Moving Target – Izzy Brown

Brighton and Hove Albion have bolstered their attacking options ahead of their maiden Premier League campaign with the signing of Chelsea’s Izzy Brown on a season-long loan.

The 20-year-old was part of the Huddersfield Town squad that gained promotion to the top flight last season, and Seagulls boss Chris Hughton believes the versatile Brown can continue his development at the Amex Stadium:

“He can play on either flank and he’s done that right the way through his upbringing. He went out on loan to Holland in what was his first loan and played out on the left. At Rotherham, he played up front and at Huddersfield Town he played at number ten. He gives us good scope in the front areas, he’s developing and hopefully, he can develop here.”

The History

Brown began his youth career with a brief spell at Leicester City before joining West Bromwich Albion in 2011 at the age of 14.

He made his professional debut for the Baggies as a substitute in a 3-2 win over Wigan Athletic in May 2013, becoming the second youngest player in Premier League history, aged just 16 years and 117 days old.

In the summer of 2013, Brown signed for Chelsea, although to date he has only made one senior appearance for the Blues, ironically against West Brom in May 2015.

In order to gain first-team experience, Brown was sent on a season-long loan to Dutch outfit Vitesse Arnhem in July 2015.

He racked up 22 league appearances in total, making 12 starts, but only registered one goal and an assist.

Last season, Brown spent the first half of the campaign on loan at Championship side Rotherham United.

He was a regular starter for the Millers and made 20 appearances, managing three goals and five assists.

He then joined Huddersfield in January 2017 for the remainder of the season and produced five goals in 18 matches as the Terriers gained promotion via the play-offs.

Brown has represented England at U16, U17, U19 and U20 levels, scoring 10 goals in 36 outings.

The Prospects

Given Brighton’s relatively small squad, the addition of the versatile Brown will provide Hughton with a number of different options in attack.

The 20-year-old played predominantly as a support striker last season, although he is equally comfortable operating on either flank or even as a centre forward.

Brown is very adept at finding pockets of space in between the lines and is at his most dangerous on the half-turn and driving at the opposition defence.

While not blessed with blistering pace, Brown possesses quick feet and the vision to pick the right pass in the final third.

He also offers a goal threat, particularly when cutting in from the left – the position he started in Brighton’s 3-0 win over Southend United on Tuesday night – and has a knack for scoring from distance.

Last season, Hughton generally favoured one of Jamie Murphy, Solly March or Jiri Skalak on the left of a four-man midfield, with Anthony Knockaert the regular starter down the right.

Summer signing Pascal Gross could well get the nod in a central attacking midfield role if Hughton opts for a slightly more conservative 4-4-1-1 formation in the top flight, but Brown may also come into the reckoning in that position.

The 33-year-old Glenn Murray currently appears the favourite to lead the line for the Seagulls, although it’s likely Hughton will bring in another striker before the transfer window closes.

Brown has been handed a price tag of 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), placing him in the same price bracket as Gross, with Knockaert slightly more expensive on the budget at 6.0.

He’s priced more favourably in Sky Sports, though, coming in at 7.0, compared to 7.3 for Gross and a whopping 8.5 for Knockaert.

Comparing the trio’s underlying statistics from last season, Brown averaged a shot every 46.3 minutes, unsurprisingly inferior to Knockaert (35.6) but stronger than Gross (53.55).

Gross was hugely creative for Ingolstadt last term, though, averaging a key pass every 27.9 minutes, outshining both Knockaert (40.5) and Brown (54.47).

The big disadvantage for Brown is that he’s not expected to compete for set-piece duties, with Knockaert, Gross and left-back Markus Suttner ahead of him in that queue.

With Knockaert an injury concern for the start of the season after damaging ankle ligaments during a pre-season friendly, Brown looks to have a good chance of forcing his way into the starting XI.

Brighton begin their campaign with a difficult home fixture against Manchester City before a more favourable run of matches (lei wat WBA bou NEW) up to Gameweek 6.

Investing in the Seagulls attack could pay off based on the opening schedule, although with four teams scoring more goals than the 74 that Hughton’s men managed last season, there is a concern over their potency in the final third.

Hughton is a fairly conservative coach – his Norwich City side only scored 41 goals in 2012/13 and a meagre 28 when they were relegated the following season.

As a result, there may be no guarantees that an attacking player such as Brown will start week-in, week-out as a wide player in a four-man midfield, hindering his Fantasy appeal unless he nails down a more advanced role.

At this point, it’s Gross and Knockaert (when he’s back to full fitness), who look the safer bets, then, although there’s little doubt that Brown has the talent to be a factor over the course of the season.

Should he get those regular starts and be given the freedom to express himself, he could yet emerge as a viable budget option.

If Rashford was nailed, would you dismiss him due to being reverse oop?
I could very well be grasping at straws in my attempt to avoid spending 11.5m on Lukaku, but are the following arguments something to consider?

