The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 24

Cursed with a reputation of failing to deliver to form and fixture, while some have tried to dispel the myth, Romelu Lukaku chose today to slay it once and for all.

The stage was dressed and set for the Belgian.

With the fixture list driving his recruitment, there was a degree of forced faith in Lukaku.

Two blanks on the road had created an air of caution, but Everton’s home form was strong enough to offer real hope.

Bournemouth, as today’s visitors, were offering the biggest reason for optimism. Incredibly, Eddie Howe’s side arrived at Goodison Park having shipped 20 goals in their last ten outings, conceding three in six of those matches.

The script was meticulously scribed and, for once, Lukaku read and stuck to it perfectly.

It took him just 30 seconds to expose the Cherries frailties, ominously curling home a confident opener to tease the destruction that was to follow.

Bournemouth’s second half rally merely drew the sting from Everton, with Lukaku ending the match in riotous form.

Acquired by over 75,000 prior to today’s deadline, Lukaku boasted an ownership of 1.1 million FPL managers.

However, only 22% of those owners chose to back him with the captaincy, perhaps distracted by the lure of Zlatan Ibrahimovic or Harry Kane, having previously been stung by the Everton striker.

However, announcing himself this season with a hat-trick on Wearside, Lukaku chose Bournemouth as his next major victims and bullied them with a similar display of pace, power and finishing.

His 21-points ranks second only to Alexis Sanchez’ fabled London Stadium haul – Lukaku’s return today is the top individual score by any FPL forward.

With the fixtures remaining kind and with Gameweeks 26 and 28 booked in, his ownership and price will likely rocket.

However, while we can lavish praise his way this evening, we should not forget the frustration he can cause.

Stalling badly from Gameweek 11, Lukaku appeared stuck in a rut and unable to drag Everton from their Autumnal malaise.

But something clicked thereafter – perhaps the new arrivals on Merseyside, perhaps Ronald Koeman’s new formation – but the smile returned, and the energy and hunger came with it.

Incredibly, he now leads the Golden Boot race. Involved in 51% of Everton’s goals, boasting an almost identical points per match tally as both Diego Costa and Ibrahimovic and second only to Jermain Defoe for points per million value, the case for Lukaku is compelling.

Was there ever any doubts? Of course, but at least for tonight, we will conveniently forget the past.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I need two more GW26 players

    Foster (Jak)
    Baines, Alonso, KOS, (JONES, Amat)
    Alli, Courinho, Caroll, (SANCHEZ)
    Lukaku, Gray (IBRA)

    1ft 0.8 ITB

    What's my best option guy's

    A) Amat and Ibra to Coleman and Costa
    B) Amat and Kos to Coleman and Brunt

with A i'd captain Costa in GW26 (SWA) and GW27 (whu)
with B i'd captain Lukaku in GW26 (SUN) and Ibra in GW27 (BOU)

    Lallana/Alli/Capoue/Phillips
    Defoe/Lukaku/(Carroll)

    GW27(2FT) - Lallana/Defoe --> /Siggy/Llorente

    Heaton
    Alonso/Brunt/Coleman
    (Siggy)/Alli/Capoue/Phillips
    (Llorente)/Lukaku/(Carroll)

    GW28 (1FT) - /Capoue --> Stanislas/Antonio

    Morning guys! Thoughts on this?

    Current team (3-5-2):

    Grant
    Valencia Nyom Alonso
    Hazard, Phillips, Firmino, Stanislas, Sanchez
    Aguero Kane

    Jak, Barnes, Holgate, Amat

    Transfers:
    Firmino to Milner
Phillips to T.Carroll (or up to 4.3 mid)
    Barnes to Defoe

    New team (3-4-3):

    Grant,
    Valencia, Nyom, Alonso
    Hazard, Milner, Stanislas, Sanchez
    Aguero, Defoe, Kane

    Jak, Holgate, T.Carroll, Amat

I really want to go 3-4-3 and have Milner as Liverpool coverage. I know he's OOP in a bad way but he is consistent.

    Any other ideas welcome!

So Hazard burns his sellers again and now has Burnley and Swansea next. This season has been so cruel on those who chase points especially with heavy hitters (myself included. Sold Hazard for Alli 2 GWs ago).

Do we just need to follow the fire and forget policy with premium players who: a) Are world class players in reality b) Have form throughout the season c) play in teams that score a lot. I am referring to the likes of Costa, Hazard, Sanchez, Kane, Ibra. It has happened time and time again that they go in a 2 or 3 GW slump and an exodus starts to happen only to be burned big time right after that with points explosions. Maybe we just need to pick 3 or 4 out of those attacking players as the spine of the team and just forget about them. I have lost so many points swapping them around.

I thought I was good at this game until this season. I was patient with Hazard for months. I dropped him last week and he starts scoring and assisting. Its ridiculous.

Haven't taken out Sanchez and Hazard all season. Or Siggy for that matter. Can't really complain about the points per game of that midfield 3!

Did Aguero for Kane after about ten weeks and not changed that either.

I boast.. but I've got my other two striker positions wrong virtually all season!

You may lose so many points swapping them around, but you can miss a lot of TV (mine is 101.5) and points (I'm at 1.1 million) when you try and be patient when many others are being proactive.

Keeping Firmino and Ibrahimovic through their droughts, when many others were selling them for Eriksen and Costa, is what has ruined my season.

Firmino never had any real form this season though apart from just glimpses. And that was when Liverpool was firing too. Now they are in a slump. No reason to have any Liverpool options at the moment. Bad fixtures and form and low ownership means even the odd explosion won't do damage. This is not the case with Costa, Hazard, Sanchez and Ibra.

Firmino scored 58 points in 7 matches, from gameweeks 4 to 11. There were multiple hot topics on which Liverpool midfielder to get. This was all before their implosion of form.

I was just using him as an example of how things have gone wrong in the past, not as if he's an option now.

His ownership never really rocketed though. Was never consistent enough to cause that and was never captain material.

Could not agree more, it's not as if he's been blanking either he's had a few assists in the time he's been shedding owners

Up until Liverpool Hazard had been playing well - just not FPL well.
Was so tempted to dump him this week with the price drops but in the end fixtures after Arsenal just seemed too good.

Not really. He has no form and not even starting at the moment.

No form? Like the periods when Haz is without goals or assists?

No reason to blankly turn down other people's arguments, just because they break your own flawed case.

Hindsight when you look at Hazard. If you kept him for too long last season, you will quickly lose ground. Hazard did not have the stats, did not pass the eye test and got subbed early the last GWs. Made no sense keeping him over in-form players like Tottenham mids, especially if you have Costa as attacking "cover".

As for the other names, it is all about timing. As you say, can`t have them all.

Sold Mkhitaryan, and I think he fits this criteria. I knew he had the potential to burn me and he promptly did.

I had to laugh, because the exact same thing happened with De Bruyne - since I've sold him he's scored 2 goals.

Generally I think you're right - if you genuinely believe in a player's class, then stick with them regardless of worsening fixtures or a mini-slump in returns.

I've come good with Firmino, Carroll, Toby, Kane and Hazard in recent weeks all players I'd toyed with switching. Patience does pay off within reason.

I'm thinking about Holebas -> Brunt to have cover for WBA DF and more player on GW28, but it will cause me a bench headache.

    Heaton - Jaku
    Walker - Alonso - Baines - Holebas - Lenihan

Should I do Lenihan -> Nyom instead ?

Arsenal's biggest mistake was selling to Kroenke. He is a businessman and happy with finishing fourth. Should have sold to Usmanov.
