Scout Notes – Champions League – Tuesday

Jamie Vardy’s second-half goal is too little, too late as a spirited Leicester City finally exit the Champions League.

Leicester City 1 Atletico Madrid 1 (Aggregate 1-2)

And then there was one…the Premier League’s European aspirations now rest with Manchester United after Leicester could only draw the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final with a savvy, if at times rocky, Atletico Madrid.

Jamie Vardy’s second-half equaliser provided a measure of hope as the Foxes, easily subdued in the first half, went back to basics after the break and caused a measure of discomfort to the visitors’ backline.

The difference between the sides, in the end, was quality – Atletico controlled large parts of the tie and took the occasional chances that came their way. Leicester were second-best until all that was left was to give it a go. That they did, with impetus gained by a switch to 3-5-2 after half-time, and the Spaniards bent but never broke under the less than subtle onslaught.

Foxes boss Craig Shakespeare made one change from the first leg. Robert Huth was suspended, so the fit-again Wes Morgan, back after missing five league matches with a back issue, partnered Yohan Benalouane in the centre of the defence.

The Leicester captain’s return should have been welcome news for the 10.9% of Fantasy Premier League managers with him in their squads – only Vardy (14.8%) is owned by more.

But Morgan never looked match-fit and succumbed to a hamstring problem in the second half that threatens to put him straight back on the injured list again.

As for Vardy, he remains the talisman of a team reborn under Shakespeare but still lacking consistent returns from Riyad Mahrez.

The Algerian has managed two goals and an assist in the seven league matches since Claudio Ranieri was sacked. Vardy has scored six times and provided three assists over the same period.

That form makes the England striker almost undroppable, although the Foxes’ run-in is a decidedly mixed bag.

They face West Brom, Watford and Bournemouth and have a double Gameweek 37. But that involves Man City away and the visit of a rampant Spurs, while their next match is a trip to an Arsenal side scrapping to keep themselves in the hunt for the Champions League places.

The worry is that, as their place in the Premier League looks safe enough, there will be precious little for the defending champions to play for now their European campaign is finally over.

Shakespeare will know that a strong finish would do wonders for his own ambitions to lead the club on a more permanent basis. Whether that is motivation enough for the players remains to be seen.

In the meantime, Vardy remains the only Leicester asset worthy of consideration but, given the current clamour for the likes of Harry Kane, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Christian Benteke, he has become a casualty of heavy sales.

Vardy lost over 86,000 owners over his past two Gameweeks and has suffered a deficit of 17,000 so far ahead of the weekend deadline.

Team: Schmeichel; Simpson, Benalouane (Chilwell 45), Morgan (Amartey 84) , Fuchs; Mahrez, Ndidi, Drinkwater, Albrighton; Okazaki (Ulloa 45), Vardy.
Subs not used: Zieler, Musa, King, Amartey, Gray.

Oddly happy with how this is:

    Valdes (Pickford)
    Valencia Alonso Baines (Pieters, Mawson)
    Zaha Ali Eriksen Townsend (Lanzini)
    Kane Ibra Lukaku

Next week lanzini turns into King and I go all out attack.

    Anything else I'm missing?

Imo losing alli is an issue - he will outscore son and son isn't nailed. Aguero will outscore Ibra between now and the end of the game too imo. I feel that a Walcott out move for a better option would be more sensible

Thoughts on the potential team for GW34. Leaves me 4 players for the DGW without taking a hit to get any of them in.

    One move would be:

    Evans to Bailly

    Valdes | Pickford
Alonso Valencia Alderweireld Bailly | Amat
    Hazard Sanchez Alli King Zaha
    Kane | Carroll Anichebe

      Aguero will not fall
      Alli, neither rise nor fall
Son, maybe rise, but not very likely
Hazard, going nowhere, a little bit down but not enough to fall
Ibra, will rise, it´s a question of when rather than if.

Absolutely. But he´s not alone, you know. What I like best with him compared to the other top strikers is that he has it all. A lot of strikers tend to have one or to flaws or weak areas. The other thing is that he´s not a academy product and is somewhat a bit like Vardy in the sense that he isn´t a star from the academys but have gone his own way, resulting in a style of play that is a bit unorthodox and inspiring. Lots of strikers nowadays is quite boring to watch, so predictable.

Gibson this gameweek, but United has a much better gameweek 35 fixture (Swansea at home), so it depends on your Wildcard plan.

Also, I will rather rather have Bailly than Rojo as the former seems more nailed* and slightly less likely to get a red. Rojo likes to take a shot, however, so he might have a greater potential for attacking returns.

*I know that Smalling and Jones are out (forever), but if José decides to play someone like Blind, Fosu-Mensah or Tuanzebe in central defense against Burnley, I guess it will be Rojo that makes way.

If you´re right about Blind, Fosu or Tuanzebe (the latter is very very unlikely) but Blind is left footed so that will be Rojo but Mou already complained that the two had to play all matches so seems that he not sees Blind as an alternative there. Fosu Mensah is right footed so that means Bailly. Mourinho prefers to play with one left-footed CB if he can. Both are hotheads, but it looks like they have been told to be calm because Mou can´t afford one of them to be suspended with so little options at CB position. Both acted very calm vs Costa.

Those are good points. Thanks for the insight. I guess rotation in the Burnley match also depends on how it goes in Europe tomorrow.

A lot of factors must be included in considering on possible rotations; home match in EL, Burnley (short trip), Manchester derby and Swanse at home (no trip at all in last two), minutes played in EL, outcome of EL match(win/loss and 90 or 120minutes) but also what kind of match will Mou anticipate against Burnley? 4th place still inside of reach is also a factor.
