Scout Report – Vicente Iborra

Leicester City made their second major transfer move of the summer with the signing of Sevilla midfielder Vicente Iborra for a reported fee of £12million.

The 29-year-old put pen to paper on a four-year deal, with head coach Craig Shakespeare revealing his joy at being able to add a player with such vast experience to his squad:

“With Vicente, he is one the recruitment department have had earmarked for a while, rated him very highly. Then to meet him and see him out in training, his pedigree is there for all to see. We spoke about what he brings, he was captain of Sevilla, the leadership qualities, but what came across when I spoke to him was his aims, and hopes. He wants to be a team player, he wants to be part of a team. He is not an individual. They are values I rate very highly as a manager.”

The History

Iborra came through the ranks at Spanish side Levante and made his first-team debut in a Copa del Rey clash against Getafe in January 2008. His La Liga bow, against Real Madrid, came four days later.

He remained with the club despite their relegation that year and was a key member of the side that helped earn promotion back to La Liga in 2009/10.

The midfielder established himself as a regular starter during the 2011/12 campaign, and two strong seasons with Levante helped convince Sevilla to sign Iborra in August 2013.

His four-year spell in Seville was a huge success.

He picked up three consecutive UEFA Europa League winners medals and three top-five finishes in La Liga, and was also named club captain.

Iborra produced 30 goals and 13 assists in 172 matches in all competitions, but last season found his first-team opportunities limited, managing just 12 league starts, which paved the way for the move to Leicester.

The Prospects

Having featured for Sevilla as a defensive, central and attacking midfielder, along with a few appearances in central defence, Iborra will certainly offer Shakespeare plenty of versatility.

Standing six foot three inches tall, Iborra is perhaps not the archetypal Spanish midfielder and, when used in a central support role behind a striker, has even drawn comparisons with Manchester United’s Marouane Fellaini.

Iborra is very strong in the air – he won 64% of his aerial duels last season – and will provide a different kind of threat for the Foxes.

He also possesses good predatory instincts, having scored exactly seven goals in each of his last three league campaigns despite predominantly operating in a deeper midfield role.

While he can appear slightly ungraceful, Iborra is technically sound, with his adaptability illustrating his football intelligence. His physicality, meanwhile, should be well suited to the Premier League.

Under Shakespeare, Leicester generally lined up in either a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-4-1-1 formation during the final months of last season.

Iborra offers an alternative to Danny Drinkwater or Wilfred Ndidi in central midfield and can also compete with Shinji Okazaki in the central support role. Islam Slimani and Leonardo Ulloa are also options to tuck in behind or play alongside Jamie Vardy, though the potential arrival of Kelechi Iheanacho from Man City will also bolster the Foxes’ options in the final third.

The Spaniard could also play in a deeper role if Shakespeare considers using a 4-1-4-1 system, either in tougher away matches or against the leading clubs, with the significant outlay made on Iborra suggesting he will command a regular starting berth.

While Vardy will be the leading attacking option from the Foxes, Iborra may offer a possible alternative in midfield, with the 29-year-old priced at 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 8.3 in Sky Sports.

With Riyad Mahrez’ future at the King Power Stadium in doubt, Iborra could come into contention alongside the likes of Demarai Gray, Marc Albrighton and possibly Ndidi as cheaper options.

Iborra impressively averaged a shot every 47.52 minutes last term, which was better than both Ndidi (49.10) and Albrighton (115.48), although slightly inferior to Gray (38.48).

The England U21 international did only register five attempts from inside the box, though, compared to 24 for the Spaniard.

But the former Sevilla player doesn’t look to boast much assist potential, only producing a key pass every 92.06 minutes. That was, unsurprisingly, less than wide men Albrighton (51.60) and Gray (61.12), although significantly better than Ndidi (253.67).

Then again, Iborra didn’t play in a central support role last season, so those numbers should be a lot more impressive in that position.

One negative factor surrounding Iborra’s prospects is his disciplinary record. He picked up 34 yellow and two red cards over the past four seasons, committing a foul every 37.77 minutes last term.

Leicester’s opening schedule (ars, BHA, mun, CHE, hud, LIV) perhaps mean Iborra is unlikely to come onto our radars, at least initially.

That tough start will hand Fantasy managers the ideal opportunity to see whether Iborra can cement a regular spot in the starting XI and, just as pertinently, what position he’ll be taking up.

Iborra’s goal scoring record means he is definitely one to track, and if he is kindly priced and plays in an advanced role, he could well be a factor in our seasons.

Going the other way, at the the moment, just dumped Alli out. Going for cheap midfielders for value, fixtures, and price rise potential. Have Kane & Lukaku, so not much need for add'l captains. 3.5m in the bank, and might be brave enough to keep it there for gw1. Could easily run back to Alli if pre-season indicates any of my cheapies are not nailed on.

Great attackers but I think it's costing you too much elsewhere. Do you really wank Ake, Dunk, and Knockeart starting consistently? I wonder if downgrading Laca might be best for the team as a whole, as it will allow for a better midfield and slightly more money in the defence.

      DEF: no argument
MID: Ozil? really? hmmm Romeu will be outscored by Carroll if nailed, which he will be
      FW: Very good.

