Fantasy Bundesliga Game

The second season of the official Fantasy Bundesliga game is here and is available in both English and German.

The first season was a lot of fun and we had a few Fantasy Football Scout regulars posters playing but no official league. This season I hope we can step up the community’s involvement and have created a FFS League (Password – FFS).

The concept and rules are very different to the Fantasy Premier League game, so if you are interested in playing I would recommend having a proper look-through. Statistics are a big part of the game so it suits the keen Fantasy player well.

The season will run from 18th August to 12th May over 34 gameweeks. The first deadline is kick off of the opening game on Friday night, August 18th 19:30 UK time.

Rules and Scoring points

-150 million budget to pick 15 players
-No limit on how many players you can have from one team.
-Three transfers between gameweeks. When planning your transfers try to make sure you have as many different kick-off times over a gameweek covered to maximize points potential.
-There are set wildcard weeks (we are not told exactly when) which were last year one of the international breaks in the autumn and the winter break.
-The transfer market is locked when the gameweek starts and opens again after the round is completed with player prices adjusted according to player performance.
-Captaincy has been replaced this year by a star player system. You pick one star forward, midfielder and defender who score 1,5x points.
-Manual substitutions during the gameweek (like in UEFA-games)
-You can replace a player in your starting xi with someone who is yet to play but you lose the points you sub out. You can also change your star player until you are happy with your score or run out of players in that position.
-Multiple ways of scoring points, not just goals, assists and clean sheets.
-If you want to do well in the game you need to understand the importance of duels won. See more here and here.

Selecting your squad

When picking your team you need to decide whether you are putting your budget to your starting xi or utilizing manual subs with more width. All of last year’s bargains have been bumped up in price so we need new ones and they usually introduce themselves when the season gets going, not before. This is why it may be smart to start with 12-13 strong starters and a couple of one million priced bench fodders.

Goalkeepers

Most important thing when picking goalies is that they keep a clean sheet as that gives you five points and every goal conceded loses one point. As every shot saved earns you a point save machines can also be beneficial, however, you want to avoid a scenario where your keeper’s team loses big and you are quickly looking at minus points.

Bayern’s Manuel Neuer (15m) is the most expensive keeper and (depending on his fitness) many will favor him and a fodder for reliable points. Good mid-priced keepers include Oliver Baumann (12m, Hoffenheim) and Rune Jarstein (11m, Hertha). Cheapest rotation pairs set you back 13-15m but for this to work your keepers need to play at different times and this is not the case in GW1 (Hannover/Mainz/HSV/Werder).

Defenders

You want defenders who win a lot of duels consistently every week. That way you have a solid base score even if your defender concedes or doesn’t get any attacking returns. Initially, you might look at someone like David Alaba (13m, Bayern) as one of the best defenders to pick, but even though he got four goals, four assists and a good amount of clean sheets last season, he wasn’t actually as good of a pick as on paper. That is because he didn’t earn many duel points.

Tried and trusted premium defender targets include Willi Orban (14m, RB), Benjamin Hübner (14m, Hoffenheim) and Werder’s very attacking wingback Theodor Gebre Selassie (13m). For a bit cheaper you could be looking at “Augsburg’s Roberto Carlos” Konstantinos Stafylidis (12m), Freiburg’s Caglar Söyüncü (11m) and a cheaper alternative to other Köln defenders Lukas Klünter (9m). Luca Caldirola (Werder, 5m) looks like the best cheap option right now, but when first team players get injured other names will come in to play too.

Midfielders

With midfielders, you are looking at wingers and attacking mids who are able to score and assist goals. In this game, you can also target box-to-box mids who are good going forward and do their defensive duties picking up a handful of duel points in the process.

There are several intriguing premium midfielders. Liverpool target Naby Keita (15m, RB) who bosses the midfield, Bayern duo Thiago (15m) and Arjen Robben (14m), not forgetting BVB’s tricky winger Ousmane Dembele (14m). Going down to 13m you find two set-piece takers in Vincenzo Grifo (M’gladbach) and Werder’s captain Zlatko Junuzovic.

At 11m there is a potential out of position player in Werder’s Fin Bartels, who finished last season strongly playing as a striker. For 10m you can invest in Köln’s Marcel Risse, who did well last season before suffering a knee injury.

