Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Europa League – Thursday

A late goal for the hosts ensures a wasteful Manchester United must go to Old Trafford with their Europa League quarter-final tie still in the balance. While post-match, Jose Mourinho has a further revelation on Antonio Valencia. Here’s the notes from Thursday’s events.

Anderlecht 1 Manchester United 1

Different country, same old result – Man United again failed to kill off a match and had to settle for a draw in a Europa League quarter-final they dominated for long spells.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s smart finish from a tight angle, after Marcus Rashford’s shot was parried, had given the visitors a lead that their first-half superiority utterly merited.

But United are a side that has drawn 12 of their league matches this season and they took that inability to convert chances with them to Belgium.

Jesse Lingard hit a post and, crucially, Paul Pogba was denied when put through by Zlatan Ibrahimovic after the break.

That would have probably killed off the tie. Instead, minutes later, the Belgians equalised from their one and only attempt on target – United had seven.

The result was precisely not what Fantasy managers were looking for, creating doubt as to team selection in the run-up to a double Gameweek 34 involving trips to Burnley and Man City.

United could, and should, have run out easy winners in Belgium, allowing Jose Mourinho to concentrate his increasingly sparse squad resources, if only in the short-term, on attempting to secure a fourth-placed league finish that would guarantee Champions League football next season.

Now, he will surely be forced to field a strong side in next Thursday’s second leg right before embarking on that double Gameweek.

Mourinho’s post-match comments regarding the 16.1%-owned Antonio Valencia won’t have eased the concerns of Fantasy managers either.

“Antonio Valencia is having some problems and he cannot play every game.”

The Ecuadorian right-back has already missed the last two domestic matches. Those who were banking on strong returns from him in Gameweek 34 are suddenly very uncertain, while his start against Chelsea also appears far from secure.

Injuries to key players in both defence and midfield mean Mourinho can only shuffle his pack so much, but the Red Devils now face four key fixtures in 13 days, starting with a huge match on Sunday against Chelsea.

Expecting the 30%-owned Ibrahimovic and Pogba (7.6%) – or even differential prospects Mkhitaryan (2.4%) or Rashford (4.7%) – to feature in all four perhaps seems unlikely.

The best-case scenario probably involves United losing to Chelsea, forcing Mourinho to commit fully to winning the Europa League and taking at least some of the doubt over selection out of the equation.

But based on how United’s season has been going, they’ll probably draw it, and those doubts will linger.

Team: Romero, Valencia, Bailly, Rojo, Darmian, Carrick, Pogba, Mkhitaryan (Fosu-Mensah 90), Lingard (Martial 63), Rashford (Fellaini 75), Ibrahimovic.
Subs not used: de Gea, Blind, Ander Herrera, Shaw.

The choice is doing my head in. If I captain Kane, I will basically have to hope Lukaku blanks and I hate doing that. But if Kane explodes and Lukaku does blank it could be huge

Don't you just need Kane to outscore Lukaku for it to be a success?

I am captaining Kane. A risk worth taking IMO.

Well Lukaku's ownership in the top 10k will be well over 100% so if I don't captain him, any of the points he scores will be a negative for me regardless of how Kane does. It would be better for me if he blanks

But yeah in principle as long as Kane scores more it would be okay

Im still changing them. The Leaders in my League have Kaku Aguero or Costa - obviously some of them may get Kane. But if it goes well it will definetely gives us an advantage in the overall ranking. Just hope that Kane will get a quick double and an assist up to the 70th minute because there is a chance he will be substituded. Kaku plays the whole match.

Patrick van Aanholt has trained this week "so he'll join up with us." No more expected returners "Remy is nearly there." #CPFC
No mention of Townsend, thus far, the Palace winger left Selhurst Park on crutches after the win over AFC. "I got a knock on my heel".

What does 'no more expected returns' mean? Townsend won't be fit or it was never a problem to begin with?

    Sanchez - Alli - Siggy - King - Capoue
    Aguero - Lukaku - Carroll

Why is Kane a must? I would say Lukaku with his ownership and form is a must. Aguero keeps scoring and City are awesome away from home against weaker sides.

In the same boat. All depends on whether you think Kane will explode and beat Kun and whoever I bring in for Davies (3 Spurs already) and I'm not sure he will or not

Siggy to Zaha would be the sensible move

    Randolf
    Baines - BDavies - Alonso
    Sanchez - Alli - Siggy - Lanzini
    Kun - Lukaku - Origi

    Jaku, - TCarrol - Nyom - Amat

Really want Kane & Zaha in to try make up ground but struggling to do it without losing Sanchez ( rival doesn't have Sanchez).

Not keen on losing Kun tbh, Origi, Siggy & Lanzini can all go.

By shipping those 3 i can get Kane, Zaha and a 4.4m 4th mid , Tom Davies maybe ? Not really inspiring though.

I would make Barnes > Kane, downgrade walker and sane or valencia to afford that move. keep Sanchez.

Sanchez takes up so much money though! I couldn't even make the moves with Alli never mind Sane or Valencia! Sanchez > Zaha frees up 5.7m!! And why keep Sanchez when a lot are getting rid and no one is captaining! I can get him back later with a striker downgrade like Lukaku > Gabbi and Eriksen/Alli > Sanchez

you may be right but I'm doing everything to keep him. he's the one who can make a big huls. selling may be very bad move.

Anyone else considering Rashford as a punt for next gw onwards?

Cheap, will likely get 120mins+ in both DGWs and if Mourinho rotates he is likely to see a fair bit of gametime to help him develop.. hit the back of the net last week.

What do people think? (Yes, I can't afford Ibra).

wouldn't pick any Utd (apart from Ibra) as they just don't seem to be able to put away chances.

Nobody put off Kane by early KO? Kane has 5 goals in two games versus Bournemouth, but there's just something not sitting right with captaining him. Probably do it anyway.

If he starts I'm happy to captain if not its panic stations

Does Palace's training regime include hitting strikers legs with hammers? So many injuries.

I want Kane in this week, so getting him in for Kun. Got 3 Spurs already, so one of Davies or Son need to make way. So what is best IYO, for free:
      A) Davies to Boro defender
      B) Son to Zaha

Do we know if Walker is likely to play? Need to raise £1m to get Benteke. Its either walker to someone, or Bertrand to Stephens. Got two FTs.

      Pickssey
      Valencia Walker Bertrand Gibson Yoshi
