Scout Report – Luka Milivojevic

After signing Jeffrey Schlupp and Patrick van Aanholt earlier in the transfer window, Crystal Palace completed their business with the capture of Serbian international midfielder Luka Milivojevic from Greek side Olympiakos for an undisclosed fee, believed to be worth around £11 million.

Speaking to the club’s official website prior to the weekend loss at home to Sunderland, Palace boss Sam Allardyce provided an insight into how Milivojevic may fit into the Eagles midfield:

“He’s a defensive midfield player with great ability with both feet and is a really good passer. I’m not sure that Yohan and Punch’s roles are in that sitting position but this lad loves to play there and sees it has his main position. There’s no guarantee he’s going to jump straight into the Premier League and be fantastic – we hope he is – but I’m looking forward to working with him and getting him up to speed as quick as we can.”

The History

Milivojevic began his career at hometown club Radnički Kragujevac, making 17 appearances during the 2007/08 season, and scoring two goals, before moving to top-tier side FK Rad ahead of the 2008/09 campaign.

Over the next few seasons, he made 54 appearances, scoring three goals, prior to joining Red Star Belgrade in December 2011.

He stayed with Red Star for around 18 months, registering seven goals and six assists in 47 matches, before moving to Anderlecht in July 2013.

Milivojevic never really settled in Belgium, though, managing just two assists in 25 matches, before joining Olympiakos initially on loan in September 2014.

The Serbian was a regular starter for the Greek side, and joined on a permanent basis in June 2015 for a fee of around €2.3 million.

Over the course of his two-and-a-half seasons in Greece, Milivojevic racked up 15 goals and seven assists from 94 appearances, and helped the club to two league titles.

Milivojevic represented Serbia at U19 and U21 levels before making his senior debut against Chile in November 2012.

He currently has 19 caps to his name, but has yet to open his account for his country.

The Prospects

Having missed the weekend loss as untangles red tape surrounding a working visa, there’s hope that Milivojevic could be available for Palace’s upcoming clash with Stoke.

Discussing the new boy after Saturday’s chastening defeat, Big Sam reckons that the Serbian’s screening presence in front of the back-four will be vital:

“I think Luka will bring a bit of stability into midfield, and we need that. Teams keep getting through our midfield far too easily and far too many times. I didn’t see that at Bournemouth, but I have seen it again. The second goal [from Didier Ndong] was a stunner, but the disappointing thing for me is the third and fourth goals we told the centre-halves, you can’t let Jermain Defoe run behind you. And what have they let him do, they’ve let him run in behind them.”

Clearly, then, Milivojevic should help fill what has been a troublesome position for Palace since the departure of Mile Jedinak to Aston Villa last year.

Both Joe Ledley and Mathieu Flamini have been tasked to sit in front of the back four, or as the holding midfielder in a double-pivot in a 4-2-3-1 formation, and have struggled to make an impression.

Fellow central midfielders Yohan Cabaye and James McArthur are far better going forward than they are in terms of their defensive contributions, so the addition of the tenacious Milivojevic should help provide greater protection in front of what has been a vulnerable Palace defence.

Palace have conceded 45 goals in the 24 matches they’ve played so far, with only three teams boasting a worse defensive record. Indeed, last Tuesday night’s 2-0 win at Bournemouth was just the second time this season they have registered a clean sheet.

While Milivojevic’s goal scoring is very reasonable for a defensive-minded midfield player, due mostly due his shooting prowess from distance and dead-ball abilities, it’s unlikely he himself will be a viable Fantasy asset.

He’ll be battling with the likes of Cabaye and Jason Puncheon for set-piece duties, and is probably unlikely to force himself to the front of the queue.

The 25-year-old’s qualities were neatly summed up by Allardyce, who said the Serbian was “a talented two-footed player with intelligent passing ability as well as being very strong defensively, in and out of possession.”

He’s been handed a price tag of 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), but with team-mate Wilfried Zaha, who has registered four goals and eight assists so far this season, available at 5.5, it’s the latter who should provide us with the strongest option from the Palace midfield.

But if he can provide a formidable shield in front of the Eagles rearguard, then the appeal of Palace defenders could rise once again.