Yevhen Konoplyanka (7m, Schalke) has suffered a big price drop because he was out of favor with S04’s previous manager but could emerge as a budget pick with a new man in charge.

Forwards

Goals are expected from your forwards, but also keep in mind that a striker winning regularly 15+ duels in a game will outscore a striker who scores a single goal but doesn’t do much else.

Bayern’s Robert Lewandowski (15m) is the only essential player in the game. BVB’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (15m) is close to that, but the lack of duel points last season means he just falls short. He is still, of course, an excellent pick and second name in most team sheets. With that being the case it mainly comes down to the third man in our forward line.

This third slot could be the one where you really play the fixtures. Almost everyone priced at 13m+ is a good pick with a few unknowns in the mix.

At 11m Nils Petersen (Freiburg) and Guido Burgstaller (Schalke) offer two solid cheaper alternatives. 19-year old Kaylen Hinds (5m, Wolfsburg) came from Arsenal this summer and has done well in pre-season, but it remains to be seen if he or any other cheap option can provide a bargain for our forward lines.

Additional Information

The week before the season starts all teams will be playing in the DFB-Pokal, German Cup, which gives a good indication into the starting lineups.

There is a learning curve to this game with a lot of stats based scoring rules so even if it initially might look hard, after a few weeks you’ll start to get the hang of it.

The game also hasn’t done any favors to new players by not including last seasons statistics. I don’t have much saved but will try to help from memory if there are any questions.

Mine too. Ribery, Sabitzer and Kehrer have combined for 4 points, not likely Willems is going to contribute much either.

Yeah, Willems joins Felipe and Jack Stephens (FPL) to miss their team's clean sheet for me this season. Was my star player too.

Otherwise, 94 points. Strikers saved my round this time with 41 points combined.

Pulisic got 12. Well spent there, but Ribery and Kono both missed out. Transferring out Vidal was frustrating as well.

111 for me. Slipped a spot in the overall standings (I think because everyone but me has Leckie now) but overall not as bad as it could have been given how many of my guys put in terrible performances (Bellarabi, Sabitzer, Kehrer) or didn't play at all (Ribery, Willems). Stuffing my lineup with Bayern for next week, hopefully Ribery finally makes a start.

104, here. Borussia saved my gameweek with almost half the points but Bayer almost ruined it ( Wendell, Bellarabi, Mehmedi) and Konoplyanka, Willems 0 points. Hopefully weekend gets better

Thinking of doing Burki to Ulreich as well. A possible nailed down Bayern Munich goalkeeper is too much to ignore.

Also thinking of Ginter to Sokratis/Barta (if returned), I can't ignore a Dortmund defender with their current form.

Not sure about my third transfer. Ribery could play against Wolfsburg after missing two games in a row, but I'd like to get in Keita.
It also seems safer just to get a Bayern defender along with Lewandowski.
Pulisic could be rested as well, though Yarmalenko has started thrice in a row. Tough decision for a third transfer.

On another note, is Lukasz Piszczek nailed right now? If not, who else could play at right back for Dortmund?

    1. shaq
      • 6 Years

Yeah, Bürki to Ulreich is a no-brainer IMO. I did it last GW. Saves so much money, and I have to think Ulreich is at least an even-money bet to outperform Bürki till Neuer returns. Ulreich should also gain a ton of value over that span.

I think Keita's banned for the next two matches, no?

On Dortmund: I doubt Pulisic sits the next one out, after already not starting vs. Cologne. Yarmolenko and even Aubameyang strike me as more likely candidates to be rotated out. Piszczek does seem nailed, though he doesn't seem like a great value given his limited duel point contributions.

But yeah, I'm in a similar situation to yours, already have Ribery, and plan to keep him, in addition to bringing in Robben and Vidal (if they all end up starting for Bayern this week of course; Thiago already ruled out) for Bellarabi and Sabitzer. Also most likely going to bring back Upamecano, subbing him out for Thilo Kehrer.

Keita has two more matches, yes.

Piszczek has played all games so as a Zagadou owner I'm hoping that he remains at LB and Toljan goes to RB. Not sure if Bosz trusts both young fullbacks at the same time though. Aubameyng didn't travel to internationals so he had a two-week rest recently and hasn't been taken off even when the games have been won so I'd be surprised if he needs a rest. Pulisic-Philipp wings would be my best guess.

