Introducing – Yahoo Daily Fantasy Football

Fantasy Football Scout are delighted to announce Yahoo Daily Fantasy Football as our brand new partner game for the 2017/18 season.

While this may be a new game to many of you, Yahoo is, of course, a hugely well-known and trusted name. They were also one of the first to pioneer an online Fantasy Football game, with their season-long game one of the most engaging around.

Now Yahoo have returned with a daily Fantasy sports offering that we will be covering throughout the season.

That also means we will be able to present you with some fantastic offers, including a huge free-to-play half-season tournament with over £40,000 in prizes and perhaps even the chance to win £1 million. No, really. More on that later this week.

Yahoo are also providing a superb introductory offer for our visitors whereby, if you deposit £5, you’ll get a free £50 credited to your account. See the foot of this article for details on how to sign up and get started.

What is Yahoo Daily Fantasy Football?

If you’ve played any daily Fantasy Football or “DFS” games before, you will be instantly familiar with the concept of the Yahoo game.

You have £200 million to build a team of 11 players that you can enter in a variety of contests that are either free to play or have an entry fee with cash prizes on offer.

Each player has a value assigned which changes week-to-week based on their performance and popularity in the previous Gameweek.

The scoring system is more detailed than both Fantasy Premier League and Sky Sports – but that’s a good thing. Based on Opta data, the scoring brings a wider range of players into the mix, including those often-neglected defensive midfielders.

We will have an in-depth article, examining the nuances of the scoring system, very soon.

Yahoo’s contests allow you to tinker with your line-ups right up until kick-off, so you can monitor teamsheets and use the “late swap” feature to swoop for bargains and remove absent players.

Week to week, we will be bringing you our Yahoo Focus articles to help steer the nucleus of your XI for the weekend contests.

Why Should I play?

While so much of the Yahoo game is familiar and easy to grasp, it’s very different in a number of key ways – not least because it is very friendly for new players.

The game operates a “Fair Play” policy, with many of their contests allowing just a single-team entry, while others allow only up to ten teams per user. This levels the playing field and increases the chances that new players can compete for prizes.

There are also “no veterans” or “rookie only” contests which allow you to play and learn the game before taking on experienced managers in bigger contests. However, if you become a seasoned player, you can, of course, take part in contests that allow 50+ teams.

As mentioned, the scoring system is also finely balanced and perfectly suited to our visitors.

We are all familiar with Opta data and, if you’ve got yourself a Fantasy Football scout membership, you already have access to statistics and tools to help you select teams in the Yahoo game. We’re even building custom tables and will be implementing player prices into those tables in the coming weeks.

The Yahoo game is also fully localised for a UK audience. That may sound like a small thing but, with other daily games talking in dollars and asking you to build “rosters”, it’s nonetheless a welcome touch.

The other main reason to play is that the game has a huge range of contests for all players. There are free-to-play games, contests with entry fees as small as 25p right up to £1,000 for the high rollers.

You can register now and compete in the Gameweek 1 £10k contest that offers a £2k top prize for a £5 entry fee.

How Do I Start?

Yahoo’s Gameweek 1 contests are up and running so you can register an account and get started immediately.

As mentioned, if you register and deposit £5 or more, Yahoo will also give you a £50 bonus to be used in-game.

  • Register here
  • Deposit £5 or more and use the code FANTASY50 to claim your £50 credit
  • Choose a contest and start selecting your first Yahoo squad.

Later this week we will bring you news of the huge Fantasy Football Scout Yahoo Cup contest, which is free to play and with £50k in prizes.

Look out for details of that and further articles on the Yahoo Daily Fantasy Football game to come before August 11.

You must be over 18 years of age, resident in the UK, and of legal capacity to register with Yahoo Daily Sports and open an Account. If you sign up, please always play responsibly.

I really don't fancy Rodriguez. No offense but West Brom are not the most attacking unit. Surely there are better options that him.

I'd take a defender or keeper from them but find it really desperate that people are selecting attacking players from that team.

