Scout Notes – Champions League – Tuesday

Jamie Vardy’s second-half goal is too little, too late as a spirited Leicester City finally exit the Champions League.

Leicester City 1 Atletico Madrid 1 (Aggregate 1-2)

And then there was one…the Premier League’s European aspirations now rest with Manchester United after Leicester could only draw the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final with a savvy, if at times rocky, Atletico Madrid.

Jamie Vardy’s second-half equaliser provided a measure of hope as the Foxes, easily subdued in the first half, went back to basics after the break and caused a measure of discomfort to the visitors’ backline.

The difference between the sides, in the end, was quality – Atletico controlled large parts of the tie and took the occasional chances that came their way. Leicester were second-best until all that was left was to give it a go. That they did, with impetus gained by a switch to 3-5-2 after half-time, and the Spaniards bent but never broke under the less than subtle onslaught.

Foxes boss Craig Shakespeare made one change from the first leg. Robert Huth was suspended, so the fit-again Wes Morgan, back after missing five league matches with a back issue, partnered Yohan Benalouane in the centre of the defence.

The Leicester captain’s return should have been welcome news for the 10.9% of Fantasy Premier League managers with him in their squads – only Vardy (14.8%) is owned by more.

But Morgan never looked match-fit and succumbed to a hamstring problem in the second half that threatens to put him straight back on the injured list again.

As for Vardy, he remains the talisman of a team reborn under Shakespeare but still lacking consistent returns from Riyad Mahrez.

The Algerian has managed two goals and an assist in the seven league matches since Claudio Ranieri was sacked. Vardy has scored six times and provided three assists over the same period.

That form makes the England striker almost undroppable, although the Foxes’ run-in is a decidedly mixed bag.

They face West Brom, Watford and Bournemouth and have a double Gameweek 37. But that involves Man City away and the visit of a rampant Spurs, while their next match is a trip to an Arsenal side scrapping to keep themselves in the hunt for the Champions League places.

The worry is that, as their place in the Premier League looks safe enough, there will be precious little for the defending champions to play for now their European campaign is finally over.

Shakespeare will know that a strong finish would do wonders for his own ambitions to lead the club on a more permanent basis. Whether that is motivation enough for the players remains to be seen.

In the meantime, Vardy remains the only Leicester asset worthy of consideration but, given the current clamour for the likes of Harry Kane, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Christian Benteke, he has become a casualty of heavy sales.

Vardy lost over 86,000 owners over his past two Gameweeks and has suffered a deficit of 17,000 so far ahead of the weekend deadline.

Team: Schmeichel; Simpson, Benalouane (Chilwell 45), Morgan (Amartey 84) , Fuchs; Mahrez, Ndidi, Drinkwater, Albrighton; Okazaki (Ulloa 45), Vardy.
Subs not used: Zieler, Musa, King, Amartey, Gray.

Ok so this may sound foolish

    - I am not getting Ibra coz I think he only starts one game
    - I already have Zaha and PVA, so going Negredo over Tekkers
    - For United cover, I am getting in Pogba for Sanchez coz I feel Pogba plays the full 180 mins this DGW
    - And finally, putting the armband on Negredo (coz Boro badly need to win both games)

    Thoughts anyone????

Do you guys remember MUN-BUR ?
I know BUR are tough playing home but I remember the Old Trafford game and just checked the stats. Ibra had 12 shots on target and 4 chances created. He should have bagged double digits on that fixtures. It's hard to ignore going into this WE DGW

The only reason it might NOT be worth it is that the team that Sunderland plays is Middlesbrough. It's like immobile force meeting unstopping object, the problem is, which one will fail bigger.

Anything else here for a hit? I've capitalised the DGWers

    Heaton, Jaku
    VALENCIA, Luiz, GIBSON, Pieters, Amat
Eriksen, Alli, ZAHA, Siggy, DE ROON
    IBRA, Lukaku, Kane

Using the WC next week so not a problem if bringing in just for this GW. £1.9M ITB. Considering maybe an extra Boro defender/GK, perhaps Valdes?