Scott Dann reminded us of his abilities with a third of the season against the Cherries, while Van Aanholt and Schlupp (if played out of position on the flank) could also be viable options for our five-man backlines.

Palace’s schedule (sto, MID, wba) remains kind in the short-term, while they face favourable home match-ups against Leicester City, Burnley and Hull City during the final month of the season.

So while it’s unlikely that Milivojevic will pop up on our radars, he could well provide greater balance to the Eagles midfield, and become a key component in Allardyce’s ongoing quest to shore up his troubled defence.

            So, 28 is starting to take shape, something like this maybe, 3* transfers and 8/9 starters;

            Jak
            Baines / Brunty / Robertson* / Holgate(?)
            Sigurdsson / Phillips*
            Lukaku / Carroll*

            (Kane / Hazard / Alli / Eriksen / Valencia / Nordfeldt)

Brunt goes to RW when Evans is back, right?
If evans is out for even longer, then morrison becomes a good option?
Can he be then considered over Phil?

Yep, seems that way. Nyom back to LW, Dawson back to RB when JEvans returns. It makes Chadli & Morrison slightly iffy tbh. Not even as if Morrison can go DM w/Fletch, TP always prefers the likes of Yacob/Livermore in there, holding.

How did you get your TV so high? Do you ride the price rises? I'm languishing on under £103m.

You have a real shot at winning. Does it add a lot of extra pressure to your transfers?

Honestly my team value isn't THAT high, I did play the prices at the beginning of the season but now I'm trying to play for points most of the time. I don't really have much of a chance at all, maybe with a few more years under your belt you'll realise the Top 1k is quite spread out and they do make a lot of good decisions so it can be difficult to make way.... I'd need a good few gameweeks like the one just past. If I was Top 100 I'd feel the pressure but now it's okay 🙂

    A. Amat to Maguire (4-4-2)

    B. Sanchez to Hazard (3-5-2)

    C. Ibra to Costa (3-4-3)

    .4 itb, team below

    Heaton

You could let the ft roll. I can't see anything that needs addressing other than preparing for the blank. Only thing I can suggest not to upset you team would be one of your bench fodder to a hull defender.

Kane to Lukaku? It'll be a 0.2 price swing (Kane down, Lukaku up). Only issue is next week I have Ibra and Sanchez blanking.

Bizarrely Danny Rose might be the defining factor for me. If they keep with four at the back Eriksen's stats and position seem better than Alli's but if Rose isn't out for long I reckon they'll switch to the 3 at the back system that pushes Alli beyond Eriksen into an almost second striker position... in that case I much prefer Alli 🙂

Yep, Alli looks the better pick going forward.
Not mad about shifting the wee Dane though so I might maybe perhaps move Sanchez one week early.
Just watched his & Ozils halfarsed performance against Chelsea so maybe consider shifting before the improving Hull game.
Sounds crazy I know but maybe strangely sensible!!

Maybe shrewd is a better word! I don't think I could ever call ditching the top scoring player in the game who's top of the captain poll by a fair margin, likely to have a Top 10k effective ownership of over 100%, potentially playing OOP as a striker against Hull at home a sensible move! 😉

This money ITB is killing me... Can't buy any premium assets cause they all blank, can't spread it out due to transfer restrictions and the problem of getting premies back in for 29.

    1. Jigger & Pony

What does the team look like?

      1. Postman Ty
        • 9 Years
        7 years, 2 months ago

        Heaton - Jaku
        Alonso - Coleman - Brunt - Chambers - Amat
        Sanchez - Erikson - Phillips - Allen - DeRoon
        Ibra - Lukaku - Benteke

Just did Aguero --> Lukaku so I'm up to 4.2 ITB and 0 FTs. (I was soo close to doing that last week, hate myself now.)
The midfield clearly needs the upgrades but my next two transfers are probably Sanchez and/or Ibra out because they blank twice, which means one/two more significant downgrades.

        Siggy in for a hit?

I agree, but Palace are in shambles so Allen could finally get back on the scoresheet as well, and I think Siggy has been over performing a bit lately. They both have crap fixtures the week after, but I think Siggy is worth the long haul.

