The Stock Check – Gameweek 28 – Sunday

Harry Kane limps off out of Spurs’ FA Cup win over Millwall with an ankle injury as Fantasy managers fret on his availability for the run-in. In his absence, Son Heung-min fires a hat-trick in the 6-0 rout, while Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli grab a goal apiece. Elsewhere, Georginio Wijnaldum delivers again, and Ashley Barnes boosts his third-forward credentials as Liverpool struggle to see off Burnley at Anfield.

On the Rise

Georginio Wijnaldum
In a Gameweek where many loaded up on Liverpool’s pricey front three, it was left to a couple of differentials to come to the fore at home to Burnley.

Transferred in by 12,000+ and 5,000+ respectively for the reduced programme of fixtures, Georginio Wijnaldum and Emre Can grabbed a goal apiece as Jurgen Klopp’s side eventually saw off a stubborn Clarets outfit.

While Can’s strike was his first since Gameweek 14, the Dutchman’s leveller maintained a fine run of form that has produced three goals and two assists in his last six appearances, blanking on just one of those occasions.

With Philippe Coutinho looking out-of-sorts and Roberto Firmino missing out with a knock today, Wijnaldum – at 7.5 and owned by just 1.6% of managers – may well emerge as a mid-price differential for the run-in.

Once next week’s visit to the Etihad Stadium has passed, the Reds are handed home encounters against Everton, Bournemouth and Palace, in addition to trips to Stoke City and West Brom, in the subsequent five.

Ashley Barnes
Having served a one-match suspension in the previous Gameweek, the Burnley striker made an immediate return to the first XI alongside Andre Gray up front.

Barnes’ opener once again highlighted his appeal as a budget third striker to be called upon off our benches –priced at a mere 4.5 in FPL, he now has four goals and a pair of assists in his last 11 league outings.

The lack of a double Gameweek further down the line dents his appeal, yet with Sunderland, Stoke and Middlesbrough in the next four, Barnes should continue to offer value for money over the short-term, at least.

Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli
While Harry Kane limped off early in the 6-0 thrashing of Millwall, the Spurs midfield duo show just why they both occupy a place in the top five FPL midfield standings.

Handed a role amongst the subs, Eriksen climbed off the bench to replace the stricken Kane and helped seal Spurs’ place in the last four of the FA Cup by grabbing a goal and two assists, while Alli delivered a goal and assist to score for the third home match in succession.

Despite failing to net for the last 11 Gameweeks, Eriksen has kept his tally ticking over with eight assists, including four sets of double-digits. Alli, meanwhile, has netted an impressive ten times during that period to lead his team-mate by 11 FPL points.

While the concern over Kane’s injury escalates, the upcoming schedule will ensure that many turn to Spurs’ midfielders regardless as Mauricio Pochettino’s side prepare for a fine run of fixtures that sees them host Southampton, Watford and Bournemouth in the next six and also travel to Burnley, Swansea City and Leicester City.

Son Heung-Min
Three goals and an assist in the Millwall demolition suggests that the Korean could ultimately prove the main beneficiary from a possible spell on the sidelines for Kane.

Initially tucking in alongside Alli in the central support roles behind Kane, Son thrived as a result of Spurs’ enforced reshuffle, with Pochettino initially overlooking summer signing Vincent Janssen as a replacement.

There are no doubts that Alli and Eriksen are the safest options amongst the Spurs midfield contingent – particularly if Spurs continue with a 3-4-2-1. Yet today’s performance indicates that Son – priced at 6.9 and owned by only 3% of FPL managers – could now emerge as a viable alternative should Pochettino’s star striker be ruled out for any period of time.

In Decline

Harry Kane
The Spurs frontman lasted just ten minutes against Millwall earlier this afternoon before being forced off with an ankle problem, potentially throwing the plans of Fantasy managers into disarray.

Just 24 hours after the previous deadline passed, Kane had already been acquired by 34,000+ new owners in light of the form that saw him serve up 12 goals and three assists in the previous ten Gameweeks.

Bearing in mind that Kane missed seven weeks (and five Gameweeks) of the season with an injury to his right ankle, a repeat of the same complaint would have a significant impact on how we assess both Spurs and our three-man frontlines.

Indeed, his manager’s post-match comments sounded somewhat ominous for the striker’s 21.4% ownership after he left the stadium on crutches:

“He twists his ankle – the same ankle as it was before against Sunderland. Now we will wait and assess tomorrow and wait and see. Today it’s difficult. It’s a similar situation to Sunderland. We need to assess him today it is difficult to give you a real level of how he is. We hope it’s not a big issue, but it looks similar. It’s sure it will be difficult for him to play against Southampton but we need to see what happens in the next few days. Every time something like this happens and before the scan, he immobilises with a [protective] boot.”

