Southampton – Best Three Options

Southampton enter the new season with a new manager, Mauricio Pellegrino, having sacked Frenchman Claude Puel after just a year at the club.

After managing just two more goals than relegated Sunderland last season, Pellegrino has been briefed with improving Southampton’s goal threat and seeing them challenge for a European place once again.

The fixture list has been kind to the new boss.

In their first five game weeks (SWA, WHU, hudd, WAT, cpl) Southampton do not face a side that finished in the top half of the Premier League table last season, representing the perfect opportunity for a flying start to the new campaign.

With such fantastic fixtures and the shackles off their attackers, Southampton players are set to be popular options. Here I look at three of the south coast side’s best options.

RYAN BERTRAND

Despite being the most expensive of the Southampton defenders, left-back Ryan Bertrand looks to be the safest pick.

Portuguese right back Cedric has lacked minutes during pre season and new singing Jan Bednarek provides competition to the current favoured centre-back partnership of Maya Yoshida andJack Stephens. Meanwhile, Virgil Van Dijk waits on the sidelines having handed in a transfer request.

At Pellegrino’s previous club – Deportivo Alaves –  his fullbacks had the licence to get forward and join the attack, which adds to the appeal of  Bertrand,  who managed five assists in the previous campaign.

With the possibility of high attacking returns from the Saints fullbacks this season, the English international could offer excellent value at just £5.5m.

MANOLO GABBIADINI

Throughout the whole of pre-season one of the main topics of Southampton conversation was whether Charlie Austin or Manolo Gabbiadini would start Gameweek 1.

The Englishman managed two goals in pre season and the Italian managed the same tally plus an assist. But with the former benched in Southampton’s final friendly it looks like Gabbiadini may have the edge.

Despite letting many down with a lacklustre display at the end of last season, we all know what the former Napoli man is capable of, after his emphatic entrance to the league last February.  The £7.0m Italian could prove excellent value if he nails his spot in the starting 11 and on the evidence of pre-seasonite looks likely he will be Southampton’s chief weapon in attack.

JAMES WARD-PROWSE

Priced at just £5.5m, the England U21 could be a great differential ahead of the upcoming season. A 4-2-3-1 formation seems to be Pellegrino’s preferred set up and Ward-Prowse currently the preferred option in an advanced midfield role.

Pre-season has also hinted that the youngster is currently on corner duty but there is still some confusion demanding free kicks with both Ward-Prowse and Gabbiadni sharing them during pre season. Despite getting only one goal and an assist in pre-season, the England U21 captain looks to have a big season ahead of him and could prove to be a bargain.

There is a caveat though, with Southampton bringing in Mario Lemina from Juventus. It remains to be seen whether the Gabon international will threaten his place or be utilised in a more central midfield role.

    Any opinion on my team would be welcome;

    Foster / Begovic
Bellerin / Tripper / Cedric / Van Aanholt / Rangel
    Alli / De Bruyne / Willian / Mkhitaryan / Loftus-Cheek
    Kane / Fiminho / Mitrovic

Gone light up to afford the rest.

Your defence - rip it up and start again.

Trippier injured. Rangel probably won't play so price will drop. Cedric might not play. PVA who knows what he's doing.

Ake is not a goal threat?

            800 minutes and 3 goals 1 assist

that would be 12 goals and 4 assist if he played all games and kept his form

              Ake - see Dan's comment
Rangel will rot on my bench so who cares.
Bellerin will start first game, if he doesn't hit the ground running i'll swap him out

I'm going Jesus, personally. United's attack looked weak against Real and City's has been scintillating. The question is what will that 1m will do for you? Lukaku is the focal point of United's attack, he's on pens, and he still managed to score against Real despite United's midfield getting dominated. He had a sitter that he missed too. Tricky.

Arsenal have a Europa League match on the Thursday ( and so will Everton if they qualify), so the match will be moved from the Saturday to the Sunday or Monday of the same weekend - the TV companies probably haven't yet decided which.

    Elliot/Foster
    Cedric/Lindelof/Davies(assuming Trippier isnt fit)/Francis/Dunk
    Pogba/Ali/Febregas/Sane/Loftus-Cheek

Interesting that no one on the Scoutcast last night was suggesting a £4.5m striker despite no one really being very happy or convinced with their third strikers (unless going top heavy with Firmino).

For me this front 7 opens up with a £4.5m striker until there's a viable option:

    KDB Mane Willian Zaha Fraser
    Kane Lukaku

Surely this is better than a Gabbi risk and downgrading Willian > TCarroll?

    Thoughts?

No starting 4.5 though. Wasting a spot. A lot of playing 4.5 mids.

Haven't listened yet, but I don't really find any of the third forwards reliable...yet. However, if I were starting 3 at the top, I would consider Steve Mounie based on his scoring last season in Ligue 1, how he has played in the preseason, even though I don't put much into these matches. Finally, HUD has good fixture through GW5 (cry/NEW/SOU/whm/LEI). At 6.0, he's not as risky as a 7.0, so it saves you 1.0.

Starting with him for sure. So much better value than Zaha/Willian IMO. And easy to downgrade if not deliver.

      1. madcat147
        • 7 Years
        6 years, 8 months ago

I'm starting with Alonso. Gives me flexibility to downgrade later if he doesn't work out. Should be good GW1 in any event. What I don't understand is why nobody fancies Josh King. 13 of his 16 goals (putting him 7th overall) were in the 2nd half of the season, putting him just behind Kane and Lukaku. Even with the reclassification, is this still not value? He was scoring almost every game late last season...

        1. GE
          • 7 Years
          6 years, 8 months ago

Yup, he is underestimated IMO as well. If I went 3-4-3 or 4-3-3 I would have him for sure. But I think the value in defence+Zaha+Willian is even better so I stick with 4-4-2 and Jesus and Lukaku up front.

Pogba experiment will end in tears. He's never scored more than 8 goals in his life. Frustrating player to watch at times. Alli or Eriksen for 1.5m more literally doubled Pogba's score last year. Matic addition aside, what's changed b/n Ibra and Lukaku up front stylistically?

  14. 6thGoal

For GW1 I am doubling up on So'ton with Bertrand and Yoshida. Through much of the pre-season it has been Cedric, but feel he is still a question mark to secure a starting position, while I feel better with Yoshida and his 5.0 price tag to start.

While his total points don't match his underlying stats, I do plan on bringing in Tadic as early as GW2 through GW5, would feature in 3 out of 4 home games (SWA/WHM/WAT) with an away fixture to SWA. Hopefully the Saints have an in form striker, don't really care who it is, but I feel it's imperative for Tadic to have freedom to roam and hopefully capitalize on his underlying stats. Also hedging my bet on the SoS during the year weeks. Hopefully the addition of Lemina help the Saints attack.
