if we don't get some bad news today. Would you play Gibson ahead of anyone? Boro is solid at home.

Giroud or Ozil to Costa or Hazard for me. Triple Arsenal and no Chelsea or Liverpool attackers is risky.

Any news on today's pressers, Ozil?

Who to bench out of this lot?

    A) Chambers (WHU)
    B) Jones (Sto)
    C) Siggy (Liv)

On A at the moment but it feels weird given boro's defensive form.

With that strong strike force and a relatively low team value you need to have a bench fodder in midfield now like Hojberg, carrick or de roon.
Use that money to help your defense , it could use a Brunt or Rose.

Was planning to do the same. That is why I am keeping my ft for this week intact. Depending on who among stan, philips, pog perform, I want to do sterling to coutinho or pog to coutinho and upgrade a defender. Thanks.

Who's the best Ake replacement? Probably a bench warmer most weeks so thinking Friend because he's cheapest but Funes Mori is tempting if he's fairly nailed...

    A - Friend
    B - Chambers
    C - Funes Mori
