The Technical Area – Liverpool’s Attacking Trio

Few could have predicted the distribution of points from Liverpool’s midfield with any confidence heading into Gameweek 1.

Some of us – unnerved by Philippe Coutinho’s absence through injury and rumours of his possible departure – even abstained altogether, writing off the investment as too much of a risk.

Yet those who gambled were rewarded with points. Goals from all three primary options in the Liverpool attack – Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, and Roberto Firmino – during Saturday’s 3-3 draw with Watford confirmed the potency of the trio.

In this week’s Technical Area, we will be looking into the performance of each of these three players, analysing their goalscoring threat, positioning and chance creation potential. Though much can – and will – change as more data becomes available, here’s our breakdown of who impressed us most in the season’s opening Gameweek.

Actually Arnautovic has pretty decent fixtures there... is that a bit punty? More advanced than Rambo, more nailed than Willian, better at football than Tadic or Redmond?

Wait for Lanzini to come back and Chicha to settle down.

Arnie might not be the best West Ham option.

      Not 100%.
If Kola replaces Ox at LWB, Ox replaces Bellerin at RWB (likely). If Bellerin retains his RWB spot, Ox challenges Ramsey for double pivot. Regardless, he is challenged by Coquelin already.

Depending on the game I'd say Ramsey is normally first choice ahead of Coquelin, only if Wenger decides he needs to be super defensive will he go Coquelin.

Wenger hasn't played Ox in central positions all pre-season, despite Ox demanding it as part of his contract negotiations. I don't think he's going to start now, assuming Ox stays.

Gabbi is playing that horrible West Ham defence who shipped 4 goals and looked poor. You'd need Mounie to score to break even.
I contemplated the same but feel it might be best to not chase last weeks points.

Long term though. I've only seen Mounie play one game but he looked great. I've unfortunately watched Gabbi a few times and he looks at best average at worst completely absent. This said, I have him and am not shipping for a hit just yet. Think I'll wait and get in Firm once midfield downgraded. Or straight Zaha swap for Willian.

Looks good. Just done Benteke > Mounie myself (wasn't ultra confident in Benteke this weekend anyway, but Zaha injury hurts his supply line significantly I feel). Could backfire, but with 2 home games coming up and the chance of a significant price rise if he scores this weekend I feel it's worth the risk - always fear missing out on the early season cheapo bandwagons after taking an age to catch up with the Ighalo points a few seasons ago.

100% go for Ramsey mate. He should be fit and will be a huge player for us this season. Unlikely to get rotated. He's looked so dangerous in this new formation and makes the marauding runs like he used to

I would say I'm 90% sure he'll start. The only reason he didn't on friday was that Wenger rushed him back last season when he wasn't ready and it caused him to have an injury lay off. You can see by what he contributed in the half hour he played that he's on the way back to his best. The 3 at the back gives him licence to roam and it's where he's suited to best. I reckon if he doesn't get too many injuries this season he be a template mainstay. Although I am a tad bias!

Both probably equal chance of scoring this weekend, but Mounie better medium-term fixtures and more chance of turning you a nice profit.

Is it better to keep mounie and have a Liverpool mid or have Firmimo striker and get a 6.5 mid. My other strikers are currently Aguero Lukaku

Get Mounie they have two home games and promoted teams do maintain a good home form

So looks like I'm taking a hit to drop Wilf and Fabregas. Thinking of bringing in Mkhi or Pogba, so who are we rating as the best 6.0m or less midfielder?

    A) Mooy (NEW)
    B) The Ox (stk)
    C) Xhaka (stk)
    D) Brunt (bur)
    E) JWP (WHM)
