Team Of The Season – Josh King

The 2015/16 season was something of an anomaly, with so many budget options outperforming their initial starting prices.

But this year, there was really only one player who fulfilled that role – Bournemouth’s Josh King.

After showing flashes of his promise during 2015/16, registering six goals and three assists, King emerged during the second half of this season to become a ‘must-have’ in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

The Norwegian international finished the campaign with 178 points and becomes the third midfielder to make it into our Team of the Season, earning 16.9% of the votes cast.

The Statistics

Beginning the campaign priced at 5.5 in FPL, King initially struggled to grab our attentions, with just two goals and one assist in 14 starts over the first 18 Gameweeks.

When he netted a third goal of the campaign in the 3-0 win over Swansea City in Gameweek 19, King sat in just 27,856 FPL squads and his price had dropped to 5.3.

Another goal soon followed against Watford, but it was his 13-point haul in the 6-3 defeat to Everton, along with the fact that Bournemouth were one of only eight teams to face a fixture in Gameweek 28, that brought King into focus as a viable Fantasy asset.

After maintaining his red-hot form with goals against West Bromwich Albion and Manchester United prior to the Gameweek 28 home clash against West Ham United, over 140,000 FPL managers made the move to draft the midfielder.

He rewarded his owners in spectacular fashion, scoring a hat-trick in the 3-2 win over the Hammers in an 18-point haul.

From that point on, King didn’t look back, blanking in just two of his next nine appearances and tallying five goals and two assists. His price peaked at 6.2 during the last three Gameweeks, and his ownership reached a high of nearly 900,000 by Gameweek 36.

The 25-year-old even added to his legend by posting on social media just before the Gameweek 38 deadline that he would miss the final day clash against Leicester City due to injury.

Ending the season with 16 goals and three assists, he ranked second for points per million value in FPL with a score of 28.7.

During the second half of the campaign, King scored more goals (12) than any other midfielder and sat joint-second among FPL midfielders for shots inside the box, with 35.

The Prospects

On the pitch, the challenge for King will be to ensure he is no one-season wonder.

But from a Fantasy perspective, his classification will be vital as to how we assess his prospects for the campaign ahead.

Thriving as both a support or lone striker during the second half of last term, there’s a strong possibility that King will be listed as a forward in 2017/18.

While this would initially seem a blow to his Fantasy prospects, the dearth of mid-price frontmen in 2016/17 suggests he could still be a factor if, as expected, he comes in around the 7.0 to 8.0 mark.

The imminent arrival of Jermain Defoe from relegated Sunderland is more of a concern.

The 34-year-old forward stated on Tuesday that he had undergone a medical with the Cherries with his move likely to be confirmed next month.

Crucially, Defoe – who netted 15 times for relegated Sunderland in 2016/17 – would be the favourite to earn spot-kick duties and, as the focal point of the attack, will surely dilute King’s appeal.

Elsewhere in the Bournemouth midfield, Ryan Fraser had his moments and earned a reasonable nine assists in his breakout campaign. But King was essentially the only viable option from the Bournemouth attack during the second half of the season, with Junior Stanislas sidelined for the majority of that period.

However, Stanislas – who netted in each of the final three fixtures – could prove a viable budget alternative if he can steer clear of the treatment room, bearing in mind that he bettered King for points per match (5.1 to 4.9) over the season.

With Defoe in the mix, it’s likely that King needs to remain as an FPL midfielder in order to retain our attention. If his classification stays the same, a mid-price King – who converted an eye-catching 23.9% of his scoring opportunities last term – could play a significant role in our plans once again.

My biggest fail of the season ignoring king, I think it was down to being a bitter rovers fan. The lad couldn't hit a barn door for us!

Maybe you should have given him a consistent run through the middle rather than wasting him on the wing?

He did have a reputation of getting lots of chances but not being able to finish for a long time. It seems that's changed in 2017.

He did indeed. Always had pace to burn and it was more a managerial problem than his IMHO. He should have played consistently every game whilst we were in the championship, his pace would have caused major problems. His biggest problem for us was his touch over ran a lot.

He was in United's academy for a reason and was highly rated by Ole (reserves coach). Yes he was still a bit raw in his Blackburn days and football is a result/performance business but sometimes you've just got to nurture players in their best positions and hope they come good. He always had the pace and strength so definitely had the right psychical attributes to succeed in the Championship.

I feel a bit sorry for Rovers fans. Venky's Chicken have zero footballing awareness and have completely ruined a traditional top league club. Shambolic owners.

I'll be entirely honest, I think there's more going on here.

FSG have not struck me as the type who want to pour money into transfers unless they're recouping it from sales. Maybe Summer will prove me wrong, but I just have a very weird sense about it all. They aren't complete duffers, they're a billionaire sports group. That they couldn't abide the rules, when apparently they were willing to meet valuation and wage demands all just seems a bit iffy to me.

Same with Salah. As I've said, Roma had made it fairly clear (I thought) that the price was £40 million. Next thing the word coming out from the Pool corner is they've increased it to £40 million instead. I'm just a bit suspicious tbh. Still, long old Summer left, chin up and all that.

I've defended FSG and it remains to be see whether this was their fault as they like to bend rules. 2 months to put things right but I certainly won't be excited irrespective of who we sign now. van Dijk was the one.

Completely fair, I've just got my own misgivings about them but they may well prove me wrong this transfer window.

