Scout Report – Jacob Murphy

Newcastle United followed up the signings of midfielder Christian Atsu and defender Florian Lejeune by completing their third major summer purchase with the addition of Norwich City winger Jacob Murphy for a reported fee of £12 million.

The England U21 international joins the club that he scored twice against last season in the Championship, and Magpies boss Rafa Benitez believes the 22-year-old can really thrive in his new environment:

“He’s a young and talented player and hopefully he can develop even more here. We hope he can show us the passion, commitment and ability that he showed in the Championship last season… It’s the type of player we are looking for.”

The History

Murphy joined Norwich’s youth set-up at the age of 11 and was a member of the side that won the 2012/13 FA Youth Cup.

He made his professional debut as a substitute in an FA Cup tie against Fulham in January 2014, before taking in loan spells at League One side Swindon Town and League Two outfit Southend United during the second half of the 2013/14 season.

The midfielder then joined fellow Championship club Blackpool on loan, producing two goals and a single assist in nine appearances, and also spent time at League One sides Scunthorpe United and Colchester United, where he registered four goals and three assists over 11 matches.

The Canaries decided to send Murphy on a season-long loan to League One outfit Coventry City, where he enjoyed a very successful campaign, totalling nine goals and 10 assists in 40 outings.

Murphy finally got his chance at Carrow Road last season, producing eight goals and eight assists over his 37 league appearances.

He has represented England at U18, U19, U20 and U21 levels and was part of the squad that reached the semi-finals of this summer’s UEFA U21 European Championship.

The Prospects

After making Atsu’s loan move permanent earlier this summer, the addition of Murphy will provide the Magpies with another creative threat out wide.

In Matt Ritchie, Newcastle have an industrious player who can not only provide goals, but who also has the ability to deliver quality into the box.

The former Bournemouth wide man isn’t blessed with pace, though, so Murphy, who is capable of playing on either flank, although he played predominantly down the right for Norwich, should provide a good balance if he operates on the left for Benitez’s side.

Murphy, a boyhood Newcastle fan, is quick, direct, and also has an eye for goal.

When asked what he can bring to his new club, Murphy took the opportunity to outline these qualities and underline his suitability as a Fantasy asset.

“What will I bring? An attacking flair. Pace. I’m very direct and I like to shoot. I like to provide chances for the team. I’m an attacking wide midfielder so I will try my best to get goals and assists for this club.”

Although he is still very raw, and can drift in and out of matches, the 22-year-old looks to have the attributes to thrive under the tutelage of Benitez, who should ensure that Murphy doesn’t neglect his defensive duties, something he has been guilty of in the past.

That will be important, given that Benitez favours a 4-2-3-1 formation in which his wide players need to track back and offer protection in front of the full-backs.

Looking at Murphy’s underlying statistics from last season, he impressively averaged a shot every 29.82 minutes – better than both Ritchie (31.67) and Atsu (43.64).

But while Murphy provided a stronger goal threat, he only managed to produce a key pass every 61.02 minutes, inferior to both Ritchie (44.34) and Atsu (54.17).

The England U21 international may lack slightly in the creativity stakes then, but his goal threat, and specifically the quality of his finishing, make him an intriguing Fantasy prospect.

Murphy’s potential is likely to see him come in at between 5.5 and 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), and given Ritchie has the majority of set-piece duties and is on penalties for the Magpies, he may need to come in at the cheaper end of the scale to tempt investment.

But Newcastle attackers are certainly on the radar, with their early fixtures (TOT hud WHM swa STO bha) very favourable following the daunting opener with Spurs.

Dwight Gayle and Ritchie are proven commodities, however, while Murphy has only played one full season in the Championship, so it is difficult to look past the more experienced pair from the off.

Newcastle’s pre-season matches will hopefully provide some insight as to how much faith Benitez has in Murphy.

The potential is clear with his valuation a key factor, but a lack of experience makes him a target to monitor, with team-mates Ritchie and Gayle currently the more assured options.

Could do with an extra 1.5 million
      (I know who couldnt)

Is Ayew (SWA) really viable instead of Gayle (NEW)?

Well he should play. Don't expect him to match Gayle's points at all. I have ayew as bench fodder atm.

Well my thinking at the min is Gayle 3rd striker unless poor fixture so then it's Carrol (SWA) as 5th mid or a 3rd and 4th Def from Francis, Dunk, Mee.

Or Ayew as 3rd striker and I bring in Phillips for Carrol.

            Thoughts?

So it's 6.5 range striker with Carroll bench fodder vs 6.0 mid with ayew bench fodder. Personally I would go with ince or Philips over Gayle. If you can stretch to tadic even better.

Why is it taking so long for Joe Hart to be priced in FPL? Hope he's 4.5m but pessimistic.

A good fpl pick doesn't need to be a good player. Good players can be bad fpl picks.

