Injuries

The Treatment Table – Gameweek 2

Next up, we check in on the latest injury news to find Mauricio Pochettino playing down Kieran Trippier’s late departure in the defeat to Chelsea. Meanwhile, Xherdan Shaqiri is an early concern for Stoke City’s derby clash with West Brom, while Alexis Sanchez continues to be monitored ahead of Arsenal’s Gameweek 3 trip to Anfield.

New Arrivals

Kieran Trippier was replaced after picking up a knock late on during Spurs’ loss to Chelsea. The right-back was starting for the first time this term after recovering from an ankle injury sustained during pre-season, though post-match, Mauricio Pochettino insisted that the problem is “not a big issue”.

If fit, Trippier’s fitness is certainly one to monitor ahead of a plum home clash against former club Burnley – the right-back is priced at 5.4 compared with the in-demand Ben Davies’ 5.6.

Leicester City skipper Wes Morgan will miss tonight’s cup encounter with Sheffield United with the “slight back problem” that forced him off during the 2-0 win over Brighton. Manager Craig Shakespeare has stated that Morgan’s setback is different to the injury that kept the defender sidelined for the final months of the 2016/17 campaign.

Seagulls’ striker Glenn Murray was forced off midway through the defeat at Leicester after sustaining two knocks to his ankle. Steve Sidwell missed out altogether with a minor back complaint.

Meanwhile, Stoke will assess Erik Pieters (ankle) and Xherdan Shaqiri (leg muscle), who were both forced off in the 1-0 home win over Arsenal.

The Swiss international is set to miss tomorrow’s cup clash with Rochdale but the club “remain hopeful” he will be fit for the weekend trip to West Brom, despite his history with similar problems. Mark Hughes handed new boy Eric Choupo-Moting the lone striker role, but he could move into a central support slot alongside Jese Rodriguez at the Hawthorns, with Saido Berahino leading the line against his former club should Shaqiri miss out.

West Ham’s Winston Reid suffered a calf complaint during the warm-up ahead of the weekend loss to Southampton, with Jose Fonte handed a first start in his absence. The Hammers have shipped seven goals in two matches in light of the 3-2 defeat but now travel to a Newcastle United side that’s failed to find the net in back-to-back fixtures.

Newcastle’s Dwight Gayle (illness) is an early doubt for a cup encounter with Nottingham Forest tomorrow evening. Recent signing Joselu looks in line to start, then, having impressed off the bench in Sunday’s 1-0 loss to Huddersfield Town.

Southampton’s summer signing Mario Lemina was replaced on 64 minutes of his debut after sustaining a shin injury at home to West Ham. His withdrawal allowed substitute James Ward-Prowse – who dropped to the bench at St Mary’s – to take up a central support berth, with Steven Davis moving into the double-pivot.

West Brom’s Claudio Yacob missed the weekend win at Burnley after sustaining a hamstring injury during training on Friday. The Argentine’s absence allowed Gareth Barry his first start for the Baggies.

Crystal Palace were without Jairo Riedewald for their trip to Anfield on Saturday. Eagles manager Frank de Boer has revealed that his compatriot “had growing pains” and was not risked against Liverpool. Riedewald will be expected to return to contention for the visit of Swansea City in Gameweek 3, with James Tomkins the man most likely to drop out.

In Recovery

After seeing his side lose at Stoke, Arsene Wenger rolled out a handy update on the fitness of Alexis Sanchez as Arsenal prepare to visit Anfield this Sunday:

“We’ll see how he goes through the week. He has not played for a long time. He was out with a muscular strain and hopefully, he will survive the tests first before he comes back. He’s not played now for six weeks and it’s difficult to be at your best in the first game straight away.”

Sitting in just 2% of FPL squads, a return to action for Sanchez would be significant news for Fantasy managers after he finished last term as the top scoring player in the game. The Gunners’ schedule from Gameweek 4 onwards is also very encouraging, with home clashes against Bournemouth, West Brom and Brighton in the subsequent four rounds of fixtures. Initially costing 12.0 in FPL, the Chilean’s lack of pitch time has seen his price slip to 11.9.

Although he wasn’t passed fit for Sunday’s win at Spurs, Chelsea’s Eden Hazard stepped up his recovery from an ankle complaint in a behind-closed-doors practice match with QPR last Thursday. While he remains a big doubt for the visit of Everton, the potential return of Hazard, allied with Sanchez’ imminent comeback, could set to trigger major sales across the Fantasy games over the international break.

West Ham trio Manuel Lanzini, Andy Carroll and Cheick Kouyate could all be in contention for the weekend trip to Newcastle. Last week, Slaven Bilic revealed that Lanzini is expected back in full training today, with the Argentine potentially in line to make an immediate return to the first XI as a result of Marko Arnautovic’s dismissal at St Mary’s. He could take up a spot alongside Michail Antonio and Andre Ayew in the attacking midfield places behind Javier Hernandez.

Swansea City frontman Fernando Llorente will be monitored this week as he steps up his recovery from an arm injury. In his pre-Gameweek 2 press conference, manager Paul Clement went on to say ”we will see if he is okay” to face Crystal Palace this weekend.

Bournemouth’s Simon Francis remains sidelined with the hamstring injury that forced off late in Gameweek 1. Cherries’ manager Eddie Howe confirmed yesterday that Francis won’t be back until after the international break, and his absence should allow Adam Smith to retain the right-back role for Saturday’s clash with Man City.

Everton earned a point at Manchester City on Monday without the services of Sandro Ramirez in attack due to a heel injury. Manager Ronald Koeman has since confirmed that he is hopeful that the player will be fit for Thursday’s Europa League clash against Hajduk Split. His potential return in Gameweek 3 would give the Everton boss a selection headache given the impressive display from Dominic Calvert-Lewin against City.

