The Stock Check – Gameweek 27 – Sunday

Manchester City’s front three all get among the points in the first match of their double Gameweek. Elsewhere, Harry Kane and Dele Alli deliver double-figures, and Romelu Lukaku breaches Spurs’ resilient rearguard as Everton prepare for a run of strong home fixtures.

On the Rise

Sergio Aguero
Although we’re not exactly over the moon with a single goal at Sunderland, Aguero’s fifth strike in three keeps his momentum ticking over nicely ahead of Wednesday’s home clash with Stoke City.

The number one transfer target for double Gameweek 27, the Argentine persuaded over 156,000 FPL managers to wield their Triple Captain chip after scoring twice in cup clashes against Monaco and Huddersfield Town in his previous pair of Etihad Stadium outings.

Aguero’s owners will be hoping that history repeats itself in midweek. Back in Gameweek 1, he netted once against Sunderland before squaring up to Stoke in the following league fixture – a match which saw him fire a brace.

Bearing in mind that swashbuckling City notched five times in that recent pair of cup encounters, hopes remain high against a Potters defence that leaked four at White Hart Lane in their previous road trip.

Raheem Sterling
Second only to Aguero for transfers in ahead of the double, the winger maintained his remarkable run of FPL form by setting up the Argentine’s opener.

Sterling has blanked just twice in his last 11 league outings, serving up two goals and nine assists over that period. He has now provided 12 FPL assists for the season – only Christian Eriksen, with 13, has managed more.

It’s not just his output that catches the eye, though – Sterling has now started more league matches than any team-mate under Guardiola. While many will look upon the 12.8-priced Aguero as expendable once the double has passed, the consistent Sterling – at just 7.9 – is making a case to retain for the rest of the run-in, in spite of a blank Gameweek 28.

Leroy Sane
Firing City’s second at the Stadium of Light, the German now has five goals and three assists in his last eight starts across all competitions.

While Aguero and Sterling proved far popular picks, Sane – with a mere 3.3% ownership – has emerged as a canny differential for the double, with today marking a fifth successive start in the top-flight.

The summer signing has played all but two minutes over that run after being subbed off on 88 minutes this afternoon – given that Sterling has played from start to finish in just one of those fixtures, it’s a clear sign of Sane’s growing importance to Pep’s plans in the final third.

With worries over his pitch time now seemingly dispelled, those holding the 7.6-priced Sane may well consider retaining if they can cope without his absence in Gameweek 28.

Harry Kane
Shrugging off a minor knock in time to face the Toffees, the Spurs frontman continued his fine recent form with a two-goal haul in today’s early kick-off.

With many understandably prioritising double Gameweek 27 assets, Kane was drafted in just only 47,000+ FPL managers despite bagging a season-high 20-point return against Stoke last Sunday.

Today’s opener, in particular, illustrates a player whose confidence is sky-high right now, yet the bandwagon will continue to remain on ice as Spurs are, of course, without a fixture in Gameweek 28 due to FA Cup Quarter Final commitments.

Looking at the schedule from Gameweek 29, though, Kane is likely to become an integral part of our three-man frontlines, with Spurs squaring up to Southampton, Burnley, Swansea City, Watford, Bournemouth and Leicester City in the subsequent six.

Dele Alli
While Christian Eriksen suffered a rare blank at the Lane, Alli punished the 106,000 FPL managers who offloaded him for Gameweek 27.

With Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen both passed fit, Mauricio Pochettino was able to retain his 3-4-2-1 set-up, with Alli grabbing a goal and assist thanks to his central support berth behind Kane.

Now up to 13 goals and six assists for the season, Alli’s ascent up the FPL standings has taken him to second spot in the midfield pecking order behind Alexis Sanchez – all the more impressive given that he only scored three times in the first 16 Gameweeks.

While Eriksen continues to rely on assists – he’s now failed to score in 11 straight Gameweeks – Alli’s cutting edge may now see him emerge as the go-to Spurs midfield option for the run-in once we’ve navigated that upcoming blank.

Romelu Lukaku
Despite boasting a Gameweek 28 fixture – at home to West Brom – the Everton frontman was surprisingly dumped by over 161,000 FPL managers ahead of the trip to White Hart Lane.

To an extent, it was understandable – Spurs had conceded just once in their previous seven at home, while Lukaku had failed to score in his last four road trips.

Yet a strike against Pochettino’s troops took the Belgian’s tally to six goals in the last four Gameweeks ahead of four very promising Goodison fixtures (WBA, HUL, LEI, BUR) in the next six.

Already, over 27,000 have turned to Lukaku since yesterday’s deadline, and that upcoming schedule indicates he’s likely to remain prominent in many managers’ plans until a Gameweek 33 clash with the Clarets has passed.