I'd rather say they played horribly. Ulreich fumbled the shot from FK into his own net when it was 2-0 and then Wolfsburg equalized after 80. Bayern didn't have any chances when I was watching.

Made a childish mistake with my lineup yesterday when changing tactics. It was 3-4-3 but then I changed it to 4-3-3 and star manned Zagadou. I knew he wasn't in the starting lineup but I did it just in case someone gets injured in first half etc. Then I couldn't choose 3-4-3 again because in that case, I wouldn't be able to choose any star defender. Whatever.

I thought I had a good week with Bellarabi pending but somehow I keep dropping in rankings (to 20, but still). 111 points, for now, this week, thanks to 38 from Auba and 23 from Robben.

Good news is that Tisserand looks like he got his place in the starting lineup back after his injury, so he's still a good option at only 2.9.

115 points, with Bellerabi dropped today.

Gutted that I didn't get Maxim Phillip back in, but not bad otherwise.

Waiting for the Europa/Champions League games to play, may have to replace my Bayern wingers and Pulisic if they start their games.
Hopefully I won't be forced into too many changes.

118 and 84-th place. Does anybody know the rules abour changing formations? On Sunday morning I played 3-4-3 with Harnik in attack. Before the game I could change formation to 4-4-2, but after the game formation could not be changed to 4-4-2, so I could not change 3 point Harnik for 7 point Wendell. Sorry if it is in Rules and I did not see it

It can be complicated to change formation. I haven't worked out all the kinks in the system, but I think to keep maximum flexibility it's best to have at least three guys (one striker, one mid, one defender) playing later than everyone else in the squad. Once everyone in a certain level of your formation has played I don't think you can make changes to that level. Dortmund has played in one of the latest games each of the past few weeks, so I've been able to keep my guys (Auba, Pulisic, Sokratis, Zagadou) benched for the early fixtures, and then make substitutions and formation adjustments as needed before the Dortmund kickoff. This week will be trickier, though between Leipzig (Upamecano) and Bayern (Lewandowski, Robben/Vidal/Ribery)'s late games I should manage.

Looking now I think you can change formation as long as you have playing substitute. For example: In my case I could not change formation because all attackers and mids had points. If only one of them had not already played then I would be able to.
Sorry if there is grammar mistakes, I am not from England

Yeah, you need at least one guy who hasn't played yet on both levels of the formation you want to adjust. For instance, the other week I had one defender on my bench playing in the very last game of the GW who I wanted to sub in. I was in a 3-4-3 and was happy with all three defenders' scores who were in the lineup, and so I wanted to switch out a low-scoring striker and go to a 4-4-2. I wasn't able to do this, since all my strikers had played.

I'm definitely looking to bring in a Wolfsburg player for this week. I'm not too worried about transfers this week, as I'm predicting another Unlimited transfer round after the matches, given the next international break upcoming.

My three main candidates are Tisserand, Didavi and Origi. Verdicts on Wolfsburg players for this week? Mainz at home looks good to me.

Would be interested to hear the thoughts of someone who played last year, but I think the unlimited transfers had more to do with the transfers that happened during the previous international break than the international break itself. I am not counting on another wildcard week so soon.

Wolfsburg's game does look nice this week. I'm also targeting guys from Frankfurt (vs. Stuttgart) and Gladbach (vs. Hannover). I think Origi is the most certain of those guys to start--not sure what Tisserand's standing is relative to Knoche and Uduokhai in central defense at this point, as he didn't have the greatest performance against Bayern. Didavi wasn't in training a couple days ago with an injury, but I'd imagine we'll be updated on his status today or tomorrow.

Verdicts on the chances of these three players starting this weekend:

    Sokratis Papastathopoulos?

Seems like some of the fans would like to see Haller dropped but that is often different to the manager's view.
Don't see a reason why Orban wouldn't start.
Sokratis hasn't had a break yet but he usually always plays when fit so again, hard to say.

I have quite a few players with question marks so need a bit more luck than last round to bounce back.

Ancelotti sacked and assistant Sagnol taking over for now. Usually, these interim managers just stick the most experienced guys on the field.

Cheers. Marc Bartra has returned from injury, and was on the bench for Madrid on Tuesday, so I can see him starting this weekend. Not sure who misses out though. Suppose it sounds silly, but my defensive options are limited so it could lose me valuable points towards the league table.