Looks surprisingly good for Sanchez and Kane in the same team. I'd worry about Rooney's nailedness, and I wonder if the Sanchez money could be better used to upgrade a Palace option, but I like it. I wonder if Sanchez and Benteke for Sane and Lukaku might be preferable..but an interesting side.

The defence is in my opinion largely spent on the wrong players. Zaha is overpriced (get RLC) and Sanchez does not offer value for money. Replace Rooney and bring in a Man City attacker.

There was this one time taking acid while camping on the feet of the himilayas , I was taking a leisurely stroll contemplating life and all the strange goings on around me when out of nowhere this Shepard appeared. At first it appeared he was holding a staff for herding sheep but as he got closer I realised to my delight it was a large red and white candy cane . As he approached I asked could I taste his candy cane to which he replied " my son this is no normal candy cane , once you've laid your lips on this cane everything you've ever known to be real will be questioned. Now me not being one to shy away of a bit of mystery said let's be f kn having some then . As I stuck my tongue out and leaned toward the cane the strangest thing happened

It's difficult to reply to everyone when it all goes so fast, 7 years ago it wasn't an issue. RMT's get the membership money flowing end of the day, otherwise we'd have more specialist articles. RMT's should all post in the latest community article as a general unwritten rule, boom problem solved.

It is surprising but I think that there are three big issues -
        1) Alli is underrpriced, and offers a consistency and the potential for improvement
        2) Lukaku has a fantastic set of opening fixtures and is 1.0 cheaper
        3) Spurs are not at WHL, and may suffer given their excellent home form last season.

Of course there is a counterargument to that one in that he has been playing international tournaments every other summer so far so he has never had a break during the summer which may have tired him out.

    Thoughts on this one please?

    Foster (Myhill)
    Trippier, Cedric, Bertrand, Kolasinac, Alonso,
Alli, De Bruyne, (Ritchie), (RLC), (Carroll)
    Lukaku, Lacazette, Abraham
    0.5 itb

Thinking is that can switch between Ritchie and Abraham based on fixtures or form. Don't see much in the 4.5 def for points, the extra spent for a combination of attack-minded defenders with higher CS potential will be worth it. On the right track?

Sticking with it will be hard as I think there will be horror weeks.
Don't think it is worth transferring these high value defenders too much or you just end up missing attacking hauls.

Thanks, yes you are right, the hardest part will be to see it through and not abandon it if a midfielder scores a double in GW1. Still may revert to a 3-4-3 yet but on paper I thought it looked pretty strong.

Will look soon. The first article was great and reflects my current thinking

Luk Kane and Lacasette up top with Sane Pedro Tadic and Loftus as a playing 4th. All depends on Loftus of course.

Easy to jump off one big striker if a big mid starts hitting it/ viable cheap 3rd striker appears ( come on JRod!) plus that set up allows 3 decent defenders, Lindehof Cedric and Tripper.

      Enjoying the blog as always!

There are a couple of little downsides I have thought of with the big up top. It makes it very difficult to buy any Liverpool players. They have no big hitting striker to bring in, and the formation rules out bringing in any of their mids apart from Lallana or wynaldum.
Might concern a few, although last years winner would not lose any sleep over that little problem

        1. Joggers Nipple
          • 14 Years

True, for me, im ok starting without any Lpool but if Mane looks like hes back to his best hes the one who ithersts me.

Again its early days but if Ramsey does seems to be back and good, and im not really sold on that, and a decent cheap 3rd striker appears I guess sacrifice Lacassete, get Ramsey in and cheap mid to Mane.

          So many ands!

          For me key things are-
          - Is Loftus a 4th mid
          - Is Ramsey a stater and scoring
          - Could i trust Ozil
          - Ok to go without Lpool?
          - If a decent 3rd striker appears in the 6.5 range.

I get it mate you look at the positives of anyone new coming into your club i am exactly the same.. Walker's a decent player all in all.. an absolute flyer on that right side his delivery isn't great and defensively suspect.. Mendy looks more of an all rounder and from what i have seen great delivery on him.. really good player.. we play the Galaxy this time tomo night when is our game?

Playing on July 20th. That's our first preseason game and I believe it's your third (or second) so I already have a ready made excuse 😉 gonna watch United tomorrow on TV, see if any prospects arise. Really looking forward to the derby though, can't wait to see what Pep's thinking

Prefer Carroll or any nailed 4.5. As long as they get 2 points a game as a 5th mid I'll take that

This - or RLC. They are so rarely called upon, that I think the 4.5 makes more sense. I expect Matic at United will be very reserved too - he won't have a Kante next to him.

It is a balancing act. Spending more in one area will always reduce that in another I guess what we need to do is identify those players who are underpriced and buy them to maximise what we can do in other positions to hopefully get better scores.

So it is all about the whole rather than the individual parts

    3. HammersFan

Just find the perfect balance and you will be ok.

IMO Alonzo might not outscore all 7.0 mids but I think he will outscore most of them. I could be wrong though

    5. Joggers Nipple
      • 14 Years

      Just my initial thoughts-

      - There are potential bargains/ value in both defense and mid. Alot with 'potential' for sure but not guaranteed of course
      - Up front, apart from the big hitters, little value imo. Not interested personally in an 8m BOUR striker.
      - Currently thinking of starting with a big 3 up top, some Sane, Pedro and Tadic in the middle and some decent defenders. Easy to cash in a big striker if one of the big mids seems vital or a decent cheap 3rd striker appears.