I mean there's evidence of this. Our net spend is usually negative! 😀

I think they're cautious about not getting burned again after the Carroll saga. Ultimately I think their game plan is to try and cement Liverpool as a CL club and then sell up as soon as that's done. This is fine by me if they do end up reinstating us into Europe's elite, it's symbiotic. Our wage bill is relatively low and they're definitely still conscious of it - so meeting van Dijk's wage demands did seem a little fishy to me. I thought perhaps they we were going for a significant outlay this Summer to make sure we get CL again next season and then sell...

I do think we're going to be more stern, and have been, regarding transfer negotiations. We're just their bit on the side though, they're not overseeing the day-to-day running of the club from the other side of the pond so I can quite easily see why they wouldn't of been in the loop regarding transfer specifics! I blame all this Twitter and ITK nonsense. Tapping is done by every club. If we didn't create such a hysteria every time we're linked with a player and start speculating/leaking on transfer specifics and just let the clubs negotiate things would run a lot smoother. Now it seems the clubs hand can be seen by all.

Funny enough the 200k wages stuck out to me as well 😉

But your points are fair. Though this ITK nonsense happens to more than just Pool. Most clubs ignore it. So I wonder if someone higher up at Pool was leaking this and Southampton found out? You must allow me indulge my conspiracy theorist side 😉

Never been a fan of all the rubbish with people acting 'in the know' with transfers. Wouldn't say most clubs ignore it, rather most clubs don't bother with it. United-linked journos (Luckhurst) are only good for things like team news, but generally don't have a clue regarding transfers because the club haven't leaked transfer stuff since Moyes.

I need some serious work on my transfers/hits to make top 1k this season. Comparing my stats to Ben Crabtree's: Took more than double his hits, 10 more transfers and his Total Immediate Points Gained from Transfers totally smashed my numbers. Guess that's why I ended up at 67k.

    Mine

    Transfers
    Total Transfers : 52
    Total Points Hits : 68
    Total Auto Subs : 18
Total Auto Subs Points : 53
Total Immediate Points Gained from Transfers : 264

    Ben Crabtree

    Total Transfers : 42
    Total Points Hits : 32
    Total Auto Subs : 12
Total Auto Subs Points : 34
Total Immediate Points Gained from Transfers : 407

Go back through the season and ask yourself whether the transfer you made was a good transfer or not. You could put this down to points total or just whether it was a smart decision at the time. Now find out how many of them were for hits and FTs. Then do the same for my brother Crabtree. You'll feel better.

I'm absolutely fuming with whats happened. He was the perfect signing, he ditched City and Chelsea for us and we still managed to stuff it up.

This is supposed to be the biggest window in the clubs history and so far we've managed to sign a teenager, miss out on another one to Spurs, miss out on our main target and will possibly miss out on another big target too due to haggling over 7m.

At least we still have solid Soton defensive picks for next season

It is not beyond the realms of possibility that the deal will still go through but I think tonights statement is Liverpool trying to avoid a transfer ban or points deduction

        1. Lawrø
          • 12 Years
          6 years, 11 months ago

Yeah, avoid the ban by publicly admitting guilt. If they were so worried I think they'd be trying to cover it up instead. I also don't think Liverpool are publishing this statement because they're sorry either... Wouldn't surprise me if Southampton upped the price in order to drop the complaint and this is Liverpool publicly telling them to do one. VvD then proceeds to hand in a transfer request and later on (when the transfer window actually opens) the clubs get back to the negotiating table and hash out a deal. I'm speculating that this is Liverpool effectively saying that they're not going to be taken for fools over the price.

On paper yes, but doesn't he play in a back 3 at Napoli? Can he fit in well in a new league, in a system that exposes their defenders and with only one mate next to him?

It's hardly the end of the world even if it doesn't rumble on. Although he is the top target there's still dozens of good CBs out there who would improve Liverpool anyway, and they'd cost a lot less than van Dijk.

Best advice I can give is to avoid all rumours, speculation and itk's etc. Don't believe what your club says, especially around season ticket renewal time and what will be, will be. Unless it's Man City they're all full of bs at the end of the day.
Owners treat fans as though they are imbeciles and unfortunately we tend to lap it up because we love our clubs. .

Nationally I would like Labour to win or even claw back some seats, but locally I know the Tory candidate will win easily in my area which is strange because its usually been a safe Labour seat.

As I was musing above if this was a straight National vote (like a referendum ) it would be better but this constituency based nonsense we have masks any feelings towards the number of votes the non winning candidate gets. I do think there is a massive Labour vote out there, just the Tory one will be bigger per constituency.

If he wins it'd be nothing short of a miracle.

The country is absolutely crying out for a unifying centrist party with a competent leader. I wonder whether reasonable Tory and Labour MPs could be tempted to form a new party given how utterly woeful May is and how poor Corbyn is at uniting his party and being realistic with his policies.

      Still voting for him tho.

Can't wait to slag my smug Liverpool fanboy workmate tomorrow. Surprised Liverpool pulled out of the VVD deal, is it dead in the water?

Noting wrong with constituency based system it is a bedrock of democracy

The UK should move to a proportional representation vote imo the first past the post system means that when the guy you voted for is eliminated then your vote is burned instead of your vote being being passed to your 2nd preference

A PR system would give a fairer representation of the peoples views and a wider verity of candidates imo