    - He is on some set pieces (corners and maybe some FKs after the one he scored in EL semi? Who knows about pens. Lukaku is only 10/14 in his career. Rash is 3/3 and Pogba 5/6 according to transfermarkt)
    - Usually looks like their most dangerous player imo (even playing wide)
    - Mourinho has stated he will use 3-5-2 occasionally this season, allowing him to play CF
    - Mourinho's teams usually doesn't trash the opposition. Shutting up shop 1 or 2 up sounds familiar. So is paying 11.5 for Lukaku on the expensive side?
    - It's not like he will operate as a pure winger. He's playing as an inside forward a lot and will get in the box
    - His production was not all that last year, but remember he was in and out of the team early on and did not really show confidence until the latter part of the season. And his production improved subsequently.
    - Mourinho trusts him and want him to succeed
    - Not a ton of great Strikers (even with Chicharito added) in that price range
    - "Can create his own shot" with his pace and ability to pass defenders

Are these valid arguments (assuming he's nailed), or should we continue to dismiss him due to the reverse OOP factor?

Don't care if he's reverse OOP, I only care if he's nailed on and scoring points or not.

I had the same thought earlier today and tried Lukaku->Rashford.. I liked the upgrades I could do with that 4m!
Rashford looks a lot more lively than Lukaku, truth is.
But Lukaku has proven he has that killer instinct, that can make him get goals with his strength too.
I wish Rashford shows more and Lukaku less, to justify a possible switch.

In my mind, your forwards should be filled by players that are the talisman of their teams. Players that have to be played every single game because the manager can't see the team scoring without them. Players like Lukaku. Rashford will likely be rotated and dropped based on form. For that price, you would be better off looking at chicarito, benteke and Defoe who will be essential for their respective teams.

I desperately want Rashford to flourish as an FPL asset and I do think he will finish with 10-15 goals next season.

But it's the fact he uses a forward slot and that Lukaku is so overwhelmingly the stronger option - at least that's our current perception - that has us ignore him.

I do wonder if there is an argument for doubling on United with Lukaku and, like you say, in his bracket, he could easily outscore his peers.

If Rashford is nailed, it would just distract me from lukaku as he would steal his points. I always choose my forwards from lone strikers and a 4-4-2 forward is not fantasy material for me.

I've been toying with having both him and Lukaku. Have a (begrudging) suspicion that this will be Mou United's year, and contrary to popular opinion his title winning teams have tended to score a fair number of goals.

For me this means having one nailed defender (Valencia or Bailly) Lukaku and then another asset. Interest in Pogba is reliant on a new DM signing. Mkhitaryan has been looking amazing in pre-season but gets rotated. I think Mou has taken a shine to Rashford and he will get more starts this year.

I would really like to own Austin but his nailed-on-ness worries me. Anyone else in the same boat? Is he just worth the punt for GW1. Helps to maintain a balanced 343 for sure.

I think it's worth it, assuming he's starting the majority of the rest of pre-season games and looks to be in good nick. There seem to be a good number of cheapish strikers this season so hopefully the 3rd striker saga won't be like last year.

FYI I'm planning to start with him too.

Find a way to do aguero to Kane then it's allll good. Maybe downgrade Defoe.

Also some of your subs will never start (Rangel) so need to sort that. Rangel especially will drop in value quick based on very high ownership.

I'm struggling to look beyond Kane as a starter but I think for a Kane-less team this is pretty solid. Midfield perhaps leaves you a bit lacking if you need to make upgrades but these are all very good starting options IMO. I'd find a better 4.5 than Naughton, I think Swansea are gonna be whipping boys this season.

(A repost from earlier- for anyone interested- on the Man City attack)

After Man City's convincing win last night, and with the wealth of attacking talent that they have in their team, it really is hard to see past the fact that they are likely going to be the most prolific team in the league next season...

But the question remains- who is the best route into this attack, and who is going to miss out?

With City playing 3 at the back last night, with the 2 wing backs... IF Pep decides to persevere with this set up, it would leave 5 'attacking' positions to be filled.

You would think that playing in the centre of midfield will be Yaya Toure/Fernandinho alongside De Bruyne... Leaving Aguero, Jesus, Sane, Sterling, B.Silva and D.Silva to battle it out for the 3 remaining places.

From a fantasy perspective, this makes De Bruyne the most nailed City asset. With 6 goals and 18 assists last season, he will be a favourite to be raking in the points again this year. The fact that he set up 3 of the 4 goals last night highlights this.

The caveat with De Bruyne is price. At 10.0m, he is quite difficult for people- myself included- to fit him in. Instead, I have looked to Sane as the route into the Man City attack.

Sane shone at the end of last season, finishing with 5 goals and 3 assists, and is expected to push on this year.

But will he be able to force his way into the side?

Interestingly, Sane played the majority of his games last year on the left wing. The right wing was mainly manned by Sterling (who eventually fell out of favour, but put in a man of the match performance last night) David Silva on occasions (who you have to imagine will be a bit-part player next year), and Gabriel Jesus (albeit not often).

