Scout Report – Manolo Gabbiadini

After bringing in back-up goalkeeper Mouez Hassen earlier on deadline day, Southampton then tied up their main piece of business, acquiring Napoli forward Manolo Gabbiadini for a club-record fee believed to be worth around £15 million.

The 25-year-old Italian international signed a four-and-a-half-year contract and, according to Claude Puel earlier today, could be handed a debut in Saturday’s home clash against West Ham United.

Speaking to the club’s official website, the Saints manager revealed his happiness at being able to add a striker to his squad, particularly given the continued absence of the injured Charlie Austin:

“Manolo is a striker and after the injury of Charlie Austin it was important to give an opportunity for the squad and to try to make progress and to give all the possibilities in the squad. He will be important I think but it’s the first time he comes into the Premier League, another country, another squad, and it will be important to stay with patience at the beginning.
He’s a good player, a good striker and he will bring good intention and good opportunities for the future.”

The History

Gabbiadini began his professional career at Atalanta, and made his Serie A debut as a substitute against Parma in March 2010.

He then spent the 2010/11 campaign on loan at Serie B side Cittadella, registering five goals and four assists in 27 appearances, before returning to Atalanta ahead of the 2011/12 season.

It was during that campaign where Gabbiadini established himself as a regular in top-flight Italian football, making 23 appearances in total, yielding one goal and two assists.

His performances did enough to attract the attention of Juventus and, in the summer of 2012, he joined the Italian giants in a co-ownership agreement, only to immediately be sent out on loan to Bologna.

Gabbiadini continued to steadily enhance his reputation as he tallied six goals and two assists from 30 league outings, although in the summer of 2013, Sampdoria acquired 50% of his registration rights, which saw the player move to the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

He enjoyed a strong 2013/14 campaign, scoring eight goals and providing four assists in 34 matches, interestingly making the majority of his starts on the right wing.

After starting the 2014/15 season in red-hot form for Sampdoria, scoring seven goals in 13 matches, Gabbiadini completed his move to Napoli for a reported fee of €13 million.

He continued his good form, totalling eight goals and one assist in 20 outings during the second half of the 2014/15 season.

Gabbiadini has had limited first-team opportunities since Maurizio Sarri took over from Rafa Benitez in June 2015, though, managing just four league starts in 2015/16, and seven starts during the first half of this season.

He still bagged eight goals and three assists over that period, though, and has also gained plenty of Champions League and Europa League experience.

After representing Italy at U18 and U20 levels, Gabbiadini boasted an impressive record of 12 goals in 24 appearances for the U21s, before making his senior debut as a substitute against England in August 2012.

He’s struggled to establish himself in the senior setup, though, and has only made six appearances in total, yielding just a single goal.

The Prospects

Given that Austin is expected to remain out for the next month or two due to a shoulder injury, while Jay Rodriguez has missed the last two matches with an ankle problem, there should be an opportunity for Gabbiadini to immediately come into the starting XI.

Shane Long did score in Tuesday night’s 2-1 defeat to Swansea City, but that was just the second league goal of the season for the Republic of Ireland international.

After beginning the season with a midfield diamond and two forwards, Puel has over the last few months stuck fairly rigidly to a 4-3-3 formation.

The likes of Nathan Redmond, Dusan Tadic and Sofiane Boufal have generally operated in the wide positions, although Redmond has also played as the central striker, while youngster Josh Sims has impressed when given the opportunity.

While Gabbiadini played almost exclusively as a central striker for Napoli during the first half of this season, he has, as already alluded to, played plenty of football on the right wing, while he can also operate on the left and as a support striker.

His versatility provides Puel with plenty of options across the front three positions, something the Saints boss has been short of during large parts of this season due to injuries.

With Puel talking up Gabbiadini as a striker, though, it’s likely he’ll at first be given a chance to shine in the central role, particularly in the absence of Austin.

