The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 26

This is getting to be a habit for Romelu Lukaku.

With a legion of more than 627,000 FPL managers tentatively trusting him with the Gameweek 26 captaincy, he muscled his way to Everton’s second goal to repay the faith and bolster his heavy-hitter CV once again.

While we perhaps had visions of another Bournemouth-style bumper return against a hapless Sunderland defence, Lukaku’s backers will gladly accept a seventh strike from his last four Goodison Park encounters, providing further evidence that this may just be an asset we can trust with the armband.

He was almost handed it by default on this occasion. With both Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Alexis Sanchez closed off as options, the support for Lukaku was somewhat forced.

Diego Costa provided the main alternative and, while he proved his reliability with yet another goal, he remains a slow drip to Lukaku’s gushing tap – a player that will feed us regular points without promising to excite.

Having blanked in four of his last nine Gameweek starts, it offered reassurance that the Costa consistency was still there. However, he missed out on bonus points once again and has yet to score more than 9 points at Stamford Bridge all season; explosivity is just not on the menu with Costa – in more ways than one.

Ironically, he could now give way to Sergio Aguero in many squads – a player renowned for one-off hauls that can better even Lukaku’s Bournemouth effort – should Manchester City’s double Gameweek 27 be confirmed.

Elsewhere today, West Brom’s Chris Brunt again missed out on a potential assist. Denied in Gameweek 25 by the top of Gareth McAuley’s head that deflected Jonny Evan’s initial effort, today Brunt’s corner led to the scrappiest of goals – with McAuley again the benefactor.

Two weeks to the day, the Knee Jerk remarked on how McAuley was a charmed asset, a player who almost bought about his own luck by being an alert and significant physical presence in the box.

And so it came to fruition again today.

Brunt’s delivery was met with a feeble punch by Bournemouth’s Artur Boruc, span off what appeared to be Steve Cook’s back, before arriving for the gleeful McAuley to convert. The two touches from two Cherries players, cancelling out Brunt’s contribution.

Fortune again the provider for McAuley, while denying another delivery from Brunt it’s reward.

Brunt appears to have developed his own unwanted habit, and it’s a far nastier one than Lukaku’s.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

You can but in alonso case his throw got headed by opposistion (granted upwards and not out) which became a 50/50 ball which costa won and scored from. A lot of passage of play happened before it went in so I found that ludicrous to allow that as a assist to the 2nd to last chelsea player

I think they just should give assists like in ice hockey. Last one who touches from your team gets assist. Today Brunt would have an assist no mater how many opponents would have touched the ball after the cross.

        • 9 Years

Well for me an assist is giving someone the opportunity to score, which is clearly what Brunt did today. Think this is way more worth the tag of assist than like for example the Costa assist for Hazard against Arsenal

Agree... and I still don't get how McAuley got that goal few weeks ago when he did nothing. Evans shoots, the ball goes in and If it was a defender who touch the ball it is still Evans goal according to rules, as it doesn't change the course of the ball.

keeper hoofs it up field to other keeper who fluffs a clearance and attacker scores ( or defence passes it around a bit but gives it to attacker) - assist to defender because he touched it last? No way

No.. it doesn't work like that. There has to be clear intention to pass and than no matter what accidentally happens (touches from opponent players) goal is finally scored. That is an assist in hockey. Your case wouldn't count as an assist.

They just look at last play. If it is opponents wrong pass for example than no assist given. If it is accidental touch or touch that didn't change the action than you can get an assist.

Makes sense but that's not what you said though ? ''Last one touches from your team it gets an assist'' ... which strictly is not what happens in hockey

Yeah my bad.. I wrongly expressed myself.
So looking on last cases in PL. Alonso throw in would be assist, Brunts corner today is still assist but unfortunately last GW's Evans goal would be only assist as Mc Auley touched it as last one (if he touched it cause I 'm not sure ).

So it's back to the "man in the stands" determining what contributions warrant points. That's how FPL used to be like before Opta. 99.9% of the time, it is much better now.

                  Clearly not.

FPL is infuriating hundreds of thousands every week.

