Selection

Spot the Differential – Gameweek 29

While only Georginio Wijnaldum provided instant returns from our three differential choices last week, we’re hopeful our latest selection can improve on our recent success rate.

This time around, we’re backing pacey widemen from Crystal Palace and Arsenal, along with Leicester City’s resurgent striker, to excel and produce those all-important attacking points.

Theo Walcott

Now down to a very appealing 7.3 in FPL, Arsenal’s Theo Walcott could be worth a roll of the dice ahead of this afternoon’s early kick-off against West Bromwich Albion.

The Gunners midfielder has started to recapture some of his early-season form in recent weeks, registering three goals in his last four matches in all competitions.

So given that West Brom have shown some vulnerabilities at the back in their last four clashes, shipping eight goals, he may be able to translate that form over to Fantasy returns.

The Baggies have also been conceding chances (16) down their left flank in their last four matches, the joint-second highest among all 20 teams, so the pace of Walcott may be able to cause further damage down that side.

Tony Pulis’ charges have seen their performances dip over the last two Gameweeks, with defeats to Crystal Palace and Everton, so now could be a good time for the Gunners to head to The Hawthorns.

While Walcott hasn’t registered any attacking returns over his last four appearances, he’s still amassed an impressive eight goals and three assists this term.

So with his ownership having sunk to 4.1%, he looks a great differential for this week and beyond, with favourable fixtures against West Ham United, Crystal Palace and Middlesbrough to come over the next five Gameweeks.

Arsene Wenger’s men will also have at least two double Gameweeks later on in this season, so Walcott, who may have a point to prove after being left out of Gareth Southgate’s England squad, looks to offer plenty of upside for potential suitors.

Wilfried Zaha

After scoring in Crystal Palace’s 2-0 win against West Bromwich Albion last time out, Wilfried Zaha may be able to enjoy further success in a favourable match-up at home to Watford this afternoon.

No Premier League side has conceded more goals than the Hornets (eight) over their respective last four matches, while Walter Mazzarri’s side have also been vulnerable down their right flank during those four encounters.

They’ve allowed 24 chances down that side of the pitch, a tally matched only by Stoke City.

Having started the previous two matches on Palace’s left, Zaha’s speed and trickery looks primed to take advantage of that apparent weakness.

Zaha, who sets us back 5.6 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), has enjoyed a strong campaign up to this point, with five goals and eight assists seeing him rack up 104 points, 16 more than any other Eagles player.

So with Palace in desperate need of another victory this afternoon to help steer them clear of the relegation zone, the onus will be on the winger, who is only owned by 5.7% of FPL managers, to provide attacking impetus to the side.

Zaha will also be extra keen to get one over Watford, after being accused of diving in the 1-1 draw between the two clubs in the reverse fixture. He’ll certainly be looking to get one over on Harry the Hornet this time around, then.

Jamie Vardy

Having won all three matches under new Leicester City boss Craig Shakespeare, confidence looks to have returned to the champions and, in particular, Jamie Vardy.

The forward, who’s been transferred in by over 31,000 FPL bosses this week, seeing his price rise to 9.7, has registered two goals and an assist in his last two league appearances, while he also struck an invaluable away goal against Sevilla in the Champions League.

With Leicester belatedly showing the same fighting spirit that took to them to last term’s title, this afternoon’s trip to West Ham looks ideal for the Foxes to hit the Hammers on the break.

Vardy’s pace looks well suited to cause problems to both Jose Fonte and Winston Reid, with Josh King’s hat-trick last weekend suggesting Vardy could exact similar damage.

West Ham has also been pretty porous of late, shipping eight goals in their last four matches, while they feature among the seven teams conceding the most shots inside the box and big chances over the same period.

While Vardy’s ownership has risen to 8.5% in FPL, he still represents a real differential, particularly amongst active squads.

He also faces further strong fixtures at home to Stoke City and Sunderland over the next three Gameweeks, so now may be the time to place our trust in one of last season’s most vital performers.

    Morning to all.

Feeling very week as this GW approaches. Any suggestions for improvements:

    Grant
    Brunt, MacAuley, Coleman (Holebas, Amat)
    Eriksen, Mane, Coutinho, Siggy, (Davies)
    Lukak, Aguero, Llorente

Transferring in a South American international, before a PL game and a long haul flight to play for his country twice, for the sake of 0.1m is the stuff that Scoutcast rants are made of. 😉

He may even be rested GWK 30 if he arrives back late. I'm not looking at him until Mourinho says before GWK 30 that he is back and raring to go.

