The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 24

Cursed with a reputation of failing to deliver to form and fixture, while some have tried to dispel the myth, Romelu Lukaku chose today to slay it once and for all.

The stage was dressed and set for the Belgian.

With the fixture list driving his recruitment, there was a degree of forced faith in Lukaku.

Two blanks on the road had created an air of caution, but Everton’s home form was strong enough to offer real hope.

Bournemouth, as today’s visitors, were offering the biggest reason for optimism. Incredibly, Eddie Howe’s side arrived at Goodison Park having shipped 20 goals in their last ten outings, conceding three in six of those matches.

The script was meticulously scribed and, for once, Lukaku read and stuck to it perfectly.

It took him just 30 seconds to expose the Cherries frailties, ominously curling home a confident opener to tease the destruction that was to follow.

Bournemouth’s second half rally merely drew the sting from Everton, with Lukaku ending the match in riotous form.

Acquired by over 75,000 prior to today’s deadline, Lukaku boasted an ownership of 1.1 million FPL managers.

However, only 22% of those owners chose to back him with the captaincy, perhaps distracted by the lure of Zlatan Ibrahimovic or Harry Kane, having previously been stung by the Everton striker.

However, announcing himself this season with a hat-trick on Wearside, Lukaku chose Bournemouth as his next major victims and bullied them with a similar display of pace, power and finishing.

His 21-points ranks second only to Alexis Sanchez’ fabled London Stadium haul – Lukaku’s return today is the top individual score by any FPL forward.

With the fixtures remaining kind and with Gameweeks 26 and 28 booked in, his ownership and price will likely rocket.

However, while we can lavish praise his way this evening, we should not forget the frustration he can cause.

Stalling badly from Gameweek 11, Lukaku appeared stuck in a rut and unable to drag Everton from their Autumnal malaise.

But something clicked thereafter – perhaps the new arrivals on Merseyside, perhaps Ronald Koeman’s new formation – but the smile returned, and the energy and hunger came with it.

Incredibly, he now leads the Golden Boot race. Involved in 51% of Everton’s goals, boasting an almost identical points per match tally as both Diego Costa and Ibrahimovic and second only to Jermain Defoe for points per million value, the case for Lukaku is compelling.

Was there ever any doubts? Of course, but at least for tonight, we will conveniently forget the past.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

The way i see it, Nobody will own Ibra and Costa in 27, so i'm getting Costa's extra game in 26, plus a shootout between them in 27 which Costa could well come out on top of.

To keep or not to keep - Sanchez and Ibra.

Leaning towards keeping Ibra through to GW29 and transferring out Sanchez after HUL.

    Other thoughts?

I really want 1 more game for GW28. Think it would make it possibe to field 11 players.

I noticed that according to the Opta stats Lukaku didn't earn as assist yesterday (fair enough compared to FPL points) but the funny thing is Costa didn't earn one at all despite being awarded two in FPL. I found this interesting so I hope someone else does 🙂

I think they (just about) reflected their rules correctly yesterday but I guess one point I'd make is people need to take this into consideration when looking in the members area at player stats. Opta stats don't match the FPL scoring.

Watching the replays ofHazard goal it is not clear to me that it was Costa who had last touch on ball before Harzard did his thing. Who decides these Fpl assist? 1st assist seems valid given history of Fpl.

Koscielny. I haven't seen any spot clearly showing it was Costa. Furthermore, I am of the impression that Koscielny clearly touches the ball right before Hazard scores.

So I my mind the Costa assist is very doubtful.

In theory it would be likely. If I score more than the average person in the top 10k I am more likely to move up in rank. Lukakus score being so high has changed that. And the fact he was the second highest owned captain by people in the top 10k. Luckily Brunt, McCauley, Hazard and Defoe have saved me slipping.

Funnily enough, the Lukaku haul doesn't appear to have done as much damage as it could have done.

Primarily, it seems, because most people who had Lukaku didn't captain him. The ones that did in my leagues basically didn't get decent scores from most of their other players either.

The difference between this and the Sanchez haul, I think, was that loads of people captained Alexis that GW.

Owned by 39% and captained by 15%. Take Lukaku out and my gameweek would be great. Loads of differentials scored big. Defoe, Brunt, McCauley, Hazard. Yet I have dropped in rank.

That seems to be the biggest impact, then, which sadly doesn't affect most of us as we're not in the top 10k.

I've dropped from 18k to 25k overnight. Considering what Lukaku did yesterday and I don't have him, that's not a massive drop.

          • Fantasy Football Scout Member

But it does affect you. 18-25k is a rank which has a very realistic chance of finishing top 10k. Anyone under 100k at this stage has that chance.

But Lukaku being so highly owned/captained by the top 10k makes it harder for you to reach the top 10k in thr future. The gap has widened.

I'm not convinced Nyom is nailed. Once Evans or Wilson come in Dawson will go to right back. Brunt may well stay at left back.

Robertson. Hull looking tidy defensively now, too.

Swansea defence still worries me, I'd leave them alone as well as Palace and Bournemouth defenders.

Going to hold my hands up - think I got a bit lucky with Lukaku (c) yesterday.

I'm a Lukaku fan and given the fixtures he'd have been a consideration regardless of the blanking 26/28 situation but I'm not sure id have gone Giroud to Lukaku ahead of Giroud to Kane if it wasn't for GW28. Whoever I brought in was going to be my captain.

Interesting given the thoughts in recent times about GW28 forcing your hand and taking the fun away from transfers (I felt the same to be honest). Enjoyed following yesterday's games more than most GWs this season. Funny how things pan out.

I'm absolutely same. GW28 caused me to get Lukaku in otherwise would have gone for Kane when transfwring Giroud out.

      Apologies all

Fair play to you, though, for sticking the armband on Lukaku.

Ok if you were in a cash mini league (about 30 players) and it's 1st - £400, 2nd - £250, 3rd - £100 and you were in 2nd place would you play it safe and try and stay 2nd or throw caution to the wind and go for 1st although that means it's much more likely you fall out of top 3?

That's playing it safe. I haven't taken a single hit and haven't been afraid to mirror 1st place as tbh he knows what he's doing. I knew last week he'd go Lukaku captain (he already had him tbf) but I still transferred him in and threw him the armband.

£400 isn't enough of an increase to risk your likely £250. Play safe.

    Chaps, any suggestions?
Depending on the game today I'm thinking of switching Sanchez for Yaya or Sterling as I think Man City will hit form and can free up cash for Lukaku.
Currently switching Costa for Kane depending on fixtures.

    Foster
    Alonso Koscielny Bertrand
    Hazard Sanchez Lallana Phillips
    Kane Giroud Rondon

    Subs: Jakupovic, Lescott, Browning, Mutch

I don't like that at all... MCI with 2 blanks (most likely) in next 4 games... downgrade lallana to let's say snodgrass (no blanks) and upgrade giroud to lukaku and u are g2g..