A bit stuck here. Would like to get Gylfi but cant find a way I like. 1FT 0,1 ITB

    Heaton ( Jakupovic )
    Alonso - Baines - Pieters ( Nyom, Amat )
    Sanchez - Alli - Antonio - Phillips ( De roon )
    Ibra - Kane - Lukaku

I have WC but want to save that for later on really.

Save free transfer - GW26 will be an excellent week to have 2 transfers depending on FA Cup shock results, 2 week break, blanks planning, etc. The team above is serviceable for WK25.

    Save FT??

    Heaton

    Alonso, Peiters, Williams

    Eriksen, Alli, Phillips, Sanchez (c)

    Ibra, Costa, Lukaku.

    Subs: Pickford, Evans, Fletcher, Amat

Only really transfer would be Pickford > Jaku or Alli/Eriksen > Siggy

Is everyone's plans really to get 11 out for GW28? From most likely 6 teams?

It just seems strange to sell players we will want back in a week later.

I'll be happy with 8 players and benching my premiums, Sanchez, Costa, Alonso especially.

If 6 teams, being up to 8 short isn't too bad if you have the high scoring players for the round. Good chance it will be 8 or more.

            It's valid.

As yet we don't really know which big players will have the two best fixtures to make the TC call that for me will shape what way I end the season.

TC might not be as strong as last season. Was a bit flukey that there just happened to be some massive captaincy hauls last time in such a timely manner.

Sanchez had two plum fixtures and Aguero scored well in the hard but not the easy so yeah that was a bit flukey.

I mean using it on a blockbuster player. Quite a few blew it on Andy Carroll and Bolasie.

                Crazy stuff.

Yeah for sure. Obviously Carroll and Bolasie isn't the way to go. Still, even with two good fixtures, to get 4 goals+ was better than expected.

Agree with TH that the risks on triple captain last year were baffling with FPL royalty as options.

I agree with Wakey about number if decent picks. Its all about right players but about right bench fodders for the upcoming weeks (Hull def) or players with kind schedule (WHU).
          Jaku
          Baines, Coleman, Brunt, Robertson
          Siggy, Antonio, Philips, Chadli,
          Carroll (c)
10 with Heaton, Alonso, Eriksen, Jesus and Ibra +1 ft to step into gw 29 (for one of WBA mids)
WBA and WHU plays Bournemouth during that spell. Worst def atm. Worth investing imo.
Then i will WC around gw29-31, to prepare a partern for season finale.

3 x wba, 3 x eve, 2 x Hull, 3 x wham, 2 x swa, 2 x bou there are more than 11 options with eve, wba, hull and swa in particular having good fixtures in the interim also.

The key is having a wc to set your team right nd set up for the dbl bonanza in 34 (and potential dbl before also).

      Definitely 10 probably 11.

Not attractive fixtures for Arsenal,, ManU, ManC, Liverpool or Chelsea in GW29.
      I'll have 2 Chelsea & 1 Spurs on bench with 2 FT's for GW29.
It's unlikely that I will but I'll still have option of WC if there's any clarity to the DGWs in 34 & 37.

I'll most likely have 10 with no hits and I only plan to bring in 3 picks out of the next 4 transfers who have a GW 28. But some of the starters are useless fodder who've been in my team forever now viz. Smith Nyom Phillips Williams Jaku and then I also have had Brunt for a while and brought in Lukaku last week. The bench fodder will get 2 points each most likely, or in the case of Smith 0.

They would be fine as second matches in a DGW but can hardly stand alone as the only bites at the apple for points in a SGW.

I'm going to try and field 11 and WC after that.
As we already know that ( very likely) Arsenal, ManU, City and Southampton will have 2 DGW's it shouldn't be too difficult to already have a core of 8-10 players that are guaranteed a DGW in both 34 and 37 so no need to wait until GW 33 to WC.
Since you'll probably want to use TC in 34 ( because Arsenal is playing Sunderland at home then + either Leicester at home or Southampton) you won't need to have 15 DGW players and having just the 11 will be easy enough.
After that there's still 3 weeks to get 15 DGW players to BB in 37 ( if you want to max that). Finally, by going all out in 28 I think I'll at least have a numbers advantage to most in that GW and can easily bring in the players I want for 29 ( dropping Sanchez and Ibra before their blank in 26 won't matter if I WC in 29).