New signing Bernardo Silva played the majority of his games last year on the right wing as well. Despite scoring 8 goals and registering 9 assists in Ligue 1 last year, I think that he will initially struggle to get into the team.

Does this indicate that Sane's position on the left wing is secure? Last season, at least, it was...

Last night though, Pep opted to play both Jesus (7 goals, 4 assists last term) and Aguero (20 goals and 3 assists) up front together (Jesus playing more of the match than Aguero), leaving no room for Sane in the starting line-up...

If this formation persists, I for one will be avoiding Sane from the start, and instead shuffling my team around to accommodate one of Jesus, Aguero or De Bruyne.

Who will everyone else be choosing as a route into the Man City attack?

Is anyone avoiding altogether- at least until we know more?

Will be interesting to know your thoughts!

    Thanks 🙂

Very sorry about the lost post- got a bit carried away!!

The way I see it is to either avoid altogether or pick two from sane, KdB, Aguero or Jesus

Interesting! So I assume the reasoning for this is to avoid picking a City option who doesn't play...? Avoiding altogether is no risk, and doubling up is more of a gamble, but you would hope that either one of your picks would play on a given day! I.e. If one of the above doesn't play, you'll have another City player to 'cover' the points! A lot of money to sit on the bench though if one doesn't play...

In my opinion don't bother going for Sané, he was very patchy last year and don't think he can offer an instant impact at the start of the season for £8.5m. It's either KDB, Jesus or Aguero if you want City attack. Jesus would be my first pick but KDB is great too as he offers flexibility in midfield

Sane at 8.5m represents really good value IF he can get regular starts! The other, more expensive picks are more assured of starts, BUT are harder to fit into your team...

Yeah, this is really hurting me currently and, as it stands, I don't have a City option.

Sane has been the one I've worked in and he will likely be the final choice and most likely to get the nod for me.

As I see it, Pep likes both Sane and Jesus and they, along with KDB, are the most assured starters.

Can I stretch to KDB? I'd like to but I still don't know if I trust him to deliver value on his price tag. Or at least, I don't know if he can justify the difference from Sane at 8.5.

I'm very likely to go with Kane and Lukaku so both Jesus and Aguero are out for me, leaving me focusing mainly on Sane as an option. But he's far from assured.

Yeah, through the remainder of pre-season, if Sane starts to look like he'll start in GW1, he'll be in my team! I don't mind taking a risk on putting him in there, so long as there is enough evidence for me to be able to make an informed decision!

The other thing with KDB is that, at 10.0m, you would expect to be able to have a player that you can regularly place the armband on, if needed... For me, I don't think that I would be comfortable doing that... Yes he has his huge hauls, but with most of his points coming from assists, he seems to me a player that scores 'little and often', rather than going into each game week with the optimism that he's going to explode...

KdB and Jesus atm. Think Jesus is a concern. If Aguero is a starter then 1 mil difference becomes minimal.

Have been monitoring Sane, but looks like he may not be nailed. Like you said, if the 352 persists, I will bring in either De Bruyne or Jesus. Not sure about Aguero.

I think like mark + I also have Kane and Lukaku and I am desperately trying to fit KDB in. Somehow, it is about to happen, but at a value, with 2 4.5 midfielders. If I can get nailed 4.5 midfielders, I will squeeze him in because I do believe his points per minute will better Sane.

But when the KDB, Jesus, Aguero or Sané start, we can expect big points.

I agree with you but how are you dealing with that issue? Avoiding all of them?

I think I want one of KDB/Jesus for that Brighton game and probably a few more

KDB's allegedly deeper position doesn't scare me. It's either him or no City midfield. If I take out KDB, it's only Coutinho who could fill that spot, and I don't like that option (hi, Ben Crabtree).

Had Sane and Jesus since first draft. However, I'm wavering. If I go Chicharito instead of Firmino this frees up 1.5m, a big consideration. The knock-on effect is that Lukaku would maybe sit better for security of start alongside Kane than Jesus? I can then keep Sane, or bin altogether and cover Liverpool with Salah or upgrade a defender with the odd 0.5m...

Jesus looks a steal though at the price. He scores whenever he plays.

For those who are curious about Everton's opponents tonight in the Europa League Qualifying match at Goodison, I have put together the following info from some online research.

MFK Ružomberok are the third best team in Slovakia. Their average attendance at home games is 1,800. In England, this would place them roughly in the middle of the Conference average attendances, just above Forest Green and Sutton United.

Ružomberok is a town of around 30,000 people - so about two-thirds the size of Welwyn Garden City!

Their squad is made up of Slovakian and Czech players with one each from Bosnia, Macedonia and Albania.

In 2005/6, they won the league but they haven't managed that again since, finishing almost always 6th or 7th (out of 12) ever since. The following season's resultant European campaign was their last until just now.

Their only player capable of scoring double figures, Czech forward Jakub Mareš, has just been sold so of course won't feature.

However, beware of their goalscoring threat in the last half an hour as they have scored their last three European goals in this period and don't seem to score at any other time.

    Good luck you Toffees!
