Fantasy Premier League Rate My Team Surgery

Welcome to the first of this summer’s pre-season Rate My Team Surgeries.

These articles will look at initial Fantasy Premier League squads and will be published ahead of Gameweek 1. Each time one of the FFScout moderator and contributor team will put forward their selection for scrutiny in order to start the discussion.

The aim is to highlight some of the key concerns we have faced in constructing our squads, which hopefully will chime with other FPL managers’ issues.

In addition, we want the comment section to provide a useful opportunity for you to submit your own RMTs. Please also be helpful to those asking for advice. The key to successful rating of teams is to give advice as well.

I have drawn the first straw to start off this series with my balanced 3-4-3 selection.

My Team

Key Concerns

My lack of Manchester United or Chelsea defence is a concern as both sets of players are highly owned. It is the gaping Red Devils shaped hole in my back line that is my biggest issue as Chelsea’s fixtures are not great after their opener at home to Burnley, while Jose Mourinho’s troops early matches look superb. David De Gea or Eric Bailly are targets – although each will need funds to be freed up elsewhere.

De Gea could be a possibility as I’m not wholly convinced by my cheap as chips West Brom goalkeeper double up. Would I be better off going for the Spaniard, or indeed the save points that perhaps West Ham stopper Joe Hart or Watford’s Heurelho Gomes may offer early on?

The third striker spot is a tough one this season. Southampton’s Charlie Austin is there as a place holder currently and I’d be particularly keen to hear arguments for other strikers priced at 6.5 or below or even why I should invest more in this berth.

Nailed On Picks

Flexibility is driving my initial selection – and that for me is why Harry Kane is nailed on. Downgrading an injured or poorly performing Kane is easy, upgrading to the game’s most expensive striker could require surgery or an early wildcard. I’m also not convinced that Dele Alli or Christian Eriksen will match last season’s golden boot winner’s output.

Kevin De Bruyne looks the best attacking Manchester City option for me and is 0.5 cheaper than the only other one I’d consider – Gabriel Jesus. The Belgian looked particularly commanding in City’s 3-0 rout of Spurs in pre-season.

One of Nathan Ake or Charlie Daniels looks essential for me. Bournemouth defenders are among the best FPL resources due to their command of attacking points. Clean sheets are merely a nice extra for them. Both this pair appeal, but currently Ake has the edge as one of the best defenders last season for points per match. He was also 2016/17’s best player in terms of baseline bonus points.

As a Brighton fan I’ve got to have some representation and I believe defence is the main place to find it. With two assists full back Markus Suttner has impressed in pre-season and has even been fielded on the wing at times during matches. Lewis Dunk is another option here  – but his ill discipline concerns me. Also talk of his bonus potential hinges on clean sheets – which I’m not convinced my team will excel at in the top flight. Suttner’s attacking potential gives him the edge for me.

Romelu Lukaku is going nowhere with United’s fixtures and his strong pre-season form. Don’t even attempt to persuade me to ditch him.

The Punt

John Stones is my main punt. I originally had United’s Victor Lindeloff in this place but I’m concerned that he may be eased into Premier League action and miss the odd game at the start. City’s Stones could also be a rotation risk, hence the punt, but with wingbacks set to be deployed I can see him earning starts at first and if pre-season is anything to go by he could also bring me attacking returns. Already he has scored twice and assisted another goal during pre-season. If he can carry on that form his lowly 3.6% ownership and 5.5 price tag could rocket.

Formation

I’ve tried to construct a team around a four at the back formation but it just doesn’t sit right with this dullard. I favour the attacking prospects of midfielders and strikers over the dull ache of disappointment when a defender loses a clean sheet.

I’m currently favouring 3-4-3 but am willing to swap to 3-5-2 should five viable midfielders emerge and the third striker well dries up completely.

would definitely uprgrade from Morata to Lukaku based on pre season wobbles, not sold on the morata transfer

I was considering that transfer already, my brain is telling me Kane would probably flop, so I would only consider Morata/Lukaku. Thanks

too much money on the bench at the moment

Seems like a lot of money on the bench. Could upgrade on Morata to Lukaku if you freed up money on the bench

    Your thoughts very much appreciated.