I'm confident on all my other players however. Will look into bringing a Wolfsburg player in, and if Bellerabi doesn't start tomorrow, he goes.

This year Sokratis and Bartra have always started over Toprak when both fit, so yeah unless it's some kind of rest/injury thing I doubt Bartra's return would result in Sokratis getting benched.

    Budget Defenders -

Benjamin Pavard for Stuttgart is priced at 6.0, and has started every game so far. Could be a decent budget option if you need a playing defender. Stuttgart as also yet to concede a home goal, interestingly.

Uduokhai and Zagadou look like good options for this week, but with Jeremy Toijan and the returning Jeffery Bruma, perhaps they're not as good cheap options in the long run. I'll likely get one of them in today for Leinhart.

Of course when Felipe returns for Hannover 96, he will likely stay in my team indefinitely. He produces excellent value for his points.

    1. shaq
      • 6 Years
      6 years, 7 months ago

Have there been indications that Jeffrey Bruma is close to returning?

It's worth noting that Hannover has played probably the easiest schedule thus far of any team, particularly from a defensive point of view--the only team in the top half of the table they've played is Schalke, who have a substandard offense. They have some decent fixtures coming up but I would still expect some regression from their defenders.

And thanks for the tip on Stuttgart and Pavard, hadn't realized that defense had been performing quite so well. Those home games haven't come against the greatest offenses (Augsburg, Wolfsburg, Mainz) but their next two home opponents look nice too: Cologne and Freiburg.

        https://www.transfermarkt.com/jeffrey-bruma/verletzungen/spieler/88721

Felipe earned 18 duel points in 3 full games, averaging 6 points a game. I'd say thats good for a 5.3 priced player.

        1. shaq
          • 6 Years
          6 years, 7 months ago

Is transfermarkt actually reliable for this kind of thing? They already have oddly specific return dates for John Brooks and Neuer too. I suspect the case of Bruma's Oct. 2 return date is similar, it's an estimate someone made months ago. I would have expected to hear some news about him returning to training, etc. if his return is actually imminent. LI has no updates since mid-July (https://www.ligainsider.de/jeffrey-bruma_1391/), and Google News doesn't have much of anything either.

I don't disagree at all about Felipe being a great value when healthy, and an effective duel-winner, but Hannover conceded once over their first three games, winning twice and drawing once. I would not expect that level of team performance, which helped to propel Felipe near the top of the total points chart, to continue.

Anyway, sorry for being so nit-picky 🙂 It's a bad habit. To your excellent list of budget defenders I would add Tisserand, given the lack of news on return dates for Brooks and Bruma, and his unbelievably low price (2.7). A bit of a question who ends up starting at center-back between him, Knoche and Uduokhai though.

Augsburg have a couple of tough fixtures coming up, vs. Dortmund and @ Hoffenheim, but Daniel Opare (4) has started the last four games and done pretty well. If Framberger replaces Opare in the starting XI once he heals up he'd be a nice option too, at 4.6 and dropping.

I'm going 4-3-3 to start the week (4 of my defenders play at the same time) and will try to change to 3-4-3 after Saturday games. Hopefully, I can do it without screwing up this time. It should remove the defender with the lowest points, logically, right?

I have the exact same dilemma and based on the conversation above I don't think you'll be able to take a defender off of your lineup if all of them have played.

That's too bad, and wrong planning from my side.

I have Zagadou - Bartra - Willems - Tisserand (also Upamecano) and Delaney - Pulisic - Caiuby for now. Vidal and Robben are subs. I guess I will just try to change it after Saturday.

you're fine, because Upamecano plays in the last game of the week

you can manually remove the lowest scorer just to be safe

True, he didn't specify when the fifth defender plays. Thought it might have been today.

I've gone all in on Eintracht this week:

    Vidal > Kevin-Prince Boateng
    Zagadou > Simon Falette
    Opare > Tisserand

    Aubameyang, Haller (Lewandowski)

K-P Boateng, Pulisic, Caiuby, Robben (Ribery)

    Willems, Falette, Sokratis, Tisserand (Upamecano)

    Ulreich (1m)

That's it for Willems in my team. Dropped to bench again by Kovac.

Zagadou not playing either. Bad week incoming.

haha yeah what's up with that? starting to suspect that "duels won" don't correlate too well with actual soccer ability 🙂 or maybe there's some injury issue

Of course when I spend an hour or two mulling over which players are nailed on, with good fixtures, my players still get dropped.