With Zlatan Ibrahimovic banned for the next two Gameweeks and Sergio Aguero mustering two goals in his last ten league fixtures ahead of three tough Gameweeks against Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea, our premium options up top are already limited. A potential stint on the sidelines for Kane may well see many now look to utilise a 3-5-2 set-up and spend big on re-acquiring Alexis Sanchez in a five-man midfield.

Philippe Coutinho
Subbed off before the hour-mark, the little Brazilian’s toils continued against the Clarets.

Despite being devoid of Roberto Firmino, Jurgen Klopp still chose to replace Coutinho after an ineffectual display saw him fail to produce a single shot on goal or create any scoring chances.

Frustratingly, the former Inter man boasted some strong underlying numbers ahead of this one – firing more goal attempts (20) than any player in the previous four Gameweeks, he was drafted in by 103,000 FPL managers last week.

Those new owners may already be reassessing that decision, with today’s blank taking Coutinho’s run to one goal in his last ten league appearances.

Factoring in my team/potential transfers and the Price prediction sites, this could actually be an old school GW where I do my transfers as late as Friday night.

Reasonable strategy at this stage of the season regardless of what the price transfer sites say, I reckon.

Certainly makes a change for rushing on a Sunday/Monday night.

Also the price changes don't seem as volatile anymore.

    Morning all!

Good week in 28 but one mistake was getting rid of Aguero for Carroll because I had Kane in planned. Really I should have kept Aguero but no use worrying about that now. Question is what do I do with Carroll as he has Leicester (h)

    Pickford
Alonso - Coleman - Funes Mori
    Sterling - Coutinho - Mane - Siggy - King
    Lukaku - Carroll

    Heaton - Brunt - Crouch - Mawson

I have around 7.6m itb. I can do Coutinho to Sanchez.

Worth a hit to take out Carroll for Costa or Vardy?

Or do I leave Carroll in for Leicester and just get Gabbiadini in for GW30? I'm actually tempted to ship Lukaku in GW30 for Gabbiadini but not sure if I want to be taking Lukaku in and out many more times 🙂

Have to think ahead to doubles as well so someone like Costa is a good placeholder for Ibra.

I would stick with Kaku, he's looking fixture proof (although I've probably just jinxed it!)

Like the Vardy pick actually and West Ham looked horrendous defensively. Leicester are on the up.

It happens, you couldn't have known that Kane is gonna get injured. You're still in better place than me as I kept Kane and will have to remove him now. 🙂

Costa and Sanchez for Carroll and Coutinho looks good to me. Don't trust Vardy just yet.

You can do just Coutinho to Sanchez this week. And Carroll to Gabbi the next one if you don't decide to go Costa.

        Good luck.

Vardy against West Ham looks a good bet if you want a differential. Fonte was ruined by Pugh/Fraser, so might work again.

I wonder if Vardy is just too much of a risk.

Costa is likely to keep trickling in points and if he does happen to go big it won't hurt my rank by owning him. That's a very boring thing to say though 🙂

I'm really tempted by Vardy. Was looking at him even before the Kane injury but couldn't fit him in, now it's a pretty straight swap assuming he makes it through the CL game. Costa will probably do well, it's just not very exciting and whu, STOKE, SUNDERLAND are quite good fixtures for Vardy.

I know you're not the biggest fan of Costa (I'm not ether) so I'd go with someone you are more excited by.

Usually I like taking risks and gambles but in this case I think n the best way forward is the sensible way. Play Carroll against Leicester (not a bad fixture to be honest) and then get Gabbiadini in for Carroll next week.

Lukaku is a funny one. He can score against anyone and Liverpool for starters aren't great at the back. But then again Everton don't seem to do great usually against top teams away from home. I do think he's worth keeping thought for the LEI & BUR fixtures and to then use him as a place older for a DGW striker.

I'm in the same boat. Think I'll keep both Carroll and Coutinho this week and use my FT to get rid of Brunt. I would hold off Sanchez for now and assess how much game time he gets and whether he's stuck out on the wing.

I have used my WC and now I have to use the FTs to get DGW players for GW37. Currently I have a forward line of Ibra Lukaku Gray. The plan was to get Kane in place of suspended Ibra in this GW & Gabbiadini in for Gray the next week. Once the DGWs were confirmed I would have bought Ibra again in place of Lukaku (probably in GW34).