The 25-year-old possesses a cultured left foot, and has strong technical ability, while he’s also pretty dangerous in the air.

He could provide a nice compliment to the players already at Puel’s disposal, then, although given the significant outlay, his goal scoring record isn’t overly impressive.

That could be largely due to the fact he’s never spent an extended period of time as a regular starter, something which should change at St Mary’s.

Looking at his underlying statistics so far this season, he’s impressively averaged a goal attempt every 21.4 minutes, better than Austin (24.9), Rodriguez (28) and Long (32.5).

He hasn’t offered much in the way of creativity though, creating a chance every 257 minutes, inferior to Long (90.3), Austin (111.9) and Rodriguez (223.7).

The Italian, who spoke to compatriot and former Southampton striker Graziano Pelle before making the move to the south coast, has been priced at 6.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

That could represent decent value. then, potentially providing us with another viable option in the mid-price bracket.

But the fact that Southampton face a blank in Gameweek 26 due to their involvement in the EFL Cup final, and could also see their Gameweek 28 match against Man United need rescheduling, depending on the Red Devils’ progress in the FA Cup, means Saints players hold little appeal right now.

Obviously, the knock-on effect of those blanks means that Saints could well have a couple of double Gameweeks during the final months of the season, so their players could certainly return to our radars.

Having failed to really establish himself at one club during his career so far, there are some question marks surrounding how prolific Gabbiadini will be in the Premier League.

Their next couple of matches against West Ham United and Sunderland look ideal opportunities to take a look at the new boy and see whether he can adapt quickly to the English game and emerge as a possible Fantasy option.

Aguero owners, keeping or selling...crazy as it sounds I'm debating whether to give him the armband v Swans or get rid for Lukaku. Heads melted

I am in a similar dilemma. Kun has not done much in the last three games. Swans are a rejuvenated side of late plus Pep is unpredictable as he may start with Jesus so thinking of selling him for Lukaku (who has great fixtures).
Will take the call on Saturday.

    2 FT:
    Bank: 0.7

    Heaton
    Walker - Daniels - Alonso
    Sanchez - Eriksen - Coutinho - Phillips
    Giroud - Ibrahimovic - Benteke
Subs: Jakupovic, Ake, Evans and De Roon

    Any suggestions?
I want to get Sane or Jesus. Do you think there is a risk of rotation? What should I do?

I will also exchange Giroud. Whom shall I bring for him?

Thoughts on these changes (chasing in ML and overall rank is shot):

    Current team:
    Heaton, Jaku
    Brunt, Rose, Gibson, Holgate, Amat
    Hazard, Sanchez, Eriksen, Phillips, Stanislas
    Ibra, Kane, Crouch

Rose, Gibson, Hazard, Phillips, Stanislas, Crouch >> Alonso, Baines, Sterling, Zaha, T Carroll, A Carroll?

1 FT. 3.4 in bank. Originally had planned just to do Gray for Lukaku, but mini league players have City assets and faintly worried. Happy to make two transfers. Please help.

    Heaton/Valdes
    Alonso Brunt Holebas Holgate Ake
    Sanchez Hazard Siggy Pogba Carroll
    Kane Gray Rondon

    A. Pogba to KDB
    B. Gray to Lukaku
    C. Gray and Pogba out, Sterling and Lukaku in.
    D. Pogba and Ake out, Kevin and Williams in.

or summat else? Very grateful for responses.

Aguero owners - I read the 2 Hot Topic articles on him and I don't think they go the distance on whether he's worthy of ownership, differential or otherwise.

As a part-time Aguero owner with a big TV (I've kept enough cash itb to switch him in/out since his last red card offence) I feel that I've lost points for the likes of cheaper options like Giroud, Costa and others as I hitched my sled to the master of PL goal scoring. Pep however had other ideas ...

It's not the money for me anymore, it's more the fact that his very existence as the best striker in the league has been strangling my points supply line as I consider him the ultimate differential above the likes of Giroud or Costa.