Reasons why I will be starting with Morata.
I hold my hands up, I am a Chelsea fan so its only fair to assume there may be a bit of bias on my part, and a will for him to become a huge success at Chelsea. I also admit I am disappointed we didn’t sign Lukaku, but by no means do I think Morata is the second best option and just an ‘alternative’. A lot of comments I’ve read have written him off already which I think is silly, anyway here are my reasons for starting with him.
                  - One of the strongest arguments is Conte himself. Having now signed the player twice, Morata has never actually played a single game under Conte. Yet its clear there is a strong bond between player and manager, with Morata recently stating in an interview “ Conte is the manager who most ‘bet’ on me, without even ever having had me in his team. “I’m very conscious of that…He knows me better than I could imagine, I’m sure, and that’s important. It motivates you to work hard, train well.” He also added “I feel indebted to him because he’s the coach that most trusted in me, most wanted me, who made me feel I could perform at the highest level. And yet I’ve never had the fortune to actually work with him”. He has the backing of the manager, a lot to prove and no doubt will want to return the faith Conte has shown him.
                  - He is our no1 striker and will spearhead Chelsea next season. I think it’s fair to say that whoever plays in the current Chelsea team as the lone striker will get plenty of opportunities to score goals and create goals. But I also believe he’s a very good fit for Chelsea right now. He’s a player who can hold the ball very well, he can create space, his movement and intelligence of the game is excellent, has a lot of pace to run in behind defenders, he’s strong and good in the air. I can already picture a defence splitting ball from deep by Fabregas, with Morata running through on goal, or a counter attack with the pace of Hazard, Pedro and Morata running at an opponents defence!
                  - -He’s only 24! He’s at the age now where he can really push on as a striker and cement himself as one of the best strikers in the premier league. He boasted the best minutes-per-goal record of any Madrid player last season (1 goal every 89mins), was third only to Ronaldo and Messi for shots inside the box per 90 (3.2 shots). He’s got champions league experience and scored in the Champions League final, as well as being Spain’s top scorer for U19, U21 and senior championship level.
I could go on but im trying not to drag it out too much. I hope some people found this useful of sorts and I guess for a lot of people it will still be a wait and see how he does and how he adapts to the league. The majority will stick with the more proven likes of Lukaku etc. Of course there’s still an element of risk starting with Morata. It was a risk for Chelsea to sign him, but it was an educated one and one that has my full support.

Too early to say. Worth monitoring. I don't see a clear way he fits into MP's team, given that he struggles at CM but isn't a conventional winger. BUT his set pieces are outstanding and may be reason enough for MP to modify his style/approach. JWP certainly isn't nailed at this stage but would be decent value if he became a mainstay.

The problem for him is he tends to look a bit lightweight in the pivot and Davis is a very experienced and consistent performer in that role. I much preferred JWP playing a more 'Beckham' style role on the right at the backend of last season but he may not have enough pace/explosiveness to convince MP.

It sounds to me that Morata is far more suited to Chelse's style of play than Lukaku was. I think it's worked out best for both clubs. Can't wait to see how he gets on.

                    Nice. IMO Trippier/Monreal -> Cedric and then Sane -> Salah/Coutinho, I wouldn't have 2 City upfront.

                  Pick 2 from these...

                  A, Milner

Milner is the only good option there tbh. Kompany might score some headers but city's defence is questionable. Bailly not nailed. I would say A and C

Colback wasn't nailed last season so doubtful he will be this season. Last season Rafa paired Shelvey with Hayden when he could and Diame played behind Gayle. Diame may play deeper this season as he was underwhelming in the number 10 role. Shelvey is probably the only nailed player in central midfield at the minute.

Aarons could break through this year, but that's been said for a few seasons now and he invariably gets injured. Now he's competing with Rafa's own signings - Ritchie, Atsu and Murphy for a winger's spot.

                  A) Milner
                  B) Lindelof
                  C) Walker

I'm leaning towards Milner cause of penalties.

Oh. Since you have a 6 mil defender, why don't you get someone cheaper, eg. Cedric/Maguire and then invest elsewhere.

                  Foster
                  Trippier, Monreal, Lindelof, Cedric

                  Fabianski, 4.0Def, Carroll, Romeu

Feel like it would be too difficult to switch to a midfielder who finds form, thoughts?

Should be good for CS, but there's no oustanding choice.

Bailley no goal threat and Valencia a little pricey, Lindelof a little risky.

                    Could be worth it though.

I'm good thanks. On some holiday time finally after a hellish few weeks. 🙂

On Lindelof, I think it's dependent on partnerships developing. Given Mou's comments and how last year went. Remember Jones and Rojo built a good partnership and benched Bailley for a chunk.

I do think he'll be a starter, but with limited goal threat anyway, and being a bitter abu, Im happy without.

Which option looks better, for start of season at least?

                  Forster (Elliot)
                  Cedric-Ake-Luiz-Trippier (Hunemeier)
                  Zaha-Fabregas/Willian- Coutinho (RLC-Carroll)
                  Kane-Lacazette-Jesus

                  OR

                  Foster for Forster (Elliot)
                  Same backline
                  KdB-Zaha-Fab/Willian-Coutinho (RLC)

So basically Mustafi + RLC vs Capoue + Lowton? First one. Maybe consider Daniels though, Mustafi doesn't have a lot of goal threat.

I've started with Zaha but willing to jump ship if needed

Fabregas not on that list but is top of the members RMT for 7m midfielder.

I'm going for Ramsey (also have Willian). He was great at end of last season and in pre-season.

                  Really struggling this year.

Must have changed my team about 100 times!

Still not convinced. What do we think?

                  Foster (Elliot)

                  Cedric Dawson Trippier Ake (Rosenior)

                  KDB Willian Alli (RLC) (TC)

                  Gayle Lukaku Kane
