The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 2 – Saturday

So far, it all seems pretty simple.

Manchester United are walking through teams and all we have to do as Fantasy managers is back them and count the points.

Romelu Lukaku – while wholly unconvincing throughout against Swansea City – again managed to earn his 53.5% of FPL managers points, with 67% of those owners backing him with the captaincy.

For all the naysaying that took place during today’s display, the fact remains that the Belgian is now three goals ahead of both Harry Kane and Gabriel Jesus – perhaps his most likely rivals for a spot in our forward lines.

Should they dare to blank in Sunday and Monday’s matches then further sales of both will follow, with Lukaku hoovering up yet more owners.

But the day truly belonged to Paul Pogba.

A 15-point haul in South Wales saw him reach new heights to follow his eight points gained in the opening weekend victory over West Ham.

A lot has been said and written on the presence of Nemanja Matic and how this has unleashed Pogba’s attacking talents. However, when we look closer, there is perhaps another individual key to Pogba’s recent boom.

In truth, Jose Mourinho’s side seemed to huff and puff through most of today’s victory, and Pogba cut a frustrated figure at times – indeed, he walked a disciplinary tightrope in the first half.

But late on, the introduction of both Marouane Fellaini and Anthony Martial seemed to galvanise matters. On their arrival, United simply eased through the gears and tore the Swans asunder, with Pogba the main benefactor.

United have now scored eight goals over two matches, with six of those strikes arriving after the 75-minute mark with Fellaini on the pitch.

When he arrives, Pogba appears unshackled to run at tired legs and spread devastation. Notably, his only points earned without Fellaini on the pitch so far has been his assist for Bailly’s opener today.

So while it’s difficult to question the thousands of FPL managers that are now flocking to Pogba, we still need to consider that, to this point, the influence of Matic has perhaps not been as significant as billed.

It’s only when Mourinho reinforces his midfield further that Pogba has proved unstoppable.

Meanwhile, Mkhitaryan quietly gained another two assists without taking control of the game or matching Pogba’s impact.

He is undoubtedly the creator to Pogba’s destroyer. The question is, are we forced to choose between them and if so, is it as straightforward as opting for the Frenchman?

Having just taken a points hit to acquire Mkhitaryan, he’s going nowhere. And with Phil Jones available for just 5.0 in a defence that’s already kept two shut-outs, this Fantasy manager can’t currently find a place for Pogba.

That’s a worry. Potentially, Pogba is transformed and, match after match, he could prove untameable for opposing defences.

But the Fellaini factor is interesting and we perhaps still need to show some caution. Leicester City in Gameweek 3 will likely provide a sterner test which may yet slow the United and Pogba juggernaut.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Last night, FFFix showed Alonso as dropping, made me make 3 transfers (-4) to get him out and change to 3 at the back with RLC to Pogba.

He didn't drop, now it a bit annoyed I made the changes.

Also, Jones and Zanka it said would rise, got them in..

Moral of the story: don't be obsessed with price changes.

With the exception of Watford at home the fixtures were always tricky ... just find it strange to get an attacking defender knowing fixtures are tricky then dumping him because ... umm ... the fixtures are tricky. Bournemouth may not beat Arsenal or Chelsea but they will certainly have a bit more space to attack than they have had against Albion and Watford ? Surely there are more pressing changes to every ones team ?unless they have two 4.0 defenders ?

Why would they get more space?

Agreed on the other reasoning, especially about it not being a priority. But then again, we didn't expect Bournemouth to look so bad. They look terrible

It's fun to go back to the comments here from this time last year. At that point, debate raged about which Everton midfield was an essential part of any right thinking managers squad: Bolasie, Mirallas, Barkley?

Wouldn't have Forster in goal...get Foster, use the 0.5m to upgrade Hunemeier.

I have Forster not Foster...regretting it. Megson/Pulis appear to have cast their magic spell on WBA's useless pre-season defence.

I remain skeptical. Burnley created plenty yesterday but couldn't find the target, in the Bournemouth game a lot of possession was given up and a more creative side would probably have equalised.

My concern for Albion is I don't see where the outlet comes from when they're under pressure and they get boxed in.

That said, you can't argue with two cleans and Pulis is doing a masterful job with keeping the club in the PL.

Did the kneejerk yesterday and transferred out KdB for Pogba. It doesn't matter even if KdB delivers against Everton, Pogba is still more value for money. I wont captain KdB and he is too expensive compared to other mids.

    Team
    Foster (Elliot)
    Cedric Yoshida Danilo (Mee Rangel)
    Salah Mkhitaryan Pogba Ritchie (Carroll)
    Lukaku Munie Kane

Trippier inn for Danilo next during int break.

Surely doesn't work like that? He's a stand in for a better more established player currently, yeah he's doing well but I'd think mcauley would have a chance of being straight back in once available

Agreed. Pulis has a first choice defence in his head. If it's available, he will play it. Question is... Is McAuley first choice? I'd imagine he is - they started Barry and he's 100

Thoughts on Ramsey? Looked lively, 4 shots on goal, some excellent chances...unfortunely missed those. Definately worth keeping with those longer term fixtures, and instead Willian out when Hazard fit ? Thanks.

What happens when Sanchez is back? I can't see Ramsey starting each week. Too much competition

ramsey playing in creative mid role - his competition is elneny and cazorla but cazorla injured and elneny isnt great going forward

Honestly think the idea Ramsey isn't nailed is a bit ridiculous. He has started every game when fit in this formation

DM with Xhaka...played all the time at the end of the last season when Sanchez played as well. Wellbeck to the bench.

Arsenal created a lot of good chances...they could have scored four goals. Unlucky in this game.

    Off topic Q.

Going to Wembley today with the old man, where's good to go for some beers for a few hours before the game. Was thinking of going to Kilburn as it's a stop on the Metropolitan line and I'm meeting him at St. Pancras. Any ideas?

At the moment he's first choice, so until his form dips and they start conceding or he gets injured

Looks like I'm the only one with triple United bar Lukaku. Jones, Mkhitariyan and Pogba have served me well so far. I just feel the Mkhitariyan and Pogba combo at 16m offer much more value than a 11.5m Lukaku. It frees up funds elsewhere, gives me the license to play another heavy hitter (Kane or Jesus) along with a Vardy/Firmino/Morata upfront. More importantly, I think start of the season is the right time to go maverick if you really want to. It has worked for me in the first couple of weeeks but if it doesn't work I'm ready to get back to the drawing board.