Now that Kane is injured I am thinking if I should just bench Ibra for two weeks, reasons being - Lack of proper alternative (Costa is consistent, but not as explosive as Kane), Wouldn't profit much selling/lose value keeping (bought for 11.2), and most importantly I have a plan to get him back anyway. Instead I am thinking of upgrading T.carroll to Pedro & playing 3-5-2 for a while.

      What do you think?

In two GWs, the maximum he would lose value is .6. And I think that's unlikely to happen, because 11.5 was his base value. Plus the impacts of wildcards & Kane injury.

          Squad for this week.

          Foster*/Grant

          Brunt, PVA*, Coleman, Maguire, Amat*

          Mane*, Coutinho*, King, Siggy, Sane

          Kun, Kaku, Llorente*

What are the more pressing transfers do you think? (Those with*)

Why Mane? 1 bad week? Coutinho possibly as out of form. Otherwise I'd tidy up your defence... get a Spurs/Chelsea defender in.

I'd sort out the defence. Might even wanna take a hit if it sets you up nicely in the long run. Coutinho still has like 20 shots on target his last 5 games so I wouldn't rush to get him out and we all know what Mané can do.

Keep them for atleast a week and see how Spurs manage without Kane maybe? It's an easy swap to do Cout to Alli if they do well.

              29 = Kane > Costa

            Mane Coutinho Eriksen Siggy King
            Aguero Lukaku

            Jaku Llorente Mawson Brunt

            1×FT 2.5itb

            A) Save
            B) Coutinho ➡ Alli/Hazard
            C) Aguero ➡ Costa
            Coutinho ➡ Sanchez (-4)
            D) Coutinho ➡ T.Carroll
            llorente ➡ Costa(-4)
            E) Llorente ➡ Barnes
            Coutinho ➡ Sanchez (-4)

First season back playing FPL in years. Made the noob error of getting Kane in early before his injury and obviously regretting it now. Had 72 this week and it looks to be undone now because of my impatience. Do you guys think Kane>Barnes is worth a -4 with a view to going Grabban>Kane in GW30?

Do people really think Sanchez is now a rotation threat?

I just don't buy it. Sure Giroud might start but Sanchez to get benched again? No chance.

Surely Wenger learned his lesson after last time? Just can't see it happening again.

No, I think he'll play, but is he 100% focused?

No Chance he gets benched. just a excuse for people to not bring him in for now and then cry when he bangs a brace that they thought he is going to be roatated and nobody spoonfed them about this

Rubbish. If you think you can be sure of what is happening at Arsenal then you are wiser than most Arsenal fans.

The state of morale is in question. The manager and his future is in question. The relationship between Sanchez and his teammates is in question. The status of Sanchez and Özil after this season is in question - even whether they want to stay at the club - and that could conceivably affect their playing time this season. Sanchez' position is in question, his OOP status seems likely to be gone and he is never the same FPL proposition when playing wide.

I don't need an excuse not to bring Sanchez back immediately. Arsenal's next 2 fixtures are awkward anyway and they are in awful form (I take a 5-0 against non-league opponents as no meaningful data at all). They usually improve again from March but this time it may have gone too far.

So I'll watch and see and decide in a couple of weeks' time. 🙂

I'm in no rush to get him back, just wait and assess his minutes.

Waiting until GW31 seems like a fair idea as well but surely that's just a fixtures thing rather than minutes?

Thats the way I'm looking at it anyway. The only thing is I'll have to leave money in the bank to avoid a major overhaul if I need to get Sanchez back in.

Kane injury has thrown a spanner in the works.

Who would you pick out of these 3 for the next 3 GWs? Probably WC after that anyway.

Vardy: West Ham (a), Stoke (h), Sunderland (h)
            Defoe: Burnley (h), Watford (a), Leicester (a)
Deeney: Palace (a), Sunderland (h), West Brom (h)

Morning all, was thinking of wildcarding this week to have a clear out a re-adjust for the fixture changes but after getting 78 points it doesn't seem right to wildcard. Thoughts on current team:

              Heaton
              Alonso Coleman Brunt
              Coutinho Mane Siggy King Antonio
              Lukaku Aguero

              Bench: Robinson, Barnes, stones, maguire.

For a -4 I could do something like coutinho and stones out for Sanchez and Masson?
Or go ahead with original plan and use the WC? (Would involve getting Alli back, Sanchez, gabbiadini, Chelsea attacker, changing goalkeepers etc).