Finally, Manchester United duo Luke Shaw and Ashley Young stepped up their recoveries from injury with 60-minute run outs for the reserves at home to Swansea last night. Marcos Rojo has also returned to training for the Red Devils following his knee ligament injury back in April.

What other strikers do you have that could possibly justify taking Lukaku out....

He's got form, United are flowing and they have great fixtures. Pretty crazy...

Aguero. United will face good defensive teams so think Kane will score more than Lukaku.

Sure you want to take out KDB? I was considering it, but he scored a goal and two assists against Bournemouth last year and City's last results against Bournemouth i think were something like 4-0, 4-0, 2-1 and 5-1. So I'm gonna hold one more week at least.

Only way I can see it happen is if you're prepared to take a hit lose Kane.

Kane (12.5) to Hernandez (7.1) releases 5.4 mill
3.1 goes to upgrade Matic (5) to Pogba (8.1)
      Salah (9.1) to Alli (9.5)

Keep the change and use it to upgrade Tarroll and Hune next week.

Never too early if your team needs it, but if you can take a -4 or -8 instead, then do that and give yourself at least another couple weeks to assess players and transfer window closing.

I wildcarded. Got plenty of experience and had at top 500 finish last year so I far from feel I knee jerked.

I simply messed up and am wildcarding to restore some balance to my side. If I doubled my points of 77 I still wouldn't be top of my cash league!

This is logical, a lot on here could easily have started with Jesus, Kane & Salah, if you then throw in having a punt on Benteke and then maybe even Kyle Walker and Fabregas, and Mr Zaha, your team is looking thin already. Daniels another pick that hasn't done well...

There'll be plenty on here that went with a combo of unlucky players as above.Others went for the likes of Pogba which was deemed as risky.

I wouldn't take out Salah and Kane now though... They are still good picks. If you have Walker, Fabregas and Zaha still, sure you could argue for WC if the rest isn't producing either.

But there are so many things that are still unclear that I would hold for a few more weeks. The City big guns could well run riot this weekend and the whole landscape will have changed again

There's is just no point in holding on to a team when it's underperforming and you are pretty sure it ain getting better...and even harder to then lose 8 more points to half fix it. I will also say that later on the season if you need a refurb a lot easier to do with a decent rank.

          My defence and midfield.

          Stephens, PVA, Ake, Alexander-Arnold, 4.0.

I contemplated investing in more solid teams over Ake and PVA but went goal threat. United Jones and Spurs Bavies in hindsight much better picks.

I went KDB, Mane and Zaha in a midfield 3 with Matic and Carroll to occasionally replace a defender to shift to a 343.

Up top captained Kane twice. Firmino. And downgraded Lukaku to Jesus when last night simply proved he insecure Jesus can be

Still think Stephens and PVA are good picks. When you get a defender for goal threat you need to be more patient.

KDB and Mane are also good picks. Matic and Zaha I would say need a replacement.

Kane and Firmino are also great picks. Lukaku to Jesus was very unfortunate and I think Jesus also is a bit of a risk right now.

Could easily downgrade Jesus and upgrade Matic/Zaha

Yeah, I have a lot of those players. Not sure Jones is a safe pick longer term though?

                  Foster, Elliott
Alonso, Trippier, Jones, Huddersfield or other 4.5, 4.0
                  Eriksen, Pogba, Mooy, Mane, RLC
                  Lukaku, Kane (Quaner)

                  Swapping between 352 and 442

Not a bad idea. Bernardo Silva and Sterling looked good when they came on and Pep could change formation. That would leave Jesus pretty vulnerable. Was not too impressed with him in the first two games. Aguero looked a lot more threatening albeit a bit "off".

    Thoughts on Maguire?

Maguire seems to be at his domineering best. How does he compare to Jones and Dawson in that price bracket?

Oops. I do plan on owning him for parts of the season. I'd argue the other two, if jones can stay nailed, are more season keepers

Will Jesus price drop tonight? And, even if he does, do I transfer him out or stick with him?

Saw he was subbed at half time yesterday, was that purely tactical or a view to just playing Aguero next weekend?

Finally, if you think I should get rid (I already have Lukaku and Kane), who should I replace him with?

I only have 1 FT so would use this to free funds for a +9M mildfielder after the international break

I'm a fan of lacazette honestly. But all other options point at going cheaper, especially if you have Kaku and Kane.

He was subbed because of walker. I have jesus and thought he was playing well but wasn't convinced by him and sergio in terms of fpl points

I didn't think he looked good and City looked better with 10 men after the red card and formation change. I think Jesus is a risky 10.5 investment at the moment.

All fair but he is talking about selling not buying, I'm considering shipping also but I think the sub and situation isn't a factor going forward, just that he didn't look particularly threatening goals wise, thought his link up play was top drawer myself

he and Bailly are serving Europe suspensions, so he'll play PL games the next few weeks at least is my guess. he has a history of being brittle also, if that concerns you.

Dawson, on the other hand, is very reliable, rarely hurt, a real goal threat on set pieces, and as nailed as they come. but you don't get the ManU defense with him.

i wouldn't double on Southampton defense.

Need an early Kane goal v Burnley to settle the nerves. There will be a bit of anger if he hasn't scored by HT and absolute scenes on here if Kane blanks

Going into the international break it's vital to have a good gw and the captain has to perform otherwise it's a long long 2 weeks

Why is it any different going into an international break?

Particularly the captain choice, if I captain Mark Noble why's it different from captaining Lukaku? Is it my own personal morale?

If he fails, it's just the way it is. I only get frustrated when I take a punt and the captaincy fails, when another obvious choice does well. Kane is the obvious choice this week.