Listening to Peps post-match interview when he talked of Sterling, Sane and Jesus, I thought, he has already ordained the future attack for his team - young talented lads who will run all day and provide a 3 string attack formation instead of the singular string which Aguero provides with support.

If your defense has 3 strikers to cover rather than 1, then it's a lot more difficult and THIS is where Pep bites Kun.

Lukaku is as good as he is. He's not as good as the best of the strikers. Just because they don't score one week doesn't make Lukaku equal to them - Football is played in 90 mins not before or after a game.

It's a long way off, but I have already started to think about dbl gameweek tactics.
Which type of positions are less prone to rotation, and therefore odds on to give dble points?

i guess its players more than positions, someone like ibra, defoe, sanchez should start both games

All I recall is do not downplay the DGWs from the "poor teams"

Usually non fantasy assets, CDM's. Milner is usually safe but its impossible to predict. Even centre-backs get rotated.

It varies, but I would definitely get in players that are nailed during blank/DGW season. Star men for the lesser clubs are always good options if they have DGWs - people like Siggy, Defoe, Ibra for example 😉

Safer to go for lukaku if you can afford it, just because he's guaranteed to play in 26 and 28. Out of those two i think Jesus is a great punt, though probably wont start this weekend.

Any ideas on what I should do?

    2 free transfers

    Current team is:

    Valdes Grant
    Alonso Cedric Baines Ake Amat

Phillips Sanchez Stanislas De Roon lallana

    Aguero Lukaku Ibra

Time to get rid of Aguero and upgrade a mid/def??

Do one transfer and save the other for shifting out a blank GW player. Aguero to Costa? Ake needs to go.

As much as you all hate giroud...
I wouldn't hate to have him a bit more in my squad, as long as he gets enough gametime.
Only concern is walcott, he'll be fighting for gametime against giroud, so I'm not sure whether keeping is a good idea or not.
I need to transfer giroud out by today if I don't want to take the price drop.. suggestions? I'll be getting tekkers or carroll in for giroud if I decide to get him out, since I already have lukaku.

    So giroud stay or out?

Please help me decide one way or another... got a big head to head this week to add to the pressure:

    1. Hazard+Amat > Siggy+Coleman

    2. Hazard+Amat > Mane+Baines

    3. Hazard+Carroll > Antonio/Miralles/Zaha+Lukaku

(Zaha leaves funds to do Amat > Coleman/Baines the week after)

    Heaton - Jaku
    Alonso - Walker - Evans - Pieters - Amat
    Sanchez - Eriksen - Hazard - Phillips - Capoue
    Kane - Zlatan - Carroll

Is Lukaku really a good option as a replacement for Giroud?

I'm certain that every season he's hyped up by the fixtures and almost always disappoints, bar a couple of times. What makes it any different this time?

He really can explode any minute. We all know his form is patchy. He's a 'set and forget' player who will accumulate points over the season.

      1. AdamJ91
        • 8 Years
        7 years, 3 months ago

I just think that so many people fall into the trap of hyping him up, expecting the goals to come and then don't.

I take your point about being explosive though but you could argue other strikers have that about them too.

        1. UnitedFan
          • 8 Years

True, but like I said, just get him into your team and leave him there. He's proven to score many goals each season. The problem is they come in unpredictable batches

Some advice from regular posters on the last article was to keep Stanislas AND bring in Sigurdsson so I'd have both for GW26 and 28. However, if I want to want to bring in Sigurdsson (which I do) then I can't see anyway of doing it except by selling Stanislas.

Current midfield: Sanchez, Alli, Phillips, Antonio, Stanislas.

What do you think lads and ladettes?

Doing Grant to Randolph and Ake to Robertson plus want to bringin in Sigurdsson

Just do then. Must go with yr own gut,
Selling Stanislas not a major decision ?