In Decline

Kevin De Bruyne
Considering that no City player had started more league matches than the Belgian prior to today’s match, it’s fair to say that his exclusion from Pep Guardiola’s starting XI took many by surprise.

Having rested David Silva and Yaya Toure against Huddersfield in midweek, the City manager chose to unleash De Bruyne from the bench – disappointing the 6,937 FPL managers who took the bold decision of Triple Captaining him.

Conversely, today’s teamsheet certainly strengthens De Bruyne’s chances of starting at home to Stoke on Wednesday night but on a day where Sterling and Sane illustrated their mid-price value, the 10.5-priced Belgian left his owners once again disappointed.

Jermain Defoe
The most transferred out forward ahead of Gameweek 27, the veteran’s failure at home to City means that he has netted in just one of the last six league outings.

With the Black Cats set to miss Gameweek 28, Defoe is second only to Zlatan Ibrahimovic for sales up front since yesterday as the exodus picks up pace.

Nonetheless, a kind batch of fixtures from Gameweek 29 suggests that Defoe may still have a say – David Moyes’ men are handed home clashes with Burnley and West Ham in addition to trips to Watford and Leicester in four of the subsequent five.

Ademola Lookman
The winger’s run of three straight starts came to an end as Ronald Koeman named him amongst the subs for the trip to Spurs.

Priced at just 5.4 in FPL, Lookman had emerged as a viable, short-term means of navigating the decimated Gameweek 28 schedule after recently clambering ahead of Kevin Mirallas in the Toffees’ pecking order.

Yet while the Belgian benefitted from a second-half sub appearance to provide the assist for Everton’s second, Lookman warmed the bench from start to finish for the first time since arriving from Charlton.

Frustratingly, the winter signing boasted some strong underlying numbers but today’s teamsheet suggests that the pricier Ross Barkley – who earned the assist for the Merseysiders’ opening goal – remains the safest route into Koeman’s midfield ahead of those abovementioned home fixtures.

Not seen much said about Ayew on here. Proven goal scorer, could work well alongside Carroll and West Ham have a GW28 fixture plus decent fixtures after. Anyone think he is worth bringing in if he plays tonight?

Hardly fireworks from Aguero last night.

I don't know what I was thinking taking a hit to get him for Kane.

Please reassure me that Aguero will start against Stoke.

Surely Pep won't rest him when he's scored in the last three games.

I will 100% do Aguero to Kane in gameweek 29 but soo many are buying Kane even though Spurs don't have a game in gameweek 28. Any chance Kane's price will rise this week? He's currenty at 11.3 while Aguero could drop again?

My logic below. Question is whether Pep follows this logic:

      - They are playing Stoke (PL), Boro (FA Cup), Monaco (CL) and Liverpool (PL) before the international break. The most obvious rest game is 'Boro
      - The owners won't give a toss about the FA Cup while City are still trying to secure an automatic CL spot and are still in the CL so Pep has to try to win as many PL games / CL games as possible. The owners pay Pep's salary so he had better listen
      - City have a tough run of games after Stoke where they play their rivals. So getting a win against Stoke gives a buffer.

All in all adds up to the first team playing against Stoke then mass rotation against Boro. A 0-0 draw between Chelsea and West Ham tonight would be a good result IMO too as it gives City hope of the title. Would be 6 points behind with Chelsea still to play if they beat Stoke.

    OUT: Sterling & Sane
    IN: Which two ?
    1) Coutinho (or Firmino)
    2) Snodgrass (or Antonio)
    3) King

I already have Mane / Siggy / Mirallas

Would you consider Sterling or Aguero for long term? Or is better do go with Liverpool mid. But City will have another dgw soon....

I've made the same move. I think Llorente could be gold in the next 4-6 gameweeks. I think Sterling is pure value and Kun is overpriced so i think Kun out is the way to go.

Brave. I think you need the CS to come through to get a defensive captain. Wba awful on the road so you have a decent chance there. However, I think that kaku or the liv kids are the better options!

Yeah it's had no major impact, but then again I think most people have overhyped the triple captaincy to be something it's not. All it is, is only extra score for a player than any other normal GW. Can be expecting too much from it.

Although hopefully the Stoke game will end up more exciting for us owners and deliver more.

Yeah exactly, Smurf! I think just because my BB landed last year I forgot how close Payet with 33 was to being a failure as my TC.

Hoping for more involvement at home for sure. I have Sterling as well, but that's mostly hygeine as all of us the top 5 in my ML have him (should've gone Sane!)

Think that's the same for me. Feels very indifferent as a TC!