In GW 29 you could for example get Sterling, Jesus, Caballero, Zlatan, Miki, Valencia, Iwobi, Sanchez, Mustafi, Gabbadiani, Forster to already have 11 players with 2 DGW's and add Alonso, Kone, Chambers and de Roon to that. Just an example, but you'll have good players with good fixtures, have an advantage in GW 28 because of 11 players while others may choose to bench their premium players as well as already being prepared for the DGW's and still have a few gameweeks left to tweak your team to form and injuries.

I don't get the expectation of a big DGW34 as any team winning their 6th round match will get their GW34 match postponed anyway. Yes they will almost certainly have an earlier postponement joining GW34 but this will leave them with a SGW overall. No way to plan properly until both the GW28 6th round GA cup ties are played and the EFL cup final postponements are announced.

Is the opposite plan here to WC now or next week?

That way maybe gaining some extra points by being able to field a decent 11 in GW28 with the view to having manouverability to easily transfer in the big hitters for the following DGW's?

Most likely sure benching players: IBRA, Kane, hazard(I'll get for Sanchez after gw25)

I have lukaku, Antonio, Philips, baines, mcauley, jakupovic.

I'll prolly get siggy for alli, holgate or Mawson for amat or friend and brunt for PVA giving me 9 players (10 if amat starts) with rodwell nd amat/friend on blanks

That's 4 transfers from now till gw28 and no hits taken.

I may also take hits if needed for king or snoddy or Morrison to replace rodwell if needed but not likely.

      lot of scenarios available here.

Was originally planning on having about 9 players - 7 in place already.
people on here do seem to have planned pretty well in advance but checking mini-leagues a lot of people seem to have only 3 or 4 players in place already.
So will they just ride it out or take hits to get a reasonable number of players in? If they're taking hits then sitting on 8 or 9 players might be a good option.
The other issue could be that a lot of people start dumping the likes of Sanchez, Ibra and there could be an opportunity to build some value before WC by selling then buying back cheaper. Potentially you could see big falls in Gw 26 & GW 28 for the same big players.

I dont think it is a good idea to take hits and have players from both sides. SO if you have 2 EVE Attackers and you plan to take hits to get in 2 WBA def for GW 28, it might not pay off . Infact, It is better to have soring players from one of the sides and let the others be a BIG ZERO than have a -4 as well.
I would be looking at Hull Defenders and EVE attackers as an early prep transfer strategy and wait for the FA cup results!

I've been slowly working towards it for the last few weeks, I could field 11 for GK28 but it would leave me digging myself out of a hole onwards. I ditched Sanchez for Siggy yesterday to beat any rises, so I'm banking on a minimal Sanchez return against Hull. Team is currently:

      Heaton Jaku
      Banes Coleman Brunt Pieters Wilson
      Siggy Alli Eriksen Stanislas Philips
      Lukaku Ibra Barnes

Planning to get Snoddy in and Carrol/Llorente for Barnes, I was considering changing Pieters to Maguire but it's not a pressing matter. That's a strong team for GW28 and will only require a couple of weeks of surgery to return to full strength.

Hull have stifled my boys Ibra and Coutinho these past two weeks. Any reason why they won't do the same against Sanchez again this week?

      Arsenal attack is more inventive.

Liverpool is one of the best attacks in the league. More inventive that giving the ball to Sanchez and letting him do everything.

Liverpool play the high press and benefit from opponent's mistakes.

Exactly this, Arsenal when they click dominate teams and like to play against park buses... at this moment in time I think if Hull concede early it could be a bloodbath... completely different kettle of fish compared to United or Liverpool

Even against Chelsea they created a lot. Maybe Sanchez was a bit disappointing

Even if hull is playing away they are a team with renewed spirit and confidence playing against the gunners at home with hostile fans and disllusional star players. I sense an upset and more pressure in wenger.