    Forster (Elliot)
    Bertrand, Valencia, Trippier (Dawson, Rangel)
    Fabregas, Pogba, Alli, Zaha (RLC)
    Lukaku, Jesus, Austin

    couple of doubts:

Looking towards pre season performances, Lacazette has been ineffective, maybe wait for Lemar to join, until then, Lacazette is not preferred,
        Go for Morata/Jesus

    2. The Seagulls and the Trawle…

Great team. Only doubts are Daniels (fixtures not great, would propose Dawson but you dont want to double up on WBA i guess) and Laca (new to the PL, you can double up on city with Jesus, am sure City offense would provide enough points for both hiñ and KDB).

could be more balanced - personally don't think Alonso is worth that outlay if it means having Milivoj as your 4th midfielder.

      Alonso --> Bertrand

Milivoj --> Ritchie, Ince, Redmond, etc. (6/6.5)

      any extra to upgrade Mee/Yedlin/Sutter

Yedlin likely but not guaranteed starter

I'm personally not keen on Zaha from the start, though I know a lot on here are. For me his opening fixtures aren't great, but would be easy enough to get him in for Willian once Hazard is back.

id scrap zaha for a bit more flexibility in that 3rd striker role,

      6 years, 9 months ago

      too many risks here

Rudiger is not guaranteed to start - nor does it matter whether a defender is Chelsea etc. or not, rather that they pick up cleansheets

not keen on the Ramsey pick, Ozil Lacazette Sanchez more likely to pick up the big points here

Personally don't back Gayle to hit that many (I'm a Newcastle fan), not least because I don't see us scoring all that many as a team.

Quite like the Sterling pick, haven't seen him crop up much so far

      Suggestions:

      Downgrade Gayle --> 4.5
Ramsey --> Zaha (more important player to their team)
Tadic --> Redmond (if you're going southampton here, Redmond will get more points through goals in Pellegrino's system)
Rudiger --> Bertrand (saves 0.5, southampton have very favourable fixtures

Then use the remaining cash to upgrade Mee, and one of your midfielders to a big hitter.

      1. mataofperspective
        • 10 Years

Hmm like the downgrade of Ruddiger to Bertrand I will go with that

I initially had Redmond and a friend of mine (Soton Fan ) said based on what hes seen on pre season Tadic is better option , Although I may live to regret that ,

yeah I wasn't mad on Gayle myself he had been swapped around a few times,

I am going to stick with the Rams for now , ozil/sanchez outpriced and lacazette is a bigger risk than Lukaku/kane ,

        Cheers for feedback

      D. Luiz would be a better option than Rudiger with that price as Luiz also takes defense and midfield free kicks well, thereby increasing chances for assists

Like the 4-4-2 approach it was go to in my stronger seasons in FPL, not sure if Daniels is best value defender however based on fixtures

      cant fault the midfield

Forward line should do the business and if it doesn't the finances is there to switch the lid

Avoid Rangel. High % ownership so *if* he doesn't play, he will get sold off by lots of people and price will drop. Pick a lower owned 4.0.

Ramsey... i'm tempted by him if Sanchez leaves, but if not, I'm not sure he will feature much? He's been coming on for Xhaka around 70 mins in during pre season.

You could sell Salah who is a bit of a punt, replace with someone cheaper with favourable fixtures like Tadic/Redmond or Phillips or Zaha. That would free up 2m ish.

I haven't been convinced by the Pogba selection to be honest but with Matic arriving it pushes him forward so he becomes more appealing.

Plus we tend to believe that big club loanees have some added assurance that they're going to get starts, right?

Maybe, over the season, but I'd assume the first few games he'll be coming on as sub, or coming off for one of the bigger names after 60 minutes.

*Or if I have him, 59 minutes.

Good shout for a 4.5 though

Loftus Cheek and Tom Carroll both look like good bets in the 4.5 MID bracket.

      No 4.0 starting defenders.

i have been doing same for few weeks also and came up with almost identical team, so i think there is great coverage overall and forwards are best atm. There is also chance that lacazette or jesus are on fire in first game weeks, but who knows. Only difference i have is on the defensmans, i dont like yoshida, i really hope cedric is fit to start and i also prefer ake over daniels.

West Ham start with 3 away games + Chica hasn't had a pre-season; swap out for Benteke/Defoe IMO.