I'm totally stuck. Don't know who to sell or what to do. Need to cash in some money somewhere but all of my defence have a decent fixture this week and goal threat, Heaton could do another wonder show against Utd, Siggy is in a win or bust situation, I can't do anything with Carroll without funds from elsewhere, Lukaku could do well at WH I'm happy to hold until DGW36 wildcard. Totally stuck!

    3 options;

a, Heaton>Henno then Fletcher>Mijalovic and go AOA benching Mawson and Maguire then bench Mihjalovic next week

    b, Siggy>Zaha and Carroll>Benteke

c, Alonso>Gibson/Rojo and Fletcher>Zaha and go AOA as above

    Heaton
    Alonso Toby Mawson
    Firmino Coutinho Siggy Alli
    IBRA(c) Lukaku Carroll

    Jak Maguire Holgate Fletcher

I now have 2 options of -8 point hits as part of Origi -> Ibra. No WC left. Which one do you see better ?

    A: Origi + Walcott + Baines / Mustafi -> Ibra + De Roon + Yoshida (prepare for DGW37)
    B: Origi + Walcott + Alli -> Ibra + JWP + Son

I now have Eriksen & Kane and also Sanchez.

    How's this looking?

    HENN / Pick
Vert* BARRAGAN Holgate / Stones Yoshi
Eriksen Sanchez Alli ZAHA (c) Haz
    Kaku TEKKERS / Anichebe.

*Going to do Rojo probably for Vert after tomorrow's UEL game to give me 5 DGWers. Allows me Kane for 35 or 36.

Not going for Ibra. Don't believe he'll start all the games. Captaining Zaha currently as a differential DGWer, but fully expecting an 8 pter (4x2).

    Thanks!

I'm thinking of captaining Benteke, Ibra's minutes make it tricky but Zaha could tear it up.

Cheers fella. Think Ibra will be widely brought in and armbanded in my mini league, and I really doubt he'll start so I'm putting my money where my mouth is and not bringing him in. Really think Palace could surprise... Though even a consolation goal would be ace haha

I own these SIX players. But only FOUR can play.

TWO need to be benched this GW... which two???

    B.Davies - CRY (A)
    Alonso - SOU (H)
    Dele - CRY (A)
    Alexis - LEI (H)
    Lukaku - WHU - (A)
    Kane - CRY (A)

      Alonso

The second one either Davies or Alexis (sounds crazy)

Who to bench out of this lot?

    Sanchez
    Alli
    Firmino
    Siggy
    King
    Lukaku
    Kane
    Ibra

Benching King at the moment, but it doesn't feel right at all considering his fixture.

Siggy (poor form) but good fixture though

That's tough. Probably Siggy as both he and SWA are out of form. I have a similar decision with Son and King.

AOA. Any transfers to make? I had planned Lukaku to Ibra but considering Negredo now and captaining. Would consider a hit too. Have WC & BB to play yet.

    Valdes

    Valencia Alonso

Sanchez Alli Siggy Zaha De Roon

    Kane Benteke Lukaku

    Subs Jaku Baines Brunt Amat

    1FT

Either save FT, or Lukaku -> Ibra(c) for me.

      Ibra - bur, mcy, SWA
      Lukaku - whu, CHE

      before you WC

Yep if I take Lukaku out I won't bring him back in.

I'll wait until tomorrow before deciding on Ibra. If did Negredo purely cause chasing in a mini league and would like move him on to Gabiaddini in gw35. WC in gw36.

Feels a bit negative saving a FT with a DGW in play, but with no WC left it's probably the thing to do, right?

    Jaku
    VALENCIA, Bavies, Robertson
    ZAHA, Sanchez, Eriksen, King
    IBRA, BENTEKE, Lukaku

    Grant, Son, Stones, Brunt
Bank 0.0m, 1FT, No WC left

Yes save if no WC got some nice coverage for this week.

Exact same position. It is effectively & points but IMO (assuming you will use all frees or more before 37) unless player you bring in is for 37 as well as 34. Man U defenders have rubbish 37 so It is a no from me. Roll FT it will definitely be handy down the road.
