The Numbers Game – Southampton

Next up in our summer series of members’ articles, offering in-depth team-by-team analysis are Southampton. A side that carry extra significance ahead of the new campaign given their exceptionally kind early fixtures.

To get underway, we’ll analyse performance at a team level and attempt to spot trends or improvements. We then delve into the player data, analysing the key individuals as we scour for potential targets ahead of next month’s Gameweek 1 deadline.

In addition, we’ll also focus on any specific periods of interest brought about by tactical changes or breakout Fantasy performances – in this case we’ll focus on the Saints’ home/away displays, investigating a trend that saw them score just 17 goals in front of their own supporters.

Southampton finished in sixth spot under Ronald Koeman back in 2015/16 – a total of 63 points was just three points behind Manchester City in fourth. But the Dutchman’s decision to move to Everton proved detrimental to their prospects, with replacement Claude Puel struggling to maintain those standards.

Despite claiming eight place, Southampton bagged just 46 points and found the net on 41 occasions – a tally that bettered only the bottom five and well behind the 59 strikes under Koeman.

Really sad that I had to downgrade KDB to Sane to fit everyone in

    Any quick thoughts ?

    Foster (Elliot)
    Valencia, Cedric, Francis (Lascelles, 4.0)
    Sane, Salah, Zaha, Willian (Caroll)
    Chicharito, Lukaku, Kane

This match wouldn't make me feel good about relying on Sane. But we will see.

Quick recap as I imagine different teams will come out of the dressing room:

    - City playing 352 with both Jesus and Kun up front and KDB working behind them
    - as seen from his time at Madrid, Danilo plays better at left even though he is right footed. Doesnt warrant a pick as he doesnt get front and is focused on defence
    - similarly Walker played a pretty defensive role tonight but that might be due to opponent. Still a much better pick than Danilo going upfront
    - Kompany is the base of the team defensive wise but there is still a lot of work to be done. Through balls looked like they pose a lot of problem and someone quicker than Benzema will give them a lot of problems. If Kompany injures himself Citys defence looks like a no go zone.
    - Ederson is a major upgrade over Bravo. Great positioning.
    - KDB looked a very reasonable pick. Still probably the best last pass in the league and will probably be used to break down the buses either with his long shot or with his through balls. 352 looked great on him with Toure and WBs covering.
    - Kun and Jesus both up front but it was GJ that looked further up with Kun playing more of a support striker role. Both went quite deep for the ball if needed.
    - no idea where do Sane and Sterling fit into 352. Can see them utilised as WBs actually but not with the talent they brought this summer. A wait and see.
    - FPL wise, Jesus takes the cake for now with KDB following closely. Aguero still a decent pick but Jesus costs a mil less. Sane and Sterling a wait and see for now, especially if they keep with 352. A lot rides on Kompany staying fit in defence but he looks the best pick for now. Need to see them play a worse opponent to see how WBs fit.

Have Sané right now and will monitor this, worrying in that aspect, good from the Kun ownership aspect.

      Stones look quite good too.

In other news Shane Kluivert just signed his first sponsor deal with Nike. At the ripe old age of nine.

guys, currently my team reads as per below, and i have 0.5 in the bank that i am saving for the 'little pea' after observation and awaiting GW3...I just need a suggestion on whether to go with the current team, or swap 6.0(either ritchie, knockeart, Lingard or Stanislas)+Jesus with KDB+Gayle...with the current setup, i will need to swap Austin for Chicha, which I am reluctant to do currently due to SOU amazing fixtures...thoughts??

    GK: DDG/Elliott
    DEF: Trippier/Cedric/Daniels/Mee/4.0
    MID: Alli/Salah/Phillips/Willian/6.0
    ST: Lukaku/Jesus/Austin

Looks like GJ the sole player up front in 2nd half. Sterling and KDB behind him.

I don't know what you're smoking mate he's been brilliant. Otamendi's error on that play.

He's a good shot stopper so what so is Hart.

I've seen so many errors from him top strikers will capitalise on keepers mistakes.

Hard playing with a different defence in front of you every 45 minutes. Communication will always be a problem this early.

Appreciate the updates on City game, any thoughts on lineup? Looking at whether KDB or Lukaku ends up making final cut. Here is current lineup:

    Starters:
    Foster
    Trippier, Cedric, Kompany
Mkhitaryan, Ramsey, Dele Alli, KDB, Willian
    Kane, Rooney

    Bench: Fabianski, Dunk, Hunemeir, Fletcher

Can someone explain why Manchester United isn't called Trafford United? Genuinely curious as geographically our noisy neighbors aren't in the city of Manchester.

Starting to reconsider my stance on Aguero.

If Pep decides Aguero doesn't fit the new city I trust Pep's judgment on players. City look fine without him.

Only pre season. I think people have underestimated pep. They give players a few years to accommodate, pep will only need one

Eh not really fair to say that.

Conte won it in his first season. Pep made the choice to splurge on stones and Bravo

I don't want man city to play anymore pre season games. If they do , I hope no one on here watches. I've had 3 city players the whole time and thought I was going to get a jump on everyone. Maybe not so much now. They look super. Which ones though?

    Any thoughts on this squad

    Foster Fabianski
    Trippier Cedric Smalling Daniels Hunemeir
    Salah Willian Capoue Ince Loftus-Cheek
    Kane lukako Morata

Mids are weak but can upgrade by downgrading a forward later in the game.