There were quite a few lineups in the Frankfurt forum without Willems but still, it is annoying. He was looking like a season pick for fantasy but sounds like performances haven't been that great on the pitch, especially defensively, to be trusted when playing four at the back.

Yeah, quite a week for my Eintracht defenders. Willems actually ended up outscoring Falette. At least I finally guessed right on Bayern's starting XI: Robben and Ribery both in there vs. Hertha today.

Another 'bad' week, 89 points, my lowest score yet.

Only 3 playing defenders, Orban didn't start again, Vidal didn't start. Willems now untrustworthy as a starter.

Praying for an Unlimited Transfers International break...

116p, in the first page in gameweek rankings. Very important after last week.

Really don't want unlimited transfers though.

Off to a good start, between Willems and new acquisition Leckie getting benched

Yaaaay. Konoplyanka, Orban and Pulisic all didn't start. Sokratis red card. One player left. Great returning week!

107 pts and 98th in the rankings. Is Piszczek out for a long time? And what do you think about Tisserand?

Great two weeks for me with differentials coming in nicely. Up to 22nd.

Piszczek seems to be out for months but Schmelzer is now back fit again and Guerreiro is closing in on return too. That means Zagadou will probably drop to the bench. Toljan is the only natural option on the right, although he didn't have a good game v Leipzig.

You can't really go too wrong with Tisserand for his price. He did well last week for me but managed only three duels this week and 0p which was disappointing. I don't expect him to keep many clean sheets but hoping for better performances in terms of duels which would still give good value.

Brooks and Bruma are actually both back in training for Wolfsburg so Tisserand's place could be under threat again.

Uduokhai's as well. Really want Felipe to return from injury honestly. Would be a nice transfer to make.

Positive post this time. Three Bundesliga transfers are as follows:

Orban for Oczipka - Can't see Orban starting the next game, is on rotation and hasn't impressed me in general. Oczipka has some great fixtures coming up (Mainz, Wolfsburg, Frieburg). His duel points have been good and he looks nailed on so far.

Sokratis for Bartra - Kind of regretting getting in Bartra, since Dortmund are out of form and there were better options (e.g Vestergaard), but he should start this weekend and could keep his place after Sokratis returns. Should provide decent value if he keeps his place.

Robben for Goretzka (unconfirmed) - 3 goals, 32 duel points won, nailed on and has some great fixtures, he looks like a must in my opinion. Robben has started the last two games and I can't see him starting this week. Bayern have to play Leipzig twice afterwards in succession (League and DFB cup).

Thoughts on a replacement for Konoplyanka?

Schalke duo has shot me up the rankings in the past two weeks. Wondering whether to get rid of Robben myself. I'd be surprised if he isn't rested but still scary to get rid of before playing a team like HSV.

Not many mids around Kono's price if you already have Caiuby. Hannover's Schwegler seems to have been quite consistent and Hoffenheim's Geiger offers a very cheap alternative but is certainly a rotation threat.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've had a poor week compare to you guys. Trying to catch up. xD

    Some resources I've found useful:

Total duels won leaderboard that tracks to the official scoring system for this year: https://www.ran.de/datenbank/fussball/bundesliga/statistik-zweikaempfe/

And one for last year (individual players' figures under "Spielerprofile"): http://inside11.de/statistik/spieler/zweikaempfe-zweikampfquote/

Also understat.com has very interesting expected goals and assists numbers, for individuals and for teams. Some takeaways from that:

    - Mathew Leckie has been extremely fortunate on the attacking end this year (0.5 xG, 4 actual goals). Something closer to last year's production (where he averaged an expected goal about every five matches), seems like a reasonable expectation going forward.

    - Stuttgart, Cologne and Bremen have been especially unlucky in scoring goals so far, Simon Terodde, Anastasios Donis, Yuya Osako, Jhon Córdoba and Florian Kainz being the individuals with especially large xG vs. actual G discrepancies. Of those Donis and Kainz are the relatively budget options--8.1 and 6.3, respectively.

I am also trying to recover from a bad spell--slipped from 5, to 11, to 16, with 83 last week. Bringing in Thiago, Keita and Kehrer for K-P Boateng, Robben and Sokratis, hopefully they can help right the ship.
