Sky Sports Fantasy Football – The Man of the Match Awards

In our latest pre-season article on the Sky Sports game, we turn attention to its most arbitrary of scoring methods – the Man of the The Match (MoTM) award.

While it’s often easy to overlook the significance of this accolade, it should be noted that MoTM is worth five points in the Sky Sports game – the same amount as a goal or clean sheet (for defenders).

As the award is dished out by a match reporter and can sometimes differ from the televised opinion, it is far more difficult to predict and quantify than likely goals or clean sheets.

Using the last four season’s data, however, we can look to highlight certain players and positions and their potential chances of securing future awards.

Top Overall Recipients

Let’s take a look at the players who gained five or more MoTM awards last season.

NameStartsMoTMStarts-MoTM %
Eden Hazard36925%
Philippe Coutinho28932%
Alexis Sanchez36925%
Wilfried Zaha34721%
Harry Kane29724%
Kevin De Bruyne33515%
Raheem Sterling29517%
Ross Barkley32516%
Marc Albrighton29517%
Diego Costa35514%
Sergio Aguero25520%
Zlatan Ibrahimovic27519%

Here are a few points to note:

Seven midfielders and five forwards make up the top players here, with not a defender or goalkeeper in sight.

Eden Hazard has now topped the MoTM charts in three out of the last four seasons.

Philippe Coutinho has the highest starts to MoTM ratio and so possibly would have topped the total MoTM awards last year if not for injury.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the list is generally made up of expensive players from the top sides.

Flair appears to be a theme. Aside maybe from Marc Albrighton, the remaining players are known for their showmanship.

Position % of total MoTM awards by season

13/1414/1515/1616/17Total
Goalkeeper6%8%6%6%6.4%
Defender15%13%13%18%14.7%
Midfielder52%52%58%52%53.8%
Forward27%27%23%24%25.1%

Over the last four seasons the consistency here is almost frightening – midfielders dominate while forwards also claim a healthy piece of the pie.

Considering that most teams only field one forward, it does make their tally all the more appealing, however.

Defenders made a slight jump in 16/17, possibly due to the success of wingbacks. If this trend continues expect a slight increase in this area once again.

This Season’s Benefactors

So let’s try to predict a few of the players likely to gain from awards for this season.

The table below lists my view on the key MoTM candidates by team.

    Posted this to wrong thread.

Just watched Tammy Abraham's goals. He's positioning him self pretty well, so he'll find him self in lots of goal scoring opportunities. It's something you can't teach. For 5.5M could be a bargain. Don't know if Llorente takes his place when he's back or will they play together.

Im going with him. I think they'll play two up top when Llorente returns. I dont think you agree to loan at the level he is to sit on the bench. Great talent.

Played two up top for a lot of the final matches last season. Ayew + Llorente.

Probably going to be Llorente + Tammy/Ayew when all 3 available.

Bellerin or Kolasinac? Kos is all the rage right now but the Frenchman actually had more passes into the box and chances created in pre-season. I also think he is more nailed. Any other 6.0 defender worth considering?

If you can another 0.5 its not a bad idea to go to Bertrand. He's a decent player, nailed and there are a lot of other desirable defenders at 5.5 who you can switch to if it doesn't work out.

My squad selection comes down to which of A and B to include in squad below. Thoughts appreciated as keep flipping between them!
A means more safety and is probably more template and has double Southampton in defence but that should be OK with fixtures
B means more risk with Atsu and Danilo (until Trippier fit otherwise will become BDavies when Mendy back) but could both be nice differentials to start season
Main choice really as it has been all along for me of KDB and Firmino v Mane and Jesus.

A Forster Suttner KDB Zaha Firmino
B Foster Danilo Mane Atsu Jesus

To fit into rest of squad of

    ______ Elliot
    Kolasinac Ake Stephens ______ Mason
    ______ ______ Willian Iwobi Carroll
    Kane Lukaku ______