In his price bracket compared to others hes worth a punt. Especially if you early WC. Good fixtures, PL proven, scores when not injured. I'm giving him a go.

DDG vs cheaper keeper debate keeps ragin on. Iv currently got DDG. Anyone keen to point out the pros and cons of each choice?

      Pro:

DDG is likely to get CS due to strong team

      Con:

      Lose 1.0m to spend elsewhere
Cheaper goalkeepers also have favorable fixtures
Can make up for DDG in defense instead (Lindelof?)

I've always played the game with a more pricey keeper and never regretted it. More clean sheets and usually ends up with more points even if cheaper keeper makes more saves.

Expected clean sheets vs expected save points and bonus for DDG vs others. Then, factor in total points typically earned by a keeper relative to the price difference you'd spend elsewhere. There is no certain formula. You have to use your judgment about which combo you think will net the most points. Each approach could work. Not sure it's an easy choice, but at beginning when money is scarce, it seems wiser to go with a nailed on 4.5m who has decent fixtures.

If UTD had a clear 5.5 def option I'd be all over it with a 4.5 keeper, unfortunately they don't seem to at the moment. Sure Lindelof very well may start but I'm going with DDG as a sure fire way into that defense

I tried this 3 years ago and in week one 2 of my players didn't play and my bench was so weak that I had no one to replace them (4.0m players are that price for a reason!). I know it looks brilliant, but getting some playing 4.5m players really does make a difference.

    Mitrovic - one to watch?

Seems a lot of people are looking for a 3rd striker that offers value. Newcastle seem to offer potential value should the popular pick Charlie Austin fail to secure a place in Southampton's starting lineup. Below I've taken preseason minutes and returns to give a simple breakdown and any information that might be useful in suggesting who starts

Opening 6 fixtures: TOT, hud, WHM, swa, STO, bri

    Dwight Gayle (£6.5m)
    Starts: 2
    Appearances: 5
    Minutes: 225
    Returns: 3 goals, 1 assist

    Ayoze Perez (£5.5m)
    Starts: 2
    Appearances: 5
    Minutes: 237
    Returns: 0

    Aleksandar Mitrovic (£5.0m)
    Starts: 3
    Appearances: 5
    Minutes: 225
    Returns: 3 goals

Benitez opted for a 4-4-1-1 last season, with Diame or Perez in the hole and Gayle leading the line for the majority of the season (bar injury). In short, I think he will continue with this formation, though it is hard to ignore that both his strikers are firing well in preseason, where his attacking midfielders are struggling to create a spark. Ideally, if he changed to a 4-4-2, we could be onto a winner with Mitrovic.

The wingers in Ritchie, Atsu and Murphy have pace and like to cross so having a big target man like Mitrovic (6''2) who is good in the air, alongside a typical poacher in Gayle (5''8) who scored hardly any of his 23 goals last season with his head (most coming from around the 6 yard box) could stand to Newcastle's advantage early on until they sign a new striker.

Alternatively Benitez could stick to 4-4-1-1 and trial Diame in the hole with Gayle up top like last season, considering he has Shelvey and Merino to play CM. However, Benitez has used Diame deeper throughout preseason, so it seems the midfield 3 will battle for two places. In my opinion, Shelvey will get a CM spot allowing him to move forward to attack/ create, with Merino and Diame fighting for the more defensive position. Isaac Hayden is also there as an option.

Though it's possible Newcastle might trial a 3-5-2 like they worked on briefly last season, it has not been done in preseason so far. With one game remaining, hopefully the lineups and Benitez' interview can give us some indication about Mitrovic's chances of starting the new campaign.

TL;DR - Gayle is certain to start, and at £6.5m makes an easy alternative to Austin should we need a backup plan. There are a few factors that hinge on whether Mitrovic gets a place in the starting 11 that might become clear in Newcastle's last preseason match. Definitely one to watch for a mere £5.0m as that extra cash can be reinvested elsewhere.

I'm avoiding Newcastle ATM but I've seen Atsu in real life in 2 championship games last season and he impressed me.
He'd be my pick when they have a good run of fixtures and if Rafa has him nailed.