I plan to wait. Good point about the internationals.

Although I completely disagree with your ranting in general. You get annoyed at early transfer but it is as much part of the game as captaincy and picking the 11 you want to start.

Just because you have an ultra low risk/reward strategy. That's fine for you and will have its advantages and is a valid strategy. But those taking a higher risk to get players in fast to build up TV, even with the risks they may not play etc. is just as valid a strategy as this risk is weighed against the potential gain in TV over the season.

This stage of the season I will take my time with transfers as I have a great TV but most of the season I've done really transfers and now sit with a great TV. I cannot think of one instance off the top of my head (although I'm sure there must be one) where this has backfired on me this season.

Both strategies are valid but I don't get the rants just because you don't like other people not playing your boring risk free strategy and gaining from it.

If each manager's strategy just affected them it would be fine - but early transfers to catch price rises that early transfer managers are themselves generating affects all managers under the current transfer algorithm.

If people stopped earlier transferring then there are no price rises to necessitate that.

            Surely everyone benefits from that?

Nothing to do with risk and dullardity - more to do with one group of managers tactics adversely affecting all managers.

But jonty the adverse affect on your opponents is the whoke point of the strategy.

You are taking a risk on injuries so that your opponents cant afford the same team as you.

In fact it validates the strategy more as the affects are multiplied so the upside to you is greater

No one cares about having a high team valuebfor the sake of it they care because their opponents cant afford the same players. You then have to decide whether the benefit generated over your opponents is worth the risk.

In this instance i absolutely agreed the risk with kane was not worth it and waited but took quite a few chances earlier in the season and hence have 2 or 3 million more fire power than several in my mini league for the run in. The faater moving price change has exagerated that benefit and slgtly changes the balance in the strategic decision. Of course it is no guarantee of sucess and many lower value teams will out perform over the next games.

                  Completely agree with all this.

Both strategies are fair if that's what a manager decides to do and what's more is this has been an element of FPL forever not just this season.

Price changes maybe more volatile in recent years but failing to adapt to this is just as bad as failing to adapt to in form players such as Vardy/Mahrez last season.

I don't feel Jonty's argument is valid at all because it's more like "I don't like it because it doesn't benefit me" when in reality he has the option to choose how he plays the game as much as those that make early transfers do.

I think this season those who have been making early transfers - and by early transfers I mean before a player actually plays midweek/Sunday - have been lucky there have not been more injures.

In previous seasons that has not been the case. Take that season when every non Aguero owners rushed to get him the day of his GWK 8...only for him to get injured a few days later for Argentina.

I get the element of risk t it and there has always been early transfer moves...but while in previous seasons they have been costly - this season there have been rewards.

Oddly the period of this season where I have been at my poorest was when I took early transfers - eg Hazard after that Everton game. He did little afterwards. The period where I've done better has been when I've waited - for more information especially and also until they have played midweeks. The result has been a far better performance (Since Dec I've been averaging 55 pts a week which would be top 30K).

Good luck to early transferers as more often than not you will need it. But as you both say there is no guarantee of success from either being risk adverse or risky.

Many top managers this season have been patient - many have not. That's the thing about this season there really aren't any hard and fast rules of success when there is such a wide variety of strategies being deployed.

Yes. Your post makes sense. I get the reasons why waiting has its benefits for sure.

It's just to disregard early transfers as a viable strategy seems foolish. As well as calling people doing early transfers "stupid" 😉 when it clearly has its rewards.

Anyway good luck in your patient strategy. I wish I didn't have such an impatient personality and maybe I'd be in the "wait until as late as possible" side of FPL managers with yourself.

Defence for this GW is currently:

Alonso / Walker* / Funes Mori* (Brunt, Yoshida)

Think I'll bring Valencia in but for whom?

        a) Brunt (Free up more cash but risk that FM & Walker both don't start meaning Yoshida v Spurs will sub in..)

        b) Funes Mori (Has a good fixture if he plays, but if he doesn't at least Brunt will come in as sub if Walker doesn't play)