Key contributions work very well on TFF. No solution is perfect, but it is ten times better than what FPL are doing.

                    I don't really agree.

Brunt doesn't deserve the assist for McAuley's goal today; it was a Boruc error which then hit Cook before McAuley finished (and I'm a Brunt owner).

The only really bad decision I've seen, is Evans bullet header being given to McAuley. Anyone who watches that in real time, would say it's an Evans goal. I'd only agree with it being given to McAuley if Evans' header wasn't on target, but as they were so close to each other I don't think that can be reliably determined.

Look at Lukaku's "goal" today. I've not heard anyone questioning it but on first glance he shoots for the far post but it's going wide and the sliding defender sends it past Pickford. That won't be analysed as no-one is interested in taking the goal away from Lukaku and giving the defender the OG.

                      Fair point.

Although you have to ask yourself, would there have been a goal without Brunt's cross? No. It was absolutely vital to the goal and yet zero points.

That's why key contributions is fairer.

I'm all fired up now. The assist rules as dictated by Less Than Opti Stats are completely arbitrary. Someone's in the way body part touches the ball after a guy blasts it and all of a sudden it's his goal. A mishit off your knee that drops to a teammate that blasts it home is an assist. Feels a bit like a mockery at this point. It's like the unintentional gets credit same as the intentional. Which is wrong IMO.

Is this a wind up, a defender may of intended to rifle in a 50 yard goal but if he failed and it fell to the striker who tapped it in, it should be the defenders goal because he intended to score?

    A) Holebas + Eriksen > Coleman + Firmino

Will give 9 players for GW28 (if Phillips is back...) and 2FTs to start bring back in DGWers.

    B) Holebas + Eriksen > Coleman + Sterling

Get Sterling for probable DGW, use FT to bring in Liverpool mid, only have 1 FT in GW28.

Yeh I did have a look over that.

I just think that Sane is really finding his feet now and is also looks more likely to score than Sterling ever does.

Sterlings goals tend to be tap ins.

            It's really tough.
I've watched every city game this season and these past few weeks Sane is looking really great.

(Sterling was brilliant against Monaco though)

Not sure which one would be likely to play less minutes either in a DGW -

As the fa cup in between the EPL and champions league games - I don't think it's as big a deal.

But Sane has played a lot less mins this season so I can see him being kept on a bit longer if city are comfortable in a game...

Also from differential point of view less than 1% own Sane...

What to do with this mess? 2FT and 2.4 million ITB. Willing to take a hit or 2 if it leaves me in better shape long term.

    Valdes (Pickford)

    Alonso, Coleman, Brunt, Evans (*Amat*)

    Alli, Hazard, Mane, *Phillips* (*Stanislas*)

    Ibrahimovic, Lukaku (*Anichebe*)

Interesting. Same suggestion came to my mind. I guess optimum result is sterling baring he has dgw and then sterling to Siggy next gw...without a hit.

I'm still gna go for siggy

Bit of a no brainer. Hazard sucks defenders away, and it's not like Pedro doesn't have pedigree. He works hard for the team, can shoot, and is in form.

Yep, similar. Tricky to resist the Citeh assets in their DGW, but playing it with a cool head the best option may be to bring in just one and give him the armband. You then don't have to factor in a hit for another Citeh player, then potentially another hit to take him out for GW28.

In short, a captain has a better chance of paying back the transfers.

Is there any reason why I shouldn't do Alli > Siggy tonight to capture his 0.1 rise?

This will release the funds to then do Kane > Agüero for -4 if GW27 is a double for City.

I can't afford Sterling which, in a way, puts temptation behind me (and don't think Sane has the same potential) which avoids further hits for GW28.

    Thank you

Gamst Pedersen? What a player 🙂

Yep, if you're planning on captaining Aguero in GW27 then they look like good moves. Alli / Eriksen seems to be the fall guys next week.

        Thanks

Souness signed him but struggled to get regular games when Mark Hughes arrived. He certainly went on to became a fans favourite; scoring some rasping goals.

Pity his time at Blackburn ended at time of so much acrimony and I feel that he didn't get the send off and gratitude he deserved from the new owners who don't have clue about football.