Me too. I do think we'll probably have to make do with another goal or something though. Hoping for an early opener and then floodgates in the first half; Stoke were OK second half v. Spurs but when they got breached early it was a flurry.

Feeling the impact. My rival in my ML is now only 19 behind. Before Kane's haul to Stoke he was 80! He gambled massively with a -12 this week bringing in Sterling Sane and Sergio. The TC on Sergio now means a brace on Wednesday he could be top. So he definitely has made me worried with TC.

It looks like we may need to interchange forwards from here anyway, Ibra/Costa dgws to come.
For me actually Kane (non owner!) looks the one and the rest depend now on fixtures, I don't see Aguero as 'locked' into my team if I'm honest-he restricts us and all the aforementioned strikers can match him in terms of score and certainly in terms of value.

Want to bring in a Swansea defender. Olsson and Mawson or go supercheap with Fernandez. What about Naughton, when is he back?

Nice fixtures and no blank is a good compination.

Olsson is on fire right now. Crazy wingback. Goals+assist+bps machine. Mawson close second.

I had this decision and have already made my transfer to Olsson.

I think for the small outlay Olsson or Mawson maybe better, especially as I plan to play them in GW28 but also GW30 (MID).

Swansea seem to attack well now and I feel Olsson will get the chance to assist as well as score, whereas Mawson will really just get attacking points from set plays.

My logic for taking hits for GW28 is simple maths. I stupidly sold Lukaku this week to keep Zlatan whilst bringing in Kun. So had only 5 for GW28. Just cost myself -8 to get King, Firminhio and Lukaku in for Adam, Sterling and Ibra. Can now field a 2-4-2 with no keeper. As players sold can't score I need only an average of 3 from my 3 new attackers to increase my net score by 1. I expect more than that too so is essentially a free gamble.

    1. Pep says
      • 8 Years

In hindsight it was stupid. If Ibra got a hatty you woulda said people sold him stupidly. It was the right decision, just got unlucky. The pen miss was a 6 or 7 point swing.

Agreed with the taking hits bit though. Im not getting on the King train though. Next Phillips incoming.
Ibra Kun Stan to Llorente Lukaku Mane. I wouldn't bet against any scoring this weekend and I'm happy with all 3 going forward.

Thanks Pep for the comforting words. Ibra did have lots of chances, especially the pen so could have got the haul we predicted, even just a goal would have been okay. Glad you approve of my logic. I like your moves too.

    GW28: Ibra -> Llllllllorente

    Jaku
    Brunt, Coleman, Robertson
    Mané, Phillips, Siggy, Davies
    Lukaku, Llorente

8, 9 or 10 depending on Phillips and Davies involvement.

Worth shifting Phillips -> King for a -4?

I've done Llorente, too! Think that's pretty sound, him and Siggy look like the poor man's Fabregas and Costa from 2 years ago!

I would be really tempted to shore up and get Phillips out. Can you afford a Liverpool midfielder (Lallana maybe in reach?)
I think they'll tonk Burnley, they're due to flat track bully and maul someone at Anfield soon I think. I'm probably getting Cout in myself.

Was the wrong move yeah - knew Ibra would have to do something special in order to make it worthwhile so risk was big.

Keeping Ibra with Bournemouth at home was the right move whatever the Captain Hindsights might try and claim. And if he'd scored that pen (which 9/10 times he would) it wouldn't even be an issue.

Given that it's essentially 8 points to remove and bring him back in (Lukaku) then Ibra would have had to have scored twice to make it worthwhile. Not even taking into account the possibility of Lukaku getting any attacking returns.

The ceiling wasn't big enough but I still told myself it would be 🙂

Essentially 4 points. Ibra out was one transfer. Lukaku out and back in 2, so only -4 in my eyes. Fancying Lukaku to not score and Ibra to score 2 plus 3 baps meant it would have paid of by 7 points. Could easily have ended up this way tbf

A lot of it boils down to a reluctance to get rid of Ibra ahead of Bournemouth at home.

    a. Ibra + Phillips > Lukaku + Lanzini/Antonio (-4)

    d. Kun + Capoue > King/Antonio

I've gotten rid of Ibra over Kun, think he's likely to fall in value harder and also likely to be suspended. That means if there's a nasty injury I'm forced to deal with after GW28 at least the forward I kept has a game. If not, Kun becomes Kane without question!

In your case, I think A is a good move. I have Antonio and be warned, he really runs hot and cold. I'd opt for Lanzini instead, could be an explosive differential.

Aguero + Sane + Sterling + Capoue + Friend --> Llorente + Siggy + Coutinho + King + Baines for -16. Feels crazy to take so many hits but it makes sense since the alternative is to field one less player. What do you think?.
